SoHH Gyant's "RockStar Movement" Music Review!!

Universal Republic sent me an advance copy of Shop Boyz new album. And I’ve got to be honest - the project isn’t bad at all.

I’m sure most of y’all know that with today’s lackluster entertainers - if you purchase a CD, you might find 3-4 tracks you actually like (if you’re very lucky). But, “ROCKSTAR MENTALITY” exceeds that quota easily.

Contrary to what many may think, their new album, which hits stores June 19th, is not all about the “rock star movement”. It’s actually a perfect balance of traditional southern hip-hop hospitality mixed with a rock star edge.

Let me break down the good, and yes – even the bad.

Find out more below!

The Good:

The project is Hot!! I cant deny Rasheed “Sheed” Hightower, Richard “Fat” Stephens, and Demetrius “Meany” Hardin’s talent. In today’s generic, uninspiring hip-hop scene these dudes has successfully carved out a place for themselves.

Don’t get it twisted, these brutha’s aren’t totally rock. They come from the streets of Bankhead which they make very clear in their record titled “Bowen Homes”. An appearance by David Banner on the b.i.G.f.a.c.e. Entertainment produced — “They Like Me” — is also an unexpected surprise. You can hear many influences on their debut album.

The Bad:

Their lack of personality that separates them from the music is unappealing. There’s no intro, no outro, and no fillers in between to reflect their personalities.

The one thing I hear almost every time I hear anything positive about the Shop Boyz is immediately followed with a “who are they?” Their new album fails to shed any light as to who they are as individuals let alone collectively.

It’s unfortunate that they missed a grand opportunity to show their personality and let people finally know exactly whom these dudes really are.

Other then that I give this album a solid two thumbs up. And I don’t say that lightly. You can ask anybody who knows me – I am extremely critical of today’s music. But these guys are all about having fun and its oozing out of almost every record.

My dream collaboration with the Shop Boyz would be with Busta Rhymes. Could you imagine the energy on that record—totally dude!!

Talk to y’all lata,

--SoHH Gyant

  • Come on Gyant, are you serious man? You should honestly change this website name to SOHP (SCHOOL OF HIP-HOP)..because I rarely see any hip-hop on here. Shop Boyz is not considered hip-hop, and if they "are", they surely left a bad first impression with this rockstar shit. Again, we glorify another gimmick. When's real hip hop comin' back? Makes me wanna cry for real.

  • This is a joke right????? Blog of the day????? Its sad to see the shape that hip hop is in now. You can't let this horrible group just fade away, you keep posting on these clowns and rating the album. The remix is pure hot garbage (except for Cham's verse) and I wont even listen to an album where guys from the "hood" say totaly dude. That is pure fuck shit. You hate when white guys "talk or act black" so now some black dudes "act and talk white" and its alright. Fuck yall bithces. Talk about the Gucci Man's new deal. Talk about Pastor Troy's new album, where is Ghetto Mafia? Lets talk real gangster atlanta hip-hop not partying like faggot ass fake rockstars. By the way they could never party like a real rockstars like Ozzy or Gene Simmons. Real Talk it hurts but its TRUE!

Gyant, you know the shit is wack when that's the best you can about it. I know you trying to get ahead and network and all of that jazz, but c'mon brutha you know these boyz got 1 hit wonder written all of it.

Word of advice for "The Shop Boyz". Go get DJ Muggs "Soul Assissians" CD. Listen to the Goodie Mob song, pay attention to Cee-Lo's verse. Don't say nobody ever told you.

Not hatin, just saying unless something happens in the next few weeks these dudes will be one hit wonders. Come with talent instead of a gimmick, if you call yourself a rapper then you better be able to rap circles around the next man, not just have a slick verse and a catch phrase.

Also what work for the next man, ain't going to work for you, so just because so and so is getting by with little to no talent don't mean you will be able to either.

  • Some of yall makin comments are so stuck in a box as to what hiphop should be that yall might be missing out on something good. i havn't heard the album yet, and i know that these dudes are no lyrist by far, but tell me EVERY RAP SONG u heard was by a lyrical beast, and i'll slap the hell out of u for lying.

I give Gyant his props on sticking his nose neck out and giving us an honest opinion on how he feels about the album, instead of going with what's popular on this site and bashing them for no reason.

Nope, i aint buyin it untill i take an I-tunes preview. I think they have a 99.9% chance of being a gimick biting off the the whole rock star thing to stand out for one song. But i like "Party like a Rockstar", and if they somehow pull off a whole album fusing rap/rock and make it hot, i'll buy. I'm just not knocking the album before i here it like alot of these cats doin.

Ok fuck boy, am i in the family of a rapper, nope. u are though, ya moms raps burgers, and get's paid on comission.

rap sales matter to me ONLY because i think a good album should be recognized by the public. if they don't, so what, i still get music i like.

since u so concerned about record sells and rap aint selling, shouldn't u be a Hannah Montana fan. Record sales reflect hotness for u, then she's killing the game right now.

  • I just downloaded and heard the album... it's nothing new. I thought the "hood rock" was supposed to be a new movement, but it sounds like all the other stuff down here in Atlanta. Can somebody in the A other than Outkast, T.I. and Ludacris please give me something new.

BTW... just because I like underground shit don't mean I'm a backpacker... it's just like saying just because you listen to gangsta music don't mean that you're hood nigga.

Respect to Shop Boyz for their hustle.
