Russell Simmons Actually Stands Up In The Name Of Hip-Hop. While St Louis Radio Puts It's Foot Down Against Offensive Lyrics!!

Hot damn look what a little persuasion can do? The main page on SoHH.com posted a story on Russell Simmons and The Hip-Hop Summit Action Network urging the recording industry and media outlets to censor misogynistic lyrics and racist terms from future recordings.

I got say to that I am very surprised at how swiftly the industry has swooped down on the culture as a whole.

While I still feel we have along way to go. It’s good to see the writing on the wall. Let’s see if Russell’s recommendation has any effect.

St Louis radio has also put the smackdown on offensive lyrics by stating the following:

St. Louis Based company Roberts Broadcasting Company has anounced that it will remove any and all “offensive” content from its hip hop radio station WRBJ-FM/Hot 97.7. The company is setting up a staff that will sort through all music submitted to the radio station and anything thing they find as being offensive will be tossed.

“We’re going to ban them altogether, which is a hard move for a hip-hop station. If it’s offensive in any way toward women, toward African-Americans, it’s not going to be played on Hot 97.7.” said Keesha Dhaene, a spokesperson for Roberts.

I can see a profound shift taking place in music, and it's about time! Though hip-hop is in dire straights at the moment let’s take it back to when it was all good. I got some classic video for y'all to watch.

  • I'm kinda torn on this. On one hand, you've got people actually interested in changing the culture for the better, whatever that REALLY means.

On the other hand, it's really just censorship. Honestly, do ya'll really think that toning down the mature content is going to fix the low musical quality?

No, a newer, cleaner, perhaps even more Pop-like version of commercial rap will probably rise to replace the old. I somehow think that it's not just going to be racially insensitive language that is going to get the axe here, and something also tells me that people like MIMS will still be able to tell us why they're apparently so god damn 'hot' without having to resort to misogyny or racism.

Basically, it's just gonna get a lot harder out here for the hardcore artists.

Pretty much everybody recognizes Biggie Smalls as a great Hip Hop artist, but if he were to have dropped Ready To Die under these new guidelines, Juicy would be the only song suitable for the radio. Which actually makes sense, the content guidelines were sometimes a little bit more strict in the early 90s then later on, which is part of why he had a single like Juicy at all.

However, think about all of Big's amazing, if not violent, raunchy and misogynist lyrics. If you think about it, you probably have a couple favorite Biggie lines you wouldn't wanna repeat in front of your grandma, but that's because you know there's a time and place for everything.

My question is this: Would we be so willing to accept, even applaud these new guidelines that these knee-jerk-reaction politicians and celebrities are calling for if the music being censored were some of our favorite Hip Hop classics?

  • The whole thing seems to be a knee jerk reaction, maybe a needed reaction, I’m not sure …. But I don’t see it lasting too long, the topic is in the spotlight so people are going to run with it in order to push their own agendas… Most Hip Hop getting mainstream love is pretty much pop orientated so I don’t think this will bring the end of the one-hit wonders or the rebirth of classic Hip Hop, in fact we will probably see more corny radio targeted joints all over the radio & TV now… Personally, I think there is a time and place for all types of songs & artists…. The idea of banning music just doesn’t sit well with me. Again, I cant help but feel this is just another push by your Government via the recording industry to stunt the multi-billion dollar Hip Hop industry that they just can’t seem to control or extract considerable funds from. Also, do we hear anything about other forms of misogynistic/violent/racial music being censored? Too much propaganda makes it hard to think…

So I guess we need a rapper to buy a radio station now just to get any type of real rotation.

They can say all the crap they want, but it once the music gets to be about making that money and who has the biggest diamonds, it takes away from the real message. censoring what words come out of a rappers mouth isnt the problem, take away the commercialism and materialism in the music! Once again they (the man) is tricking us into fighting the wrong battle

You mean to tell me that some racist says something degrading and then blames hip hop music-which he doesn't listen to- and you guys run out to change what it is we do??? Yeah some people may feel disrespected by some things we say but if thats the case go listen to soft rock or something. Us out here in the streets will always spit our environment and anyone who don't like it can come write that check to come change it but to censor us from our own music that we created in the first place??? nah dis is for us by us!

Tighting up folk that is the company that owns the station. I know Micheal Roberts and he owns over 17% of St. Louis. In regards to the topic it's pass time for something new. I mean lets elevate our minds and go higher. The fact of the matter is what growth w/o change? Its like the sky w/o rain. Similar to life w/o pain. In the words of 2pac " Proud to be black but why do we act like We don't love oursleves Don't look around busta (you sucka)
Check yourselves know what if means to be black whether a man or girl
we're still struggling in this White man's world. It's not them knocking us off its us knocking us off".

  • This is kind of a slick move by Russel, Because if you read the details about their recommendation, it states that the edited versions that play on radio and video should remove all of those words. THE EDITED VERSIONS HAVE ALREADY REMOVED THOSE WORDS. Which is a good way to make the hiphop haters feel like a compromise was made. Which is good so maybe Al Sharpton can move on to real issues affecting our communities like poverty, and education. You can trust that Russel can't and wouldn't censor hiphop artists from saying what they want to say.

SHT ASS NIGGER HO AND BITCH ARE ALL ON TV

ALL THIS MEANS IS ARTIST WILL DO A BETTER JOB ON RADIO THEIR EDITS
SO WHATS THE POINT NOTHINGS CHANGED

RUSSELL JUST FOLLOWED SUIT CAUSE THE RADIO STATION PUT THEIR FOOT DOWN
AND THE ONLY REASONS THE RADIO STATIONS ARE BACKING OFF IS BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT TO GET BOYCOTTED AND LOSE MONEY FROM SPONSORS.

These dudes is still allowed to say whatever they waqnt to say on records in the street where ever without beuing put in prison, thats the definition freedom of speech.

The radio station can chose not to air their words because the radio station is private, so it can make its own choice and by banning certain things they are actually exercising their own freedom of speech.

The mic's are owned and paid for by the radio station.

the rappers can still make their wack records, and you can still go out and get them off of I-Tunes, limewire or whatever.

and this lesson kids was in the difference between protected speech and a freee market.

I wish cate wiould stop spouting this corny line all the time.

secondly, and I think this is good news, if cats are forced to actually step their game up and find concepts and be creative again then how can that be bad for the game? Do we really need another MIMS or "walk it out" song?

If this forces cats to step up then the end game is that the weaker cats that are eating right now will be forced out the game.

    thats good.

The radio station likewise can chose to air their words without being shutdown or not air their words because the radio station is private, so it can make its own choice of what content it airs, and by banning certain things or words that they want to portray or be broadcast from the giant over the air speakerbox they pay for they are actually exercising their own freedom of speech.

The mic's and playback equipment and broadcast equipment is owned and paid for by the radio station. It's a free market. If their listeners tune out they lose add dollars and they are shut down. Their choice. If their listeners demand change and they do it and they get more listeners they might gain add dollars. Either ways its a free market place.

The only thing that will really change this is for people to refuse to listen to or buy all the "disposable" (c)rap music and for Hip Hop to return to its roots in the spoken word, the art of story-telling, and the use of real DJ's or maybe even live music such as what Mojoe and Bavu Blakes provide.

did you wear a helmet when you crashed, apparently not dog.

again, what he is saying is that the clean version be removed from radio station archives and playlists for even alluding (look that up dummy) to certain words, or if the dirty version has it.

Did I say that the RIAA was going to try and stop making dudes curse, no clown I didn't, because they can't fool because they are not the government and they dont have a prison cell to lock artists up in if they do curse.

All this means is that vulgar artists will have to release their unimaginitive smut on indie labels that arent controlled by the RIAA cartel. Its called free market. If the indie labels make a crap load of $$$$$ money then you can bet that RIAA will suddenly lose their soul again and go back to status quo whitch is inevitable anyway so this whole episode is no more than a dog and pony show for Russell and others to look like they arent the whore$ that they are, but I digress.

I said that RIAA has a right not to release, promote or air the shyt they dont want to and as a private org that is their right. some (including you) said it was against free speech, 1st amendment blah blah. It isn't.

I corrected you and some other stupid illiterate fools that need to actually read their civics class books instead of using them to roll blunts on.

and now the realness comes out of you in repsonse, can't talk without blaming "whitey" and callin me "nicca".

Its not hard to see why my talk with you has fallen on deaf ears. You are practically a walking talking billboard of the stereotypical coon jiggaboo dumb azz that the media gives the mic to to represent us in dialogue shows and on the news and this is why the rest of the world laughs their ass of at us the African American, the most gifted yet willfully uneduacted group of people to ever be born.

Then in some instances the editing is so bad that you can still hear what they were bleeping out. The bottom line is that Hip Hop is out of hand. The artist have no moral values and it shows in there lyrical content. Anyone can write a song about do this bitch and watch this ho I got this car and these diamonds. They have no creativity at all lyrically. That is why most of these artist free style game is so weak they don't have creative minds. If they don't want to be censored they should move all hip hop stations to satellite radio and then they can say what ever they want too with no censorship issues.
