Am I the only one who is still on cloud nine?
I don't know about you, but I am still reeling from yesterday's
historic moment.
African-American Senator Barack Obama has etched a
place for himself in history as he became the first black man to win
the election as this great nations next President of the United States.
But the thing, for me, that adds another layer of respect to President
Obama and his campaign was the way they utilized new media to reach all
the young people.
Obama and his team made their political views readily available. Instantly people were able to check their PDA's and get all the information for their candidates, which was a strong appeal.
It's estimated that this years election brought out 14 million extra
voters and I think it's safe to say that most of those
newly registered voters were young people. In fact, The New York Times exit polls showed that 66% of young voters ages 18-29 voted for President Obama.
The Obama team understood and made their online presence just as much of a priority as their non Internet campaign.
President Obama's site [barackobama.com] has reportedly logged
over seven-million people. And these people didn't just log on to the
site, but they entered their email addresses which allowed everyone to
recieve timely updates on everything Barack Obama.
According to the Boston Globe, the Internet has accelerated the trend, giving young people a cheap and
efficient tool to organize rallies, recruit volunteers and exchange
information about candidates. With passions high over the war, national
security, and global warming, young people today are shaping up as a
political power bloc that could exceed the influence of ant-iwar
protesters in the late 1960s and early 1970s, pollsters and analysts
predict.
$600 million is the estimated amount believed to be have been
raised through our new President's entire campaign. While I am the
biggest champion of New Media, even I wasn't aware of just how powerful
the internet can be.
Barack Obama isn't just making history as becoming the first black
President, he's also the first President to bring into
office a well-established and connected audience that he can reach out
to at a moments notice.
SOHH for any of you who think that the Internet doesn't have a strong impact, look at Barack Obama.
I feel very confident in saying that the Internet played an instrumental role in this historic moment.
You record labels, and major artists need to get with the program. It's a new day!
