Of course it is. But the history of the common wealth state throws many people off just as much as the music. Check below for the argument why it is:

VA got so many sounds and influences that even southerners are forced to stretch what they expect from them. And that's great. The music scene in Virginia is as diverse as our country itself. Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Skills, D'Angelo, Chris Brown, Trey Songs, Clipse, Fam Lay, Neptunes. I know I'm leaving out folk so just comment at the bottom.

Virginia has been putting out some monster music for a while now. What is it about Virginia that makes the music so wide open? They stay on point when it comes to the lyrical side of things. And the producers have such a range that if you try and pinpoint their style you will make a fool out of yourself. I'm bringing this up because we take notice of Louisiana, Texas, Florida and everyone else when they have their runs in the music industry, but VA don't stop. They never sleep when it comes to music. Is it that they have so much class with their swag (I promise myself I would never use that word damn) music that they just don't boast. Just curious.

And I know there are tons of artist in Virginia feeling like damn we ain't been heard yet but that's just the nature of the biz.  They are some serious sounds coming from VA and I just wanted to crack the lane open on the Dirty Blog because I'll be bringing them your way soon. For example, what you know about RUM.  Until then, Skillz has a new crack item for your ear.

"So Far So Good"

Hats off to Trick Daddy. If you haven't checked out his interview wit Thomas A Harden of SOHH click here  Trick shows you in this interview why he is a legend. First class n*gga is all I can say. Way to hold your people down. Let's ride out on this one.

Yeah, VA is the South. Cap City, VA is as Southern as it get...We bump everything from Three Six to Common, Jay-Z to T.I...it all depends on the mood. Everybody got different listening styles here, just like the music we put out. The Cap City, Richmond VA, the Dirty Burg - is mostly Down South Niccas - The Bad News, VA Beach, P-town - the 7 cities Is like a mixture of the South and the North, and that 703 (NOVA) niccas be mostly on that up north ish from what I can see...

SouthSide Richmond VA all day 'Bottom of the North - Top of the South'

Nigga you's a certified bitch 1st & foremost for backing that fat lying P.O.S. Fake ass rick ross. I don't put caps on his name because that would be disrespecting the real Rick Ross who really done knew the Real Noreaga. 2nd your blog can suck a big dick everybody know the Midwest is where it's at. Rick Ross is the undercover snitch for the Hip Hop police in Miami.

Fix is a bitch and igunn is a Tranny lovin homo as well

Damn right!!!! Va been holding it down for so long. I spent half my time in "Naughty by Norfolk" and the other half in Fl. So I knw "The Tidewater" area very well. I would like to say this though. Southern Va, is slightly different from Northern Va. Northern Va tends to lean more towards the east coast rap, and the Southern Va leans more towards southern rap. "I WISH SOMEBODY WOULD TELL ME I'M WRONG"!! Now, back when i was attending NSU (Norfolk State Univ) back in 97-01, No Limit was on top, Bad Boy was still doing its thing, 3-6 was getting a lot of burn, Cash $ was the shit, of course Hov was poppin, but the whole Va movement was great. And i happended to witness it at it's height when everybody was coming out ie (Missy,Timbo,Clipse, Neptunes,Famlay, Nicole Ray, Tweet, Teddy Riley, even wack ass Magoo)! Yeah, dawg, Va got a mix of everything that you will like to be served with. I have never in my life had more fun at clubs or parties like I had going to NSU and checking out the club scene in the Tidewater area. "NAUGTHY BY NORFOLK" "HAMPTON HUSTLERS" "BAD NEWS" "P-TOWN" CHESACHEEZ" STAND UP!!!

BADNEWZ VA. STAND UP!!!!!!!! Ah yo I am a 90's hip-hop cat so we are influenced by NY Mc's. HOV,NAS,WU,BOOTCAMP,MOBB DEEP ect...The young boys nowadays listen to that B.S radio type ish. On the real VA (real hip-hop) cats dont considered Missy hip-hop she is a R&B shorty anywho... Skillz seems to be the only REAL HIP-HOP cat that's respected. I cant leave out C.M.D. Holly Molly aka Jose the Tattoo Kid, Marc Menace, Contra Fam, Choc Ty........Technically we are the south, but from a music stand point we got out own s**** poppin'. We influenced by a lot and influenced a lot... Every whack producer tried to sound like Timberland or Pharrell. Everybody wanted to be like A.I (allen iverson badnewz) or Michael Vick (badnewz) Shall I go on??? LOL!!! That nigga Quan that did that track with Nas (just a moment) Is a fraud as nigga basically on some Rick Ross, but he lied about his reason for being locked. I dont feel we slept on at all. The names I mentioned will forever be mentioned ........Big Ups all my 7 city Reps!!!!!!!!!

man fuck that midwest nigga he can suck a donkeys dick va is where its at bottom line is we are a melting pot we get the eastcoast shit before the south we get the south shit before the eastcoast all that shit come up and down 95. think about it richmond and va has been in all generes of rap 3-6 talked about havin work here. so has jeezy fuckin jay-z ( i used to dribble down in va) even the late great big ( cases in virginia bodies in d.c) anyone that dont wanna give us the respect we deserve can kick rocks then go kill yourself. everywhere i go niggaz give ups to where im from who the fuck cares about a indiana man that nigga is a clown lol miami beach or indiana beach bitch kill urself.... in final thoughts GOD loves you and i love you to peace.....

I dont know man, if you go by a map, then they barely considered the south, cus even the Clipse said they not really da dirty south(on My Block VA). Its like, I'm only one state south of dem(NC) so I aint no stranger to da Va alotta people got southern accents in NC and across da south, but AI dont, Timbo dont, Clipse dont, Pharrell dont, they music dont even sound like southern music really, compared to all the other southern states, I dont know man, Pusha T said they more like da "Middle East"(My Block VA), so maybe they is. But they can claim what they want.

That cat from Indiana has lost his damn mind! Can anyone even name a rapper from Indiana...? No one! Exactly! Big up to VA north and south!

The next person that says VA is the south should be shot in tha face. I am truly from VA. ( not tryin to say those other cats arent, they just wanna be a part of the dirty south shit ) I was born in Richmond. Grew up in Northern VA and went to college and currently live in Norfolk. We are the fuckin DMV DMV DMV Say it with me D-M-fuckin V. DC Maryland and VA. Baltimore to the beach baby. We all may have slighlty differnt ways of talk and a lil bit diff style but anyone who knows this demographic of people knows we all have too many similarities to deny. Be proud niggas and dont piggyback on the south ! We are only the south geographically.

It's about time ya'll nucca's recognized the 7 cities. Please don't forget Bink Dog, all he does is produces hit after hit. Many classics for Jigga, and what he did for Freeway this last album, whew. (By the way, it's a shame Freeway album did not get the love it deserved). Anyway, VA has been constantly holding it down for years. The main reason we don't have one sound is because we have alot imports into that area. Families get shipped into that area because of the military and decide to stay. So it's sort of a melting pot. Huge college town too. Bottom line we appreciate good music, and we stand on our own if we have too. Shot out to all VA's 1st round draft picks. VA stand up, all my peeps in Chesapeake holla!!!

HELL YEAH!!! VA is tha south!! Why wouldn't it be..... VA is one of the confederate states that was in the mix during slavery days.... VA was one of the ports for most African slaves to be imported into America.. Along with North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida... Hell Yeah!!! Even though some niggaz from VA act like they from NY... is because NY is close to them.. and alot of cats that be in visiting VA be from the eastcoast.... Big up to North VA and South VA!! HOLLA!!!
The real dirty southern states...
1.Virginia
2.North Carolina
3.South Carolina
4.Florida
5.Georgia
6.Tennessee
7.Louisiana
8.Mississippi
9.Alabama
10.Arkansas
12. and some parts of TEXAS were I am from... not including West Texas because that is Mexico.....

Culturally we have some of those southern traditions, but as far as music and mentality goes, I wouldn't really say it's the south. You find out what the south is the second you cross the border into NC. It's much different here than most people would think after reading their history books. Here in the 757, there's always been a mix of everything, but I'd say there's more of a northern influence than anything else. As Badnewzbully mentioned, most of us grew up listening almost exclusively to NY MCs.

Thats pretty much what i was waiting on.

G- UNOT KILLA I'ma tell you now I'll never take what you type personal because I know you get paid to type it. And most of the time you got some good input, other times you get bored and just type whatever. But either way a Blog just aint a blog without g- Unot Killa's 2 cents. (by the way send your email to me i want to interview you on some upcoming sh*t, you have made quite a name for yourself)

JGunn. As far as the Rick Ross thing I did'nt know about the other guy 305 and all this til after I made the post. And even now I commend Trick for doing what he's doing. I think I know whats going on and I'll just keep it to myself. At the end of the day that Rick Ross situation is so sticky only those involved truely have a solid opinion. We the outsiders are really like fans in the stands talking bout what we would and wouldn't do. But if you know this world then you know there's a bunch of sh*t going on and Ross's music far exceeds the story of whether or not he was a CO. If you only knew the sh*t that goes on in hip hop then you would be so dissapointed in a lot of cats. Its is what it is. I can't even begin to give you examples but lets just say don't ever get to caught up in the characters that all of these Entertainers portray.

Me included. Sh*t have you seen my typos. I'm not proud of them but it is what it is. I got a real life with alot of things to do, so sometimes i foul up a word or two. And I accept that part of my blogs. I'll try to not do that but once again, it is what it is. And JGunn give me some artist out there that you're boasting about email me @ sohhdirtyinfo@gmail.com

As far as Va being southern, geographically it is. And I think if you really look at VA people they live southern lifestyles with the exception of a few. As far as the East coast influence, WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT THERE IS A MAJOR EAST COAST INFLUENCE IN VA.

lexlo what up, yes I'm aware of the DMV. No one has noticed it yet but as a blogger. Rather than encourage the rapper vs rapper bullshit, I encourage dialogue. So sometimes I will write shit just to get the response first because I know that SOHH have some great Comment posters and usually they post with passion and the truth comes flying out so thanks for your post. I'm doing the same thing with the gang post. I just want people to communicate so I'm starting slow and just getting shit cooked up so that we can all get on the same page. We don't have to agree but we got to communicate.

FLX Dirty Blog poster

VA is the south. The south is a movement right now, and I think alot of people fail to recognize that. If you wannna go by the map.."ANYTHING SOUTH OF THE MASON DIXION LINE IS CONSIDERED THE SOUTH"....so yea Virignia is located in the south. DMV bullshit is whack....know what you talking about first then speak on it.

Bottom line is it's just a unique state. VA stands on it's own. Musically, it's always been leaning to it's northern influences, especially since that's where the majority of the hot music was coming from. Recently, the south has had it's movement so it's not quite so taboo to call it the "dirty south". Even though I live up north now, I'm born and raised there and ya'll gotta admit, it's some country mofo's down there. Shot out, to all my cuzzzins and bra-in-laws!! LMAO. It's a split, it is what it is!!! But make no mistake "IT IS"!!!!!

for i was born and raised VA 2 up 2 down now southern VA dont just listen to down south music youn I live in Northern VA 703 form DA HIGHWAY alexandria alot of people listen to gogo cause we are so close to dc alot of scarface or any down south artist mainly southern we got a some northern influences also now when i was in bad news 757 i hear alot of east coast not 2 much why do u think biggie and JayZ talked alot about VA because we was nice enough to let them dudes deal and move weight around 95 VA is the gateway for alot of stuff around here no bull if from VA you know alot of stuff is movin matter fact I remember when the WU did alot of stuff in norfolk and richmond area, Ive been down mercury blvd and down richmond old town Alexandria 703, 804 and 540 DONT GET IT TWISTED VA aint nuthin to sleep on young we get hated on all time if we party in DC and MD but all day I rep VA i dont care if they mug me or not screw them bamaz VA ALL DAY

Yes and No. I'm from Georgia and I've spent quite amount of time in other states below the dixie line. I've lived in Norfolk for the past two years. Virginia is the south but when you are talking about the Hampton Roads area which is the 7 cities then it is a whole different ball game. They listen to so much different stuff in the club that you dont get the south feel. I'm not knocking it but I grew up on southern clubbing and its not like that here. They play alot of southern music but when you add go go, b-more club, reggae, and east coast then thats where you lose the whole southern feel. In the south, we only play southern and some east coast. Point, Blank, Period. Richmond is definately the south though cuz the cats up their be on it hard. Conclusion is, Va is the south but the Hampton Roads area is more diverse mainly because of all the out of state military so it makes it hard to pin point one genre of music to play at the clubs.

VA is BOTH the NORTH AND THE SOUTH... we right slam in the middle. We the "Bottom of the North, and the Top of the South!!! I personally think we lean more towards up North culture... DC/NY influenced as far as Style, and slang.

I was born and raised in Richmond, Va and to me Va is the south. I think we start the south if you want me to be honest. No we not dirty dirty like Georgia and Florida, but if you travel to different areas you will see its southern. And it all depends on what part of VA you live in. Clipse, Timbo, and Missy are from the 7 cities. D'Angelo was the only person from Richmond.... and how hood could he be as a r&b singer. But this topic has been debated for years... even in the state of Va. We are the south and we have southern hospitality. We are not rude like northerns ( no offense ). I am gonna tell you like this.. I am sick and tired of people sleeping on VA. We have a lot to offer. VA will get their time to shine. But the celebrities that are from here don't shout us out for real. You know an ATL rapper when you see one but it's like you come from VA you put your head down in shame. My Block VA was a piece of shit. It did not capture the true Virginia. I was highly disappointed. I am patiently waiting for that true break out star from Cap City to put us on the map. And I'm so proud of Skillz on his new video. Trey Songz and Chris Brown. They are the only 3 that made it who isn't ashamed to rep Va. I'm a celebrity blogger- check out my page
www.hollywoodlife-dee.blogspot.com

And that ignorant bitch ( excuse the language ) from Indiana... I would love for you to come to Richmond ( Southside, Highland Park, Church hill, etc. ) and talk your shit. You will never make it back home.

def shout out to the whole va 757 703 n 804 of course... yunno..shout out to trey tim chris miss FAM GRIP H neptunes esp clipse man just look in the mags n videos there is def a impeccable swag out of those artists... VA will be around for a while 2 up 2 down
757 city boy

Dee Mone't, you dam right, that nicca from indiana would neva make it back talkin wreckless like that around, Southside, HP, Church Hill, sh*t the dirty Burg, Dopewell, he would be rollin in the rivah! lol...

oh yeah, and shout out to Skillz, i dont really listen to the nicca like that but he is tryin to do somethin for the 804.

Maan, who the fuck is this J-gunn nigga? Deres only one J-Gunz nigga, step the off with that shit nigga....

And fuck any nigga that got a problem with Indiana....from the murder capital G.I, to Naptown

Like no disrespect to the cat's from VA but being from GA and now living in VA for the last for years....... Majority of you all don't consider no acknowledge yourself as being from the SOUTH at all. Actually is Mason-Dixon Line, boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland so maryland is even a southern state as well which includes DC. I mean trust me when i first got up here I was the country cat from Georgia and hell no I don't wear butta's or timbs or tall white tees but and I don't what's say what's up son I say what's happening pimp or shawty. I mean real talk it's people from North Carolina and parts of South Carolina that act the same way so i don't know if at one time NY/eastcaost was so cool that people tried to grab they swagg but it shows even to this day. The Dirty has had this hiphop/style shit since 1996 and that is why this is even a discussion. Real talk the Dirty South is as follow's

1.Georgia(which is the originator)
2.Florida
3.Alabama
4.Mississippi
5.Louisiana
6.South Carolina half and half
7.Texas

I forgot Arkansas and Tennessee mosdef the south..

man what history class did this nigga take that said the mason dixon line was at the bottom of penn and top of maryland dumb nigga dc is dc for a reason and thats because that was the middle of all that shit. big up southside the 804 WE ARE THE SOUTH BITCHES

I'm from Southside Richmond (which some of you niccas fakin on here cuz yall really from Chesterfeild Co.) and we definately south as hell. In the same there are so many nickaz in the city that their is a mixture. You can hear dudes listenin to some 3-6 or you can hear somebody listenin to some up north shish. Everybody on here talkin about the 7 cities and all this NOVA shish yall soft and yall know Richmond is the king of VA. Get it right!!!

man what history class did this nigga take that said the mason dixon line was at the bottom of penn and top of maryland dumb nigga dc is dc for a reason and thats because that was the middle of all that shit. big up southside the 804 WE ARE THE SOUTH BITCHES

" I am actually a history major SMH! when you try to educate NICCA this is the kick back you get READ ur books 804 and get back at me !!!!!!

I'm from Norhtern VA, and we have never considered ourselves southern. While geographically VA is part tha Dirty South, but here in NOVA the Eastcoast Northern style and attitude is how we get down. We are the DMV and rappers from VA don't even sound southern. Respect tha DMV, Clipse(Best Out), Timbaland, Skillz, Neptunes, Missy.

VA has always had dope music. Its been a consistent state as far as putting out worthwhile material. Geographically, it is considered "the south" but like the article explains, there is a wide variety of music, styles and artists. As far as artists that you don't know about from the state, check up on these unknowns...

K-Beta (emcee)- www.myspace.com/alienbrain

Bucky Dolla (emcee)- www.myspace.com/buckydollar

Nfinit3 (producer/emcee)- www.myspace.com/nfinit3

Range da Messenga (emcee/singer)- www.myspace.com/rangedamessenga

VA is the south, no question. We don't have the thick southern accent like GA, AL,and other deep south states. A lot of our music influence does come from areas like DC,MD,NY.(Did somebody say NC? I hope not)
Regardless of what area of VA you're from- its good to see folks on here reppin the state.(804,757, etc)
" VA All Day "

Like I said in the first post on this blog...i definetely broke that ish down on how it is in VA...Niccas in the 804 Richmond- to the Dirty Burg - "South" In the NOVA - niccas be on that East Coast ish...and in the 757 - 7 cities VA beach to Badnews and P-town - niccas be on a mixture of ish...I would say from the 804 to the 757 on down niccas is more so Southern than anything else...

any state below PA is pretty much the south to me including MD, because those dudes from BMore and DC is country as hell. So yeah, yall all south

I used to be in Va. all the time and I always got an East Coast vibe from them. They seem to dress that way, act that way and talk that way. If you listen to Pharell, Madd Skillz, The clipse(even though they are originally from the Bronx) Missy. Their whole style is East coast I guess it has to do with a lot of New Yorkers and people from up north living in Va. Before Miami everybody from NY used to be in Virginia especially in the 80's for all you guys who remember the Greek Fest in Virginia Beach in the 80's.

DMV ALL DAY!!!!!!!

Like I said before.. it depends on what of va you from honestly. When it comes to Nova and the 7 cities yeah they not the south to me. but we got our country parts and some of us do have a southern accent. for those of you who weren't born and raised in the 804... you will never know. We are the south. If you don't believe me then you can always come down here... and walk through the REAL streets of va. Not chesterfield or downtown... that real shit. I no longer care about what you others think of VA. We the south, We the shit, and WE ARE GONNA HAVE OUR TIME TO SHINE. Believe that!! Read up on your history people!! And honestly they fuck with VA cuz we start the south. If N.C. was in our spot on the map and we had S.C spot... this wouldn't be a conversation. Get what I'm saying? And who ever doesn't classify us as the south then obviously you failed history.

on da real we da south but norfolk niggaz don't claim da shit. u don't neva here them niggaz shout (VA)when da shout out da south. we in NORFOLK don't listen 2 alot of southern rappers. u no Jeezy T.I luda plies wayne dats bout it ever bout else from NEW YORK and VA. da old school west coast da it's. i think we just da east coast. shout out 2 da (VA) but NORFOLK run it (YOUNGZ PARK GRIMMY DOLLAR)

SUP ALL. I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN THE 804 (southside). I grew up listen to everything from George Clinton, Cameo (funk) and the like to Chuck Brown and everything from up top above D.C. I listen to the east when that was all it was. Then to west before and some after Rodney King. After the consciousness in hip hop was hard to come, it was the Ghetto Boys before they even change the spelling. And all of Face stuff. And in 92' Reggae. Little after that I stop buying music so to speak accept Biggie stuff and the old school hip hop that is conscious and now available on Cd's.

Now, I have study the Afrikan experience here in Amerikkka for a while. I do understand that the 804 was the Capital of the Confederacy. Not being in touch with the movement and influence's of the music as such I will always consider VA the south geographically speaking.

I have relatives in Cleveland and Detroit. I work with sis. bro. from NY, NJ, PA. and they can make you feel country as heck.

With question like " make groceries? how do you make groceries?" or have my cousin roommate in the motor city tell him when I call " ain't it man is on the phone"

Now, to get to the point, I thought that because VA is in the south then we would be consider the dirty south? I printed a statement about VA and the dirty south on our family reunion t-shirt as to say welcome to the dirty south. It seem however there must be a musical element involve? I think I may have made a mistake in doing so. Could someone be so kind and break it down for a brotha? So if I am incorrect I can give an explanation. Before being kick off the t-shirt committee!
