The Return of UGK: It's About Damn Time

ugk1.jpg

Wuz the deal Houston? It is time for the return of that old school, bad ass, southern duo that we all know as UGK. As most of you know, the Underground Kingz have been planning to drop that new album called U.G.K.Underground Kingz. Bun B did his own thang while the Pimp was locked upand put out that Trill, and we all know that was fire. Pimp C got out the can and Rap-A-Lot released Pimpilation Compilation. However, we all know how much anticipation there has been looking forward to a new UGK album, and the date is set. The album was scheduled to drop on December 27th of this year, but the word from Jive Records is it was pushed back and is now scheduled to be released February 27th of '07.

R.I.P [insert name here]

Before I start this, to every moron who is going to come at me and say I'm disrespectful, or a hater, or whatever you clones are gunna call me, I got one thing to say: Fuck you. I am not tryin to be disrespectful to any late great DJ, MC, rapper, or human being. I am not spitting on anyone's grave. I am not saying that the dead should not be paid their respects. I believe that late great hip hop icons who have passed on should be revered and remembered, as well as learned from.

I hate to say it cuz it’s the most overused line ever...but...Houston, we have a problem.

I've noticed somethin the last few weeks. I have completely stopped watchin BET and MTV and MTV 2 and all that shit because they play nothin but garbage, and that entire music video industry is all about money and power now. They don't give a fuck about music. I still listen to the radio occasionally, but in my opinion, the radio seems completely run by money and shit, too. It's like I could drop a mixtape, head up to 97.9 or 104.9 and hand one of those fat ass DJs a picture of Benjamin Franklin and they would play my single for me two times an hour, every hour, for three weeks. Haha! I mean seriously though, if you consider yourself a true hip hop fan and you don't think that hip hop radio is a scam then you have some serious thinkin to do. Money is the root of all evil, remember? Well I'm not sayin I don't want 20 million dollars (if you want to give me 20 million, please contact me), but I feel hip hop is imploding. The industry is so crooked, so biased, so money-fueled, that the whole thing is gettin fucked. It's no wonder to me that Nas is droppin "Hip Hop is Dead."

WTF is Up with Rap-A-Lot?

WTF is with Rap-a-lot? I know Scarface and J Prince are really respected and shit. I understand that Face is one of the most, if not the most, respected artist to come outta the South and that he paved the way for a lot of shit to go down. But what the fuck is with Rap-a-lot?

Don't Hate on the Ones Who Paved the Way

Okay, okay,
We're gonna do this one especially for the haters ...
I noticed a lot of you had shit to say over the weekend about Big Pokey. "He's old, he's played out, nobody wants to hear that shit anymore... " You wanna hear about Rasaq, Jokaman ... the new breed. Fine. But you can't call yourself a real Houston hip-hop head and disrespect its founders, namely, Big Pokey. Whatever you have to say about him, whoever you'd rather listen to instead of him, you have to respect his name in Houston. Period. And that's all. And now, so the youngins can quit complainin ...

What's up H-Town. Happy Turkey Day Weekend! Check out this freestyle and a few videos from ya boy, Big Pokey, one of the best to ever do it, out of Houston and have a safe holiday. Get back at ya Monday.

28 Days and Running: The Wait for UGK

What does that title mean? Well it's 28 days. Thats right, exactly four weeks out and we're all waiting on UGK to drop the much-anticipated and awaited jewel of an album. How many of you can still hear or listen to that UGK "One Day" occasionally while you're riding? Me, I hear it all the time and I'm looking for them to drop something like that on us again.

Can you remember when:

gangsta_nip_news.jpg
Gangsta Nip came with that crazy shit?

Street Military was hard as hell?

Fat Pat made you feel his pain?

Big Mike came wtih that player flow?

Bun B ripped every thang?...(still do!)

Wicked Cricket hyped the crowd?

You know you're all reading this and repping your MySpace 17 times a day trying to hook up with a bopper from down the block, or across the city. But what else can you find on MySpace to share that we haven't already seen?

YO, I'm getting straight to the point, is there still BEEF between Mr. Jones and KOOPA!! Yeah, its one thing to say it's squashed, but are there still subliminal coming out the mouth.

Z-RO.jpg

Ten minutes ago, I just went and bought Z-Ro's I'm Still Livin. I also picked up Let the Truth Be Told. I'm listening to it as I write because I had to "get my mind right" before I started this.

Every time I see an email in my inbox that says, "FWD: You Know You're From Houston If..." I start to smile. It brings me back to a time when, although we all wanted Houston to blow up like it is now, all we cared about was making sure we respected OUR music. Here are some of my favorite lines:

Peep Mag gettin at you e-thugs right quick and eatin the fuck up outta the track....LOL!!

I know alot of you wont agree with me on the title of this post, but who cares. What I said, is exactly how I feel. Where in the hell is Magnificent aka Magno? That's what I wanna know. Dude had to have one of the most popular buzzes outside of Swishahouse that I have seen for anybody to come before him. So why hasn't he dropped any major label stuff?

Two years ago, Houston burst on the scene with a line up of young superstars poised and ready to take the syrupy slowed up culture to the next level. First came the song "Still Tippin," that not only became the signature sound for Houston artists, but set off a trend of producers/artists adding screwed up choruses to just about every track released (can we say "The Runners?") Then came the platinum plaques -- or should I say, two platinum plaques -- and a few, almost, but not good enough to see platinum CDs.

Three things. First What's goin on over at Swisha House?

Hip-Hop is Not Dead, It's in Houston

krackernuttz.jpg

I wanna start off by saying that for those of you that are not from Houston or ever been here, it is not what you think. There is an entirely different music culture down here that had a very deep and rich history. I must admit, I'm not from here but have grown to love the culture down here. Not only the music but also the talent that we have in this city. Check out this video (below) ... It's Baby Jae who is one third of The Kracketnuttz the #1 night show in Houston on 97.9 The Box. He is by far the most talented DJ that I know ... (no disrespect to the other... I just don't know them).

1) Where in the holy Hesus is Aztek Escobar? ( You Roc-fanatics believe
me now?)

Who knows? could be getting shit together making sure it's right before it comes out, just cuz you don't hear from somebody doesn't always mean they fell off.

grill.bmp
2) Do folks really feel comfortable with diamond encrusted grills in
their mouths?

Hell yeah, it's a southern thing and we rep that shit with pride

3) How come Lil' Troy's "Wanna Be a Baller" gets slept on a lot?
Because at the time Houston wasn't getting that much exposure but you can't deny it's a certified classic

SouthParkMexican.jpg
4) Would you still support South Park Mexican, knowing that he's in jail for molesting a 9-year old girl?
Every man has his own personal battles that he has to deal with and it's unfortunate that S.P.M. got caught up in it cuz he was about to blow on a national level. A lot of people have forgotten about him but true fans know he had the streets on lock. Free S.P.M.!

5) Will ESG, K-Rino, and Trae ever blow up?
Personally I think they don't have to blow up. They're living legends in Houston anyways and they've haven't sold out which gets them more respect from they're fanbase.

Turn Off that Bullshit!

I used to love the radio. For all those fellow Houstonians who remember the day when you could hear songs like "25 Lighters" and "Ball N Parlay" 10 times a day, what happened? These weren't national artists (not at the time, at least), but our celebrated regional stars.

Big Pokey wasn't on MTV everyday.

Keke wasn't showin off his crib.

Aint nobody know a damn thing about DJ DMD.
DJ_DMD.jpg

But stations like 97.9 The Box supported the city's underground stars as much as the national representas. But now I hate the radio. With a passion.

Houston Got Next.jpg

Aight, whats poppin Houston? Its ya boy C-Lo droppin in to help you people pass the time and maybe put you up on some acts out of the H, you might know about or you might not know about. The music scene in Houston is really poppin off right now, contary to the belief of some of you haters. Now, check it out, It might not all be quality, but im gonna throw out some names of some of the new cats you might wanna check out, that I think have the potential to catch the baton in this H-Town marathon and rep it right.

Where is the hate?

Man I'll tell you where the hate is...it's down south. All the hate from the whole damn country been sent down here priority mail or some shit from these East Coast haters and the rest of the damn country. Now....Houston, TX I'm talkin to you.

SOHH Houston,
We announced yesterday that we're looking for a new blogger to take over this column and the response was great. And varied. So much so, that we need to establish some rules in this bitch.
