Russell, Russell, Russel, Please Sit Your Ass Down Somewhere, I Just Cant Take It!!

No Disrespect but I wish Russell Simmons would sit his ass down somewhere. As if he hasn’t been in the media enough lately, now he’s turning his “hip-hop savior” efforts towards Atlanta public schools.

In a press release that I just received (well two days ago), one of the founding fathers of Hip-Hop is coming to the jewel of the south to supposedly curve the 33-50% dropout rate.

Here is a snippet from the press release:

Literate Nation Atlanta, whose mission is to "motivate teens to 'get into' high school and prepare for life," will produce three local student events featuring hip-hop legend and entrepreneur Russell Simmons. Students from six local high schools will receive a free copy of Russell's inspirational new book, Do You! Northsprings, Westlake, Carver, Therrell, Southside and Washington high schools will participate.

"Many of the students failing or dropping out live in an environment that has not sold them on the inviolate interconnection between higher education and success in America. This may be due to influences from their family, socio-economic situation or social group," said Hinton Dillard, Chairman and Founder, Literate Nation.

While the press release was nice and all, there was nothing in it that explained exactly what the plan is to curve the dropout rate.

I won’t pretend to claim that I know what’s all a doin with public school these days, I really haven’t paid attention. But I have heard that Georgia schools are one of the worse in the nation.

So if I understand this correctly, Russell plans on helping curve kids dropping out by bestowing (giving) them a book and an autograph?

Something about that doesn’t make much sense to me, but I digress. Does it make any sense to you?

Here a video that I found online that has Russell in the hot seat again defending hip-hop(you'd think that he'd pass the podium to somebody else at this point wouldnt you?) Check it out and tell me what you feel!

Talk to y’all Lata,

SoHH Gyant

so if you dont know whats going on in the public schools and you dont have a plan the why would you hate on a man thats making an effort?
    damn
russell is on the front line trying to 1) defend hip hop from these white media outlets that rather bash it then understand it
    and
    2) he's defending hip hop after cam'pons dumb ass comments.

to say atlant school system is the worst then hate on a man thats addressing it is stupid, but then again what can i expect from sohh gyant

  • Brooklyn B, before I saw your comment, I was thinking the exact same thing. You summed up my thoughts completely... That's the problem with "us". We're quick to be judgemental of someone else's efforts while we sit back and spectate. It's rather irresponsible to be critical (especially verbally) of someone's efforts when you haven't even done your research.

First, let me begin by saying that I read this blog daily. You have caught a lot of heat on here lately and I have tried to stand by you.

I can not support your post today though. How can you criticize Russ for doing SOMETHING about the public education system while doing yourself? To make matters worse, you admit that you do not know anything that is going on in the GA school system.

We as black people need to stop attacking those in our community who dare to do SOMETHING. Especially when we are not doing anything positive OURSELVES.

It is not about a book and an autograph. It is about inspiring today's youth to strive for something better. If Russ can play a hand in motivating GA youth, I say let's applaud him...not tear his efforts down.

When you attack ANYONE for doing SOMETHING, you become a part of the problem...this blog should have been about how we in the ATL hip hop community can get involved and help the youth.

I did not write this response to attack you, but to offer my opinion on what I consider to be a bad post. Keep doing your thing man. At least this post will hopefully spark an insightful conversation about the substandard education in our state.

How you gonna say that Russell Simmons, a founding father in hip hop and one of the most successful men in america, has nothing to offer but a book and an autograph? Even if he just sent a tape and some pre-signed books. That's taking time out of his day and money out of his pocket to try to help schools that aren't in his old hood or even in New york. You saying a black man who's traveled the world, been a millionaire a couple hundred times over, and who is hip hop personified has nothing to say to these kids? He made it out of Queens in the 80s that right there is inspiring. He set out to cultivate a new music and found our most historic record label. So you see Russell doesn't need to sit his ass down somewhere. He's actually being proactive about these lil dumbass niggas dropping out. He could be laying back at the palace boning 6 model chicks on a carpet made of hundreds but instead he's in georgia trying to make a difference. So nigga miss me with with the shit talking YOU CAN'T GET AN INTERVIEW WITH LIL BOW WOW much less Russell.

  • I agree 100% with Brooklyn B, and Enough is Enough. When I saw the title.. I had suspected this to be about the way he's been promoting his book, on the height of this "Kill Hip Hop" campaign. But then I see its about dude tryin to educate those who need to be educated. Not only that... he is doing one hell of a job @ defending Hip Hop, by not backing down, simply b/c everyone is giving him the business. He is the founder of this movement. And if anyone should defend it.. It should be him. I'm surprised that most artists w/ voices aren't even speaking out yet! (Ie: Jay-Z, Diddy, Luda, 50, etc...) I'm somewhat a newbie to posting.. I read ur blogs every now and then. But this one seemed to be a blog based on a personal vendetta.. Rather than what its really about. I'd like more info on, how I can be involved. Not only for the south, but in my own community. B/c otherwise, we will continue to have nothing to do w/ our lives.. And continue to blame the man for why most of us are dead or locked up b/c they pulled us over for no reason, and happen to find the gun used in a murder!!

I understand that this is just a blog and simply your opinion, therefore I take what you say with a grain of salt. Since you claim to blog about hip hop from a ATL perspective it would seem you would give a damn about the people who embody hip hop and actually live the lives rappers simply report about . . . F'n teenagers!!

As a educator, high school drop out rates are not a regional promblem, its a national problem. You of all people should be aware of the deficient literacy skills as you are constantly misunderstood, and people post inconsistent garbage to try and argue with you!

Nevertheless, you are right an autographed book won't bring any tangible results. But a person in Simmons position is simply bringing light to a very dark problem. Still, the backwardness of this blog simply contradicts your rightousness about the state of hip hop a couple of days ago. You, need to wake up bruh!

  • first off lets define snitching
snitching is when you TELL on someone to PROTECT YA NECK!!

if a drug dealer tells the police on another drug dealer YOUR A SNITCH!

if a CITIZEN tells police on a drug dealer then he's helping clean up his community. where did the misconception come from that snitching means not standing up for something?

if this old lady tell the cops on all the drug dealers and they get locked up and she turns around and start slinging that bitch is a snitch, she's not trying to better the hood, shes contributing to the bullshit.
russ still have street cred because he CONTRIBUTES to the hood, he REACH OUT to the hood.

and all these fake ass "i dont snitch rappers" they snitch on there albums. All that i know big meech wait tuil he come home he gonna have the block on lock again....THATS DRY SNITCHING!

i keep the work at my momma house...then when u get locked ur looking like "how they find out where i keep the work at?" you told on your self.

and the WORST snitch is the snitch that tells to hold you back like when the slaves was trying to bounce and that snitch as slave told on u for a extra piece of chitlings, lol.

Cam'Pon is an ass...and snitch so is freeky zeeky if thats the case, check thesmokinggun.com and see for your self.

APS (Atlanta Public Schools) is FUCKED UP, Im a product myself (Parks Middle, Washington High, Mays High). I always had good grades, but I used to wonder what grades I would have gotten if I went to a white school Uptown in North Fulton or something. Im sure I my GPA would have been below a 2.5. Most niggas I knew stopped going to school in the 10th grade, and truancy is a none issue on the westside, I always see kids walking around on school days with no worries. So this attention is much needed. There is no focus on college, of the people I hung with, I was the only one who went to school. I had a friend who did have a full ride to Alcorn State playing football & basketball, but this dumb nigga robbed a Ms. Winners during spring break and got a 12-15. With all that said I still got love for APS. I had some fun times when I was in school, I miss the football games at Lakewood, I even miss the teen parties at the Warehouse, Pavillion, and the Gate we used to go to. Thats when a nigga repped his hood like I owned square inch of it. I was all about B.E. I do think that with his resources and his star power, that he could do more than just give out some books and give a speech. Our children need to be encouraged and rewarded for making positive choices and trying to do positive things. It's a sad day when just deciding to stay in school is reason to be awarded, but if that's what it takes then we should do it.

  • @The "Dean" (Clever)

Anyway, Russell did more than make the deal with the white man. Rush management was responsible for a couple of hip-hop's huge successes. Kurtis Blow's "Christmas Rapping", Dj Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince's career, Run DMC's mash up with Aerosmith, The Beastie Boys, Slick Rick, the list goes on and on. Point is, he not only created Def Jam, but his managment company did a ton to get hip-hop out to the masses, and that required more than making a deal with the white man first. A lot goes in to managing and guiding an aritist, and they were at the helm of the careers. Not to mention that many powerful execs in the business now either worked with Russ, or were students of his (Lyor, Kevin Liles, James Lassiter, Puffy, Andre Harell, etc..). Point being, he did a lot more than signing the deal with the white man first, and although its impossible to prove that hip-hop wouldn't have grown without his contributions, its just a silly to say that it didn't benefit greatly from them.

Education is the key. How you gonna ask for money but don't know how to write a check or open up a bank account? Did Russell ask for money when he was broke? He went out and worked. But if you don't have a HS diploma get ready to flip burgers and move up to fries in a year.

People sell drugs because lack of education, ignorance and stupidity.

Drugs is not the only means to making money and the consequences of getting caught is just not worth it.

Money is not the key to happiness either. If you're an idiot without money, you'll be an even bigger one with it.

  • The best way to help the ghetto is start off by helping the ones that want to help themselves, be consistent and set an example that empowerment and education is the key to real "freedom" in life. Meaning more opportunities and choices.

Gyant shall be known as "midget" from this day forward, congrats my nig, you earned it.

Sohh Midget, I guess the question of how stupid you really are has been answered.

Were you get the idea to come at Russell for doing something positive is beyond me, maybe if you quit worrying about who is gay in hip hop and tried doing something meaningful and constructive you might understand what Russell is trying to do. Atleast he's doing something, what is contribution to Atl's education problem???

However, I do think that the way them bull daggers from Spelman went hard on my dude on Oprah is part of the reason why he in the A, cause NYC's drop out rate is 50% and rising so he could have saved on the air fare and did something here.

But yeah Midget, you suck in life, sorry but it's true.

  • I wish niggas would quit posting about the Willie Lynch speech. That shit NEVER happened! It is an internet hoax. Ther term Lynch actually came from the name of one [Captain] William Lynch (1742 - 1820), who made a name for himself by forming a vigilante group to uphold order in his town. The earliest reference to Captain Lynch being the namesake of the word lynch comes from A. Ellicott, in 1811, who wrote "Captain Lynch just mentioned was the author of the Lynch laws so well known and so frequently carried into effect some years ago in the southern States in violation of every principle of justice and jurisprudence" (from A. Ellicott by V. Mathews, 1908). Apparently, Captain Lynch's vigilante tribunal was first convened some time between 1776 and 1780.

This "Willie Lynch" speech was supposedly made in 1712 which is 3o years before William Lynch was born. Plus he refers to King James in the speech. King James of England was long dead and Queen Anne was on the throne in 1712.

This willie lynch shit is almost as bad as the Microsoft email that says you will get paid for forwarding a chain email. That shit has been circulating the net for 10 years now.

If it's on the internet, then it MUST be true...

  • I understand and agree with most of the comments made on this blog.. But, I often wonder why children feel the need to cut class and drop out of school. Many know the importance of achieving an education its not until they enter the school system that something goes terribly wrong. Is it the bullies, gangs and lack of focus. Many drop outs decided to complete the process after they reach adulthood because as an adult you are not easily intimidated or harassed by the youth in you neighborhood. those who do not complete are embarrassed to step in a classroom with a 5th Grade reading and math level. I want to understand why is it not cool to be smart in school? who made the rule up and why. Does it all really start in the home or is it all a circular effect such as community, leaders, artist, teachers and parents.. The saying is that it takes a village to raise a child )and we all know the counter affect) and only one man to tare it down.. are gay ass Carmon and 50 cent the one man who tore it down or was it their Predecessors or the music labels or all included? Was it my neighbor who sold oohhwee and smoked it on the front stoop that corrupted the brains of these young children that they should get high then go to school and bash an innocent bystander in the head with a tree trunk? who takes the responsibility and how do we change it? Who started the whole concept that if a boy cries they are weak and they must be macho at all times. Being a man is about being the aggressor. Beat you woman to control her and if she wants to leave kill her. If she does not have a man she is worthless as a matter of fact she cannot even get custody of the child once the divorce is finalized and women cant own land (did you know that only African women could own land prior to the woman’s movement). I don’t think that black people started the disrespect of women or the disintegration of our community we just did not know how to stop it and did not understand the ramifications of our actions and how it would affect our future generations of potential leaders. Why are so many African American people unemployed and why is the government not trying to change policies to put true revenue into the community. Is it Russell's responsiblity or is he steping up and taking a stance ready for it or not? I would like to see what some of these rappers will do in the next few weeks. will they make an campian for education or death... I could go on and on but time is limited.

  • Gyant,

I am rather appalled that you weould have the audacity to sit there and criticize this man’s asserted effort to at least ADDRESS a issue which plagues us so much as a people. While you are admittedly ignorant as to the propensity of Georgia’s dropout rate, you should be ashamed to throw darts at this man for merely recognizing the fact that this is an important issue…I mean, truth be told, of course he’s marketing and trying to sell a book, but I feel that the fact that such an issue has been brought to light should serve as merit in and of itself ( hell at least he didn’t shooot a mu’fucka or hell get HIMSELF shot!!)…..Russell has done a hell of a job at addressing issues in areas of importance, i.e. financial empowerment, the diamond issues in Africa, etc……..while becoming a SELF-MADE millionaire……… Now, here is where WE should hop on and work in a united effort, to further help CURVE this dropout rate…..Russell has initiated the cause, now how bout you do your part and instead of trying to berate his efforts for YOUR OWN personal gain and/or recognition……... …..ADD to it in a more positive and assertive effort………….I’ve been skeptical of you in the past, but this does it. You really should educate yourself before “Representin” the A in your blog…..I’m calling for your removal immediately………

Russ is Self-Made……How about you stop using other people as Stepping Stones and Try “DOING YOU!”
