Is Lil' Wayne Ruining His Brand By Hopping On Every Rap Song On Earth? + Blogging Lesson Of The Day!

I was having a discussion yesterday about Lil' Wayne and I was SOHH blown away by my argument that I decided to bring it to you guys.

The argument that ensued between me and my friend, and apparent number-one fan to Wayne, was over the notion that the self-proclaimed "greatest rapper alive" is ruining his brand by hopping on every song.

Weezy's rise to rap success wasn't an overnight fairytale, the brutha put in work. However, this recent year Wayne's brand has risen to its ultimate height.

He sold a million albums in his first week of Tha Carter III, he's amassed numerous awards including an MTV Video Music Award, multiple BET Hip-Hop Awards, etc. And is being featured by virtually everyone.

To date here are a few of Wayne's features

Akon - "I'm Paid"
Gorilla Zoe - "Lost"
Cassie - "Official Girl"
Keri Hilson - "Turn Off"
T.I. - "Swagger Like Us"

I think you get the point. He's got a new featured blog on ESPN and continues to book shows all through out the world. And while his success is encouraging for hip-hop, I can't help, but think that Wayne is killing is brand in his attempt to capitalize off of his success.

It's my belief that If Wayne continues to over saturate his brand, that he essentially will lose his value. Again, in my opinion Wayne should begin to consider his brand then simply the zero's on the check.

But my friend disagreed with me. According to him, Wayne is doing it right. My friend, who I'm going to assume thinks a lot of like Wayne's fans, can't get enough from the "Martian." It seems that Wayne could drop a new song everyday and he'd be right there, with cash in hand, ready to purchase it.

What do you all think, is Wayne simply doing too much? Or am I just hatin'??

Oh And One More Thing...

Blogging Lesson Of The Day: If you do not invite a blogger to your video shoot, then please don't waste your time sending them pictures. I can guarantee you that most bloggers won't post them.

I'm not going to be mentioning any names. I just felt compelled to put that out there. It's a new day in the game.

Some of you record executives fly certain bloggers all over the world for coverage, but treat a lot of other bloggers like red-headed step children - yet claim it's all luv.

 It's a new day, people.

Talk to y'all lata,

Lil Wayne is overrated no matter what songs he does or does not hop on. His lyrics are overly simple and his voice is intolerable. Calling him unique isn't necessarily a compliment. It's disgusting that some people feel he really has a place being mentioned among the best in hip-hop. I would imagine that most people saying that are 15 year old females but to anybody over that age, you know nothing of the hip-hop so many of us love.

I think Lil Wayne is way overrated the Carter 2 was much better than the Carter 3. Jay-Z will always be the best rapper alive. Lil Wayne needs help he needs to check into rehab or something those piercings are not cute. I'm not a hater I just thinks he's oversaturating himself by being on every single.

Wayne is the shit. fuck what yall haterz think. obviously he is doin somethin right bc every kid in middle and high school know atleast one of his songs. he got stacks on deck and he aint dancin his way thru like some of the other artist today. and yea jay z is good but wayne is wanted. everybody in the world wants wayne on their track. wayne brings money, LOTS of it. he is the best in the business today and one of the greatest of all time. fuck tha haterz. keep murderin them bitches wayne!!!

Ah..Jeremy Allan.. The name says it all. White kids love lil Wayne especially the white kids who rock skinny jeans and Aviator shades, while listening to Fallout boy or some shit like that. Dumb ass high school and middle school kids love wayne because he's all over MTV and BET. If he wasnt getting any promo, people would stop giving a shit about him. Ghostface Killah is 100x better then wayne and Jay-Z combined, hell i could name 10 artists off the top of my head that are better than them. You bloggers need to quit posting this lil wayne bullshit and start posting about artists that actually put their heart and soul into Hip-Hop. FUCK LIL WAYNE, hes an overrated piece of shit that bit his style from all the other MTV artists and passes it off as his own.

do lyrics no longer matter? wayne has yet to put out a song that's made me wanna hit rewind. to say that his lyrics are of elementary level is being complimentary. remember when mc's had something to say? they didn't just rhyme words for the sake of rhyming them.
whenever someone tells me "well look at how many records his selling". i always point them to vanilla ice and all the millions he sold. album sales don't determine how great an artist is. that just means he has a better marketing gimmick.

I don't get why people are hating so much these days. If Wayne wasn't the hottest thing right now and just simply doing him, yall wouldn't give a shit.

What is real Hip Hop? Music that started way back? Underground? No such thing mate. Don't get me wrong, i think the greatest in the game are guys like KRS, B.I.G or Cube but i don't see why Wayne can't be eventually mentioned?

How do you define greatness in Hip Hop?

I think wayne was doing the right thing at first to make him what he is today, but now nigga is hot and he did wat he did in one week he needs to make niggas want more by not coming out as much. He reminds me of ja rule wen he was hitting niggas with hits everyone wanted him on there track then niggas got to much of him and 50 helped to, cuz he was up and coming and something new now look at ja niggas dont even think about him no more but wayne gotta to it right or hes just going to end up just another good rapper that came and left

Wow. Just wow.

{{-_-}}

It took you this long to figure this out !! Pleeeeze!!

I think wayne is fucking the rap game up a lil bit by being on everybody shit, Don't get me wrong the nigga can spit but most off his best verses come on other people shit, The carter III was ok he only has 4 or 5 good songs to me on there , The only way can truly be the best is if he can put out a high quality album that U can bang out all the way through, Hov and T.I. put out banging albums, Wayne puts out singles, Yea the nigga sold a million the fisrt week but since then he hasent sold anything, check the soundscan homie until wayne puts out a high quality album that U can bang out all the way through, He wont be the best, The best in the game is T.I. and Hov homie

I thought Wayne was hot when the Carter 2 dropped. But now, his career is similar to those of Ja Rule and 50 Cent. I mean come on, he's singing on a track with T Pain! I rarely listen to commercial artist as I'm really picky with my music, but people really need to LISTEN to the music rather than just HEAR it. Just my 2 cents...

WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT, THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS TO ARTISTS IS SELLING RECORDS. JAY MAY BE MORE LYRICAL AND DNT PUT AS NEAR AS MUCH MATERIAL AS WAYNE DO BUT JAY AIN'T SELLING A MILLION IN THE FIRST WEEK. YOU THINK WAYNE CARES IF HIS LYRICS DNT MAKE SENSE AND IF HE MIGHT PUT OUT TO MUCH. HE'S BEEN FOLLOWING THAT FORMULA FOR A WHILE NOW AND IT SEEMS THAT THAT FORMULA IS BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE'S RIGHT NOW CAUSE HE'S THE HOTTEST OUT. AS MUCH AS HE SAYS HE'S THE BEST RAPPER ALIVE IT'S MORE LIKE HE'S THE BEST ENTERTAINER. HE DNT RAP TO BE LYRICAL HE RAPS TO ENTERTAIN AND THATS WAT SELL RECORDS

I'm not going to jump on here and insult anyone... lets just get straight to it. The question is "Is Lil Wayne hurting his career and Status by saturating the industry with features, songs and verses. Well, we really cant tell now, but lets look into the past. (I'm not directly comparing skills here). When Nelly came out, people couldn't get enough of him - well as far as album sales (Noted, people were still copping CDs then). But then he cooled off after his third album, which by the way didn't do as well by Nellys standards. When he tried to come back with brass knuckles, he was so out of place, that no one paid him any attention. So i seems that Lil Wayne is keeping himself relevant, on the edge and on the frontier of the evolving state of hip hop. people complain about him singing and all that. But u have to realize, this is what puts food on the table for him. He can stay out there and only try to prove his lyrical genius, but what would that fetch him in terms of dollars - nothing. The guy who mentioned Ghost face was speaking the truth., n ut we know how fans do - Ghost face is ill, but is he banking - if he is, not like weezy. Weezy has proven time and again that he spits tight.... if he feels the need to put food on the table by doing what he does, then he cant be knocked for that. U cant always be one dimensional. Stay hardcore, and u'll see no cake (Ghost Face), stay totally commercial and u'll loose all respect and eventually cake (Nelly).
Now, look at 50 who saturated the industry with all that G-Unit stuff. Although other factors like arrogance and beef and a disorganized unit added to his demise - he has become way less relevant than he once was. That can be blamed on the over-saturation. He over saturated the industry without embracing the change and making it work for him.

In conclusion, Lil Wayne is not hurting his career or stance by doing what he's doing because he's not just saturating the industry, but he is actually evolving with it, which is why it feels like his material is fresh or at least keeps you on the edge.

Don't kill the messenger, its my educated opinion. And this is coming from someone who didn't accept Weezy's skills until very recently (Right before Carter III dropped.
And i do agree that Carter III sales do not match up to content. Carter II deserved more in sales if we relate it to content.

I don't think you're hating (for once) I think you're just going off of history and how you personally feel. cause when weezy first started being on everything a lil over two years ago people would say he was over doing it and would burn out. Last year when he was still doing everyones tracks instead of droping the Carter III people said that he was oversauturating himself and The Carter III wont sell as much cause people will be tired of him by the time it comes out. This Year when he kept pushing The album back and was STILL being on everything he could people were saying his album wont sell cause he needs to focus on it instead of doing tracks with everybody else. And we all know how the record sold. And even after (I remember two days after there were new joints from him on the net) when he was still doing joints wit everybody people said "his albums out he did good he should just fall back for a while" and every day when there's a new joint featuring him on the net that song always gets the most hits. And your assumption was right on my part. Im 24 and I'm a big hip-hop fan I would love for you people to see my playlist and the insane range of artist i have. but because weezy is droping music so often its fun to see everyday if there's something new.

People act like weez is hot because of lollipop. People act like weez is hot because he gets on everybodies track. People act like weez is hot because he sold a millie in the first week ect. He is not a new artist everybody. He did not just get hot either. His very first album is platinum, His second album is platinum. His third sold like 750,00 and the carters on 1x 2x plat. As for the spitting He has dropped hot verses He has classic mixtapes and his last three albums were usually in the top 5 for their respective years. If weezy is wack as yall all say then why is everybody still asking him to be on their records and I mean major artist GUYS that you all restpect mind you. Oh you might say cause he sells. Well solja boys sells and I'm pretty sure we won't see him on a track wit Jay-z, Busta Rymes, Talib, Fab, Kanye I could go on. There are lots of artist who sell and they don't get requests to be on everyones tracks and they aren't considerd to be great rappers.

In The end I don't really care how you feel bout dude but It just gets me when people say he's arguably the best cause cause he sold or just cause he's on mad tracks cause thats just not why, Dude can spit and put out good material. And hopefully from what I've been hearing the last few weeks he is going back to his raw style and has retired the vocorder (at least for the verses)
