That is yet another misconception, girlfriend, black people are NOT the poorest in America if you check the statistics. first off, it's very interesting to hear so many different opinions on this issue. you have to admit though, as much as oprah has done for african-americans, her show is still geared toward middle-aged suburban white women, whom like to use it as a way to show how "cultured" they are. when in all actuality, oprah does not represent the average african-american woman.

she is very old school in her thinking and is obviously an african-american whom feels threatened and insulted by the majority of hip hop artists, i.e. luda. an additional reason that she edited luda's comments was because he would have been a turn off to her superiors and the majority of her fanbase(can't lose money).

I watched the show the first time around. And you can't tell what may have been cut out, from one segment to the next.

Having said that, the show is ONLY an hour long(45min minus the commercials), so some of it is going to be edited/cut.

If Oprah really had a problem, she would have been a whole lot harder on Luda and Don Cheadle than she was.

And for things to change for the better, there has to be a mutual sense of understanding, acceptance, and respect between two parties (i.e. Blacks & Whites). Like if the poor black kids want the white police to stop fuckin' with them, they'll need to stop with the guns & drugs...then simultaneously, the police need to stop with all the generalizations/stereotypes and disrespect.

One of our society's biggest problems today is the fact that we think any actions, no matter how contemptible, can be justified by saying "I'm just trying to make ends meet", or "It puts food on the table doesn't it?". Be it slanging, boosting, robbing, hitting, whatever, we always say our reason is so that we can get by. But is this really our reason? Or is it our excuse? No matter who you are, no matter what the circumstances, if you feel that your only option is illegal, then I condemn you. I condemn you, not only as a criminal, but as a detriment to black America as a whole. And I'm not speaking as one without experience, so no-one need patronize me as one.

Because of the images we see in the media, we have all of a sudden begun to believe that such a lifestyle is acceptible. When "gangsta" becomes part of the national vocabulary as an adjective with positive connotation, we should realize that we have been brainwashed.

Who is to blame for this mess? BET, MTV, the Disney Channel, "gangsta" rap, XXL, the Source, VIBE, high-school dropouts, the list goes on, but these are the major players.
BET and MTV are guilty of capitalizing off of the African-American man, and brainwashing him into believing that because he sees this lifestyle in the music videos and on the reality shows, that it must be true. Everyday we see many of the quintessential ignorant black population on network television constantly acting as dumb as humanly possible, and we come to believe that we truly ARE those idiots on tv. The very same applies to the Disney Channel, whose shows are completely unrealistic, acting as though there are no problems between people of different race. Well guess what, come middle school, there's a hell of a culture shock when the (mostly white) kids who watched these shows see that all the black people group together, as do the Asians, Latinos, etc. It's mostly the way that Disney, a notoriously white organization, subtly siphons the Hip Hop culture into its programs that bothers me. The other day I heard a little white girl, who was obviously upper-class, say "Oh snap homie", I felt like slapping her, I honestly did. But that's a perfect example of the self-control that I'm actually not preaching about right now... Nevermind.

One time I heard one of my friends talk about an episode of the "Proud Family", in which a black character on the show was playing baseball, when her base coach told her to steal 2nd. She promptly picked up 2nd base and ran off with it. It's not what happened in the show that bothered me, though, it's what my friend said after that, "Now you know that girl's black!". Why do we allow ourselves to believe that our brothers and sisters are truly like what we see in the media?

I mention our Hip Hop magazines because A)they could use their position to better our communities, and be truly informative about what's really going on; and B)they are such babies when it comes to criticism, instead of keeping an open ear and actually listen to what people think, they just swallow the kids of those who swallow theirs, and say "fuck you haters" to those who don't. I realize that "Hip Hop magazine" entails subject matter relating purely to Hip Hop, but the fact that so many black people who don't watch/read the news read these magazines, it would be hoped that those people, who claim to truly care about the Hip Hop society, would perhaps use these venues to help spread awareness about what's going on.

Before we can expect change to happen, we must first come to grips with what the sources of our problems are. Much as I hate to say it, Hip Hop has become a major contributing factor in the corruption of today's black youth. I don't know what it's like in other parts of the country, but where I live many young black men, who were fully capable of becoming doctors, lawyers, etc., merely drop out of high school with the intentions of making it in the rap business. None of them have, and I'll tell you straight up, none of them will -- I've heard them try to flow, it's not pretty.

This next part's to everyone:

Hip Hop fans, when someone criticizes a Hip Hop icon, don't immediately jump down their throat and accuse them of being anti-black or anti-Hip Hop, try to look at it from their view point, you never know, they may be right. Now I like Luda alot, I personally believe that he is pretty much the most talented lyricist from the south -- once again, I know what I'm talking about, DON'T PATRONIZE ME! Luda's heart is in the right place, but unfortunately, he only speaks about what he believes in, he doesn't stand up for it. "Pimpin All Over the World" was the right kind of idea, but the absolutely wrong message.

Now, about Oprah. Oprah is a black leader in society, but not a civil rights leader. Oprah had a harsher life growing up than half of the black America criticizing her. People are calling her an "Uncle Tom" because she doesn't show a whole lot of love for the rappers and degenerates who corrupt our youth. Anyone who is a follower of Malcolm X could tell you that, were he alive today, it would disgust him to see what we define as Hip Hop today. He would condemn affirmative action; condemn our medicare system; condemn our flimsy social structure; condemn the images and programs that portray violence, drugs, and gratuitous indiscriminate sexual behavior in a regular light; and above all, he would condemn the messages that are conveyed through Hip Hop as a whole. He is without a doubt the least "Uncle Tom"-ish brother to ever grace the corrupt nation known as America with his presence. Malcolm X taught that before we can hope to integrate into society with all other races, we must first unite amongst ourselves and solve our problems. Our problems are our own, and it is up to us to solve them. If we keep blaming our troubles on everyone else, then we are no better than the Bush Administration and FEMA.

I hate to say this... god, you have no idea how much I hate to say this, but in a way, Ackerman's last post was kinda right. For the wrong reasons, of course. This is 100% Dj Nahlege, not someone posting as him, if you need confirmation, I'd be glad to supply it.

Let's clarify, though, I mean he was quasi-right about what he said in the second paragraph, that's all. He is, however, way off about Bill O'Reilly. While I am on Oprah's side here, I do think everybody's being a little harsh on Luda. It is unfair to call him an Uncle Tom, for he does not with evil intent say what he says. Luda is not an Uncle Tom, he is merely unaware of the effect that everything he does has on those who follow him. He has the wrong way of thinking, but it isn't his fault, in this America we live in, there's so many different opinions and so many supporters of each, that it's hard to figure out how to believe.

Ludacris is a very smart man, you cannot argue with that. And I think that he could really begin to make a difference if he would step away from this herd mentality and start thinking for himself. That's what I did.

I realized that I was just following what was popular at the moment, and I stepped away from trying to be like everyone else, trying to be accepted as something that I wasn't. After that it began to dawn on me what was really going on. This transformed me, someone who had just been that kind of follower, into what I am now, a proudly introspective and educated young man trying to make a difference.

P.S. - Yes, E.R., I really am only 16 -I was just lucky enough to become enlightened at a younger age to what I was doing wrong. I say enlightened, I would liken it to Neo waking up from The Matrix, that kind of thing.

What I was saying when I stated that "only the smartest will make it out" was that there are people who are destined from birth to be great, who are smart, who can sing, or can play a sport. These people can make it. The point is that if you are a regular person, with no discernable skills or remarkable talent, you'll have an extremely hard time just trying to get by. Whereas a white person with a similar set of circumstances can still find a niche through societal norms that are more understanding of white shortcomings- i.e. Most people agree that Colin Powell or Condeleeza Rice would make better decisions that George W. Bush, but who's the president?
