What's Next for Houston?

So, what's next for H-Town hip-hop after a year of much heralded hegemony? Will Houston and the south in general continue to ride high or will another region retrieve the reign from the dirty dirty? I've been asked this question so many times that it's almost inevitable for me to ignore. My initial response has always been: "Can you handle the truth?"
The truth is that nobody milks a good thing halfway...at least, not in hip-hop. The corporate enchiladas in the music industry are not that nice. Their main obligation is to sap the hottest artist, trend, or movement (in this case) until there's nothing left. So, does that mean Houston will still get its shine on in '06?
Unfortunately, the southern movement appears to have worn itself out. Our muse may have ran out the same year people discovered that we had something to muse about. Think about it, with the exception of Scarface and The Product's highly slept-on gem, One Hunnid, what other Houston album has graced the market since the beginning of the year? Unlike 2005, which saw blossoming releases from Paul Wall, Slim Thug, and Chamillionaire, 2006 has been pretty bleak in that department, with only Paul slated for a second go-round this year.
Not so fast, though. Let's not forget that Paul, Cham, and Slim Thug all dropped in the second quarter of '05. Delay is not synonymous with denial. Better still, there are a few other fledgling rappers that'll keep Houston on the hip-hop map this year. My prediction is that the Screwston sound will undergo a musical surgery, and people will start paying attention to a different style that they didn't realize was part and parcel of Houston hip-hop.
Allow me to introduce you to some of the less-talked about vanguards that are poised for greatness in the next couple of years:

You know what's going to change in 2006/7 for Houston? It's going to get better.
Once the buzz fizzles, all the medoicre artists that got on just because the city is hot will began to starve (i.e. Paul Wall). Only niggas that are going to make it is Slim Thug, Chamillionaire, and Trae.
I'm actually concerned about Z-Ro. This new found success/fame he's found with Rap-A-Lot may hinder his drive. Let the Truth Be Told had some real tight tracks, but it had filler. Like 12 of 17 were good, no more than 14. That isn't like Ro at all.

I don't know if this is true, but a 23-year-old woman claims that she received the deadly HIV virus from a well-known Houston rapper. According to mediatakeout.com, all parties involved are legally sworn to secrecy in documents signed about a month ago. So, there is no need to expect anything crazy to leak out. At any rate, this woman wants $25 million in damages. What Houston rapper has all that money? Now, this woman claims that she was in a loving, committed relationship with the unnamed rapper for about two years, but found AIDS medicine (Combivir and Sustiva) in a clothes drawer. The woman took a test and was reportedly given the bad news. This rumor is crazy and I definitely hope that its 100% false, but we'll see if its got some merit as time passes.

Flip may not be all that now, but back in his day the nigga could flow. But no, he was never the freestyle king. He said it himself on "The Way We Ball" that he wrecked 2 screw tapes. E.S.G aired him out in an interview about that, saying most of the S.U.C. vets have been on about 20-30 tapes. The main freestyle kings were E.S.G. and Fat Pat.
