What’s good everybody?

The main reason why I decided to re-launch SoHH.com’s Atlanta’s Own is because I know first hand how many talented, socially conscious unsigned artists there are out there, and its time for them to get their shine.

Everybody is shouting that Hip-Hop is dead, but what is anybody doing to try and save it? Well I have platform and I’m going to use it to support exactly what this site was built on—which is Online Hip-Hop! Betcha didn't know that's what S.O.H.H. originally stood for did ya?

I had a lot of music to pick from and realized in the middle of my listening session that I ran into a problem—I had too much music!!!

So I had to make one last minute change to the showcase. Instead of posting 5 songs a week, I’m only doing three. If I don’t reduce the amount of songs on one post, then it will just be too much text to read and I feel that people will grow tired of all the reading which could potentially leave some music left unheard. Surely you can understand…

In this week’s edition we’ve got music from resident commenting loudmouth DJ Oktoba, truth speaking Carolina Tone, and eclectic hip-hop group Dirty Water.

I aint gonna lie, it was hard to decide with so much good ass music to pick from. If only I could have this feeling when I go into record store now a days! But after listening to most of the music that was submited, these tracks were the ones that I felt best to kick this shit off right! So here you go - Enjoy!

Many of you are already familiar with DJ Oktoba. He’s one of SoHH’s loyal commenters and was the first artists to submit his music a couple of weeks ago. His submission “Scapegoat”(I Refuse 2 Loose) is actually pretty good. I love how he incorporated today’s current events into this cut. This track needs to be on national radio today.

Scapegoat (Refuse 2 Loose) - DJ Oktoba (Only Available For Download- Something About The Format Isnt Allowing It To Be Played)

DJ Oktoba B.K.A. Bunch~A~Brains e discuss everything that’s been going on in the media lately… Bunch~A~Brains, Psykotik & Rob~Ju are all from Alabama this is from last night when we recorded the song in Jus~A~Dream Studio’s about 3:30 in the morning I told y’all don’t sleep…

I got two words for you - Carolina Tone. This kat’s track, “Rhythm of Life”, is the truth! The production is crazy, the beat is high energy, and the most important element of this cut – is that it’s got a message. The shit is crazy!!!!

Rhythm of Life – Carolina Tone

Carolina Tone started writing poetry when he was nine years old. Growing up listening to such heavyweights as Big Daddy Kane, Kool G. Rap, BDP, Rakim, EPMD,Kool Moe Dee,and N.W.A he quickly turned his poems of Tonka toys and GI Joe into raps his first rap song he wrote was about Janet Jackson when he was in the seventh grade.

It wasn't until he came to Charleston Southern University in 1996 that he begin to realize that he could make a career out of hip hop by battling rappers all over the lower and midstate in South Carolina and embarrassing them with his clever punchlines. He has put out four mixtapes along with his crew Takeover that have been sold over the enitire United States and overseas. But he is now ready to showcase his solo ability with the his debut album coming in Summer 2007.

This Hip-Hop Group, Dirty Water, came out the gate with tight songs. Their track, “Ballad of A Bright Faced Girl”, should be heard by every young lady- hell every female period about the realness of the world.

Ballad Of A Bright Faced Girl - Dirty Water

They come to us as two among us, not below or above Joe D and Cool Cee Brown met in 1999 on the campus of North Carolina Central University in Durham. By then they had both made names for themselves, independently, as undiscovered talents. Cee Brown frequented local poetry readings and gained popularity as a spoken word artist alongside songstress, Yahzarah, and the funk/jazz fusion band, Hidden Image. Joe had turned his apartment into a home recording studio and was compiling a catalogue of underground hits with rap trio, Train of Thought.

As fate would have it, after Train of Thought and Hidden Image disbanded, they both, now hungry for a creative outlet, joined the new go-go group, The Marquee Band & Show, as front line vocalists. There, for the first time, they witnessed each other's talents and Dirty Water emerged from the mire of failed attempts and unrecognized potential.
