It's Krucial, Big Boi And T.I. Finally Link Up

KingT.jpg
Big Boi and T.I. have officially linked up but not how you probably think. They have partnered up to open up an official Boom Boom Room at T.I.'s Club Krucial on Bankhead (Donald Lee Hollowell to you suburbanites).

If you need to ask what exactly is a "boom boom room"? Then maybe you really don't need to know.

Speaking of Big Boi, he and Dre 3000's single "Mighty O" is one of the hottest songs in the COUNTRY. Album in stores in August and I can't wait for the video on that joint.

Also, if you have yet to peep the new Born Hustler's Inc. "Do It, Do It" video check for it here. If it puts you in the mind of Lil Jon's "Snap Ya Fingers" it's because the production is under that same umbrella with K-Rab leading the way.

Memorial Day In Miami Showcases ATL's Prominence

Yo, I didn't realize how big Yung Joc was in the south. Man, all I heard was "It's Going Down" throughout the whole weekend in Miami. I knew he was killing ATL for a minute but dammit man' that's all I heard. As a matter of fact, all you mainly heard was ATL music. The A is firmly planted.

YungJoc2006Press01.jpg

Memorial Day in Miami is must-see T.V. though, believe me. It was just like any other urban fest though, with big rims and women scattered everywhere so if you've seen one you seen 'em all. And yep, that same midget was down on south beach leanin' and rockin'.

But overall it was on point. Only a couple of murders I hear so that was an improvement (sad but true-it is what it is).Greg Street's car show was serious as expected, Kay Slay might have to watch out because Street's car show is a traveling monster right now. Any ride you wanted to see was there.

But enough of that, I heard 103.3 deejay Ryan Cameron's Diddy Ball was major here in Atlanta over the weekend. I also hear Ryan makes a 1/2 mill in base salary too, damn! I'm in the wrong profession.

ATL's Greg Street Taking Car His Show To Miami

Yes Sirr, Memorial Day weekend is here so let the games begin. Fellas pull out your whips, summer is officially here.

To do the honor of jumpstarting the summer session, ATL's #1 DJ Greg Street will be taking his show down to Miami and hosting The Greg Street World Famous Celebrity Car and Bike Show. It's official.

gstreet.jpg
Click here for the official flier

Keep an eye out for those Greg Street mixtape's too.

Here in ATL we already know what time it is. It's a definite must-see event if you are in south florida this weekend. I know Street has Dem Franchise Boys' Ridin Rims cued up as we speak.

But if you don't make it to Miami, Atlanta has a full lineup of events this weekend from Diddy's party, to Big Boi's bash. The list goes on, do your research.

Real talk though, let's not forget those in hip hop who have lost their lives this year, from J-Dilla to Proof, and Philant Johnson. The list goes on, but remembrance sometimes get's lost in the shuffle of festivities throughout the weekend.

Has Anybody Seen Jody Breeze? We've Found Him

Has anybody seen Jody Breeze?
jodybreeze2.jpg

Well, there has been a sighting...It appears that he's been dropping verses with a group called Tiffany Affair. It's an unlikely collab to say the least but sometimes that's the formula, we'll see...The song is decent though.

tiffanyaffair.jpg
They kind of have that "Spice Girl" look huh...

Their first single, "Start A Fire," which was produced by Stargate, the Norwegian production duo responsible for Ne-Yo's smash hit "So Sick," features Jazze Pha protégé Jody Breeze.

The girls of Tiffany Affair -- Bianca, Ayanna, Natasha, and Gabrielle -- are each accomplished singers and dancers. The group is currently in New York City, working with JerZ & Clay (Notorious B.I.G., Diddy), and KayGee (Jaheim) on material for their debut album (tentatively titled, Flavors).

Meanwhile, we're still waiting on Jody Breeze's solo joint from Jazzy. He killed the mixtape scene for a minute but then faded. This time last year Boyz N' Da Hood was strong so I'm thinking that they're right around the corner from dropping again, and it should be nice with the addition of Lil' Weezy Baby.

Real talk though, he's in the lab as we speak working on his debut album, Day in the Life of Jody Breeze, which is slated for July.

Bobby Brown Throws Bash For Pops: Diddy Announces Memorial Day Bash

bobbybrown_01.jpg
Bobby Brown and sister Tina Brown (the Whitney snitch) celebrated their father Pops' birthday at Club Insomnia recently. The night was part of a live taping for a future episode of the Being Bobby Brown show which is hanging in the balance as to whether it will be back this year.

Bobby's sister Tina is the lady who sold Whitney out to the National Enquirer a few moths back.

Whitney wasn't in the building, I'm hearing that her reluctance to participate in show tapings has led Bravo to consider dropping the show, supporting the rumors that the producers are currently looking for another network. All of this on the heels of New Edition's concert at Chastain Park last weekend. Bobby's got one speed, "full throttle" and I love that about him.

Also Diddy officially announced that he'll be throwing a Memorial Day Bash this weekend at the club "We Love To Hate", Club Vision. Not my favorite spot but hey it's a Diddy event and you can't go wrong with that.

I'll announce everyhting that's poppin off later this week, I'm still awaiting confirmation on a couple of events. I'll be in Miami this weekend so somebody fill me in on how it was next week.

Yo Gotti Gets Back To Basics

050912_yogotti.jpg
Next up to bat to carry the Memphis torch will be M-Town's own Yo Gotti. He drops his second TVT
Records
release Back 2 Da Basics, with several guest appearances from Lil Wayne, Baby, La Chat, Jazze Pha, Bun B & 8 Ball.

Even if you don't grab the album, make sure you get ahold of "Gangsta Party" featuring 8Ball & MJG and
Bun B. Another song that's a must-listen is "I Got 'Em" with Lil Wayne & Baby.

Also, It's good to see that TVT has reconciled with Lil Jon paving way for his new album Crunk Rock, which is back on schedule for release this year. Also, look for TVT to drop Pitbull's El Mariel and Da Muzicianz will be dropping their self-titled debut soon too.

CRUNK AIN'T DEAD!!!!

JD's Confirms He's Doing Janet This Fall: Oprah Fires Back On Luda

Jermaine "JD" Dupri and legendary hitmakers Jimmy "Jam" & Terry Lewis have confirmed that they will be releasing Janet Jackson's, tentatively titled "20 Years Old." album, in the Fall.

We know JD will do platinum music every year and this is probably where he'll be grabbing grammy's from. Big ups to the most versatile producer in the game.

luda.jpg
Also, remember when Ludacris fired on Oprah after his appearance on her talk show, well Oprah recently got back with him on his comments. Check out Oprah...

There are some people you just don't wanna get on your bad side and the richest black woman in the world might be one of them, but you know Luda don't reallly give a isshh.

Prior to Luda, Only three rappers have ever appeared on the Oprah show. Kanye West to discuss his car accident, Puff and LL Cool J, and then himself as part of the cast of Crash.

T.I.'s "Why You Wanna" Video

ti_image.jpg

"Why You Wanna"- Song
"Why You Wanna"- Video

On the same day T.I. released his record selling album King, I spoke about the probable release of "Why You Wanna" as the second cut from the album. It was a no-brainer. The song is as catchy as a patch of poison ivy on ya' skin, as soon as you hear it.

I know he paid a mint for the Crystal Waters sample alone, and it was a damn good choice. He didn't change much but it still knocks.

I'm glad T.I was able to begin shooting before the run of recent situations that he's had to endure, it was evident that his focus was still intact. With the dedication at the end of the video to the late Philant Johnson, many have now been able to put a face with the name. A damn good look Tip.

As far as the Chris Robinson directed video is concerned, the video simply adds to the song's thump as most do. If you have yet to see it, I'll reserve my judgement for a minute so you can watch it....

I think we'll all agree on this however, the King chose a solid dime for a video vixen this time. Who is that? Ol' girl is the truth, did you see her get out of the beach water?

T.I. even does his little goofy side to side dance when he's on stage. Where ya'boy got that jook from I don't know but...He definitely geeks for a minute. The hook is serious though, and the video does a god job of clinging to the plot of the hook. All of these factors make for key ingredients of another future Top 10 video.

"Life is like a chess game, you need to make your next move your best move"--T.I.

Shawty Lo Of D4L Declares That He's "Da Man"

As D4L's Shawty Lo drills us with the chant I'm the man/ I, I I'm da' man...Got no wife but the white be my girlfriend, from their current single "I'm Da Man", I can just see the clubs consistently crunk off this joint.

d4l.jpg

The third single off of D4L's self-titled album is major in the clubs, not to mention in the streets. As simple as the hook might be (and you can interpret it how you want) the lyrics are nice. In typical Bankhead swagger, Shawty does his thing.

The good thing about D4L is that they allow each artist to branch into their own realm with no envy involved. Fabo is doing his thing, Shawty is all over the town with "I'm Da Man", and Mook is doing business as usual. All key ingredients of a winning formula.

Also, Ice Cube's in town tonight at Earthlink Live for his pre-promotion tour of the Laugh Now Cry Later album that drops on June 6. You gotta be in the building for that.

May 17, 2006

Ice Cube's Performing But Does The City Care?

Shhhhh....Be very, very quiet! Arguably the most influential and prolific rapper still alive will be descending on Atlanta tomorrow and nobody's talking about it. Who am I speaking about? Ice Cube, of course.

cube.jpg
The Don Mega will be performing at Earthlink Live tomorrow night, May 18th and at last check there were still tickets available. How? Earthlink is not a big spot. He should have sold out in a matter of days, and had he been anywhere west of the Mississippi, he probably would have.

I question when I hear little if any promo or pub for a Cube show on the radio outlets. And why has Cube rarely got any spins on the radio here? A common argument is the South won't be receptive to other types of music. Well, we'll never know if they don't play the music.

Other regions play our music faithfully - why can't we do the same here? Some of us don't want to snap our fingers all the time. Face it - E-40 wouldn't have seen an ATL spin if he wasn't joined at the hip with Lil Jon. I guess this is why I spend so much money on CD's.

This is no knock on the DJ's (we got the cream of the crop here on that tip), but more so the radio programmers.

Anyway, I'm done complaining, folk. If you can get there, be in the building for the show tomorrow. And pick up Laugh Now, Cry Later dropping on June 6.

ATL Writer Calls Out The Narcisistic Celebs

There was an interesting opinion column in the Atlanta Journal Constitution on the hip hop community and it's fascination with jewelry and wealth.

The author states, "Many others in this black celebrity clan are completely immersed in vacuous consumption and narcissism. Where is our Muhammad Ali?" and "our current crop of celebrities are in the spirit of Narcissus, for the betterment of themselves and their principles are only incidental to that core identity."

This is an unfair comparison any way you look at it. There will probably never be another with the heart to stand against the system like Ali-but it's unfair to blame our current mindstate on hip hop and "bling" as so many do.

I do see where the writer's headed and I feel 'em, but don't blame everything on hip hop-that's the easy way out. Why point the finger at what's most visible? That's too easy, search for the real root of our problems then we can talk.

sammy.jpg
But the overall point has validity but to associate this line of thinking with hip hop is bogus. Little Richard, Johny "Guitar"Watson, Eddie Levert, Don King, Sammy Davis Jr., Liberace, Dolemite etc.. the last time I checked all those cats were jewelry down...way before hip hop.

UGK Finally Returns To Atlanta

ugk.jpg

This weekend UGK had Atlanta on serious alert, they had the city feeling like baby Port Arthur after their ATL Live performance. Respect Due.

It was good to see C and Bun back together doing their thing. They dug way back into the crates, dropping some old "Riding Dirty", and a "Pocket Full of Stones".

UGK=Classic music however you look at it.

If you get a chance, read Pimp C's interview of T.I. in the May issue of Ozone Magazine. It's an interesting read.

bo.jpg

Also, I've heard a few cuts from BME's Bo Hagen and everything I've heard is crazy. He's been in the BME fold since '98 but word is he's expected to drop his debut album this year around September. If you haven't heard Wuz Up, it's still banging out the club's here so check for that.

Ever Wanted To Know The "Real" Definition of Snap Music?

I think people have too much time on their hands sometimes. Exhibit A - not only is there an urban dictionary for the common man, but they have also come up with a definition for so-called "snap music".

fabo.jpg

Snap Music

1. A style of music originating in the Dirty South. Unlike Crunk music, Snap music has a slower tempo but still talks about clubbin' and strippers (what about bubble gum and candy tho'). It is characterized by the finger snap effect in place of the snare drum. Different people may be able to take credit for originating this style from Fabo, D4L, & Dem Franchise Boys. (Fabo was a member of D4L the last time I checked and since when did he start producing beats)

2. A type of music that is very easy to snap your fingers to, hence its name. its made from simple beats and originated in atlanta, georgia. there is a specific step that people often do, along with the snapping. a good example of snap music would be the song "Laffy Taffy" by D4L.

[Getdafuggouttaherr!]

For the record, I don't call it snap music. I think it's all hip hop and just one of it's many facets. And let's be real, the only people who really call it snap music are those outside of Atlanta.

I interviewed BME's Born Hustlers Inc. the other day and they had the perfect definition of snap music. My manz was like:

"You can call it what you want but I call it snap music because if you get out of place I might "snap" on yo' azz".
Now what!

But anyway, if you ever come to the "hood" and need help politic'n (I assume you must not be "street" proficient if you need to thumb through an urban dictionary for proper dialect) there is a resource out there for the inner-ghetto in you. See the urban dictionary.

Oh yeah, and Happy Mother's Day to all the mother's, mommi's, and baby mama's and baby's mama's mama's... One.

PS. Baby Mama- 1. One who's baby daddy has dipped {noun}

Dem Franchise Boyz Put On Their Screw Face

Dem Franchize Boyz are following the recent trends and have released a chopped and screwed version of their "On Top Of Our Game" album. The original album had major success, so why should we expect less from this version?

dfb.jpg

So, be on the lookout for their remixed album "On Top of Our Game: Screwed and Chopped", reworked by DJ Micheal Watts and in stores now.

Also check out their new single "Ridin' Rims"

You can catch Parlae on a bunch of hot joints right now. He told me he was a hard worker in the studio, once dropping eight tracks in one day, so his buzz is no surprise.

T.I. - We'll Understand If You Scratch The Tour. Citty Got Them "Cookies" For Ya'

T.I. has not resumed his tour yet, as some have reported that he would. How do I know? I saw him out and about yesterday in the town and it's hard to be in two places at one time.

He was scheduled to hit New Orleans but the Big Easy can wait. He should take as much time off as possible, put everything in perspective then jump back in it. Time heals all wounds. T.I. Just get ya' mind right. Believe it, shawty. We'll understand.

OK, enough with my Dr. Phil roll jo'.

But yo, make sure you check for these cats on the rise. Check the record, I told you about Yung Joc a while back--my track record is impeccable (I guess that's how you spell it--let me call Iron Mike and see). Naw, I'm just talking ishhh.

But make sure you get up on Albany/Atlanta's own Citty. His single "Cookie Man" is doing damage in the streets right now and now the press is following. It's another song about hustlin' but really with the economy in the state that it's in, what do we have left.

citty.jpg
I remember seeing Citty and his manz perform at an open mic session here in the city and he killed it. He's under the mentorship of Field Mob and under the wing of Rick Ross so he should be in good hands, check for him soon. He recently made his acting debut in the movie ATL too.

Also, if you haven't got up on your Bigga Rankin mixtape game, please do so. He's flooding the streets of GA and FL with pure heat. Plus he's from my honorary hometown, Duuuuuuuuval! Check for him. If you in the A, he recently got a club night here, so be on the lookout.

Jagged Edge Hopes Fifth Album Will Be The Charm

It's a big album release day for the city of Atlanta.

je.jpg
ATL's own Jagged Edge drops their fifth album Jagged Edge today, strictly for the grown and sexy. The self titled album has ushered in big time reviews already so hopefully the "experts" are right on the money this time.

Their first single "Good Luck Charm" was successful and the next single off the album, "Stunna" is a nice club joint with some added help from Jermaine Dupri. That should be another hit, in the song they mainly talk about throwing your stunna shades on wherever you are or right after you finished drinking or smoking whatever (in a nutshell).

Also, Rasheeda drops her first album as a member of the Big Cat Records family. Her single "Bend Over" is knockin in the clubs right now so it should interesting to see how her album does. She's dropping it independently with no major so get out and support "The Georgia Peach" and her solo effort. The girl has skills, plus like the old folk' say "she's real easy on the eyes".

Rick Ross and Martial Law Holding It Down For The Sunshine State

We all know how big the southern movement is right now but sometimes lost in the ATL/Houston/Memphis shuffle are our neighbors from the south, them Florida boyz. Of course Trick Daddy is still running with the banner, but after spending some time in the sunshine state, the game is something crazy right now.

rross.jpg
Of course Carol City's Rick Ross is holding Dade County down real big right now with his single " Hustlin" and has the 305 on serious lock right now. Ross' reported fued with T.I. after Tip dropped the Just Blaze-produced "I'm Talking To You", has fizzled out after rumors spread that the song was aimed at Ross. T.I. denied the beef and now Rick Ross is up on the "What You Know" remix. T.I. is already slated to be on Ross's upcoming album "Port Of Miami".

This is a good thing, because Rick would have given T.I a serious run for his money. Check him out on some of his mixtapes the boy is crazy-that's why Def Jam lifted him.

star.jpg
Just as Rick Ross is holding down Dade, Broward County is being held down by that Martial Law Klic. I'm telling you, all I heard was their single "Exposed" coming out the chevy's sittin' on 28's wherever I went. I anticipate them being the next to step into the Florida limelight.

I'll post my full interview with them later but check out these quotes from their CEO...
"Martial Law is what the government declares when they have to restore order in society. When I came in to the industry all I could see was chaos. Too many fly by night MC's saturating the industry and I couldn't believe that people where rushing out to the store to buy this so called "Hip Hop".

"We plan to restore order and set the new standard for a hip hop game that's in serious need. We bring what the game needs right now, order. We have the best producers and artists that South Florida has to offer and the music speaks for itself."

Lil Jon's: "Snap Ya Fingaz" Video

644229_liljon_200x200.jpg
You gotta love Lil Jon's latest creation, the "Snap yo Fingaz" video. Once again, as with most video's that come out from ATL, the rest of the world will get a caption of a song that we've been vibing to for about a year now. But it's all good - err'body needs to come on in.

I like the video because it has captured the so-called "snap" music era in it's rawest form, especially with the dancing, because that's what the clubs look like in ATL. We've taken it a little bit further than leaning and rocking. I don't dance myself, but I feel 'em.

A not so bold prediction: this video will be #1 on 106 & Park by the end of the week, or by the end of next week at the latest.

Check for these BME singles as we speak...

Bow Wow On Tour Again?

bow.jpg

Bow Wow is back touring again? His Wanted tour kicked off last week in Michigan, but didn't he just get off The Scream Tour not too long ago? Little Shad Moss is at it hard, but he's young so he can do that.

I understand you gotta get that money and I can't knock you for it. But I know that concert money is good, especially when you can sell out arena's. But dammit man' take a break for a minute and drop some mixtapes or brush up on them lyrics. Or you can even get with JD and tell him what you want him to write for you

There is one plus - Young Dro will join in on a few of the tour dates . It was also announced that BlakJak and Tango Redd have been tapped to join the tour. Also on the tour are B5, Ray J, T-Pain and Lloyd.

BlakJak's first single "Ride and Swerve" featuring Project Pat was the lick when it came out I have to admit.

The bad thing about the tour is that none of the people on tour, other than Bow Wow, have more than a couple good tracks under their belt. We'll see how it goes though. He basically has five opening acts so he made sure he's getting the shine this time around, with no Omarion to share the spotlight with.

MC's Offer Support For T.I.: Outkast's "Idlewood" Album Dropping In September

otkast.jpg

First, big up to Greg Street for bringing together a few artists yesterday to discuss the T.I. situation and the recent flare ups of violence in the rap world. Coincidentally, Busta Rhymes was in studio and had some things to say although he didn't touch on his situation too much. But it was a good look though.

Also commenting with some heavy words was Killer Mike, who stated that after yesterday's murder of his best friend and personal assistant Philant Johnson, "T.I. will never be the same person."

Speaking of Greg Street, good looking out for dropping that new Outkast joint this week. So just incase you forgot, Dre and Big still have this ATL game on lock. No need for dances, finger-snapping...none of that.

From the sound of their first single we can look for Andre 3000 to get back to simply spitting again. And Big Boi, he spits a crazy 32 bars or so, they only run one verse each but they are killin' it. Real talk.

They use the old Cab Calloway hook, "Heidi-Heidi Hi/Heidi-Heidi-Ho" (I don't know how to spell it but you feel me) with a little altering of the hook a little bit for the "Idlewood" title. The album drops in September, just in time to gain momentum by early 2007 and grab more Grammy's. Timing is err'thing you know that.

And we out''''

T.I. and Grand Hustle Involved In Ohio Shootout

KingT.jpg

The plan was to write about something else today, but after getting word late last night about the shootout involving T.I. on Interstate-75 in Ohio after leaving Club Ritz, I'm kind of throw'd right now. He was there after doing a show at Club Bogarts (leave the club shows alone pimpin).

I tried to contact one of my people from Grand Hustle but I've been unable to reach him so I really don't want to comment on the unknown. I'm sure the sketchy details will become clear soon.

All we have to go on is that four people have been shot during the highway shootout, one is reported to be fatal and that's the only thing that seems to be official.

One thing is certain, this rap game is way bigger than entertainment. As I commented earlier with the Jeezy mishap in Florida, people in other cities sometimes have animosity just because no matter where you from. That's always been the case in hip hop, there will always be that Prime Meridian (Invisible) divide between us. Why? I can't call it but it exists.

Hip Hop community, we're at war with ourselves...again. Imagine what "they" think when they read about Proof's situation and T.I.'s shootout in Ohio?..Anyway, we'll wait and see what the word is but til' then I'll send one up for every party involved.

Yeah Southern...You heard it here first.

Also, R.I.P. to Big Hawk down in Texas.

Props To Bone Crusher For Being The Next Celeb To Get Fit

bncr.jpg

I have to send a shot out to Bone Crusher for taking a page out of Bizarre Royale's book by accepting a spot on Celebrity Fit Club for the upcoming season. It's good to see him about to seriously hit the scales.

We've seen too many cats fall a victim to being overweight over the years, with the end result being death in some cases. From The Fatboys to Big Pun, we've seen the FAT monster topple many a giant in our lifetime. Sad but true, but by this time if B.I.G had still been alive he would have had to tackle his own weight issue at some point.

The issue of eating healthy and overall physical wellness is something that artists in the game rarely touch on but it is definitely an issue of serious importance. I've heard a few cats like Dead Prez touch on the issue with songs like "Be Healthy" and KRS touched on it a couple times. So big up to him. I know there are a few other MC's that did too but even more need to.

I'm sure that just as I'm writing this blog there will be a bunch of cats talking about who cares? But that's sheer ignorance, we have have a nation of people crippled and dying because of bad eating habits.

I've stood next to Bone Crusher several times and believe it or not, I've seen cats alot bigger than him, no doubt. But regardless, major props go out to Bone and Bizarre for attempting to get that weight down and possibly send a message out to others that good health is a serious issue.

Juvenile Set To Crank Up The Tour Bus Next Week

juve.jpg

Juvenile recently announced his tour dates for The Reality Check concert tour. It's tricky because Juve' will be joined by Bubba Sparxxx , Dem Franchise Boyz and Lil Webbie on different dates but not on them all. I don't see ATL on the list yet, but I know it's coming. There's no way he's dropping in on Topeka, KS and Denver, CO and not da' "A", so stay posted.

But, before Juve' dips out, I hope drops another release off the album, preferrably that
"Loose Booty" featuring Eightball and Skip.

Juve' Tour Dates:
May 8: Anaheim, CA House of Blues (w/ Bubba Sparxxx)
May 9: San Francisco Fillmore Auditorium (w/ Bubba Sparxxx)
May 13: Topeka, KS Kansas Expocentre (w/ Franchise Boyz and Webbie)
May 14: Hollywood, CA House of Blues
May 16: Denver, CO Fillmore Auditorium
May 18: Chicago House of Blues (w/ Bubba Sparxxx)
June 3: Kansas City, MO Starlight Theatre

Also, major props due to everybody involved with the ATL Hip Hop Film Festival. It was definitely a positive movement. I tried, but I couldn't even keep up with all of the screenings and events that were poppin' off.

I can see this being a major event in Atlanta within the next few years. They even took it way back, old school block party style (of course you know Atlanta wasn't ready for all that though).

In case you missed the featured Dead Prez screening, It's Bigger Than Hip Hop you can check for the world premiere on Starz in Black on June 9th at 10PM EST.
