SOHH Gyant's Randomness: Hip-Hop, We Got To Start Looking Back In Order To Go Forward!!!

Posted on May 2, 2007 12:49 AM

Sometimes we have to look back in order to look forward.

I’ve complied a few old school videos that used to be the cuts back in the day. Remember when Hip-Hop used to be fun? Remember when it was about big video budgets with socially conscious undertones.

Take a minute to travel back in time with me to when it was all good, well at least better then it is now. Check out my classic video(s) selections after the jump.

TLC - "Waterfalls"

Outkast - "Player's Ball"

Ludacris - "Southern Hospitality"

TLC And Goodie Mob "What It Ain't (Ghetto Enuff)"

Let the shit marinate in ya brain.

Talk to y'all lata,

--SoHH Gyant

  • That Player's Ball was my shit. I was bumping this in my walkman on the schoolbus every morning. None of the black niggaz had walkmans or MTV so they'd all be like, "Herbz, what you got there?" I'd tell 'em, "Yo, this that new-new from these niggaz called Outkast." You can basically say that I introduced Outkast to Marietta because wasn't nann nigga bumping they shit before me!
White Niggaz know the good shit!

Peace to all my white niggaz on the grind!

  • I agree 100% There is a significant difference (re: quality) between Outkast, Goodie Mobb, Scarface and the like - and Jeezy, TI, Rick Ross, etc. WE all came up listening to the same sounds. How did social relevance, lyricism, depth, and morality escape so many of todays current artists??? Is it because no one once to be a rapper or an emcee, but rather a hustler and a trapper?

  • that's whats up, i appreciate u postin stuff from some legendary artists from the A.

But people really have selective memory in regards to the type of hiphop we were all lovin back then. When the truth remains that hip hop has always been a reflection of the harsh realities that young black kids in urban america are experiencing, especially in the 90's (remember Biggie ten crack commandments, remember Master P ghetto dope). If there is a trend, hiphop is more fun now then it was back then. These days most artists try to release the dance or party record and you have to buy the album to get the street joints. Back then the street joint used to be the single. I'm not saying that's a bad thing it's just the truth.

  • GYANT IS A FRAUD, HE IS NOT HIP HOP! None of those are old school except for players ball. And old school used to be about LOW budget fun with socially consious undertones. Old school woulda been some de la or the pharcyde. Even if you only wanted southern, there's the geto boys and a better TLC cut could have been "What About Your Friends". There's nothing fun about waterfalls that shit is depressing. GYANT YOU KNOW NOTHING OF HIP HOP QUIT! Its blatant that you just googled rap from atlanta or some shit and posted whatever videos came up! Nigga I'm 20 and I know that most of those aren't old school and that you just pretend to know what you're talking about. Gyant's from New York writing about Atlanta, that right there is ridiculous! I would rather Matt Herbs ole wanna be ass to write this shit at least his cracka ass knows a lil bit about ATL.
