SOHH Gyant's Randomness: Top Atlanta Mover And Shakers In Hip-Hop!!

Posted on April 10, 2007 6:43 AM

If you frequent the Midtown to Downtown area then you’ve had to open up a Sunday Paper. And in this weeks edition they have compiled a list of the Top 40 celebrity mover and shakers of the jewel of the south’s music scene.

Surprisingly there are more then just celebrities on this list which was created by my dude Kevin Forest Moreau.

apachecrowd.jpg

36. APACHE CAFÉ
Its former incarnation, the Yin Yang Café, was the city's neo-soul capitol, helping to launch stars like India.Arie and Anthony David. Apache puts its own spin on that tradition as Atlanta's nexus of quality soul, hip-hop and spoken-word performers.

01_02.jpg

17. USHER
Just when it seemed he was yesterday’s news in the hot-for-15 minutes contemporary R&B world, Usher expanded his reach to the Broadway stage. While his highly publicized turn as an actor/singer in a revival of "Chicago" wasn’t met with critical raves, it showed that the guy with the best abs in urban pop has the talent, drive and stamina to cross over into other fields (as if his new custom label and business dealings including the Cleveland Caveliers and the Grape wine-bar chain didn't make that obvious).
A recent engagement (and speeding ticket) keeps his name in print locally, too.

16. CRIMINAL RECORDS
You don’t need to be an MBA to know that this is not a good time to be in the retail music business. But this Little Five Points landmark survives and even thrives due to its location, knowledgeable staff and a frisky ambition to be more than just a place to pick up tickets, CDs, videos and offbeat zines. With an impressive list of free in-store performances, a freewheeling weekly Internet newsletter and a finger on the pulse of the local indie community, Criminal plays good cop to a thriving scene it helped create and continues to foster.

14. LIL JON
He made "crunk" a household word and launched acts like Atlanta's Ying-Yang Twins into the club-music stratosphere.

12. JAZZE PHA
Another one of Atlanta's legion of talented hitmakers, he produced R&B hottie Ciara's pivotal single "1, 2 Step."

11. JERMAINE DUPRI

DALLASAUSTINGALA.jpg

10. DALLAS AUSTIN
Between them, these two producers have launched more careers than Monster.com. Dupri, the self-proclaimed Donald Trump of Atlanta, founded So So Def Records, made stars out of Bow Wow and Kris Kross, and engineered Mariah Carey's amazing 2005 comeback with "The Emancipation of Mimi"; in February, he was named Island Records' President of Urban Music, having held similar positions for Arista and Virgin Records. Austin, meanwhile, has produced tracks for TLC, Madonna, Pink, Gwen Stefani, Boys II Men Ciara and Duran Duran, and is a respected film producer as well.

Dungeon%20Family.jpg

5. OUTKAST AND THE DUNGEON FAMILY
It's an open question whether André Benjamin (aka André 3000) and Antwan "Big Boi" Patton will continue to collaborate musically under the OutKast banner. But the runaway success of 2003's "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" gave the pair the clout to record an album of 16th-century lute music if they so choose (although here's hoping they don't). That influence has definitely rubbed off on their friends in the Dungeon Family collective, from Goodie Mob and Cee-Lo Green (of Gnarls Barkley) to Killer Mike. While Benjamin focuses on an acting career and Cartoon Network's "Class of 3000," Patton continues to support Dungeon artists via his Purple Ribbon label, including Bubba Sparxxx and producer/soul singer Sleepy Brown.

LUDACRIS.jpg

3. LUDACRIS

In a crowded field of Atlanta-based hip-hop luminaries with strong national name recognition—T.I., André Benjamin, etc.—Chris "Ludacris" Bridges stands out. The former local radio personality and his savvy manager, Chaka Zulu, exhibit an uncanny instinct for broadening Luda's appeal: In a short time, he's gone from Bill O'Reilly's foul-mouthed foe to respected actor ("Crash," "Hustle & Flow"), philanthropist and businessman. Musically, Ludacris sports a deceptively simple flow and is equally adept at club anthems ("Stand Up"), raunchy crowd-pleasers ("Area Codes") and even socially conscious fare ("Runaway Love")—a talent that recently won him the Best Rap Album Grammy for "Release Therapy."

drama.jpg

2. DJ DRAMA
Even before his Jan. 16 arrest for racketeering, the man born Tyree Simmons was well-known as T.I.'s resident DJ, one of the principals of the respected Aphilliates crew (including DJ Cannon, who was also arrested) and, most notably, the acknowledged king of the mixtape via his "Gangsta Grillz" series, which helped launch the careers of artists like Young Jeezy. Since January, Drama's profile has grown exponentially, as he finds himself at the center of the debate over mixtapes—album-length bootleg CDs used as promotional tools by major record labels, and targeted by those same labels for their illegal use of copyrighted tracks.

tiandtiny.jpg

1. T.I.
By itself, last year's "King" was enough to secure rapper/entrepreneur/philanthropist Clifford "Tip" Harris' status as a first-tier superstar; it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and R&B Hip-Hop Albums charts, selling 522,000 units its first week. But the Atlanta native's Grammy-winning collaboration with Justin Timberlake on "My Love" cemented the deal. All of which only primes the pump for his next project, the hotly anticipated "T.I. vs. T.I.P.," set for release this summer.

Though its great that a lot of rappers got their shine in a mostly white newspaper. I still cant say that I agree in Putting DJ Drama and Ludacris before Outkast and The Dungeon Family. To me Outkast will always be number one.

Talk to ya lata

Why is that when a white person committ a mistake, that you want to bury it? I think it's not fair. Don Imus use a term that he had no buisness using. Don Imus probably never heard the word before til rap music. The N word as well as other degrading African American term does not have the same effect as it did back in the 60's like it does today. But, it is still wrong to use no matter what rap artistes use it.

That list is fucked. I can understand T.I., But Drama? How is he higher than usher or jermaine or fucking outkast. Dude is out of a job, he isnt shit anymore but an example. Real Talk. That list needs re-aranging.
    1. T.I.
    2. Jermaine Dupri
    3. Luda
    4. Outkast
    5. Dallas Austin
    6. Jazze Phe
    7. Usher
    8. Polow Da Don
    so on and so forth.

The only reason I'd put Outkast 4th is because of the more RECENT success of the top 3.

Oh and this comment is retarded - "16th-century lute music if they so choose (although here's hoping they don't). "

Uhm, they already did and it sucked and bombed. 'Idlewilde' remember that??? Damn Gyant, the guy who wrote this is about as uninformed as you can be sometimes. lol.

  • Gyant I completely agree, OutKast put Atl on the map and they still doing they thing. I know T.I. is hot right now, but Kast been puttin it down for decades and they still hot. Hell I would say Luda should be higher than T.I. because of his accomplishments on the silver screen, didn't dude win an oscar.

The most silly of all is DJ Drama at #2, how in fuck is dude more powerful than JD. Really JD should be #1, then Kast and so forth. JD has making hot albums & repping the A for going on 20 years, can't nobody on that list say that. DJ Drama should be like #30, he's a fucking mixtape DJ, that shit ain't that hard. Yeah, he's a huslter but c'mon lets not get carried away here.

Here's Cee-Lo at, dude got an international hit album and he crossed over from rapping to singing. I guess you could say he's lumped in with the Dungeon Fam, but if that's the case then they should be higher than #5.

This list is wack, do better Kevin.
