SoSo Def's Daz Gets More Props Than His Boss

dazdillinger_150x200.jpg
I happened to catch an article a couple of weeks ago that rated Daz as one of the top five producers in the game. Noticeably absent on the list was the self-proclaimed most underrated man in the game, his boss Mr. Jermaine Dupri.

JD is seriously underrated (Hashim, do you hear me?). If Missy Elliot is gettin' more props behind the boards than JD then the game and the list is doo-doo. All of this just shows how Southern producers get no respect. I won't even begin to mention some of the lesser-known producers carrying the southern throne like Michael Watts, DJ. Toomp, etc.

I do however have a few questions for this list's creator...did we forget about Mr. Storch, Organized Noise, Jazzy Pha or Lil Jon on the list? Where did Missy's nomination come from? And how long will Dre live off of yesterday's merits. Although he is the still the best until somebody takes the crown, good doctor- you are wanted in the studio, immediately!

But major props to Daz. He's earned every bit of the props he's getting, he's one of the hardest working producers in the game. His sound is clear and distinctive which is key in terms of production. Overall, the list is garbage but it's all an opinion. What do ya'll think?

The good doctor isnt living off of yesterday's merit. Mobb Deep (Outta control) 50's album, em's album, anybody ever heard of stat quo..very underrated, (sounds like no other) but dre has made some bangers for him, the game, he hasnt done much, but he makes sure you remember him. As for JD, he been doing his thing! Besides the IRS problems ( you cant hate, he just didnt file) Everyone one you can think of having a hit he has been behind it. What has missy produced lately?

"And how long will Dre live off of yesterday's merits. Good doctor- you are wanted in the studio, immediately!"

Uhh are you a moron like everyone else who works for this site? Dr. Dre executive produced The Documentary and The Massacre, 2 of the 3 biggest albums of the year and also helped revive Mobb Deep's mainstream appeal with 'Outta Control Remix'

IMMA TELL YOU! JD IS THE HOTTEST PRODUCER OF OUR TIME! EVERYTHING HE MAKES IS HOTT. THE CAT IS ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC! MUSIC AS WHAT IS STANDS FOR MAKIN YA MOVE AND SPITTIN HOTT SHYT! IF I HAD ANDYONE IN THE WORLD TO PICK AS A PRODUCER, HANDS DOWN I WOULD HAVE TO GO WITH JD. IM WEST COATS FROM LA, BUT I HAVE BEEN FEELIN JD BROM BACK IN THE DAY! JD, YA MAN THAT NICCA IS FIRE!!!!! ALL OF HIS ARTIST HAVE BEEN SUCESSFUL, OMG THE NIG IS HOTT..... OOOH YEA LIKE THAT RECORD WITH THAT CAT THAT HANGS WITH NELLY, WHAT THE HOOK GOIN BE, COME ON MAN U CANT BE SERIOUS! I CANT BELEIVE JD WASNT IN THE TOP 3! HE GOT THEM ALL BEAT! HIM AND JAZZY NECK AND NECK, BUT JD STILL GOTTEM!

Posted by: PIERRE at January 11, 2006 11:59 AM

I can't stand Jermaine, but he has to crack the top 5. I don't even know what Daz has produced recently. I know he is a great producer.

As for the Dre "living off yesterday's merits" comment, no website that advertises itself as hip-hop would write that nonsense. The only person 2 producers I put at Dre's level are Timbo and Premier.

Posted by: manifest at January 11, 2006 12:14 PM

Executive Producer only means you put the money behind the project homey!

Posted by: CTS at January 11, 2006 12:16 PM

Anybody in Cali knows Dre aint in the studio workin. He's puttin money behind his projects and das it' You cats need to get an understanding of the game. Dre is still number one but he does need to put out some new material just like Timbaland.

Posted by: JMJ at January 11, 2006 12:24 PM

who is daz?

Posted by: Cav at January 11, 2006 12:51 PM

What about 9th Wonder? Premier? They forget about two of the nasttiest beat makers out there?

No one's snares cut like premier and 9th is just making beautiful music... They need to check themselves hard.

Posted by: SJ at January 11, 2006 12:53 PM

DRE HASN'T DONE ANYTHING IN A WHILE. THE MASSACRE DIDN'T HAVE ANY DRE BEATS. THAT'S PROBABLY WHY THE SHIT WAS GARBAGE. ANYWAY TIMBERLAND HAS THE CROWN UNTIL SOMEONE TAKES IT!!!

Posted by: MAC at January 11, 2006 12:56 PM

I agree with Chevy V. JD hasn't produced any "credible" rappers in a long long time. But there are alot of other producers I would name before Daz. Don't get me wrong he has some hot shit but he was overrated on that list. We are talking about the top 5! How is Missy on that list? Scott Storch is definetly NOT a candidate. Organized Noise....ehhh. Jazzy Pha....maybe. Lil Jon....FUCK NO. Mannie Fresh....Yeah. DJ Premier....Could be and should be. But I don't see JD being in the top 5 maybe top 10.

Posted by: DS at January 11, 2006 01:13 PM

I forgot about Timbaland. Where the fuck is he at on that list?

Posted by: DS at January 11, 2006 01:14 PM

JD doesn't get the respect he deserves because he doesn't have a signature sound. Any Hip Hop head can tell Dre drums from the first 4 bars. Same with tthe Neptunes and the synthensized guitar licks. JD also jumps on bandwangons from biting Kanye's chipmunk funk for Bow to the Wheezy's "Let me Hold you" to the Neptune funk that he bit for "What the Hook gon' be" for Murphy Lee. He deserves his props but he is a major biter. On the flip side, he is a MUCH better MC than Pharell and Dre, a better ghost writer than Missy and I don't know of anythingf he does better than Daz except bounce back from tax issues, I guess. OMG, this sohh blog shit is turning into a hater. I LIKE JD!!!

Posted by: skdamc at January 11, 2006 01:19 PM

JD is always overlooked. They tried to make Mariah's comeback look like Jay-Z and Def Jam had something to do with it. JD gave that girl life. Usher would be irrelevant today after his fuck up with Diddy. JD Bought that nigga into the scene and made that nigga's album, with all the hits.

SO SO Def in the building.

Posted by: P2 at January 11, 2006 01:20 PM

I don't know why in the world JD is not included in that list. He done more than most of the producer's on there. Also, if they are rating hot producers, then they left out Bighub out of Dallas, TX. That dude can get down for his. If any of you cats on this piece is looking for a tight producer. Holla at Bighub. www.myspace.com/bondedsoulzprod.

Posted by: J-ROCK at January 11, 2006 01:33 PM

Mannie Fresh is def. a top five, Storch is too. 9th Wonder makes me go to sleep, his beats are "ehhhhhhhhh". Premo is still ill. Kanye is tight on beats. Neptunes, Chad and Pharell, are tight, not just Pharell. DJ Toomp, Juicy J, Just Blaze, Lil Jon, Timbo, Dre, Will I Am, Jazze.....
They really should have did a top ten list

Posted by: 9th who??? at January 11, 2006 01:36 PM

how they gonna forgfet my boi timbaland?? dat nigga can make hits for rap artist, pop artists,rb artist..hell everybody..fucc that list, and if it wasnt for timmy tim missy's ass woodnt be producing at all. im tired of niggas underratin my boy. i see ya tim

Posted by: tizzle fizz at January 11, 2006 01:36 PM

Does he teach white kids how to be Crips? Whats Daz rappin about now.....drugs,guns,sex,gangs,drugs,guns,sex,gangs,etc....? just a few questions, can someone help me out????

Posted by: The Black Devil at January 11, 2006 02:34 PM

Missy produces? Who and what...and how'd she land on the list?

I don't like JD or his music, but dude has produced madd talent. Respect where it's due I guess.

Dre is the shit! Preme should be on there. Storch of course...

On the North End (Canada) - got give props to Saukrates, Kardinal, and the sickest Canadian artist: Classified. Dude is like 5 albums deep (last 2 have been sick-as-fuc), produces all of his own beats (as well as beats for others including Maestro), and is a hidden gem in Canadian Hip Hop. Respect that.

Posted by: AK at January 11, 2006 02:43 PM

Co-sign on the kid Classified. That cat's nice. Redman signed Saukrates over 2 years ago, but no albums yet?!?!?

Good to see some Canadian content on this site.

Posted by: Canada at January 11, 2006 02:54 PM

"Where is Redman?", Daz is strait he's just in Dre's shadow, he'll never shine til Dre leaves the game. Even though he's in ATL he stil got that West flava

Posted by: CTS at January 11, 2006 03:01 PM

Missy Elliot?
Top 5 right now
1. DJ Paul and Juicy J
2. Dr. Dre
3. Timbaland
4. Jazze Phizzle
5. Mannie Fresh
Michael Watts holds it down, but only few heads can get down wit screw.

Redman was supposed to drop Dec 2005 - Red Gone Wild - it got pushed back indefinetly?!? I don't know why. I've been ithcin' for some new Red.

Posted by: Canada at January 11, 2006 03:10 PM

This list is a little whack.

First of all someone said JD doesn't have a 'signature sound'?

Huh?

JD sure as shit has his own sound. Who's been producing HITs out of the south longer than JD? Besides Face and Reid?

No one.

No one has been more consistant than JD for as long.

Secondly, I have a little issue with Missy being in the top 5, because she doesn't actually make beats. She writes and does vocal arrangements, but those hot beats are always produced by someone else.

If it had said Tim AND Missy, then I could go for that.

The two of them together are the SUPER TWINS for real.

And as someone already pointed out 'executive producer' doesn't mean Dre produced EVERY track on the album.

Read those liner notes are little more closely and you'll see serveral people with credits on each track.

Add to that, those tight synth lines of Dre's actually have been coming from Scott Storch lately. (if it weren't for the fact that he's producing Paris Hilton right now, maybe he would have made the list himself. ouch)

Posted by: willyjsimmons at January 11, 2006 04:50 PM

DAZ IS A BETTER PRODUCER THAN JD SO WHATS ALL THE FUSS?

Posted by: Erbn at January 11, 2006 05:00 PM

If JD is not on that list then the list is BOGUS, and he's gonna put Missy over Timberland, you know dude was either, down on rock, fell off in a doze or just plain on another planet. While Dre deserves his props and even the rest of them may have just cause, but come on DREAMER.

Posted by: YourDreaming at January 11, 2006 05:20 PM

Skdamc, you have made one of the most ignorant posts of all time. Did I read it wrong or did you say JD was a MUCH better MC than Dr. Dre??!!! YOU ARE A FUCKING IDIOT. Excuse the language, but I guess you have never heard of the chronic. If you think the garbage musicians that JD puts out are hot then that is your opinion but never, EVER say that JD is a better MC than Dr. Dre.

Posted by: JonnyK at January 11, 2006 06:37 PM

It must be said.

The Chronic, was 90% Parliament/Funkadelic.

His rhymes were alright, but the credit for the music belongs to George Clinton.

Posted by: willyjsimmons at January 11, 2006 07:01 PM

The most underrated producer of all time is RZA. RZA produced all of Wu's Classic Albums. When Raekwon and BIG had beef, BIG had some much for Respect for RZA that he asked he to produce one of his best songs (Long Kiss Goodnight). Don't believe me, all you P2P download Rainy Days, Camay, Cold War, Verbal Intercouse and listen to the beat. He got to be top 3

Posted by: bkbred at January 11, 2006 07:19 PM

Some of you people are dumbasses (uk rap fan). Being a producer doesn't necessarily mean you played all the instruments. Dre, Kanye, and plenty other producers have musicians play out their arrangments. Some have the musicians play what they want. There is more to production than beat making. How about arranging the song, overseeing the whole outcome of the song including the overall mix, or actully getting the artist to perform the way the producers envisions it. We are in a age of "beatmakers" who just submit beats and the artist rhymes over it. Thats why the industry is so shitty right now.

Posted by: DS at January 11, 2006 07:26 PM

Liquid Swords is a fuckin classic.

RZA does his thing.

He does get more film jobs than most hip-hop producers though.

Posted by: Phil at January 11, 2006 11:14 PM

Undoubtedly RZA was one of the top producers of the 90's, just listen to any of the Wu-Tang albums or Digital Bullet. All of this talk of DJ Paul and Juicy J or Mannie Fresh being top five producers is a little much. How can you not put Kanye West on any list? Anyone ever listened to the Blueprint or either of his CD's??? DJ Paul, Juicy J and Mannie Fresh have produced songs with repetitive and shallow themes for 10 years now but people want to recognize them over Kanye West,Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, or Pete Rock (no one has even mentioned Pete Rock?!) That shows that alot of these people are just hearing songs, not listening.

Posted by: JonnyK at January 11, 2006 11:48 PM

JD is kinda hot, he writes everybody's shyt, i mean Oh I Think They Like Me is a hot track, jus wit the wrong peepz, Bow Wow verse was the best, and guess who wrote it- JD. And who eva wrote this blog is a clown for takin shotz at Dr. Dre.

Thats the most blatently ignorant list I have ever seen. Pharrell? Missy Elliot?? Kanye??? It's like the list was made by a 15 year old who started listening to rap last year.

No DJ Premier, Large Professor, The Alchemist, or Pete Rock on the list? No Mannie Fresh or J. Prince?

And if the site was going to put Dre, atleast give credit to DJ Yella.

Posted by: Hell to the fuckin' naw! at January 12, 2006 08:25 AM

Johnny K: Dre NEVER wrote his own rhymes, Dummy. JD writes his rhymes, Da Brat's rhymes, Bow Wow's rhymes, Kriss Kross rhymes and so on. You must stop with the knee jerk reactions and research your topic. Dre NEVER wrote his rhymes, hence NOT A BETTER MC. MC's write their own rhymes, rappers rap. Chew on that shit.

Posted by: skdamc at January 12, 2006 08:43 AM

OK...ON the Dre versus JD debate, even though I'm a Dre fan, I must admit that JD is the better MC. However, Dre is the better rapper and what sets Dre apart from the other producers is that he NEVER PRODUCES FILLER OR GARBAGE. Everything is the shit.

Posted by: Keven K. at January 12, 2006 09:30 AM

Ok skdamc, you doing too much. JD is cool producer, but he aint ever wrote one of the BRAT's rhymes nigga. Do your research. She was grown and was winning talent shows for rapping before she met JD nigga, matter of fact thats how she met that JD nigga. Brat goes hard. keep it in on topic, producing music. Kriss kross yes, i dont even know about bow wow, because if you take his first album and 2nd album and think, you can hear the brat coming out in his shit. I've heard jd rap, "straight out the gila man, known as a killa man," he couldnt write a better verse than that????? MAN THE BRAT RIPPPED THAT SHIT!!!! Thats how you know, nigga she from the chi and she rap like it. Dont take that away from her man, she'll eat up every chick in the game or ever was in the game. Yes even that shemale rah digga will get her ass ate up too. DAMN!!!!

the actual top 10(in order) is:
1.of course the muthafuckin doctor.
2.timbo-consistent,trendsetting,always got some heat.
3.pharrell and chad(they a team,so its both of them niggas).
4.dj quik(give him some rispeezie{thats respect for all you hood-language-challenged people}
5.JD-does MORE than hip hop,so he is one of the best overall, but in hip hop he comes in at like 5.
6.rza-extremely creative and classic, and always keeps it hood.
7.k. west-yall already know.
8.daz dilly-dude makes fire, but he aint in the top 5.
9.dj premier-ultimate boom-bap classic shit.
10.lil jon-he makes that gas,that club shit.

DJ Premier made hits from Notorious B.I.G. to Jay-Z to Kool G Rap to Big L. (Almost) Every rapper who's been legendary has had production from Preme. Not just a silly pop hit on MTV.

And for the south, J. Prince made Rap-A-Lot what is was. From Scarface to UGK.

Dr. Dre don't be making those beats. He got a team of like 12 dudes who really makes the beats he claims he produces. Everybody knows that Scott Storch really makes all of Dre's dope beats. All Dre can do is program drums. He don't really do shit.
D.J. Premier And Jay Dilla are what's up. And are we forgetting about Kanye.

The south ain't got no dope producers.
