Is Gorilla Zoe Getting "Lost" on Traditional Radio?

In an era where the entire music industry is trying to figure out how to use the internet to work for them rather than against them, a new blog article has emerged. Block ENT's Gorilla Zoe is gearing up for the release of his Sophomore album Don't Feed The Animals. And while his current single "Lost" is getting all kind of internet buzz, it seems that the radio charts don't reflect the internet luv.

Well, analyst John Robinson breaks down how radio is lost on Zoe's dope record.

On the net, there's no doubt that rapper Gorilla Zoe's "Lost" is a smash.  The song has been played more than 40 million times on MySpace, and has clocked more than 2.5 million downloads on P2P.  BigChampagne, tracking the action, ranks "Lost" at number 22 on its Urban TopSwaps chart, a quick move from 37.  The song is the 6th-quickest mover this week, according to the data.

That represents phenomenal growth, yet "Lost" has only a handful of traditional radio spins.  So why isn't Urban radio all over this record?  The song, an introspective ballad that cuts against the grain of overflowing Cristal and flossy bravado, is a bit unusual for the format.  Whatever the reason, programmers are stopping short of top 25 or even top 50 rotation.

But format-friendly or not, fans are now boosting the song - with or without traditional radio involvement.  Whether "Lost" fits the current definition of Urban "stationality" appears a major issue for Urban PDs, though radio stations risk becoming late-movers on a song with major mass appeal. John makes an interesting point. Why is that so many records that get millions of hits online never seem to make it to the radio? Program Directors seem to be losing their "touch" when it comes to giving their listeners a diverse amount of music that correctly reflects the tone of the music scene.

Artists like Asher Roth, B.O.B., Gorilla Zoe & others are internet stars, so why isn't radio echoing it?

Just something to think about.

Gorilla Zoe is gay. Seriously. Nothing out of the ordinary these days anyway though. The industry is turning them out left and right.
