Shareefa: At The Point Of No Return, One on One With DTP's Songstress

shareefa_140x140.jpg

After a long wait and some close calls in life, Disturbing The Peace songstress Shareefa drops her debut album Point of No Return today. The Jersey native who now finds herself living in Atlanta, is in a great position to do big things. It's clear that Shareefa is now one of the most talked about vocalists in the country and her album is getting rave reviews for her gritty style and sultry voice with extended range. The first woman signed to Disturbing the Peace/Def Jam, Reefa was able to get major production assistance from Chucky Thompson (Mary J. Blige), Salaam Remi, Rodney Jerkins and newcomers the Justice League (Butterfly).

I recently had a chance to talk with Shareefa about her debut release, musical influences, and her love for DTP.

SOHH: Yeah we missed you at The Dirty Awards out here this week, so what's good with you?

Shareefa: Shit, what's good with you. I'm just out here in New York making it happen with the music that's all.

SOHH: So now that the album is finally done and ready to drop, tell me what's going to set this record apart from the other so-called "R&B/Hip Hop" females that have preceeded you?

Shareefa: The album is incredible, I was able to have the majority of the input and creative control on the album and I think it shows. I also worked with some fabulous producers on this project too which made it even better.

SOHH: And your sound is so unique, tell me who were some of the artists who influenced you when you were coming up?

Shareefa: Oh man, everybody from Anita Baker to Faith [Evans] has influenced me. I mean Donny Hathaway, Lauryn Hill, Chaka Khan... I could go on and on.

SOHH: Tell me this, has being in Atlanta had an influence on your music?

Shareefa: Oh most definitely, just being around music all the time in Atlanta keeps you on point. The musical atmosphere is just big in Atlanta.

SOHH: Your first single "I Need A Boss" was pretty direct and to the point, but what exactly is your definition of a boss?

Shareefa: Well, a boss is just somebody who goes hard at whatever it is that they do. A boss is a go-getter. You don't have to have a bunch of loot to be a boss. Shit you can be a garbage man, a teacher, or whatever just as long as you go hard at what you do.

SOHH:Your next single "Cry No More" is making noise now, what was the concept behind that track?

Shareefa: Well, "Cry No More" and "I Need A Boss" was all Rodney's idea (producer Rodney Jerkins), he's a genius and I'm just blessed to be working with him for real. But with "Cry No More" we wanted to show a different side of me and show off my vocal skills.

SOHH: What has been the best part about working with Disturbing The Peace?

Shareefa: Working with the whole DTP family has been a blessing. I guess the best part about things is finally being able to shine. Then, also working with Luda, Smoke and Shawn (Field Mob), Bobby Valentino, Shawnna and the rest of the family has been real.

SOHH: Are you and Shawnna pretty close?

Shareefa: Oh yeah, Shawnna that's my girl right there. I mean she holds it down for me and I hold it down for her, it's always been like that.

SOHH: Now that the album is finished, what can we expect from Shareefa next?

Shareefa: You can look for me on The Lyfe Jennings Tour which is coming soon and like I said, I just encourage everybody to go out and pick up the album. And thanks to everybody out there for all of the support.

Note:Shareefa will be in Atlanta on Tuesday, October 31st at The Tabernacle as part of The Lyfe Jennings Tour

The KKK Disbands: Leaves Their Job To Black Folks

The KKK leader stepped to the podium, his hood lowered around his

shoulders and a look of disgust on his face. He said, "Sorry guys

but this will be our last meeting; we're going out of business."

A member stood up in back. "But why sir?"

The leader sighed, "Well, reverend, the niggers are doing a better

job getting rid of themselves than we ever did, so we are no longer

needed."

There were rumblings and protest. The leader raised his hand to

silence the Klan members, and said, "Their rap music says more

vile things about black women than we ever thought of." The

members grudgingly nodded in approval. The Imperial Dragon

continued: " And their women write books and make songs that

demean black men better than my two speech writers ever could,

looking down at two men seated in front who lowered their heads.

"They shoot each other constantly ", he continued;"

And as a group, they spend a huge amounts of money on cars,

liquor, that stuff they call bling bling, and the proliferation of rap

music -- as they talk about all that shit in their magazines -- and

nobody needs us to talk about how a lot of their sorry asses keep

playing the race and victim cards while complaining that other

groups are surpassing them in economic development and

supposedly getting more attention in schools.

Hell, they even support a so-called "Black Hair" DVD that a white

man is making money on , in four sequels at $20.00 a pop, talking

about how Koreans have taken over the "black hair" industry without

acknowledging that Black entrepreneurs had 100 years to get a

monopoly or entrenchment in the industry that Ma dam C.J Waker

founded 100 years ago, but got out-hustled and out-strategized

while spending investment capital elsewhere.

Let's face it, they're being hoisted by their own petards."

Some members went looking for dictionaries, while most members

nodded as it hit them that their job was finished; that blacks

had become their own worst enemy.

The leader shook his head. "It's time to go back to our regular lives

as policemen, judges and congressmen, and leave the business of

getting rid of niggers to niggers. They are just better at it than us."

He then threw his hood on the ground and walked off the stage.

Thus ended the last KKK meeting.

I wish the ones that want to speak on race related topics go elsewhere there is a time and a place for everything. This blog is dedicated to the city of Atlanta and how we have come and taken over the Music industry like Microsoft did the software industry.
