UGK Still Holding On & Ringtone Rappers

This week's Billboard 200 is in and it appears that UGK has got another week remaining in the top 10 at the 10 spot with 35,000 in sales. Plies is already out of the top 10, Yung Joc didnt debut in the top 10 and that's no surprise. And with this news let's discuss a new phase of the rap game, the ringtone rapper. In the past it was singles that sold, and they still do to a certain degree but with Billboard giving credit to digital sales and ringtones, we've bred a new generation of rappers.

A current look at the Hot Ringmasters chart shows a few southern names and a couple examples of ringtone rappers. You've got Soulja boy and Hurricane Chris along with names like Plies, and a few others. So you tell me, do hot ringtone rappers help or hurt the game? I know it's about getting money, but is it only about getting money? Do you have your favorite rappers ringtone, or is your favorite ringtone not even by your favorite rapper?

Speak up, post your ringtone and answer the questions along with it and let everyone know what you think! I'll go first, my ringtone is the default ringtone on a Treo 700p, I know Im boring to have a default ringtone that came with the phone. Love it or hate it I think ringtone rappers are here to stay for the moment with single sales slower and ringtones sometimes costing 3 times as much as a single.

Rapper Emergency Broadcast System Alert!

This is not a test, this is a an alert of the rapper emergency broadcast system. As of today August 28th 2007 rappers are no longer allowed to use names including the word Young or Yung, such as Yung Joc, Yung Berg, Yung One, Yung Gangsta, Young Bleed, Young Blood, Yungstar and... I think you get the point.

In addition, today is the release of Yung Joc's Hustlenomics and we're going to leave his sales at the Coffee Shop where they belong. Only kids shopping at Starbucks will be buying this album because it does not sell in the streets. Any men seen listening to Yung Joc while driving, dancing, wearing a backpack, sweater vest or in groups bigger than 1 are subect to lose their player card. Please do not contribute your money to the destruction of real hip-hop.

joc.jpg
Is this the face of the streets in 2007? Maybe only if you live in Atlanta?

This alert is over you may now return to your regularly scheduled listening of real hip-hop not at the coffee shop, because you know that's not hot.

In other news though there is a little bit of real southern hip hop hitting the streets today. I'm talking about the Rob G Reppin My Block Mixtape release. You can see all of the southern all stars on this official mixtape release, so go cop it in your local stores!

"Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream..."

I know when you read that title you were like wtf is dude on today with this dumb sh!t. Well let me tell you I'm just quoting a line from the latest Hurricane Chris single The Hand Clap which I was subjected to hearing multiple times at a club this weekend. I dont know why but it just hit me and I couldnt help but wonder are people really feeling this type of sh!t? Is this music, is this what its come to? If you haven't heard the track then you have got to go listen to it right now. Music like this is all over the place from Hurricane Chris to Soulja Boy, even the Ozone Awards slept on many of the real artists in the south that are making good music. What is it coming to? I've got a new track for you if you hear someone with a Hurricane Chris or Soulja Boy ringtone then go up and give them a headclap!

Posted Up and Randomness

It's Friday again so it's time to set the weekend off. I know alot of you are still figuring out how to post up a hot event that's going down in your local area but we're going to keep trying til it works. I'll be relaxing but I know some of DFW's K104 will be having a hot little back to school pool party in the metroplex this weekend. Could be worth checking out, even more so if it's adults getting down. Post up your event and let people know where it's going down.

A bit of on the randomness is that UGK stayed in the top 10 on Billboard 200 with a bit over 60,000 more in sales which puts them on pace for gold in 3 weeks and hopefully with some airplay sales will sustain themselves.

I had hoped for a little more for Chingo Bling, he did crack the Billboard 200 but at #123 so get out and support some more southside Houston music, it's actually a pretty good album overall with guests like Fat Pat and Paul Wall.

I talked to Grandaddy Souf the other day on the phone about the Ozone Awards weekend pic of him laid out on the ground and don't believe the rumors because that's not how it really went down. I know lots of gossiping high school girls like to post trash to get people talking, but you hear the facts here.

David Banner 'So Special'

Yep another day and we're talking a little more David Banner. Well we're not really talking about him so much as we're checking out another track. It's his new one called So Special and it addresses all of the names he's been going at it with in the headlines as of late and then some. From Oprah Winfrey to Jesse Jackson, Banner goes at some big names with some real valid points. Don't worry though he didnt forget about Rev. Sharpton either, this track hits them all square in the face with some reality checks.

Check out David Banner's So Special

But don't stop there, get a peek inside for a little video from that UGK documentary that you might not have seen.

It's not breaking news but alot of you that view the site might not have seen any of it yet. So this is for the UGK fans because I know there are plenty of you out there.

Bits and Pieces

Today's blog is a little of everything. Sure we know by now that UGK is #1 and the haters are still hating. Plies got himself a #2 spot and that deserves a shout out even though I'm not a fan of his music. I'm not one to hate on another man doing his thing and getting his money.

plies.jpg

Your man Chamillionaire made the Forbes Hip Hop Cash Kings list with $11 million in the next to last spot of the top 20. He was the only "real" dirty south rapper on the list, so that makes you wonder where was Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Lil Flip, and others who aren't even rappers from Texas. I know there are plenty of people talking about stacking a lot of money but when it came to adding it up they didnt make the list. There's an E! special with Forbes supposed to show this weekend on the Hip Hop Cash Kings so check it out. And you can see the full list on SOHH Atlanta here! (yes there are other southern artists, i know you didnt get the joke now)

Shout out to Tum Tum for picking up an Ozone award! TBG'z Up!

As always its a Friday so if you've got a hot event happening in your local area then post it up in the comments and let people know where it's going down this weekend. Stay on your grind haters and hustlers and Ima stay on mine! It's the weekend get out there and enjoy the 100 weather.

UGK Tops Billboard 200

That's right its been years in the making but the boys from PA have finally made their way to topping the Billboard 200 on their latest album Underground Kingz. Sales of 160,000 in the albums first week helped push them up to the top. The real question is how long until they can get a platinum award. Will the sales hold steady or drop off fast and how many weeks do you think it's going to be until they go platinum status?

And for those of you hating and debating thats 160,000 scanned, not 80,000 sold and then doubled for it being a double disc. Soundscan counts scans of each retail unit sold, RIAA counts discs, so this is 160,000 retail units scanned sold and for RIAA it's 320,000 discs moved. UGK 4 LIFE!

David Banner Making Headlines

As much as David Banner is in the headlines around here and the net lately he better hope his upcoming album is going to live up to the hype. From dropping out of the Rock the Bells tour for creative differences to battling Rev Sharpton. Banner is all over the place lately. You can see this short video clip from SOHH news where Banner tells you how he really feels. So you tell us, are you looking forward to the upcoming Banner album? And read here to see how Rev Sharpton responds to Banner.

Don't worry I didnt forget that today August 14th is the release date for Chingo Bling's first album since signing his imprints new deal with Asylum. The album entitled 'They Cant Deport Us All' is bigger than just a title and album Chingo says. As always Im sure the album should be entertaining and funny, I know Im going to support the man by going and buying a copy and getting a review up in the near future.

Fam-Lay 'Da Beeper Record' Video

Yeah, that's right Fam-Lay is back and if you haven't already seen the new video that's done by none other than Hype Williams, well here it is. It's got that hot Hype Williams look to it, I dont know about the song, I can't say I like it personally. But the video looks pretty hot and so do some of the ladies in it.

In addition to that I dont want you to forget that the new Chingo Bling is coming out tomorrow. Album is titled 'They Can't Deport Us All' and it should be a good one. Chingo is always creative and funny with his music. So grab it while you can and I'll probably talk a little about it in the next day or two. Check out the commerical for the album. You can also check out a free track Chingo Bling Ay Wey Wey by clicking the link.

Blog Beefin

What's up internet gangsters? I thought I'd take a minute to share a little track from my boy Hezeleo and I think it says what a lot of us are thinking when reading these sites and comments sometimes. I know a lot of you keyboard warriors spend a lot of time on moms AOL account thinking up tough guy lines to throw at other internet g's so I know you'll appreciate this track. Post this ......

Let me state it better, and lets see who can predict what position UGK will debut at on the Billboard 200?

A Bay Bay (ratchet remix)

Can you tell me if are you feeling that A Bay Bay (ratchet remix) song or video? I didn't quite realize that A Bay Bay had taken off or become that big outside of the south. But I guess seeing it on all the teenie video shows its a given that it's going to blow up even bigger.

So its got quite a cast of guest appearances for a club hit, from the Game to Baby, or even Angie Locc and Jadakiss, but you cant forget about Boosie either. I'll admit I didnt like the original song, and I'm not feeling the remix either, what about you?

An interesting twist is that the man that inspired the A Bay Bay chant has just been arrested according to the Shreveport Times for a rape and intimidating a witness charge this week. I won't speak on rumors as to what might have happened, it's up to the court system to play this one out.

Underground Kingz!

It's a simple title because today is finally the day that the new UGK double disc Underground Kingz arrives in stores. It's just about 9am here in Texas so Im about to pick up my copy at the local store in the next hour or so and I'm opening up this blog to let you all share your reviews and thoughts on the album all through today and part of tomorrow after you've picked up your copy.

ugkugk.jpg

I've already heard it, I've got the download and have been listening to it for a day. But I'm going to buy it as well to support these two guys out of PA that have been making some music that I've been listening to for a minute now. Plus, I want to get that DVD that's included.

So post your thoughts, reviews and anything else you have to say about UGK and the new Underground Kingz album in the comments today as you get your copy and listen to it for the first time. What are your favorite tracks, best collabo, best lyric? Do you think this will hit #1 on the charts, how fast will it go platinum, what do you think first week sales will be like?

Bun B Take Back Your Myspace

Man I can't help it I've got to say something about this one. There are some bigger artists that don't handle their own myspace accounts, you probably already realized that or maybe you didnt. Well the one that just kills me on the regular is the Bun B myspace account because it's not handled by Bun B and I'm not sure he would like the way it was run, and it might not even be something he can control.

Why am I speaking up on this one, because this Bun B myspace with the massive friend account sends out more bulletins a day than Lil Wayne does new songs and thats a lot. I had this one of my friends list because Im a UGK fan and Im sure many of you could say the same. But everyday its 10 times a day with bulletins that have not a thing to do with Bun B. It's just one spam message after another for the young kid running this account and it rarely has anything to do with UGK and its not promoted by Bun B.

I just had to get that off my chest, I hate to see people taking advantage of someone elses name to build their own. I know I removed this account off my list tonight and Im doing the same with others. In case you didnt know, the Pimp C account isnt handled by Pimp C either.

Free Trae Mixtape

I dont know if you guys have seen it already but a free Trae mixtape has been floating around for a few days now. I've been listening to it since the day it came out and it's not bad at all, especially if you're already a Trae fan you'll like it. It's good to get a fresh mixtape from one of the Houston All Stars to at least listen to until that UGK comes out. So with all that said grab the mixtape and then let us know what you think of it!
