The All-Time One-Hit-Wonder List!

kris kross.gif
Yo, I recently read a German article on Hip Hop's Top 10 One-Hit-Wonders and yep you guessed it, there were some ATL cats on that list. Yeah, I 'll give them Tag Team and Kris Kross, although JD did manage to put out a couple of hits with these Mack Daddy's or is it Daddy Macks? I forget...

I put little value in this list, I don't know where the Germans are getting their info from but The Geto Boys, Big Pun, Biz Markie, and Digital Underground should never be on anybody's one hit wonder list. Never ever ever ever. Besides, how can you have a Greatest One-Hit-Wonder anyway? Get outta here?

Are Video Pro's Really Being Exploited?

tip.gif
I recently had a chance to read an article on two former Spelman students who were incensed after viewing rapper Nelly's 'Tip Drill' video in March 2004 and took a stand against what they saw as the exploitation of women, thereby starting a national conversation about hip-hop culture. A theme that is going hand in hand with some of the discussions this week at Spelman College's "Hip Hop Week".

I was interested in finding out the real definition of exploitation, a word being passed around frequently these days. Here's what I found:
Exploit-To make use of unfairly for one's own advantage.

Now, as I see it everybody in the "Tip Drill" video (and other "uncut" videos) is getting something out of it. Now, whatever that something may be varies by individual.

Stop saying these women are being exploited when they are gaining either celebrity access, media exposure, or whatever it is they seek to acquire. So as I see it, it's not exploitation when everybody benefits, Ask Nelly or better yet check the definition.

MC Lyte In Town For Hip Hop Week at Spelman College

lyte.jpg
What's good people? Another day another dollar...I guess we got the same dreams. But really, we've got some serious legends of the game in town this week at Spelman.

This week keep an eye out for arguably the greatest female MC of all-time MC Lyte, she's here for a five day event dubbed "Hip Hop Week". Also scheduled to attend some of the sessions during the week are Chuck D, Salt, Da Brat, and Yo-Yo. Yo-Yo, that's some serious old school right there for some of you don't knows.

All week Spelman will be hosting a five-day offering of guest lectures and panel discussions that address the impact of the hip-hop culture in the community. So, if you are really interested in talking some positive hip hop this week then you should try to attend some of these events. Don't worry, it's cool to take a break from the 50 and Jay beef for a minute, it'll be there when you get back.

Lil' Jon' and 50 Partner Up

lil jon.jpg
Yeeeeeeaaaaaaaah!! It's official, Lil' Jon announced that BME Recordings has reached a deal with 50 Cent’s G-Unit to cross-promote BME and G-Unit artists.

I initially heard a rumor that Lil Scrappy was leaving for G-Unit but apparently that's not true, he's still BME but will do work with G-Unit. Lil Jon did say that Scrappy will be the first artist realeased under the new partnership.

I couldn't figure out why Jon was on the Anger Management Tour in the first place, especially as the opening act but now it all makes sense. It's apparent that 50 is trying to monopolize the rap game and doing a damn good job of it. So who's next to sign their life over?

D4L Still Humble Despite Their Success

dfl.jpg
Atlanta's own D4L has seemingly seen life full-circle, after rising from the projects in Atlanta to achieving major national success in the music industry. Their first single "Laffy Taffy" has rapidly risen up the charts in dramatic fashion. Yet the quartet from the westside of Atlanta remain grounded and steady in their faith in God. We had a chance to catch up with group members Lil' Mob and Mook B recently to discuss the immense success of the single and how life in general has changed for D4L lately.

SOHH.COM:
When everybody went in to record "Laffy Taffy" did you anticipate the song taking off like it has?

D4L:
Well we work extra hard at we do and anytime you work hard at something good things happen. We knew it was a banger but we didn't know it was going to take off so quick. We just promoting candy baby that's it.

SOHH.COM:
With "Laffy Taffy" being your first major hit, how do you feel about being labeled as commercial rappers or "gimmick" rappers?

D4L:
It's all love you know because one thing about it is we're all strong believers in God so we don't let things like that affect us. We don't trip off things like that. We know where we come from so it don't even matter.

SOHH.COM
What song off of the self-titled D4L CD do you plan on releasing next?

D4L:
Well we plan to drop "Bet Ya Can't Do It Like Me" next with the boy Mike Jones. The same way we hit the world with "Laffy Taffy" we gon' hit them again with "Bet Ya Can't Do It Like Me". The album D4L will be in stores on November 8 so everybody make sure you go pick it up.

SOHH.COM:
I know that you have to be enjoying everything that's going on right now. Have you taken time to digest everything?

D4L:
Oh yeah man like I said we from the bottom, the bottom of the barrel. From where we come from it's just crazy that we made it out. Everybody come from separate projects on the westside of Atlanta to put this thing together. It's big man. We all just came together as one fist and we about to hit the world where it hurt at.

SOHH.COM:
What do you think the difference is between you and other artists in Atlanta?

D4L:
Well yeah we got that snap in our music when you hear that you know it's us. We down for life man, Blood In Blood Out. You can hear it in the music.

SOHH.COM:
Where was the Laffy Taffy video shot?

D4L:
The Laffy Taffy video was shot in Atlanta at Atlanta Live. The next song will be in Atlanta too man, everything we do man we do for Atlanta no question.

SOHH.COM:
In conclusion, what's next for D4L?

D4L:
Right now we about to go on "The Mouth of The South" tour for a minute and then we'll get back to the music again. But for now just pick up the album on November 8th. Also we'll be doing it big for the album release party probably an all-black affair, we planning it now and everybody's intvited.

Georgia Congresswoman Proposes Government Open Tupac Murder Files

pac.jpg
I have to give major props to Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney for wanting the government files on Tupac to be opened. At a recent caucus meeting Ms. McKinney told a packed audience that she will be introducing legislation to open the government files on the life and death of Tupac Shakur. The hope is that both Pac as well as Big's murder cases will have new light shed on them.

The actual legislative meeting happened a couple of weeks ago and hopefully progress has been made since that time. Whatever the case, it's will be a step in the right direction should the files be made public because we all know that there are some serious holes in both Big and Pac's murder investigation.

Many questions need to be answered, like how can two murders take place while FBI and police had the murder victims under surveillance anyway? Hmmm.... The questions are many.

I just don't know how realistic it is to perform a proper investigation after nine years of spotty police. We'll see, because obviously something is being hidden for members of congress to be in the mix now.

W-ATL Radio...Hot Joints To Cop Immediately!

sl-1200.jpg
Just providing my weekly drop on everybody. I rotate these Technics daily so I'm just trying to keep everybody else abreast of what's really bangin in the streets and in the clubs these days. We'll just keep it ATL-related for the most part. Of course I'm bangin that Papoose, new Redman, and Biggie etc...but it's a A-Town thing so I'll keep it on those terms for this blog.

1. "I'm a G" -Bun B & T.I. - This is a serious joint right here, matter of fact the entire CD is a must cop right now, I'm predicting gold easily. T.I. spits a serious 16 on here but Bun B carries the song for the most part. Also check out Luda on "Trill".

2. "Corner Cuttin" - Gucci Mane - Strictly for the ride. Another song for the 22-inch or better citizens. Gucci's CD is the lick. After several months, still a street banger. Might not be on Jeezy's level but definitely worth a good listen.

3. "Crack Dat Head" - Maceo - The ultimate get crunk song. Guaranteed to get whovever or whatever hyped as soon as it comes on. Serious club joint.

4. "Body Rock" - Purple Ribbon (Killer Mike) - If you have gotten tired of Kryptonite already like me (I wore it out) then this is a joint that will appetize you until they drop the full CD. Not really a club joint but definitely cool to marinate to. Killer's verse is crazy too. I've said it a bunch of times, 2005-2006 will be his year.

Dallas Austin To Introduce Official ATL Theme Song Tonight

dallas austin.jpg
Producer Dallas Austin has written a city theme song, scheduled to debut at halftime of Monday night's football game between the Falcons and the Jets. I'm assuming and hoping that Dallas worked with some credible artists on this now that all of us ATL residents have to attach our names to this.

I don't know where the idea came from but I was cool with "Welcome to Atlanta" or "Players Ball" myself. I was even getting used to Field Mob and Luda's "Georgia On my Mind".

It sounds like political propoganda now that the mayor is suddenly interested in rap music? But hey, how many other cities out there have the courage to adopt a hip hop theme song, especially in these times when even the NBA has taken a stand against the hip hop movement by implementing a conservative dress code.

Young Jeezy's Not Too Big For The Baby Mama Drama

jeezy.jpg
So Young Jeezy's baby mama wants 20 grand a month for child support now. And what does she plan to use it on? Clothing, transportation and housing she says (You know, the bare necessities of life). But damn I didn't know it costed that much. Something tells me she's headed straight to the gucci shop, Lenox mall, the hairdresser etc...

Don't get me wrong, I do think he needs to pay more than the previously ordered $178 a month. The average father pays double that amount anyway. Yeah dude is a star but she's just on some way out shit asking for 20K a month (240K a year). I mean what's he going to do five years from now when he's not a multi-platinum artist? Yep you guessed it, probably incarcerated for non-payment.

So fellas, the moral of this story is this...If you don't do anything else in life, Keep ya baby mama happy if you have one because you never know when you might blow up. I'm guessing that he wasn't stepping up to the plate like he should've been for her to go for the juggler like this.

Field Mob, Forever Country And Proud Of It

field mob.jpg
Recently, I had a chance to catch up with Field Mob and discuss everything from their recent DTP signing to their highly anticipated third CD release Light Poles and Pine Trees. As expected, Smoke and Shawn Jay were their usual self, candid and pulling no punches. They concluded the interview by proclaiming themselves to be at the top of the game, and from the songs that I've heard off of Light Poles and Pine Trees they might not be too far off the mark with that declaration.

SOHH.COM:
So where did the name for your new CD Light Poles and Pine Trees come from?

FIELD MOB:
When you riding through on the highway that's all you see is Light Poles and Pine Trees in Georgia. You know how St. Louis got the Arch and D.C. has the Washington Monument and so forth, well in Albany all we have is Light Poles and Pine Trees. The album drops in early November, then we got the compilation "Ludacris Presents Disturbing The Peace" dropping on December 13th. Also, look out for our new label Field Mob Incorporated coming soon.

SOHH.COM:
What producers and other artists did you work with on the CD?

FIELD MOB:
We worked with Ken-Jo, out of Albany, who did about 80% of the CD, Jazzy Pha, and my man Voodoo who produced "Georgia On My Mind". As far as verses, we really don't mess with too many artists because we feel like why pay somebody to do a verse when we can do it 10x better our damn 'self. But we did work with Luda of course, Bun B, and Ciara on this project.

SOHH.COM:
How did you and DTP end up linking up?

FIELD MOB:
We been down with them for a couple years anyway. We knew Luda from when he was doing the radio station thing back in the day. My man Shaka Zulu hooked everything up for us.

SOHH.COM:
The first single "Friday Night" is doing good, are you shooting a video for that?

FIELD MOB:
Yeah we shot the video for Friday Night already, and man they loving it. It should be on MTV/BET real soon. We shot that in Atlanta. Next we shooting the Georgia On My Mind video in Albany this month. Ain't much here but it's home. Alot of people don't realize this, but Ray Charles is originally from Albany, GA not Florida.

SOHH.COM
How do you feel about the music scene in Georgia right now?

FIELD MOB:
I mean it's cool. Atlanta is where we live but Albany is where we from, so we represent every small town in America from Lawton, OK to Quincy, FL we don't care. We the reason that country is acceptable in the rap game. I remember watching a well-known southern rapper deny being country back in the day, so we just said we'll never be like that. We puttin' country on the map. Atlanta has always been that market and it's so big that you can't overlook it now. You have to give Atlanta the same credit that you give New York because we been doing this for a long, long time now.

SOHH.COM:
What's else should we look forward to on the CD and what's dropping next?

FIELD MOB:
We going to drop some gritty music next time. We might even go with that Jazzy Pha & Ciara cut "So What" at some point.

SOHH.COM:
I'm going to read you a quote from Killer Mike off his Monster CD. "My country cousins I would take on the world in a battle if they would let me have you two. I have more respect for you two than the ink in this pen will allow me to write"

FIELD MOB:
Oh yeah we fucks with Mike. We got much respect for Killer, alot of people feel like that but just never say it and Mike just brought it out. Believe it or not we both going through some of the same things with this music. We feel the same way about Mike, he would definitely be one of the first we call too.

SOHH.COM:
We gone leave y'all with this. Y'all just make sure to go cop this album because we the best rap duo out right now. We are THE dynamic duo. We are the best, PERIOD. It's our time right now, others have had their time but it's our time right now. Don't get us wrong we love Outkast and UGK they our favorites, but everybody got they time and hopefully our time is now. I mean who else would you put up there at the top but us?

Jason Terry Launches Independent Record Label

JT.jpg

Former Atlanta Hawk Jason Terry is jumping into the rap game as head of atlanta-based indie label Reason Records.

I heard talk of JT starting a label a couple of years back but now it's official. He's already signed a couple of artists, playing a behind the scenes role, concentrating more on the business end of things.

Mentored by Master P of No Limit Records and Jermaine Dupri while in Atlanta, JT's first signee's are West Koasta Nostra, comprised of four former Seattle and Arizona gang members, slated as the first group to drop.

Their first album The Shakedown is expected to have a west coast/southern feel to it, with guest apperarances from Bone Crusher, Da Brat, Bun B and Jazze Pha. I guess when you have NBA money, you can get anybody to collab with you.

I wish JT the best though, hopefully he transitions into the game better than Iverson, C-Webb, and the rest did. Word is, he's still spending alot of time in Atlanta on the hunt for new artists.

Lil Wayne Officially Joins Boyz N Da Hood

weezy.jpg
If the rumors are true, I'm already a fan. Weezy is a monster lyrically (Yeah, we do have lyricists down here for all you non-believers). However, I think that the whole Boyz N Da Hood thing is played out, so let's move on.

T.I., despite ongoing rumors is not joining the group, having issued the following statement:
"Contrary to rumors circulating around the Internet, I have not and will not be joining Boyz N Da Hood. Although I am and have always been part of the movement, I am not a member of the group. This is just another case of 'Urban Legend'."

Blok Entertainment reportedly stated that the original roster of Boyz N Da Hood included T.I., Trick Daddy and Sean Paul of the YoungBloodz and the newer members replaced them. Damn that's a serious decline! From T.I. and Trick to Big Gee and Big Duke?

Jeezy reportedly left to concentrate on his solo project and initially only agreed to do one project with Blok.

The Ludacris and ETSU Saga Continues On...

Ludacris just can't get it right with these college performances I see. First there was a problem in Boston a couple years back, then East Tennessee State went back and forth with city officials on some political BS. What next?

I know the collegiate money is good when it comes to doing these shows, I've been on those SGA committees before, but is it really that serious for an artist of Cris' status. City officials expressed security concerns among other things as if Luda was NWA reincarnated or something.

The thing is, when dealing with universities you have so many outside entities involved, not to mention thousands of kids 17-21 years of age who can barely contain themselves off Heineken, not to mention Grey Goose . That's why I say stay on some grown man shhh' Luda and do the conventional shows at the conventional places like convention centers. You'll avoid the majority of the complications.

The last I heard they didn't want to pay him, then the show was cancelled etc...now the show is back on. I'm thoroughly confused at this point. I say move on Luda, but you know what they say "It's The Principle".

But yo, on a lighter note make sure you get to the Battle of the Bands on Sunday here in Atlanta.

Trillville Discusses New Album, "Reloaded" and Beef with Lil Scrappy

trillville.jpg

I recently had a chance to politic with the Trillville and find out where they've been this last year and what they have on deck for us in the near future. During our interview, they candidly discuss their many business moves as well as dive into the so-called beef with Lil' Scrappy.

SOHH.COM:
What's on the agenda for Trillville right now?

TRILLVILLE:
We just dropped I'm Pimpin with E-40 and that's off the upcoming Reloaded album which should be dropping in November. The first single off the CD is called Nuthin Less produced by me, Don P. I produced two or three tracks on the CD and rest was of course produced by the Producer of the Year Lil Jon.

SOHH.COM:
Will the TVT Records situation affect Trillville at all?

TRILLVILLE:
Not at all, we signed to BME/Warner so we not affected at all.

SOHH.COM:
Lately you've been working with E-40 on several tracks, how did that partnership come about?

TRILLVILLE:
We used to see him around Atlanta alot and one day he came into the studio while we were recording the Reloaded album and he just decided to get on a track with us. He did something with BoHagen too so he's just part of the BME family and you'll hear alot more from E-40 and BME.

SOHH.COM:
Who were some of the Trillville musical influences before you got on?

TRILLVILLE:
Well growing up in the A alot of our influences were some of the local cats around here. But on a national level definitely UGK [Free Pimp C], The whole Trill thing we got from Bun B and Pimp C so big shot out to them. Also, shots out to Three 6 Mafia and Eightball & MJG.

SOHH.COM:
Along those same lines, what is Trillville riding to these days?

TRILLVILLE:
Mostly us, Target Practice, Trilltown Mafia and The Reloaded joint, but you know we got our on radio show now and Trilltown.com is what we mainly listening too. But as far as outside people we on that Lil' Webbie and Three 6 Mafia.

SOHH.COM
So what's up with the Lil Scrappy beef and has all of that been cleared up?

TRILLVILLE:
Yeah the Scrappy situation is resolved, it was just a friendly competition thing. He put his mixtape out and I put out mine but we good now.

SOH.COM:
Finally, what's on the immediate up and up for Trillville?

TRILLVILLE:
All the fans can hit us up on our CRUNK-LINE # at (678) 438-3138, all the fans can hit us up and leave messages and get on the radio or whatever. Make sure all the fans check us out on Trilltown radio too, we give away T-shirts, CD's and posters so all the fans can find out what we doing right there. Also, we up for a Southern Entertainment Award for Best Cover so everybody go online and vote for us on that website.

Critics Give Bow Wow And Roll Bounce A Thumbs Down

rollbounce.jpg

"The jokes on What's Happening!! were funnier. The jokes on Fat Albert were funnier. Even the jokes on Dixie Cups were funnier." - New York Post

"...Roll Bounce has heart and good vibes but little else to recommend it." - NY Times

"Mildly entertaining and occasionally funny, but too often a roller skating movie that falls -- sometimes fairly hard." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Harsh reviews but I thought the movie was decent myself, I didn't go into it expecting an Oscar-type performance so it was straight to me. I think the critics come down hard on anything hip-hop related. They usually show us minimal love if any.

You can check out a clip here.

Usher Pulls Off Successful Benefit Concert Over The Weekend

usher.jpg

Usher pulled off a real nice benefit concert over the weekend for the Hurricane Katrina and Rita victims. But you already know, when it comes to Usher you expect nothing less, he's arguably the greatest performer of our era. I mean ya' boy brought out the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, what more can you say. Alicia Keys also came through and represented big with Usher.

On the hip hop tip, Jeezy, T.I., Youngbloods, JD and Franchise all showed up doin' it big on stage. Big up.

T.I. was decent although I've seen him rock a show 10x harder than he did but he just needs some new material. I think people are just burned out on the Urban Legend joints. And the PSC CD, well I don't even count that. But overall the concert was straight, respect due Usher for representin' for the hurricane victims when many haven't (see Michael Jackson).

KIller Mike In Concert Tonight at 112

I'm On It...I'm On It..I'm On It! I officially declare this Killer Mike and Purple Ribbon Day in the A. Killer and the rest of the click will be on stage at Club 112 tonight.
300px-Killer_mike.jpg
As Killer Mike's release date approaches the buzz sorrounding him is increasing big time. He teased us with "My Chrome" the first single from Ghetto Extraordinary now the hope is that the wait is over. It's time to drop, we've waited long enough for the follow-up to his debut CD Monster.

The Purple Ribbon album is scheduled to drop later this month following the huge success of the first single off the album "Kryptonite".

This should be a breakout year for Killer, it's time for him to get the respect that he so rightfully deserves. Hopefully, he performs some of his material from the new album just to give us a sneak preview of what's to come.

BET's In Town Looking For Fresh Faces...How About Some Fresh Ideas?

Yo first off, say what you will about Young Jeezy as an artist, all I know is...Snowman knows how to throw a birthday bash. Visions was crazy last night, wall to wall pressure. DJ Infamous held it down real nice on the wheels too.

With that said, Club 112 was flooded with people hoping to become new on-air personalities at BET . I mean people spent the night on the concrete, some even migrated sirectly from Visions (lackluster hygiene and all).

C'monComic Ciew 2 or 3 times a day, Ultimate Hustler, Midnight Love etc... are all decent shows but they won't push a network over the edge in today's society.

We shouldn't have to copy ideas from MTV, the last time I checked, black folk' were the ones usually being copied from, so what happened? Also, haven't black actors and actresses done enough movies over the past century to where we shouldn't have to repeat flicks every other month.

Will we ever get another black station to rival BET and provide us an alternative. Hasn't 25 years been long enough? BET needs a self-check or either we need to check 'em!

Luda Now Aiming For #1 Spot On XM Radio

Ludacris2_.jpg

Ludacris has signed a deal to host a weekly show exclusive for XM radio, the nation's largest satellite radio service. The show will be called "Disturbing The Peace Presents Ludacris' Open Mic". The show will debut in January 2006 on XM’s uncut hip-hop channel RAW (XM channel 66).

Luda has the on-air experience having started his career as a DJ here in the "A" so I anticicipate the show will be fire. I've heard him on the radio and just as he does on a track, he has that uncanny ability to amp up anything he's on. If Luda can't get it hyped I don't know who can.

XM is turning into the new voice of music. How long will AM/FM last you have to wonder, is this the new face of radio? We do know this, Luda will definitely bring the nations ear closer to the Atlanta music scene. Now other areas will be able to hear the "lyrical" side of Atlanta to go along with the heavy dose of crunk that everybody associates with us.

Also, Ludacris will be appearing on the Oprah Winfrey show on Thursday Oct. 6th.

Manufacturer Puts The Freeze On Jeezy's Snowman T-Shirts

Just when you thought everything Young Jeezy touched would turn to gold, we find out that the original manufacturer of the Snowman T-Shirt clothing line actually had some morals and ceased production because of the suggested cocaine affiliation of the emblem.

snowman.jpg

Yaniv Zaken, owner of hip-hop fashion line Miskeen Originals, the original producer of the Snowman shirts was originally in the dark as to what the moniker meant but once the meaning surfaced, Zaken took a stance. After Zaken learned of the connection the snowman image had to hustling, he had to consider the implications for his business. So, recently he decided to simply halt production.

What does Sir Jeezy say to all of this? "You gotta understand what it symbolizes," he explained. "It symbolizes a young hustler. If a cat goes and gets fresh, hits the club or goes to an event and he has a Snowman shirt on, it's almost like a white tee. You can throw on a white tee and G your way through the party. You might have a Snowman shirt on and it's all good. Everybody can't afford the Gucci and everything. It's the next best thing, the Snowman."

Jeezy shirts are going for about $70 unless you get it bootleg or flea market. The setback really hasn't stopped Jeezy at all, word is there's a Rocawear deal already on the table.

Also, get to Visions on Tuesday for Jeezy's All-Black affair where I'm sure there will be plenty of Snowman shirts to go around.
