I think people take the whole king of the south thing too seriously, when the truth is there are many legends, kings, dons (whatever you want to call them) down south. Whats not debateable is the fact that T.I. is the hottest rapper in the game right now from any region period. And it's because he is makin the hottest music right now. First off, like it or not, down south rap is like the eastern conference in the NBA. Its not as good as up north. period. However, TI is king because he said it. I've listened to all of TI's albums and he's been sayin it(evrybody praises Im Serious but Trap Musik is a classic). He's adressed this topic on almost every album, and it boils down to...I came up with it, I am it. Like he said, he started the new era dope boy rpper, wasnt the first, but look whats happened to the game since '24's'

I personally don't think T.I. is the "King of the South". If u are a hip-hop dude, u know Scarface is the King of the South. But, when T.I. first came out, he called himself that. Now, if anyone took offense, niggaz would have said something. But, at the same time, people probably didn't think he would blow like he did. He respects the greats like Face, UGK, Outkast, so I ain't mad at him. What I am worried about is these people who don't know anything about the history of down south hip-hop, and really think T.I. is the King of the South. It's a shame in rap that legends don't hold the same type of respect as legends in rock-n-roll. It's like hip-hop is too generational. Now, I'm an East Coast dude, but I respect South artist because they do they best to let the world know who influenced them. They still help make legends relevant. East Coast (well NY) rappers are too about themselves. Like, a true hip-hop fan knows that Jay-Z was inspired by Big Daddy Kane. But, Hov doesn't let the world know that. To this day, people who love Hov, don't know who Big Daddy Kane is. To me, that's a shame. And that's because niggaz is selfish on the East Coast. As for the current generation of down south rappers, the combination of everything does make T.I. the King of the South right now. He's not as nice as Ludacris, but he makes music that is more in-tune with what's really going on in black America. Ludacris is nice, but he is too commercial. I have never been able to listen to a whole Ludacris album. Wayne, he spits. Maybe u can say he's nicer than T.I. also. But, Wayne is a fraud. T.I. makes the south look good. Wayne doesn't have his own identity in my opinion. He came out one way, then he studied Hov and took his whole style. He talks gangsta shit, but everyone knows that it's not reality, and it was never reality for this nigga. He's been rappin since he was a little kid. When did he have time to be in streets and hold hammers as he claims in his raps. Mainstream America may think that the South loves Lil Wayne, but for as many people that do, there are just the same that don't. T.I. embodies everything a hip-hop artist is. He flows sick, he makes quality music (most of the time), and what he raps about his life. For now, he is the King of the South.

I would say that TI is the King of the South at the moment, and Imma tell you why... Cause noone stays King forever. It's like... Being President. You runnin shyt while you on top, but... Eventually your time is up, or you get dethroned, and it's time for the new guy to hold the title. Now TI did have the best selling hiphop album in 2006, so... That should hold some weight. That's because Jay-Z dropped at the end of 2006, and 50 Cent and Eminem did not put out an album in 2006. But... In my opinion, there has been a bunch of King's of their time. You got Scarface, then UGK. You got Outkast... Master P held it for a while. Then onto this new generation of Ludacris and TI. Luda was King for a minute, but I gotta give it to TI at the moment. Lil Wayne is nice, but... I don't know too many people admitting to him being a good representation of the south. He represents from a lyrical standpoint, but... Nobody really believes him, so... That takes away from his story. He could just be himself, and he could be runnin shyt!!! Nah... He wanna be a dope-boy, and a brand new member of Bloods. But anyway... I don't live in Atlanta so I really can't say, but is T.I. even King of his own city? Please be honest with yourselves in answering that question.

In my opinion its really difficult to crown a "King of the South" it's like Nigg@s in New York 'arguing about who's the best MC; Biggie, Jay-Z, or Nas'.

Hearing Mr. Clifford Harris (T.I.) refer to himself as King reminds me of a quote from ABC's mini-series Empire from last summer; "Beacause you call YOURSELF Caesar does not make it so."

And thus begins "T.I. vs. T.I.P." with our erstwhile protagonist contemplating if this rap shit is really worth it any more, all the while confusing the fictional Atlantic Records employees on the other end of the phone with his slang. The first pair of parenthesis was Joe Stuffedshirt not getting it while the last line was his exasperated secretary explaining to him just how clueless he really is. It's quite the provocative way to open a new album when you're dropping one of the summer's most anticipated albums and you're looking for your label to push sales through the roof, but fortunately that's all part of the plan for "T.I. vs. T.I.P." Rather than trying to push buttons at his label (which would certainly not be unprecedented for disgruntled MC's to do) he's trying to illustrate the dichotomy between the artist who would give it all up to live a normal life and the self-described King of Atlanta who balls like no one else.

There it is on the first single - the braggadocious cocky man who's got more hits than Pete Rose and isn't afraid to talk about it; the man who seemingly runs a bigger drug cartel than Tony Montana in his prime.

I don't think Atlantic is recouping so hard off Clifford Harris that he has to quit rapping as T.I. and go back to scrapping and hustling. While "T.I. vs. T.I.P." is presented as the balance of opposing forces which you can call the good versus the bad, the man versus the monster or any other cliche you like, the only real opposition here is the other rappers who he's competing with for that number one spot. You've heard a lot from the various rap websites and magazines about all the drama in T.I.'s life but frankly it takes a backseat to the music here. T.I. albums usually feature a half-dozen songs or more that sound like they could be chart-topping singles at any time and "T.I. vs. T.I.P." is no exception. The Wyclef produced (and guest starring) "You Know What it Is" is laced with hypnotic siren sounds and a finger-snapping drum track to keep the dancefloor moving. Just Blaze sets a frentic pace with the string laced "Help is Coming" and T.I. matches by spitting at a speed Twista would be impressed by. Eminem & Jeff Bass help T.I. "Touchdown" and Em even makes a guest appearance on the cut. There's so many choices for singles you could hardly go wrong picking ANY track - even Jay-Z and Busta Rhymes make cameos on the album on "Watch What You Say to Me" and "Hurt" respectively.

For T.I. fans who have long been waiting for the seemingly oft-delayed "T.I. vs. T.I.P." the good news is there's nothing to worry about. While the fictional war between wanting to quit and become a man of peace does battle with the Godless hustler who just wants his by any means necessary, the real life relationship between T.I. and Atlantic Records is sound enough that they were obviously prepared to go big budget and keep "Big Shit Poppin'" for Mr. Harris. It takes two to tango though and if T.I. weren't the charismatic, energetic, hitmaker T.I.P. it wouldn't matter how much of a promotions and marketing budget they laid out for him. Thankfully the Bankhead rapper you know and love ain't change a damn thang and while this album may not blow down the doors to the Rap Hall of Fame as the greatest of all-time it offers a comfortable consistancy that should keep it hot in your Hummer all summer long.
