Desperate Hip-Hop Wives: Married to the Game
SOHH spoke with The Source's former Editor-in-Chief Kim Osorio, artist manager El, former Aftermath executive Tashion Macon, promotions manager Kim Trick and Hip-Hop journalist and author Giselle Zado-Wasfie about their opinions on the real life treatment of women professionals in the male-dominated Hip-Hop industry.
These stories are raw...
We all know what happened with Kim, who vowed that she was telling the truth about the charges. But the good stuff comes with Tashion Macon -- former record exec at Laface and Aftermath -- talks about how she's heard women execs get cussed out:
"I've witnessed men cursing women," Tashion recalls. "Calling them 'bitches' to their faces. There was no reprimand. General Managers didn't put a letter in the file. And I'm talking about an artist could say it, a colleague could say it, a manager could say it," Tashion reveals. "Women have been cursed from one side of the table to the other. I've heard men say, 'She's not getting enough sex that's why she's bitchy' or ;'If you give her some of that dick, she'll get up off that budget.' Things like that have been said and I've heard them say it."
In another poignant segment, author/journalist Giselle Wasfie talks about how she was sexually touched by a southern rap mogul:
"If you're a female music journalist, you're interviewing guys and you're trying to engage their trust. But then at one point you'll see them looking at your legs a little long." Wasfie recalls one particular incident with a popular rapper who'll remain nameless. "I took a picture with a major southern mogul and he put his arm around me. But when I looked back at the picture, I noticed the position of his arm is a little to close to my breast."
These are just a couple of the highlights from the peice which is way overdue but well done by Jay Smooth. Personally, I know of a few woman who've been straight up groped -- one after an industry party on the way home in a company car. It's that hectic out there.
Ken Thompson -- attorney for Kim Osorio -- vows he's gonna change the game -- so much so that folks will be saying "remember The Source" b/4 they commit sexual violations at work. This could be the tsunami that finally turns the rap music industry -- including the titty videos and sex-charged lyrics -- upside down.

Is it just me or is it ironic her last name is trick?

I think it's just you. What point are you trying to make because I think you're mixing up Kim Trick and Kim Osorio?!

I worked with Kim O. Im the road manager for an artist that she was doing a story on and we were spending time for a couple of days while she followed us and did the story. Although I wouldn't have conducted myself in a more professional manner knowing that all eyes were on me, i cant say that she was loose with any of the rap artists we were around. I can say her behavior was kinda "Chickenish" for a grown woman that was supposed to be the editor for the most popular hip hop magazine. Past expierence had already shown me that the majority of the people that work at tha source were a buncha clownz, but look at what examples they are given to follow. I figured that Kim O would know there is a bullseye on her back and come that much more correct. What i am realizing though about hip hop in general is that professionalisim is sadly not a staple of the game. I wish her all the best though..

Look, these women are only goin' on about these things now that they are in a hot spot. My question is this: Why only now? why haven't they mentioned these things were happenin' then when they were happenin'? Don't ruin hip hop 4 us jus' cuz u's being a silly hoe! It's comon knowledge men cannot suppress how they feel 'bout a broad especially if this woman is too in tha artist's face, probably also leading the artist on. Stay the f*** away from hip hop if u can't handle shit that's all

My comment on this previous article is that okay no woman desrves to be treated with disrespect unless she gives it to herself. The meaning of that is this; a woman disrespects herself when she acts like a hoe, groupie, or a bopper. Now when she sees that man who is celeb and is all on his jock left and right, then the lower class artist peeps it or her peers does and they go from that. Sometimes the individual has to look at themselves to it's entirity as to what did I do to cause this situation to rise, and what could I have done to prevent it. The problem and it's with male/female is no one places blame on their own fault.

I work and deal with young black males and I can't relate. Stop showing all your teeth, pull your (mini) skirts down or your (lowrise, thong showing)pants up and
stop being drunk at every party, dealing with 12 dudes they know at the same time and maybe y'all will get some respect.

First of all don't know why some rappers even get married look at Snoop Dog he is so funny.Him and his different women on the red carpet in chains and cuffs.Look at P.diddy when he was going out with j.lo he had know respect for her he was cheating, jealous, childish. I don't know what Beyonce sees in Jay-z and I ain't talking bout his looks but his actions,He been pissing on girls Sleeping With all the groupes around the world, to think of Jay-z makes me wanna vomit. But Hey she said she want a "solider" Well!P.diddy thought j.lo was God's gift to the world yet he didn't know how to treat her or any female. He was all over the place kissing cuddling different girls.I hate the fact that these scummy rappers and even some atlethes like Kobe Bryant,Dennis Rodman are displayed to all the worlds media and give's the world a negative view of African American men.I mean just visit some countries like Japan,Europe,India and they won't tell them to their face but behind doors they think Black men are "OVER ACTIVE SEXUAL BEAST" just because of these filthy rappers and Athletes. I heard the jokes about blacks, "Why do Niggers always have sex on their Brain cause they got pubic hair on their heads".Also the "AIDS" joke the joke about why black men have red eyes during sex from the mace.Dennis Rodman gave the world the perseption that every black man worships white girls.

I am a female journalist and I interview rappers, r&B singers, ect. for print magazines and for my website http://www.thabiz.com. You just have to stay on the job. I'm not really commenting on the women in question because I don't know their stories, I only know my story. I come in with my digital camera and my recorder, get my story and go. I don't hang out at the hotel (although I did in my early 20's), now I am all about the story. I won't even do hotel interviews unless it is in a lobby or conference room. You have to draw the line and be professional. It also depends on the type of story you are writing. If you are writing a feature that requires you to spend a lot of time with an artist, just know your bounderies. I have some real crazy things from my early writing days. I mean nothing sexually ever happened, but I hung out with a popular rap act in the 90s while them and their entarouge were doing some serious serious drugs, (im not talking just some blunts), I spent the night at another artists hotel room because like 4 women had passed out and I was the only "sane" person and they said that they were afraid if I left him and his boys with these passed out chicks someone might cry rape in the morning.
I am now 30 and married with children, so I would never do that again, but men will be men. Of course they shouldn't harass women in a work environment, but I don't care, they are men and we are women and if we give them half and inch they will try to take a mile.
Being a female journalist is exciting. I am having fun thinking about my days of past and I enjoy now being all about the story. I can't tell you how many times in the 90's I was invited to go to the next city or the next town, I may have been a broke college writer but I knew that nothing comes without strings or expectations. I had fun though.
I don't know, I vibe with everyone I interview, I enjoy my job and I am sooo glad I don't punch a clock or work for anyone. Freelance and my website and the books.
In the past I used to be a sports journalist, you have to stay focused. I'm sure some of these female journalist in the back of their head might want to land an athelete or a rapper. I always stayed professional and true to myself and my story, but in my single days if some rich interview subject asked me out hell yeah I would say yes (if they were cute and not married0. I know it's a sort of a rush interviewing someone that you know has like a $50 million dollar contract and a big old house. It's a rush.

As a 30 something professional black woman, I know that my success in business is not only because of my high intelligence and excellent sales technique. My looks are 75% of the win. That's what gets me in the door. But...what I do after a client gets a glance is the 25% that seals the deal. In a male dominated field, women must be graceful and their auora must demand respect. Doing this without appearing to be the ice queen is difficult. But a true professional knows their client and can read a room (hotel or lobby) before they enter. So basically these "professional" writers need to know their craft stop complaining about what others are doing. Some men do need home training however these women are in positions of power. Be smart, expose these artists for who they are. The pen is a mighty weapon. Use it wisely and you can change the game.

First of all I am a female in the industry own my own video show my own copration plus I work 6 days a week as a radio personality now with all that said I meet a lot of artist and as female in the game it is hard but i support these women standing up 'cuz I go thru bullshit everyday don't asssume that all chicks are groupie. I turn down offer after offer to go out with artist after interviews when i just wanna break bread and make doe just like dudes so I try to be real standoffish which is wack because it limits my politicing I even wear a fake wedding band to try to deal with these men and not bruise their egos which is another wack game we females must play 'cuz if we don't the shut us down but here's an example I interview Ying Yang Twins n the radio when they came in the studio they continued to referr to me as donkey butt now I'm not a groupie in the street or club but still they couldn't respect me as a professional how would you feel if everywhere you go people called you a worhtless nigga or good for nothing cracker that is how violated I feel in the game that is why I build my own companies to not work for these ass hole and that's word

Some of these Attitudes& Comments explain why AIDS statistics& Illegitimate children rates are so high in the African American community.Just because a girl dresses a certain way or act a certain way does not make her a bi---!Not every girl wants to sleep with you!Everybody wants to be a pimp, when in reality they are only hunting down a tough life or a early& painful death. As I said before people like P.diddy&Snoop Dogg do very little to help the situation.P.diddy is all over the place trying to find his next "trophy girl" to flunt his pimping style.Snoop Dogg is only degrading&embrassing himself as a man.And knowbody should be disrespected or feel oppress regardless of their situation.Because some of these rappers want white Business America to respect them and they always scream how prejudice&unfair those people are.But when you ask them why they disrespect females they always say the girls "wanna do it".Yeah! They want to do that to themselves the same way rappers want to be taking avantage of by these big record companies.

this is to Nasdaq so every black guy who wears a white t- shirt is a drug dealer right and every white guy with a pick up truck is a red neck right I've been in the game over 5years and there isn't one artist that can say I was on some groupie shit. I'm fine as hell so most try to holla but I have the upmost respect for my self and the game even though the game doesn't respect us i don't expect you to understand it took 300 years of killing and raping my african people to get the world to realize what going on. I agree some women jump for dick but I'm a BOSS my tv show is the only one in the state that has been on for over a year I got the hottest radio show and I'm going places so no DIck is gonna stand in my way so you dudes stop hating on women on the come up Murda Mami's stand up[

No disrepect to women, but hip hop is a male dominated society. For these women to say what they said well, that is just how it is. If you dont like dont get involved. If you act like a hoe you get treated like a hoe. Carry yourself like a real true lady and let them know what is what.
Posted by: Ajizzel | June 2, 2005 12:52 PM
this is an subject I will not touch, because as a man I look at this as a double standard. Men can have all the pussy and shit and be considered a player and a mack, a female can have all the men and dick but be considered a whore. If both male and female are doing the same thing, no one should make a judgement call about who does what in their private time. Eventhough if they are doing their job.
Ajizzel, you are right about the females being a lady, but men as well must be gentleman and not niggers. This is equal rights opprotunity, no one should be subject to sexism.
PEACE
Posted by: Devil Son | June 2, 2005 03:29 PM
Any women that carries herself as a lady, gets her respect. And even when sexist fools diss her for that, they silently respect her. Truth is, many men in the game have NO respect for women at all. Not unless that woman claims her respect. But when you making hella money and hella girls jump on ya, your idea of women gets kinda, um,twisted. Not saying it's right, but these cats are spoilt rotten and hardly can't help themselves. I would be too probably.
Nevertheless my sisters, claim your respect, hold your heads(and skirtline) high, and you SHALL get your respect. If not, just walk out to where you do get it.

The reason these people (male and female) are not professional is because of their backgrounds and the "image" they have to portray. Most people in the rap industry are from the hood. When someone makes it, they get all their homeboys an homegirls and invade the game. They are professionals, professional hustlers mostly. The main problem is with the state of hip-hop today. If you ain't gangsta, you wack. No iced out chain? Lame. No Bentley? Chump. Don't have the newest freshest gear? Scrub. All this information is channeled straight to the ghettos, hoods, and suburbs all day every day. Kids grow up to think they have to have certain things or they are worthless. They commit crimes to get the cash and respect they think they need. The groupies and the rappers make it seem like every girl is a nymphomaniac, or a bitch. All these people say they are doing it for the streets, keepin it real. They don't realize most of their sales are to teens and suburbanites. Hip hop is a powerful thing, and it's being raped as we speak. Stand up and be a man (or woman). Take hip-hop back!
That's as real as it can get.
Posted by: mercmuzik | June 5, 2005 01:07 AM
There really is a problem in hip hop and the world abroad when females think so little of themselves for so long (think since The Chronic song B*tches Ain't Sh*t) and then expect to regain the respect they lost overnight. Mind you, we're not saying that it's O.K. to disrespect females but like Goodie MoB's song "Beautiful Skin" before a man can respect a woman she has to respect herself and unless woman spread that message to her female friends and other females she deems needing to know, its like throwing your pearls to swine. Women are God's gift to men, the woman was made for the man not the man for the woman, but men need women or else they will die and leave not a trace of themselves behind to even prove that they ever existed except for angry women. Women possess the valuable eggs needed for cloning and both genders have the body tissue needed to replace the DNA. If women wanted to they could just clone themselves and charge men an arm and a leg literally to have the pleasure to reproduce with them again. Many have forgotten that the purpose of sex is for reproduction, but since pimpdom, everything a person desires of the opposite sex is available for a price.
Pimps are successful because they see the physical worth of a woman that she does not see in herself and the pimp is lucrative in that he cultivates and exploits that to his financial benefit and to benefit the self esteem of a woman. The woman's desire, regardless of how beautiful she is, is to feel the males expression of being grateful for being able to have the priviledge to gaze at her beauty and to be in her company. Moreso than the verbal expression of gratefulness is the mental massage that reassures the woman of how wonderful she is as a complete entity, physically, as well mentally and spiritually. You see a woman is not prone to orgasm of desire for a man, but moreso of a satisfaction of the wonderous depths of herself. Mind you some women do not know their vagina from a whole in the ground and their orgasm comes as simple as the comprehension and contemplation of a mere hole in the ground wherein one makes a rudimentary splash. When a woman realizes that man that is able to make her realize her depths are deeper than a hole in the ground, but herself as a whole woman only that man is able to make her reach orgasm, because that man reassures her of her worth as somebody. She is not being played by that man because he is to her as a key to herself, she being priceless, but yet worthless and unsatisfied with herself without the key to herself to unlock her riches. She is played not when she is tricking because the johns pay a fortune for a chance to unlock the priceless, yet without the key to her, they indeed pay for her yet only get themselves in return as if they had but masterbated in her, but never do they get her, for that part of her is locked away safely. The woman plays herself when she fails to realize that she can unlock herself with the key of the pimp that allowed her to discover herself. The pimp could never unlock her pleasures without exposing the key with which it is possible. Such a key is not physical, but true words. Yes the truth of the woman is the key to unlocking her, but once the key to her is revealed unto her, she has but to do one thing with the true words that the exploitive pimp does not and has yet to do, and that is to have faith in the truth in words that she is as great as has been revealed to her.
Where once her orgasm was too aloft for her to believe it was ever possible, she is now able to access it whenever, wherever, and with whomever she pleases and access it with the knowledge that to share it with another other than herself is a blessing to that other as well as a personal pleasure unto herself.
Without ever having the key to herself, every orgasmless, sexual ordeal leaves the woman looking toward the last man she had sex with wondering what it would have been like if she had orgasmed or if he could have brought her to orgasm and with that mentality she leaves a portion of herself behind with that last sexual partner and is in-debted to leave a portion of herself with the sexual partner to come because she knows not the key to her sexual depths and wonders which sexual partner will have it if ever any does. Until she is brought unto the knowledge of herself she will be no more than a sexual calisthenics parnter for the sexually frustrated male and her frustration at never being satisfied will only frustrate the male more that he could not satisfy a wonderful peace of pussy that fell into his lap or literally jumped into his lap. Until she can satisfy herself with the aid of the knowledge of herself, without a man, she will hardly be able to orgasm unless her contemplation of herself is a hole in the ground, wherein the shallow can make a splash in shallow depths effortlessly and with no more thought than to sadist-fy a novice masochist, no offense intended, to c-section mothers. Mothers who have endured full labors understand.
Its not easy for men to respect women nowadays when they are forced into manhood so early, many from fatherless dysfunctional homes, many wondering what their mothers did or didn't do to cause their fathers to up and split from their children's life. Many young males are imprisoned early in life and learn about sex in concrete hells where many women are responsible for their imprisonment via unintelligible love, aka young ,foolish love. Like Biggie Smalls said on Me and My B*tch. Sometimes the misogyny of the world is due to misdirected jealousy and simple trial and error where there is no room for mistakes.
Either way you put it though, hip hop is a big enough and powerful enough forum for knowledge of a better way to spread but if we didn't know any better we would say that hip hop nowadays is geared towards influencing people to make mistakes so angry music can sell more. If somebody has a better explanation we welcome it, feel free to enlighten the multitude of us. There's no mre us in hip hop that's why its not strange that gangs are more rampant. people are cliquing up and it wouldn't be surprising if on the dl dudes were regarding females as a totally different species to be prejudiced against. Like Ghostface said on the Pretty Toney album, the song "Be This Way", it doesn't have to be this way. Cats can hate chicks, chicks can be scandalous, ruthless, some dirty, downright conniving h*oes, but we still love'em. Either you love'em or you like'em a lot. We'll love'em ,maybe from a distance or just admire them from afar because some women can be dangerous and you can find your life in shambles for going all out for the wrong ones or the right ones, but through and through we'll chose punani in all of its splendid colors, textures, fragrances, and savory flavors. We're not being sexist or overtly sexual, the woman was made from the rib of the man, that means punani is ours if we ask for it the right way for them to give it to us. Never do we take it by force mind you, men and women must unite for common cause for life and to come together as one, punani is the man and the woman's, the women carry and keep the punani for us and we carry and keep the penis for them. Men and women need not remain divided on issues but find common ground. Sex not sects. Peace to the men that love women and the women that love men. Love is life and life is hardly worth living without love. You can get sex almost anywhere, but love turns a house into a home. PEACE.

Oh Yea, almost forgot, why does Foxy Brown, Ill Na Na sound like a husky dude and when did that become cool. Too many chix are trying to claim the right to be promiscous like guys. We can understand that, but two wrongs do not a right make and maybe that's why black females account for 72% all H.I.V. cases of all ethnicities of women leaving only 28% of all H.I.V. cases to be divided among maybe 4 other ethnic groups, which is an average of 7% per ethnic group, showing logically that black females are doing something wrong in the arena of sex. Does anybody have any ideas. How can all these black females have H.I.V. and the rate for black men is not even a topic. What is it? Are all these chicks laying the same infected handful of dudes or do the guys have it and they are not going to seek medical attention? That's a mystery for Scooby-Doo and the bunch for real. Scary things comes from sleeping around in the 21st century. Gotta watch who you bump uglies with these days or you'll be to be continued or discontinued. Peace.

Wow. I am truly surprised by some of the comments on this board. To say that "hip hop is a male dominated field and if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen" is so silly. It really is. I mean, that's like when people of color discuss the issues of racism they they deal with on a daily basis in corporate environments and someone says, "if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen." I mean, c'mon, where we would be as a PEOPLE and this is specific to black people, if people just walked out and said "forget it, this business shit is just for the white folks."? At some point we have to start redefining boundaries and becoming inclusive. Women undoubtedly contribute a lot to the music industry - and that's beyond record sales - so they, we should have a place where can feel comfortable in this realm. You really think it's cool to disrespect women simply because? I'm not saying it doesn't happen on the reg, i'm asking, do you really think it's cool? See... the thing is, most of us are not in school anymore where we have rules, guidelines and moral codes of conduct to follow - we are left to our level of morality and convictions. Rakim said it best, Know the Ledge - before you fall off!

promotions is my feild. i am a 30something female with a lot of respect for myself and others. i have worked with some of the biggest rappers in the business and i have to say that disrespect is there if you allow it. i have to say that groupies put themselves in a position of disrespect by waiting in the hotel lobbies, following the buses and throwing their panties on stage. i have seen it all. i witnessed something so foul when i had a very BIG (name wise) group in town for a concert.after the show there were about 50 cars of females waiting to follow the bus back to the hotel. now because i am responsible for the artist until they get back to the hotel we had run interference with the cars so they could back without incident, i have to say that it didn't work to well because we still had a large crowd at the hotel. you see i don't claim to know what these girls are thinking but at the end of the day sweetie are nothing but a piece of ass to them and you didn't even get breakfast the next morning because he put you out before the sun came up.
i have never allowed an artist or their roadies to get out of line with me because foremost i walk with my head held high like i deserve to be in this position because of my work not because i have outside beauty. i command respect as well as give to those around me. i don't claim to know these women struggles because everyones story is different but i have seen it happen. i believe that you have to stand up for yourself and put your foot or we will continue to be refered to as BITCHES and is something that i won't stand for from anyone.

Stop confusing Groupies and professionals it's pissing me off everytime you do I own a video show I meet people everyday and I turn down all and I mean all advances from artist. As for the dudes talking about the HIV rate in Blk women remember this there os 0 reported cases of HIV in the Lesbian community so women are getting it from these nasty dudes who sleep with men too and come home to their wives and baby's mothers also guys who sleep with multi. women and you asked about the rate in Black men try 1 out of four plus you nasty bastards never go to the doctor so you would know that you where giving your girl AIDs when we go once or twice a year atleast The problem in these companies have nothing to do with sex white women have slept their way to the top for years it's just these hood certified assholes with issues with their mommy that can't get over one woman in their life doing them wrong I grew up getting hit on by teachers, friends fathers, pretty much any adult Blk male that came around y'all are predators killing the Blk female and she's been holding everything together since our sorry ass men left us years ago check your history and look at your own damn family first

Ms Venom, true to your name you spit it, and most accurately if I may add. Mind you,the comment we made about the H.I.V. rate (not A.I.D.S., but H.I.V. rate) was not made to function as a lid under which African-American females were to be stifled, yet that memo was a check on a drastic imbalance. You would be surprised how many people are terribly unaware of the ratio of the disease in women to men. Oddly enough, it seems that through inciting anger, peoples attention are adequately garnered whereby sugar and sweetness are a dime a dozen taken for granted like kindness for weakness.
Many women who are aware of Down Low Malefactors are sometimes content with that knowledge on a personal level for the sake of protecting self yet, just as we said earlier that the "NOW" bachelorettes are quite eager to exercise promiscuity as strongly as their male counterparts, so have these women and young ladies adopted a casual irreverance (once particular to Black males) towards each other to effectively thwart a practical unity for African-Americans,young and old.
The strength of women lies in their commonality and progressive understanding of most things that are genuinely human and natural. Child birthing has changed from the laboring of bearing life to the new age 1-hour delivery. Sure there may seem to be an unspoken convenience to it all, but the strength of women is compromised somewhere along there. The labor of birthing, which women overcome, whereby all men of integrity are proud to honor women, has been cheapened or lessened. Truly wonderful is the love of a woman for her child despite the shortcomings of its father. She who laboriously loves enough to spiritedly push from her core, hope manifest into the light of day, has truly testafied of the spirit for the justification of life.
The Woman is from the Rib of the Man and so it is that some men are able to recognize how much of themselves are in certain women versus the reflection of the spirit of man in some women. Thus it is detrimental for men to female bash because that is the negative spirit of females in negative men. When women male bash, that is the positive spirit of men in negative women. Protons carry a positive charge whereby they are able to share their energy and Electrons carry a negative charge that's why electrified people are stuck together until all the positive charge of life is depleted at which time the bodies are separable. The woman is flesh of the man's flesh and bone of the man's bone because she was taken out of the man. Genesis 2:24, Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother and shall cleave unto his wife: they shall be one flesh. The man and the woman are compatible. Not every man for every woman but certain men for certain women, 1 Corinthians 15:35-39. All of 1 Corinthians chapter 15 is quite profound. There is a song by A Tribe Called Quest on their "The Low End Theory" album called "Verses from the Abstract" where Q-tip says,
"The thing that men and women need to do is stick together, progressions can't be made if we're separate forever". Easier said than done, but so are washboard abdomenals, ha,ha, ha. PEACE peoples.

Thanks for understanding the plight because it's a fight i have every day Let me tell you what a promoter (male) from my area told me just the other day that I play my shit good that's what he calls me not fucking everyone in the game it's not playing I'm not with holding sex from them to get what I want I'm respecting myself I flirt in my interviews on radio and TV but when the mic is closed and the camera goes off I shake their hands and bid them farewell. I ask only one thing just like when you see a young brother on lock down you see him as lost and un focased know that a young girl that uses sex to define or find herself she does this 'cuz from day one she's taught that whats between her legs is more important than whats between her ears when you get a chance check my site out www.indaciti.net

I'm in my late 30s now but back in the day, I was an MC, a party promoter, and a freelance journalist (not all at the same time). I remember me and my homegirl having breakfast with DJ Polo, Kool G Rap and Mr Magic, and every other question out of Magic's mouth was, "So what's up with that hotel room?" and me and my homie looking at him like he'd sprouted a d!ck between his eyes. We finished our food, bid Polo and G Rap a good morning, and bounced, totally ignoring Mr Magic. Why even dignify his dumb a$$ with a response? I've met mad people in the industry and it's all in how you carry yourself. If you act like a dumb h0, you'll be treated like a dumb h0. If you dress slutty and act loose around cats like that's the only way to get that interview, you're only playing youself, niggas will see right through you, and they'll try to play you, too. If you carry yourself like a lady, and shut down any nigga who steps to you with any type of disrespect, your reputation for not tolerating any silly sh!t from anyone will proceed you. I applied for a writing position at the Source, and was told by the guy I submitted my resume and samples of my work to that I needed to come by his house to tighten up my resume. Tighten--yeah, right. The next chick might have taken him up on his offer, but not this chick. It's harder for someone else to disrespect you when you have self-respect.

This is in response to mondez farrington. It is apparent to me that you are brain washed by the media just like everyone else the world over with access to cable programming. First of all, I don't think you personally know the artist you speak of so how can pass judgement on them ie "Sleeping With all the groupes around the world, to think of Jay-z makes me wanna vomit" Is it because he said he did this in a song? Then your very naive, hanging on every word a rapper says. Second, just because the media happens to focus on what a few black athletes and entertainers do, does not mean and entire race is like that. So I take no one else in the world has sex, weird habbits, etc. Explain white rockers affinity for gratuitous sex and drugs. Lastly Europeans, Asians, Indians have their own fucking issues with sex. Are Asians even allowed to fuck? I mean having more than two kids is against the law in china right? Didn't Indians come up with the Karma Sutra (freaky shit by the way). I've seen enough sick shit from Europe that surpases even the raunchiest hip hop video. They invented shitting and pissing on people, S&M, cunnilingus etc. These ignorant statements are in the same vein as the comments you so eloquently posted. AIDS is a world wide epidemic, it is not a disease that only plagues blacks or the poor. Lastly, you are probably not black because if you were you would have not even listened to the tasteless jokes especially about pubic hair on our heads (Fuck them). With that being said you could never understand the results of 400 years of slavery, and the systematic racism, classism, unemployment, miseducation etc.
By the way if are black, you have some self hate going on, I suggest you get help.

With the exception of a few intelligent posts, this blog features ignorance in it's purest form. If the ignorant posts on here were heroin, a lot of y'all would be walking around scratchin' the back of your necks like that Dave Chapelle character on his show! We Black and Latin folks are our own worst enemies.

J, you seem to speak from the perspective of one who has just entered into the practice of entertaining hip hop and rather hip hop entertains you as so maybe a weekend stripper would. No offense, but the point is understood we hope. Speaking of Hope, that is what separates Hip Hop from rap, rap being merely a small aspect of hip hop which is a composite culture and a way of life and not a way of death.
When degrading women and promoting the corruption of women is the order of the day and one of the focal themes of the music, then it becomes a way of death which is all that can result of the demeaning and destruction of the character of the woman, regardless of whatever race or ethnic background they belong to.
The adopting of susceptibility to vices and the shortcoming of others, even if the others as you mentioned are generally viewed as the successful majority, such as "white" rockers" or "indians" or whoever holds popular clout in your book, who wrongfully succumb to the ways of epicurean decadence, do not an any way justify neglecting the better sense that we as people are born with to be the next "hot" one to follow the blind into a pit of steady descent and destruction for the sake of keeping up with the joneses so to speak.
Real hip hoppers are married to it and we take her back home to meet our parents for better or for worse because intrinsically, if it is hip hop versus rap, it is justified of itself by virtue of it's already proven potential, which is wisdom, for educating and benevolence on a street level even.
One who is well versed in the fine art of hip hop listening, familiar with the history of it, it's adaptive evolution and it's direction, would know that the true quality of an emcee lies underneath all of the new-fandangled "be an instant emcee today apparel". The quality of an emcee may be found, in part, in the connection between their usage of words and the extrapolation of their lyrics' true meaning and motivation.
These aspects of a quality emcee are key to determining whether an emcee is worthy of support and recognition and apt to benefit a multitude of people.
Not to be confused with mere "rappers" who without integrity to the art of emceeing, conveniently pull the wool over the eyes of the new generation hip hoppers, who have never seen or felt the true benevolence of hip hop in action. Into a hole, do unintegrable rappers lead the youth of thw "NOW" era.
The "NOW" generation are spontaneous and impressionable to the Nth degree. As such, they are susceptible to seeing the benefits of vices today and not the repercussions and ramifications vices will have on their lives tomorrow.
Yet through it all, maybe even without the rap, but some meaningful mentally liberating hip hop, a well educated female, keenly nurtured to understand and appreciate her finer points, will be recognized as worth more than the bird in the bush that is the "fast sex, money cars, h*es and drugs" lifestyle that so many rappers, including Jay-Z's song by the same title, falsely promise will bring happiness.
Yet if they were happy, why do they and moviestars as well, for that matter, still commit the crimes that they once blamed on an indigent existence. Now that they have money, there's no need to pimp or trick h*es, hmmph... Vivica Fox practically fell into 50-Cent's lap if you let him tell it, the Game will surely tell it now we bet.
Jay-Z is really hurting on the inside because he said that he won't cry and that he has to make the song do it for him. Crying is liberating and is a way to go from the past hurt to the liberated future without the pain. Welled up tears are pressue and pain and to release them is to release the pain. Even Jay-Z said on that "Best Of Me" song with Mya, "Pain is pleasure and pressure bust pipes and you look like the 'I Like It Rough Type'".
Jay-Z is hurting thats why he hurt and degraded females, mind you "Soon You'll Understand" is the ill liberation climax of the heart that even the iced-tongue Jay-Z has. Mobb Deep spit the truth too on Shook Ones pt.2, "They shook, scared to death scared to look they shook, 'cause ain't no such things as half-way crooks, they scared to death, scared to look they shook".
Bad influences are major. Sure athletes are not to blame for every unfortunate incident that befalls a community, but they are the "stars" and the guiding light by which a few hopeless see their way through a dark hopeless existence through emulating what they see as the formula for success that worked for their idol.
Idol worship is evidently wrong, but Mondez Farrington did well to speak upon what half the people who listen to rap music do not now and what the other half who do not listen to rap music take for granted. Surely the downfall of your idol may be your downfall in more ways than one. That's why hip hop versus rap can and did teach about knowledge of one's self so that each individual can freely cultivate themselves into their own individual self without following another down the wrong path.
The beauty of America is that the inception of what America was and is to be is the realization of that Dream to free and mentally liberated without injury to the life or limb of another, it could happen, and with hip hop with is essentially a growth modification tool that carefully controls the direction of the growing mind and body of individuals. Wow, that is truly wonderfully when one considers the rhythm of it. Its like healthy food that tastes good, like Broccoli. But what if it were used for evil? And that is the point we think mondez farrington was trying to make in their cautionary message.
Look J, the same way you know about the negativity that Europeans, the Japanese and the Indians are capable of, if not very well-known for, you probably also know of their propensity to stereotype. It didn't seem like mondez farrington was advocating the pubic hair jokes albeit jokes mediate truth to certain degrees. Hence Co-MEDy mediates as a forum to discuss sensitive issues that are otherwise incendiary. CoMEDy is a MEDicine to MEDiate the extremes of sins.
Be not angry, for there is a strange yet liberating truth in that joke. Truth in the since that, unless whoever MADE the joke was having sex with a person whose pubic hair fit that description, then how would he or she, or they know about a person's head hairs' relation to their pubic hair, unless the joke makers' pubic also hair fit that description and if so, the joker himself who bears such pubic hair is not so physically different enough to poke fun at a type of blood phenotype that evidently runs through everyones veins including theirs.
The pubic hair joke couldn't strictly be so funny among Caucasians only because if so, then pubic hair texture is universal. See? Hmmm.... Think about it, don't get angry, that's what the designation of that joke was supposed to do and if you fall prey to the anger then the joke was successful.
Picture it like this. If a racial separatist person made that joke, knowing already of the propensity of the stereotype, then why on Earth would they seek to sexually experiment with a person whose phenotypical designation fit the description, they as so different, recognized aforehand?
Maybe there was some satisfaction to be gained and appreciated in the physical company of the person whose pubic hair-texured head hair phenotype connotated that person to be a certified sexual afficionado with satisfied customers, true to the stereotype mind you. That's not so insulting by most peoples' standards. Is it?
The joke never, contrarily, went to the extent to say that the pubic hair-headed one failed to sexually please their partner. Now did it? Alright then. All may now chill. After all, the joker and the butt of the joke, had to have been consensual partners, because "'It Takes 2' to make a thing go right" Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock said. It got too hot in here for a moment.
When one devises such intricate jokes designed to wound you, it only means that they are so passionate about you that they can't get you off of their minds.
Take it as a compliment, Love is Pain, Pain is Pleasure, Pressure busts Pipes, you can only Hate what you once Love, and Apathy hath not Passion enough to Love or Hate, it doesn't care. If you Hate the inventor of that joke, that means you Love them back and there's nothing wrong with that. It is what it is. God is Love. This is Truth. Peace be unto you. Peace be unto you all. We all need some peace. PEACE.

Dem blacky girls is whores fo sho. They likes to be CHAINED when they gettin fucked.
Posted by: Fah Q | June 21, 2005 02:54 PM
The chains are for your benefit, they just like the look of security on your face when you see them bound and chained, its much better than the look of insecurity on your face when they are not bound and chained.
Betcha bite a chip before they vibrate their hips, voluntarily,
she loving you militarily, verily, you use the chains, cause you scared of she,
cause she a G, Oh Deez Ess the freshest, cuties, they be the flyest, the honeyes of our diet,
don't knock it til you try'em, both of you can triumph, you can bump your stump all you want, but her response is the jawnt,
In a fashion, much like the buzz of orgasm, in chains to calm your brain before you fall into the chasm,
He thinks they're all alike, and that's how she knows that she has him, spasming, gasping for precious air, she tricked the john for the doe just to get'em to go there,
whoa there, easy baby, easy baby, first chains on her body, then his keys on a chain to the Mercedes,
These ladies are awesome, no matter how much you toss'em, their orgasms are infinite to your one, so who's the boss son, but they got more to come, so, who has the upper?,
The dude that chained her and hid behind a rubber, or the other,
Female lover, sister of the brother the dame in chains, or the scared man that used the bands, to chain the dame-sel, to perpetrate distress, but the mind is infinite,
Children born from worn Trojan wearers too swift in it,
poke with force through the rubber 'til pressure bust pipes,
cause you look like, give it to her rough type,
She ride the hype, regardless of the disrespect, you dog her out, but she swallows you to the neck,
They know what you like, game recognize game, checks reflect the needs to match the gain of the aim,
This ain't a story so don't you dare laugh, just another story about another path, respect the chicks, or they'll take it out your a**,
Goodnight, Knock'em out the box yaknow, knock'em out now, "yaknow is really weird",
Knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock'em out the box yaknow, knock'em out yaknow.
Peace be unto to you all. We all need some. PEACE.

A lot of ya'll are the most ig'nat niggas I have ever come across. Seriously, it does not matter what sista girl has on, if she is being professional, then you be professional. No one deserves to be treated like a trick just cause they are trying to do their job. These were not groupies that rode roughshot in the back of the cab, these are sistas that were a supportive part of the game trying to feed themselves and their families and getting shat on by their fellow co-workers. You mean to tell me if your momma came home and broke down in tears crying because she just got off her shift at the rib joint and the owner made yet another hourly comment about what she needs to do with his hot link you would look at her sideways and tell her to chop it up to the game? "Don't bring down the brotha mom, that's what they would do."
We cannot whine about how hip hop gets a bad rap, and why our shows get cancelled ect and then allow these kinds of actions to continue. Your niggaish mentality is what gives credence to those who use to hang us, those that deny us opportunities of leadership. You really thing Rolling Stone Mag would let their staff get buck like this? Let Matt Lauer get outta pocket with Katie Couric. Period point blank, no sista should be disrespected in the office no matter where she works, especially if its for a publication that covers a great segment of our culture!!! Just because Rock artists sometimes do similiar stuff does not mean you do it to! That BS is nothing to copy! If you wanna use them as a role model, then refer to how they keep their publishing, how they usually marry the wife and not the hoe, how they build their name into a brand ect. You all need to put a stop to your niggaesque issues and stand up be black men and support your sistas...

Tricie u goddamn right!! PAMOJA my sista.
Posted by: Odhis | June 27, 2005 01:43 AM
Some interesting things being said here...a lot of nonesense as well.
But what really bugs me the most are the comments from Odhis. Here is a brother that claims to be from Africa yet spouts the N-word all throughout his comments like it's going out of style.
Not to mention that he is about as coherent as someone who is following instructions from a "Hip Hop Slang For Dummies" book or something.
Please, do not follow us ignorant brothers and sisters in North America. We have been subjugated and brainwashed since we were brought here centuries ago from Africa.
Walk the right path and show us how it should really be done. Don't adopt our ignorant ways in an attempt to be "down".
You are from the Motherland. Show us how to be the kings and queens that we were meant to be.

If female journalists dress seductively, they should expect to be perceived as seductive by males particularly artists and should expect they will try to be aggressive with them. Many Black women want to be treated as superprofessional but dress supersexy. For the most part, those two are mutually exclusive. You can dress modestly, professional, and be sexy in a way that is very respectable. If you pants, skirt is tight on your hips, your nice stomach is showing, your cleavage is visible. 95%+ of dudes will not be able to focus on your professionalism only. HOpefully one day, somebody will teach our daughters to dress modestly. Modest isn't nun-like. My school like most of our schools probably had a few girls who stood out for being fresh but not showing their butt and/or thong.
Posted by: DressModest | July 2, 2005 01:25 PM
That is quite true DressModest. Wanting to be perceived professionally drives a lot of women to dress along the lines of their own undoing, literally at times. There is no class bracket to which the phenomena, of women compromising their dress code to be appealing, strictly occurs. Do not forget that oness profession may also be cloaked by their dress code as well.
Sometimes women do not get enough attention from their fathers and incidentally, their mothers are also lacking in attention from, not just any man, but, from men that mean well for the advancement of the women in his life. A lot of times, and it's no secret, women that are fortunate enough to attend colleges and universities are from single parent homes and subconsciously from experience the learn that the key to a man's inner sanctum of security is through his stomach where his desires abound, be it through food or sex as well.
What works it what works from a few females' perspectives and if it's not broke or failing, then many reason, why fix it? The thing about that is that professionals will tell you to make professional behavior a habit to where you are professional by second-nature. If success is found to abound with provocative dress, then dressing subtly seductive will become second-nature. It's the same second-nature mentality required to drive a vehicle that has a manual stick gear-shift where you have to up-shift and down-shift gears constantly and sometimes subconsciuosly.
Once you learn that or anything for that matter it's next to impossible to unlearn. That's why Terry Mcmillan books are so popular like "How Stella Got Her Groove Back". Stella's clinical approach to enjoying life was only effective AFTER she grew settled down, but the honey-moon is supposed to be liver than the bachelor party. The Woman Stella's husband married loss her zest for life after the honey-moon. Stella never LOST her groove, she just either didn't groove as much as she used to or she STOPPED grooving. Stella's groove was always there, she just kept it to herself until somebody else came along to ACT like they wanted the groove that she tucked away.
Everybody doesn't have the same goals specifically, but food, shelter, clothes, money and maybe Love, somewhere along those lines, pervades most peoples' list of things to do, women included. People have their own unique ways of achieving these goals, yet half the fun of it, doing the necessary, is to do it according to one's OWN knack. For some women, from media professionals, to fast-food workers, there's nothing more gratifying than to accomplish the job objective and to get the AND 1 bonus.
That means they are able look good while they make the worthwhile attempt, and then turning the foul (let's just say the business venture or merger propositon fails) into inspiration for other women. Such inspiration usually presents itself via the out-of-pocket personal success story in the form of the dinner invitation from the prospective partner. Afterwards the two of them may be able to discuss modifying the aspects of the previous negotiations. You know, the two of them working on the prospects of there being a PHYSICAL MERGER where they are bound to be more successful in "HITTING IT" off.
Monica Lewinski was successful, to where she got a book deal and who knows when someone will produce the her movie. Monica's success was due to excessive media exposure, not to demean her, but to edify her publicity beyond it's relative obscurity. She was unheard of before then, but soon after, she had to compete for the scandalous title after competitors came out of the woodwork to dethrone her as the aide who provoked the president's passion. Crime doesn't pay, but success sucks. Go figure.
The blame is not on the females for catching on to a successful trend that has it's beginnings in antiquity, since before marriage was appreciatively institutionalized. Rather the father-figures owe it to the women in their lives to remind them of how they are priceless and how invaluable they are.
Women need not chase after diamonds because they are said to be forever. If not for the women that appreciate the diamonds, then the diamonds would have no value at all, mere rocks for ones that MAY or may not live to be about 114 years in some cases. Truly the treasure is the life that comes through the woman's body via the family jewels and the gems unprotected of gemmy hats, to produce and to connect peoples from the past to now to forever.
No, LOVE is forever and is the perfect gift that a man can give a woman and vice-versa. The Creator, the best giver of gifts and whose mercies are infinite, out of Love, saw fit to give the woman to the man, and them to each other as flesh of the same flesh and bone of the same bone.
Truly the men and the women outlive the diamond because diamonds won't bleed for you or share forever with you......Forever ever, forever ever, but the family of men and women ARE forever. Peace and blessings to the families of the world. LOVE IS forever.
Peace be unto you all. We all need some Peace. PEACE.

i am a female hip hop concert promoter from the UK, and trust me, ive seen what goes on on the road, But you have to draw the line and be professional. i know where to draw the line and not to act all up with the stars. Yeah, the artists will always be looking at you in that way, but if you stand firm and act like you are not interested they won't try it. Ive been in many sitruations where i get invited into their rooms and i got to know them quite well as i go on the ro0ad with them, but if you are gonna wear low cut tops and mini skirts, who can blame them for looking????
Posted by: zara corleone | July 6, 2005 11:29 AM
Respect SOHH for putting this article out! This type of stuff has been going on in the biz for awhile! I believe it's just a reflection of men's attitudes towards women. All women deserve respect and honor regardless of there color! A wise man once said "A nation can rise no higher than its woman." If we don't respect them and allow them to be disrespected, then we'll continue to call them out of their names.
Also, remember Goodie Mob's Beautiful Skin--one needs to go back and listen to that! I'm not a brotha who's a member of the Nation of Islam but I respect the bruthas with high regard. Maybe these sistas should hire the FOI to be their security! Then let's see how many men would call them bitches!!! I know they can't be with them every step of the way but I'd like to see...
Peace... 1
