I was just in ATL for Christmas. My cousin took me to the Pool Palace, I still think that D4L are the wackest ever. I live in Atlanta and Laffy Taffy is old as fuck, I been hearing that shit mainly at the Strip Clubs for well over a year now. First of all D4L did not move any units independently on the streets they went from creating a street buzz , to radio play, to being singed to a major deal. So you gotta ask yourself why are these labels and A&R's signing acts that didn't even move 10,000 units independently? Look at Jeezy he sold over 200,000 units of that Trap or Die mixtape before he was signed to a major label. So that makes sense that a label would go out and recruit him. So if you wanna be mad at the current state of commercial hiphop then be mad at these corporate behemoths and the A&R's who are looking for the next big thing from their current cash cow which is the South.

All who hate: listen, soon enough rap will make its 90 degree to something else. Whether you like it or not means nothing. When rap was new, niggas was hating. When rap was problack, niggas had a problem with that. When it was all about the east coast niggas hated. When it was all about west coast niggas hated. I've read most of these blogs and its hilarious to me that D4L and Dem Franchise Boys can spark so much anger and hate. The bottom line is every one has different taste and usually, notice I said usually, people prefer music that comes from their city, coast, region, etc. To me its cultural, down here in the A we are about partying, dancing and having a good time and right now the new music coming out of here reflects that. I dont think anybody will argue that D4L and Franchise will get lyrics of the year but the music is fun, the beats are hot, and in the club the shit works. It makes everybody move and feel good. The people on here that are angry about their music need to lighten up its just a new type of music, I promise it won't kill hip hop :) I can understand why some people not feeling their music and its probably because you don't understand how we get down in the clubs in the A. Personally, I'm not a fan of the east coast "style" but that doesn't mean that I think the artist are garbage its just that I don't like the beats, I can't get with the way some of them talk, etc. Not all but some, and I'm sure people feel the same way about us. In the words of T.I. everybody "Be Easy" let them niggas shine while they got the light. I'm down with any black person getting they paper legit especially when they are from somewhere like Bankhead. naturally we will be listening to our own music (i.e., notice how here in the South you never hear an artist from the East Coast unless they are on the same track as one of our artists?). NY critics have attacked our dominance the same as they did the West Coast by saying we are not “lyrically” strong. Please! Andre 3000 is better than any rapper residing in NY including Talib and Mos Def. Yeah I said that shit!!! I will go toe to toe with you for every NY MC that you feel is “lyrically” strong, I will give you a Southern rapper of equal or stronger stature. As much as I hate Lil’ Flip, I love that track he has with David Banner (another who feels like me about the arrogance of East Coast hip-hop critics) on number 13 from “Underground Legend” talking about how the South helped pioneer hip-hop.

The biggest dis for west coast artist has probably come at the hands of the NY based press. Hip Hop magazines like The Source were percieved as constantly dissin' west coast artists via negative reviews and low ratings. Many felt that the musical icons from here out west were routinely dissected and dismissed within the pages of such publications. In actuality it appeared as if there was a lack of understanding of west coast hip hop culture. Critics never looked at an artists from a west coast perspective...instead they applied NY standards to an artist who never checked for things out of that arena. Hence a west coast artist who struck gold with his homeboys from around the way for having a slow rollin' funk beat would get dissed in NY based magazines for being too simplistic in his music... What wasn't realized was that such an artist may have been strivin' to make the ultimate beat for someone ridin' in a car and in fact may have achieved that objective... Of course NY critics not understanding this would arrogantly dismiss west coast artists.. This of course not only hurt the artist but also angered the legions of fans this artist had cultivated.
For example, I remember how pissed folks in Oakland became when they heard how Too Short a Bay Area icon was being dissed by NY critics... His first album on Jive Records was the toast of the town out here... NY critics were dissing it, because they didn't like the beats or Short's slow rap style.. All this was happening at a time [the late 80s] when west coast artists were still seeking acceptance from NY.. the birthplace and mecca of hip hop. Such disses were taken as personal rejections.

Such rejections were felt even more when many west coast people would go away to music conventions and recall hearing comments from east coast writers djs and panelists stating things like west coast artists 'are country', 'they can';t rap', their music is wack.. and of course the 'west coast artists aren't really hip hop.. they are only rap'. These critics stereotyped and never bothered to learn the west coast culture. They've never bothered to research and acknowledge that grafitti, djaying, dancing and emceeing were as much a part of west coast life as it was back east. The only difference was the style and flava that west coasters exuded when executing these activities.

East coast artists really fueled the east/west conflict on a number of different levels... sometimes right in the backyard of popular west coast artists.. I recall East Coast acts refusing to relinquish stage time or open up for west coast icons despite the overwhelming fan response. This happened to folks like Too Short and Hammer. The offending groups were Stetsasonic and Run DMC.

Folks out west can recall more then a few east coast artists who would be on some of the local rap shows dissin' west coast music...and then would try and clown listeners for not supporting their own music. Two artist that immediately come to mind are Jeru and MOP.. In fact the situation surrounding Jeru resulted in a year long boycott of his music from the Bay Area's Hip Hop Coalition. Most of their remarks would come from a point of pure ignorance, but as WC said 'enough is enough'.

Tim Dog was the one who may have drawn first blood on vinyl when deciding to write dis songs for his debut lp 'Penacilin On Wax' Remember long before Ice Cube was yelling 'westside'.. Tim Dog was yelling 'F*@k Compton'.. and while I understand he had some legitimate reasons for wanting to call out the group NWA in that song, he unfortunately took things a few steps further by dissing DJ Quick among others.. DJ Quick up to that point had never said anything about Tim Dog if he even knew him. In fact I recall reading an article about DJ Quick and how fascinated he was when he went to New York and got a chance to visit the Bronx. Ironically Tim Dog now lives in LA and his attitude has dramatically changed.. He attributes some of earlier disses to being ovcerly ambitious.

I suggest you East Coast critics start respecting our music because you are about to find out, if you already haven't, that your glory days of ruling the charts are very long behind you. Your region created hip-hop, and the rest of the country thanks you, BUT WE'LL TAKE IT FROM HERE.

When record labels started noticing that Southern MC’s were selling 300,000 copies with no radio play at 10 dollars a pop, they wanted in on that 3 million dollars. Southern MC’s didn’t and still don’t go for that shit. The most a record label will get out of most Southern MC’s is a distribution deal because MC’s from the South have too much of a legacy that traces back to slavery to be giving their lives away to record labels like East Coast artists do. East Coast artists used to sell like 4 million copies and come home with about $42,000 (before taxes).

East Coast folk are always talking about how the South is lyricless and that all we produce is crunk music (they intentionally forget MC's such as Andre 3000, Eightball, Bun B, Killa Mike, Scarface, Project Pat, and TI when they say that…). After Incognegro, Back for the First Time and Word of Mouf and over a list of tracks that serve as a mediocre mix of bass and booty (both fundamentals of a Southern rap song), Ludacris and imitative clique Disturbing Tha Peace come incorrect with another collaborative project, Golden Grain.

Ludacris, Shawna, Tity Boi, I-20 and Lil' Fate definitely succeed at turning potentially noteworthy notes on Southern life into a massive chunk of repetitiously annoying blab.

The Warrior: Pastor Troy

He can represent like no one else can and on his most recent explosion, Universal Soldier, Pastor Troy preaches a sermon that has his fanatic congregation chanting battle hymns. Right now they are rallying together and preparing for war.

Born Micah Levar Troy, this deeply religious rapper from College Park, Ga., faced a number of obstacles, seemingly strategically placed barriers that worked together to force his surrender. But Troy fought hard and refused to let anything test his own victory. Instead, he learned and mastered the trade of his drill sergeant-turned-pastor father.

Troy's first advance, We Ready — I Declare War (1999), ignored the cursory glances of other ill-equipped rap competition and instead shared a few secrets from his own advantage-taking game plan. The album rounds off with bass-heavy vibrancy in "No Mo Play in GA," a commanding track that makes listeners get crunk one more time.

The Messenger: Cee-Lo

If you gave Slick Rick a country twang, a little George Clinton retro-funk and a lyrical flow that delivers a soulful philosophy with every spit, you might get someone who resembles Cee-Lo Green. But odds are that this Atlanta native, Goodie Mob crew original element and Dungeon Family member can't — won’t — be cloned.

His presence reeks of electric flamboyance, an unfamiliarly unique feel of musical genius. His intelligent rhymes tell tales of spiritual journeys, meditative travels of a melodic mastermind.

In front of a hyping guitar track, Santana's "Do You Like The Way" (Supernatural, 1999) introduced Mr.Green to new audience while he and super-talent Lauryn Hill jointly pursued the elements of expressive poignancy and musical collaboration.

Cee-Lo's finger rarely loses the pulse of southern consciousness and his message reflects a keen awareness of the historical and present struggle of its black folk.

Debut solo project Cee-Lo Green & His Perfect Imperfections (2002), undoubtedly one of the most innovative contributions to current hip-hop music, is a divine gift and only for the most gracious.

The sharp colors and careful shots of curvaceous bodies in loud dress captured lead single "Closet Freak" like no other video concept could have.

The Token: Ludacris

"Rollout," "Area Codes," "Move Bitch" and "Saturday" were the ones to recently flood pop and hip-hop airwaves alike, invade young stereos and take dictators MTV and BET indefinitely hostage in an unprecedented approach. They must have set a record for something.

But in the summer of 2000, Former Hot 97.5 radio personality Chris Lova Lova (a.k.a. Chris Bridges) sat behind the mic of his deejay booth next to ex-road dawg Poon Daddy, dropped the works of undiscovered local talent and proclaimed them soon-to-be Future Flavas — or not.

Almost as quick as a double take, this turned-Atlanta based "rapper" changed personalities. It was not long until the clownish front man dropped that radio gig for a whole new and more exciting bag. And this time it was Ludacris who urged pin-up proclamations by unfocused others (maybe it was the hair), labeling him the Dirty South "it" man.

After Incognegro, Back for the First Time and Word of Mouf and over a list of tracks that serve as a mediocre mix of bass and booty (both fundamentals of a Southern rap song), Ludacris and imitative clique Disturbing Tha Peace come incorrect with another collaborative project, Golden Grain.

Ludacris, Shawna, Tity Boi, I-20 and Lil' Fate definitely succeed at turning potentially noteworthy notes on Southern life into a massive chunk of repetitiously annoying blab.

Quite ludicrous.

The Warrior: Pastor Troy

He can represent like no one else can and on his most recent explosion, Universal Soldier, Pastor Troy preaches a sermon that has his fanatic congregation chanting battle hymns. Right now they are rallying together and preparing for war.

Born Micah Levar Troy, this deeply religious rapper from College Park, Ga., faced a number of obstacles, seemingly strategically placed barriers that worked together to force his surrender. But Troy fought hard and refused to let anything test his own victory. Instead, he learned and mastered the trade of his drill sergeant-turned-pastor father.

Troy's first advance, We Ready — I Declare War (1999), ignored the cursory glances of other ill-equipped rap competition and instead shared a few secrets from his own advantage-taking game plan. The album rounds off with bass-heavy vibrancy in "No Mo Play in GA," a commanding track that makes listeners get crunk one more time.

Like unstoppable troops, Pastor Troy and his Down South Georgia Boys (D.S.G.B) dropped "We Ready," "Do It," "This Tha City" and "Vice Versa," inevitable attacks that took many casualties through their beats and declared Troy a most passionate superpower.

With after-shockish Pastor Troy for President (2000) and Face Off (2001) just beginning to settle, Pastor Troy hit even harder this time. Universal Soldier reflects a long-lasting tradition of armed distinction and guarantees lasting patriotism from those who appreciate his music and always have his back.

The Messenger: Cee-Lo

If you gave Slick Rick a country twang, a little George Clinton retro-funk and a lyrical flow that delivers a soulful philosophy with every spit, you might get someone who resembles Cee-Lo Green. But odds are that this Atlanta native, Goodie Mob crew original element and Dungeon Family member can't — won’t — be cloned.

His presence reeks of electric flamboyance, an unfamiliarly unique feel of musical genius. His intelligent rhymes tell tales of spiritual journeys, meditative travels of a melodic mastermind.

In front of a hyping guitar track, Santana's "Do You Like The Way" (Supernatural, 1999) introduced Mr.Green to new audience while he and super-talent Lauryn Hill jointly pursued the elements of expressive poignancy and musical collaboration.

Cee-Lo's finger rarely loses the pulse of southern consciousness and his message reflects a keen awareness of the historical and present struggle of its black folk.

Debut solo project Cee-Lo Green & His Perfect Imperfections (2002), undoubtedly one of the most innovative contributions to current hip-hop music, is a divine gift and only for the most gracious.

The sharp colors and careful shots of curvaceous bodies in loud dress captured lead single "Closet Freak" like no other video concept could have.

"Big Ole Words," "El Dorado Sunshine Super Chicken," "Suga Baby," "Gettin' Grown" and "Medieval Times" are that butter, chock-full of fine plays on words and complicated tracks that confirm this artist's status as an alumnus of the elite school of hard flow.

The Crunk Masters: Lil’ Jon and The Eastside Boyz

Lil’ Jon and The Eastside Boyz don't care how much more y'all can take. They'll bring it anyway.

A Dirty South club must-have, any song by this Georgia trio shakes amplifiers with incessant bass lines that provoke an excitatory adrenaline rush. Simple beats transform themselves into room-trembling hits when coated by the groups' vigorous chants.

"Put Yo Hood Up" and "Bia Bia" (Put Yo Hood Up, 2001) have been known to paralyze the lower appendages of some listeners at first, and then they strike with a second dose of that healin' crunkness, that fye fye sensational shit.

And there's nothing more rousing than a live performance by Jon, Sam and Bo where standing still is not an option.

Most recently it is Kings of Crunk 2 that is leaving Lil’ Jon and his boys all shaken up themselves. With a rugged vibe that just won't stop bumping, this ultra-collaborative project is like an Atlanta block party, with live performances by the whole ‘hood.

Eightball, MJG, Pastor Troy, Trick Daddy, UGK and the Ying Yang Twins all represent their own cliques with rambunctious rips that follow the lead of this pioneering gang who have surely emerged from underground for good.

The Remixer: DJ Screw

The AdvisErs: Goodie Mob (Khujo, T-Mo, Cee-Lo, Big Gipp)

In Other Words: In 1995, they came and silenced hip-hop chatter with their debut album's projected new world order, a heavy plan that placed Atlanta and the rest of the South on the map. And when the Mob steps on stage, their neo-fabulousness transforms the space into a holy pulpit and resembles a roundtable discussion on ghettology between Marvin Gaye and Malcolm X.

Southern musicians aren't used to being on the tail end of any genre. After all, the South is where jazz and blues were invented. So the past 25 years must have been painful for Southern rappers, having to stand by while New York City and Los Angeles rhymers got all the respect and most of the record sales. Not anymore.
