For years Radio One and CBS radio have been battling for the top spot in the urban market. As many of you know Atlanta has two hip-hop stations. V103, and HOT 107.9. They both pretty much cater to the same demographic, and play virtually the same music although Hot does get a little more hood. But there is a new system that’s coming to town that aimed at closing one of the stations down.
The new Arbitron ratings system will take effect, if it hasn’t already. This new procedure called the Portable People Meter, basically will monitor exactly who people are listening to by calculating radio waves taken from a monitoring device attached to a persons belt. This apparently has radio programmers pulling their hair out. The argument being made is that there won’t be enough volunteers wearing portable meters in urban areas which could ultimately affect the authenticity of radio ratings. The PPM system is already in place in major markets such as LA, Houston, Philadelphia and New York. Stations that were once riding high on the Arbitron charts saw their ratings take a nose dive.
Although things may look calm on the surface here in Atlanta as it relates to the urban radio scene don’t be fooled. Because behind the scenes there’s extreme panic as its common knowledge in the industry that Atlanta’s people station V103, or Hot 107.9 will be no longer by years end. Both sides are stead fast in assuming the other will go, but only time will tell.
And I know damn well there is a panic because my sources on both end who give me all kind of good information on the home front have chosen to remain mum on this topic. SOHH I know it’s serious.

That's messed up. However, most people I know do not listen to the radio. Secondly, the radio really doesn't determine what's hot in the streets as hip-hop goes anymore. The radio all sounds the same, that's why ratings are down and are going to stay down. In the 90's, radio was more regional. So, people on the east coast heard more east coast music, south heard more southern artists and the west coast heard more west coast artist. now, it's corporate, and they tryin to consolidate the music. they think that all of us black folk across the country listen to the same shit. U can't force a regions music on the whole nation and expect it to catch on all or even most of the time. Anyways, it's unfortuante that they tryin to kill urban radio in Atlanta. It's just another way of sayin hip-hop is dead.

I got a trunk full of CDs, a mp3 player with all the CDs' tracks on it, and a radio in the whip that plays either any of the above, or satellite radio. When I'm in the office, I use my phone with the mp3 player on it and Bluetooth my jams right to my headset. Don't even have to take my shit off when I'm up in the secretary...

This sounds like an urban myth or a misrepresentation of facts. It doesn't make sense that a station would be closed down because it's not the number one station in a market. Those stations cater to simillar markets, not identical markets. And those numbers vary through the course of the year.
FRANK SKI AND WANDA AND THAT OTHER FAT BITCH ARE SO DAMN ANNOYING, I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THEM. but, we do need at LEAST 3 (95.5 for all the white niggas) stations, they wont ever get rid of 107 AND 103, it won't happen, so Gyant, SUCK A BIG NERVOUS DICK!!

Who will volunteer and has time to wear those devices and why dont the radio stations find a flaw in this technology and the variables that go into how it determines ratings. Im feeling having two urban radio stations to choose from anyway...
Both radio stations support stereotypes that have been put on us by other demographics. I'm glad that, finally, these radio stations are being filtered out of the public; a place where most children don't have a say what they are being exposed to.
yeah this is late news....anyways everyone is acting all nonchalant about it, but this is the government trying to control what we listen to and our freedom and if you think for any minute that that's not the underlying effect, then once our country starts falling apart you will see, everything isnt all good!
