i hear you but you may be missing the point. State charges aside, those alleged crimes are by far worse thank those M. Vick faces with far lenghter jail sentences. Vick is taking the worst beating (no pun intended) of any athlete for crimes perpetrated against non-humans.

However, I am not naive enough to believe that dog fights do not take place, and that there isn't a segment of our population that engages in such acts with a form of pride. If you are surprised that a major personality is involved in this activity, then you are simply not in tune with certain parts of american culture. As a matter of fact, the only thing that surprises me, is that it has taken this long for someone of such noriety to be linked to this type of activity.
While stating all of this, I am not convinced of Vick's innocence or guilt. That is what the courts are for. Sorry peta supporters, but I am not one to automatically believe that federal indictments contain the truth and absolutely nothing but the truth.
Which brings me to two people who I have lost a tremendous amount of respect for over the last couple of weeks. Those two being Russell Simmons and Al Sharpton. I must state that i don't believe that this is as much of a race issue as people are trying to make it out to be. I believe that the prosecution is so overzealous in the pursuit of this case, not due to race, but instead due to the celebrity status of Michael Vick. They now have a face for their crusade against cruelty to animals. However, my dissappointment in Mr. Sharpton and Mr. Simmons, as prominent african-american members in America , could not be more overstated. I respect all that Mr. Sharpton has done with the advancement of civil rights, and Mr. Simmons for his contributions to popular culture and urban America. However, in the pursuit of an ever dimming spotlight for both, they dropped the ball on this one. No, this is not about race, but as black men they should know that no matter what the government says, you just can never be sure. With everthing else going on in the world, why was this an issue for them to decide to make their opinion so vocal? The only answer I have is it put a light on them again, if even for a second.
I know that we are an animal (especially dog) loving society. But people who are comparing this to issues such as murder, rape, and kidnapping of HUMANS is simply amazing! A few weeks ago, two ex-cons, broke into a house and murdered a family ( http://policelink.com/news/articles/2947-enough-is-enough-two-more-felons-murder-innocent-family-on-early-release-what-is-your-opinion-on-this). There is a girl, Stepha Henry, missing in Florida after attending spring break of which it seems as though no attention, media-wise, is being given http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2007/06/you_still_dont_.html. But Michael Vick is the issue that some people want to wage a crusade against. Are you serious? We have young men and women dying everyday in a war that has already taken over 3,500 lives. But the issue that has America in a chokehold is Michael Vick? I can't believe that is what our society has come to. For two weeks after the indictment, I heard stories on Mr. Vick at least 5 times a day. Simply ridiculous. There are more pertinent issues for us to stand up for or against people! As stated earlier,I too am a dog lover. But i am not one who believes that dogs are human. Yes the things stated in the indictment against Michael Vick are somewhat horrifying, but nowhere near the injustices that are done to people all over the world everyday. To dispise and ridicule Michael Vick as most of America has, is to me, unbelieveable. How do you diffrentiate between dog fighting and hunting deer? There are people who want pit bulls banned as pets anyway because they are believed to be vicious animals. So why are we not as aggitated by those who hunt deer with guns, just for sport? Is this the society that we have created? If so, this can be seen as one more sign that we are in our last days......
