First of all I'm tired of tha media refering to these emcees as "conscious" rappers. I mean is that really a compliment? Like b/c I rap, I'm supposed to be non-conscious muthaphukka.....PLEASE. It's kinda like when Chris Roc made tha joke about people saying Colin Powell speaks so well. He's an educated black man, he's supposed to speak well you dumb muthaphukka. And these are emcees that have lived very vivid messages to tell in their music, so there supposed to be "conscious" you dumb muthaphukka! Matter of factly, I like that term better, the "message" rappers. Let's throw conscious out tha window. And how can you say Talib Kweli, & Mos Def have lost their mojo? That's just silly. Those two cats are some of the only "message" rappers left. And their "messages" are still just as strong as they have been. And no, no, no, it's only a surprise to yo dumb-azz that rappers like Em & Jada are becoming "message" rappers. True hip-hop heads have heard the authentic, pure, raw, storytelling ability of Jada for years. Even back in the L.O.X. & Bad Boy dayz. So again......PLEASE! And Eminem is one of the rawest in tha game right now for dropping jewels in people's minds. Tha media and stupid muthaphukkaz like yourself are the one's who are labeling Eminem as a nuisance to tha youth, and an emcee who makes little kidz shoot themselves & jump off bridges and all that shyte! That's bullshyte!!! Em aint saying nuthin in his rhymes that is more outlandish than any other rapper has said before in tha past. If yo little teenage son goes out and shoots up his basketball coach and all tha players he don't like, then it aint Eminem's fault, it's the parents fault for not whoopin little Johnnie's azz enough when he was little. But anyway, back to tha subject, where wuz I? Oh yes, and "conscious" rap as you call it, has always been about protest you dumb muthaphukka. I don't know your ethnicity, but we as young, grimey, black individuals from these streets, live our life in protest, whether we are a rappers or not. Nuff said about that. Self-reflection is only tha outcome of so much protest. But tha protesting will never turn into solely self-reflection, ya kna? Follow me now. I don't wanna get too "conscious" for you. lol. Now with all that said, let me tell you what you should have wrote about in tha San Francisco Chronicle. Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, Nas, these cats are some of the few hip-hop artists that are keeping hip-hop hip-hop, ya kna? They don't hardly make emcees like these cats anymore. Rapping is an artform, a gift from God, that He designed for only those who are trained with the touch of his hand. He intended for certain people to have tha gift of gab in order to spread his message in many ways. See, God is just a bad mutha, man. He knows that everyone is not going to come to him thru a church or thru a preacher, etc. So he birthed tha earth with lyrical prophets that would in a way, "translate" he's message in ways that where simple to understand. Some people may not necessarily get it when some deacon is tellin them to pray and give your life to God and all that. And whereas these lyrical prophets that are ordained to write ryhmes, might just be tha one to get that message across without being overbearing, ya kna? Ya undastan?? The problem with hip-hop today is these prophets are the ones who are selling the least amount of records. Then you got cats like Nelly, and Chingy, & J-Quan who are going 3&4 times platinum. What's wrong with this picture? The problem is that people who are feeling these "message" rappers, need to start supporting them by going to Sam Goody or their local record store and actually purchasing their cd instead of downloading it or getting the bootleg. This would bring hip-hop back to where it's supposed to be. B/c now you got bytche-azz muthaphukkaz like Nelly making everybody and they daddy think he can be a rapper. It used to be that you had to actually have talent to become a rap superstar, but that's not true anymore. Nelly is proving that. But the problem is that cats like Nelly are setting a trend that is negatively affecting the whole industry, b/c now these A&R's & CEO's are seeing that Nelly's bytche-azz, untalented, stlye of rap is selling millions of copies, so these A&R's & CEO's are encouraging their artists to get more commercial with their lyrics b/c that's what is selling. For instance, look at 50's Massacre album. This is more commercial than I have ever heard 50 sound. Fat Joe's All or Nothing album is more commercial than I have ever heard him sound. Real hip-hop heads know this. But it's up to us real hip-hop heads to show these A&R's & CEO's that true authentic hip-hop can once again sell. To sum it all up, most of the true hip-hop heads are not buying legal copies of their favorite albums. Albums with actual bar codes, ya undastan? Most of the people who are buying Nelly's shyte, & Chingy's shyte, & J-Quan's shyte have probably never even heard a track by Krs-One or Rakim or Kool G. Rap, ya kna? Most of them are 13-19 yr old caucasian teenagers. Nothing against white people, but have you ever heard one of your boyz say, "Man, I can't wait for that new Nelly to come out!!" LOL. My point exactly!! So stop downloading and buying bootlegs man. This is coming from one of those "conscious" message prophets. ThaWizard, peace be unto you for laying the truth out there so honestly. Not to offend any but if the shoe fits then wear it and if the skirt don't fit underneath the jeans, then take it off. There has been self-reflection deep in hip hop way before a Kanye West who by the way is an excellent producer, but if you peep that dude, he's just saying what people want to hear at least half-way rather than really saying what needs to be said. Rappers rap about drug dealing and they are very capable of effectively reflecting upon the straw that broke their backs in a sense of letting the flood waters of self-loathing overwhelm them into to blurrily seeing their way to justifying their perpetuation of a drug epidemic.

Moral decay is what it is whether drug dealer or drug user both have forsaken what they know is right regardless of the law. Even that he who falls short of one part of the law falls short of all of the law. The thing to do is NOT to just rest as Kanye does at stirring self-reflection. The inner conscious of many that wills to do righteousness is the part of people that mirrors the God that saw fit to create us and to have faith in us as we have faith in God.

Let us not let fall short of the contemplation of the right thing to do, for that is our conscious. To do evil requires no conscious, but only the means by which to commit the actus reus or criminal act. Lest one premeditates with mens rea, the criminal mind, then so such a mind that can conceive to thwart that which is right against the grain of right must surely be capable of expediting that which is right, and with ease if not zealously when properly directed with the way that will grant one power earned and due.

The extent of our materialism was to merely own a nice pair of Reeboks and/or Nikes, Adidas, British Knights, Lottos, Diadoras, or Pumas and that was not excessively material since Shoes made the whole outfit and were the rave of the day. Since we weren't really pushing vehicles back then, it was as Leaders Of The New School said, "A Saab Story".

Nowadays cats accessorize harder than chicks, like they are the former Artist Formerly Known As. People CAN do what they want because that's what hip hop was, a form of expression and a voice for people that had no political voice to satisfy how they felt as economically underpriviledged, hence the free shows in the park in the Bronx. Yet as ThaWizard has so profoundly uncovered, its the suburbanite kids be they African American or Caucasian American that have exhausted the level of importance of materialism within hip hop.

Ice doesn't make you a hip hop scholar, it just means you are either stupid to buy platinum chains and Navigator before you buy a house (what are people doing, living in their cars and whips, pissing out the hatch-back iced-out) or you are spending the allowance that Momma and Daddy Dearest gave you so you could look hip in the hood, while you inherit the house, or they buy you one? Hmmm...which is it either way that not conscious or hip hop, that's a wanna-be, wanna be rich too fast = idiot drug dealer, or wanna be 'hoodrich from the suburbs = poor little rich kid.

Conscious hip hop is potent as it is the meaning behind avoiding the temptation of the lustrous vices of this world. Like DMX said on "Slippin'" off of "Flesh Of My Flesh Blood Of My Blood", "to live is to suffer and to survive is to find meaning in the suffering". So many are not surviving but are luring others into the pit that they have fallen into and decorated.

If one fell into Hades also known as hell, would it not be abundant of precious gems and rare stones and metals since those things are found below the Earth's surface. Hades has Platinum and Diamonds and Gold and such to offer for days just so long as there are plenty of people to occupy the caverns. Luxuriously decorated are those caverns yet the occupants are bored of they same old company that do nothing but talk about jewels that so commonly adorn the walls so much they may just puke Diamonds for that matter.

Fresh company is what those in Hades desire yet that company need not bore them or cease to tell tales of the upper realm for then the guests would be of no use to the tenants of Hades. Oh what a pity if the only tales of the upper realm were of Diamonds, Platinum, and precious gems just as there are in Hades. Precious Gems, ha, reminds us of "The Lord Of The Ring", that part where the Gollum was always saying, "The Precious", that's kind of curious, hmmmm...Precious gems...The Precious...hmmmm...?

The conscience and/or ignoring one's conscience would provide a heaven or a hell within each of us. Despite heeding a conscience immediately or later, consciences have a habit of sneaking up on us to warn us of our responsibilities before it is too late, hopefully before we are unconscious. Some people see tha world thru basic cable, & some people see tha world thru high definition satellite, ya kna? It sounds like you and I are getting that HD satellite. :) But anyway, the important thing for people to know is that the problem that exists in hip-hop today is fortunately still in our hands. But we have to get a hold on things before it's too far gone & it is no longer sacred to be a creative street poet. And this, (hip-hop that is), is something that we still do have the power to change if everyone sticks together and shows the work ethic, unlike the presidential elections. We could have 5 million newly registered Black voters, & we still would not have an affect on who was elected to our presidency. Did we not prove that in this past election. All respect due to the people before us that protested & even died for our right to vote, but the truth of the matter is that they were involved in one of the biggest brainwashings that this country has ever put down. And that was making us believe that we actually had an effect on presidential elections. I mean, just think, the Arabs that own that hotel chain down the street are keeping things in the family. They will never just give away the secret of how they became so successful with hotels, b/c then everyone else would be able to take over their customers, right. John Doe, two of his cousins, & his uncle run the City Barber Shop, right. If they showed everyone on tha block how to cut hair, then they would be asking for their own downfall, right. No one would need their business, & other people would start to "take over." The same applies for this government of ours, do you really think they are going to just give away the secrets of how to run this country?? Of course not, b/c then we would not need them anymore, and we would start to, you guessed it, "take over." And they can't have that. So to believe that your vote actually counts is a joke. Your vote is part of ratio, part of a strategic percentage designed to make you believe that it makes a difference. So please, join me in trying to save one of the things that is still OURS, ya kna!!! We can save hip-hop people. And if all these wack emcees, like Nelly & Chingy, etc. are reading this, then please do your part in helping us keep hip-hop sacred by shooting yourselves in tha head, or better yet, hanging yourselves with your platinum chains.!! Conscious Hip Hop is not dead. It may appear so beacuse conscious hip-hop is not played on the radio. Beacuse the radio is controlled by corporations and in general the corporations don't think that the messages in conscious hip-hop are good for business. In addition, the industry is controlled for the most part by homosexuals like Fluff Daddy, escuse me Puff Daddy and Jay Z. But people like Dead Prez, Mos Def, Common, and Nas keep the fire burning. Lets not forget that 2Pac's music lives on. So as long as his music is playing we will have conscious hip-hop. 2Pac made a lot of ocnscious hip hop. He was able to make beautiful music while teaching a powerful message without sounding preechy. He was also notorious for courageously saying what he wanted to say. Remember what he said about Puff Daddy and Jay Z.

Hip Hop needs to open the gates to some new fresh rebellious MC's. JZ and Puff Daddy need to retire with their respective lovers.
