Young Jeezy Teams Up With Kanye West , But Was It A Good Idea?

Posted on May 5, 2008 10:01 AM

jeezykanye.jpg

Here I was riding my high with Tip's new record "No Matter What" and then Jeezy had to come along and f*ck up my buzz.

Let me first start off by saying that I for one have been craving new music from the lights of Def Jam/CTE star Young Jeezy. Every time I would see him or any CTE staffers I would inquire about it, but they would all coyly say that it's "coming soon". However after just listening to the Drumma Boy produced track [I stand corrected] I got to say that I'm not impressed.

I strongly feel that in today's ultra finicky music business you got to come out the gate with a BANGER. I'm talking something that can knock all the haterz off their feet. This song doesn't even make me wobbly in the knees. It's a great filler track for the album, but not a good enough lead single to let everyone know that "I'm back bitches".

This song is more like "ehhhh I'm back...if you care." Where's the versatility? I feel like I've heard this track a million times before. Is it too much to ask to be blown away in amazement? I hate to compare, but T.I. did it, and seeing that SOHH many people put Clifford and Jay in the same category I know he can do it too.

And what's with Kanye trying to steal.....er, borrow, T-Pain's vocoder style? That sh*t can only work for one artist at a time per decade.

What do you all think? Are you all hearing something I don't?

[Download Song Here]

To my CTE staffers I love ya! It's just my opinion. Shouts to Randy Roper at Writersblock for sending me over the track.

Talk to y'all lata,

  • Don't worry homey, Jeezy gonna come with that fire. Even in this song he still rippin it. But I gotta agree with you, it feels like I've heard this track a 1000 times. I expected a more melancholic tune from Kanye, but, this track is still pretty good. Just not, like you say, blow me away amazing.

  • Now Gyant you my dude but Ur wrong on this one. I was actually wating for you to post a blog about this song. This joint is ill as fuck. Jeezy did his thing, & maybe i'm biased since Kanye's my fav. rapper, but he killed it too and I like his flow with the use of Auto-tune. I've had this on repeat for the past hour and a half. But I agree that this may not be that "not good enough lead single to let everyone know that "I'm back bitches". But i'm feeling this, its catchy and everybody will remember and will be saying the hook, "I put on for my city/On-on for my city"

  • common thaht straight up hater talk ... now because of the internet everybody thinks the own a record label and say what they think about lead single... common what we want is good music ( no pun intended) is the beat good or not thaht it people like good music from the heart and on this beat Kanye give it ... as for the T-pain i guess everybody is jacking thaht style ... snopp, 50, wayne and now kanye ... it works for me and to compare that with TIP coomon we all know thaht beat is not going to have a video and thaht is just to get people talking ... im bumping thaht Jeezy and just wait 3 weeks i bet you will change idea ...

  • May 3, 2008 12:52 AM
  • Lacking says...
  • Yea you right about this one...Beat is lacking something serious. I'm assuming that this is just a throwout/street single to warm us up for the REAL single. And seriously, lets keep Kanye seperated from Jeezy...Kanye dont have no place being on this type of record whatsoever.

  • May 3, 2008 12:54 AM
  • Chris "Mundelz" says...
  • This joint is pretty hot. Maybe not fire but still quite dope. It's not like Jeezy really needs to put out a smash hit, he has a deep core fanbase that will flock to his music. You might want to let it grow on you... I wasn't feelin "I Luv it" but after several listens I realized. But I'm fuckin wit this joint off the break.

  • This aint a banger but i can f***s with it but look at his albums he came out with "And Then What" but Soul Survivor took him off, then "I Luv It" was ok but "Go Getta" was the anthem, not to mention Jeezy has launched himself into superstar status already and he's everywhere right now,his buzz is hot and his next album is goin plat anyway just cuz its Jeezy

    TI
    Jeezy
    Luda

  • Just to clear up the confusion for everyone, there's a difference between a "vocoder" and the "auto-tune." The auto-tune is what all these artists now are using, especially those that are tone deaf. A vocoder you need a musical instrument as the carrier, for example singing into a mic and playing a keyboard at the same time, w/ the keyboard sound projecting your voice.

  • May 4, 2008 1:48 PM
  • The_Truth says...
  • The vocoder is made to give a non-singer a manufactured "pitch". . .now imaging Kanye singing without the vocoder. . .it'd be a joke.

    Understand before you hate.

  • You are crazy as hell!!!! This is a certified BANGER!! Young Jizzle is never the most lyrical but he always has your head noddin on the track. I personally liked Kanye's use of the vocoder, people are trying different ish and making it sound good why should we care?? People have forgot how to listen to music. The critics are so damn tough out the gate that the song literally has no time to resonate with the people before someone like you is like "oh it's trash" Let the PEOPLE decide and from the looks of this blog GYANT you SHOULD NOT BE JUDGING MUSIC. STICK TO WHAT YOU DO AND THAT'S BLOG. If everyone like you and the rest of the media weren't so critical and unhappy with themselves, we could have a more thriving scene with the new sounds, styles, and horizons. I guess I'm saying this to say QUIT HATING EVERYDAY OF YOUR LIFE DUDE. SERIOUSLY!!!! No hard feelings, I just call it how i see it....holla!!!

  • I like it. It seems like Jeezy is trying to make his music sound more universal without losing that D-boy edge, kinda how T.I. did with Do It.

And Kanye used a vocoder or auto-tune on Workout Plan on his first album. T-Pain didn't invent or start any trends. Artists have been using it. Devin The Dude used it on his album II Da Extreme a few years back before anyone ever heard of T-Pain.

  • I first heard this song Friday evening on the radio, man I turned it up immediately. Jeezy got that swagger and that raspy voice killing em every time (especially me) Then I heard it at least 3 or 4 times in the strip club and the girls went crazy. Its a plus that Kanye is on the track because their styles are so different so its a good mix. I believe since Gyant is not a true ATLien he does not appreciate our style of music so he really is not a fair critic of it. We need a real Grady Baby to run this blog right.
