Last night I got a complimentary ticket from the Purple Ribbon camp to come check out Big Boi’s theater debut.
The Atlanta Fox Theater was where one half of Outkast took to the stage to elevate hip-hop to the next level. I’m not even going to front, I went to this event expecting to hate it. I mean, I know pop culture tries to incorporate hip-hop into almost everything these days, but I just didn’t see how something as technical and elegant as ballet would mix with hard, edgy rap music. But the minute the curtain rose and the Outkast catalog took over, I’ll be dammed if I wasn’t staring at everyone in complete awe.
Now I don’t know too much about ballet dancing, so I am not going to begin to try and break down exactly what I took in visually. Thanks to my camera I won’t even have to go there. Just check it out for yourself.
I got to say that Janelle Monae stole the damn show. I mean Big Boi most certainly did his thing, and the dancers were great. But something about her awkward movements, and soulful voice just had me captivated.
All in all I got to give EVERYBODY their props. This is a show you got to check out for yourself. You got two more days to get your chance to see Antwan Patton, and the Purple Ribbon crew get their culture on. For ticket information click here.
Big Shout out to Tamiko for the hook up.
Talk to y’all lata,

First, or not.
OK EVERYTHING WAS LOVELY...EXCEPT...WHY WAS BIG BOI DRESSED LIKE HE WAS AT STUDIO 72 OR THE BOOM BOOM ROOM??? I MEAN COME ON...EVERYONE ELSE LOOKED DRESSED FOR THE OCCASION EXCEPT HIM. PUTTING ON A NICE CLEAN CREAM SUIT WOULD HAVE KILLED U BIG BOI?
I don't see what the big deal about this whole thing is..All it is,is a big boi concert with some ballet dancing in the background..Big Deal..I could see if he was rappin over some classical shit, while the dancers were dancing to it..There were no costumes or anything..Not sayin he should be in a tutu, but damn..
12 12
yoooo....i heard big boi was suppose to perform the first single off his single...did it happen?
janelle monae did do one than one song, right? and any signs 3 stacks was present? fill us in...
as far as the uncultured comments...outkast is not only one of hip-hop's greatest pioneers, but they also helped in keeping hip-hop alive.
its ashame so many people want to continue living in their small little of watered down trap music. Shawty-Lo???....garbage. Even Rick Ross sold out. Real bosses in the drug game are white, sitting down at home in a huge house, with wife and kids, not even seeing the product. Real bosses are not in the street, in the trap. Like Outkast said many times...the trap is what it is...a trap.
thanks for the footage. hopefully, you'll have more to share....
Damn, I can't believe I used to listen to this cat. The ballet seemed out of sync with the raps... I was expecting something more live than this--this sucks, mang. Bunch Farnsworth Bentley ass niggaz...

i like big boi, i adore janelle monae (her part was awesome), sleepy brown was smooth and sexy per usual (where's he been yall??!!) BUT i don't think this went well together. GREAT concept however the outcome doesn't mesh well to me. to me the fast, hard rap music and the slow soft ballet moves didn't gel. but maybe if i was there i'd see it differently. i had to go to school so i missed this but i've heard mixed reviews from those that did attend. but i bet the afterparty was hot!
I guess I had to be there. From that video, it looked confusing as hell on that stage. I have to give it to them for trying something different. They should have had Big Boi off to the side, while the dancers were on the stage.
being at the show and looking at this footage were two separate experiences. this footage, to be expected with a consumer-grade camera, has poor sound quality and only pulls in certain sounds - can't hear the full band, vocals crappy and out of sync. -- the experience at the show was something else. on point. vocals strong. band sensational. so everyone basing their comments on how bad, out of sync this video is need to go see for yourself. and all those niggaz talking bout how stupid it is mixing ballet and "i can't believe i used to listen to this cat" shit need to have more forward thinking and not be stuck in your tunnel vision world - branch out and be less pessimistic -- and yes, he played the new single and it was the best, for me, part of the show, both in hearing a new song and the choreography.
srry but da ballet was horrible, especially the men. did they eva practice together??
@ SQUEEZE THESE
I'm a squeeze my verbal trigger at your bitch ass and put a leak in the side of your thought process, nigga. I don't need to be more forward thinking, I've taken this White Nigga Movement worldwide, and my shit is on the cutting edge of neo-social identification. Who the fuck are you? Yeah, you'z just a bitch ass responding to what I wrote, so allow me to retort. I know I can only speak for the White Niggaz, but I like my hip-hop to sound like...well, hip hop. I don't like niggaz singing hooks, niggaz that make beats in 3 minutes, niggaz jumpin on some coonery bandwagon and making stupid movies, or niggaz trying to make everything that's not hip-hop into hip-hop. When I feel like going up in some ballerinas, I rent a private box, and bring my spectacles and a box of condoms. When I want to hear some real hip-hop, I might throw on some pre-double-disc Outkast. Now each one on its own is a satisfactory experience, but you ever tried mixing crab legs with chianti, nigga? That's a fuck-up waiting to happen. I don't have to think progressive about my entertainment. I don't care how hard a nigga thinks he is. Once he dons the tutu and starts twiddling his toes--I'm not sticking around to see if he's bumping Beethoven or Big Boi--I'm dipping out that bitch. That shit don't appeal to me at all, and if it appeals to you...well, then you're looking real suspect right now, homey. Might just wanna dip out the side door onto Ponce before a White Nigga pulls a John Wilkes Booth and assassinates your ass up in the balcony...

I really enjoyed the show...A bit suprised that the idea of ballet and hip hop could mix...
A few weird moments but overall I give the show 2 guns up!!!!
Very good thing for hip hop...watch someone from up top will steal this idea and take it to broadway within a year...
Let me throw my two cents in...
A friend of mines had an extra ticket so I got a chance to attend. I didn't know what to expect at all and I have to say I was impressed. Like "Squeeze These" said, being at the show was a TOTALLY different experience than the clip. It sounded amazing, and yes, the new single is a heater! Gotta give mad props to Janelle Monae! Her music and her performance was the highlight of the show for me!
Honestly, one of the best things that I saw was how mixed the audience was. You had people there to see Big and you had fans of the Atlanta Ballet. I think both crowds got a chance to experience something new...When Purple Ribbon performed "Kryptonite" that might have been a bit much (lol) but they did it quite well. If 3 stacks would've shown up, that would've been icing on the cake, but hey, you cant get everything you want!
All in all, much respect to both Big and the Atlanta Ballet for giving all of us in the "A" a new experience we wont easily forget!
