Ok, so I went to the NCAA “Big Dance†event on Saturday to watch Ludacris and Johnta Austin perform. But, unfortunately I missed Luda setting the stage on fire (I mean that figuratively of course) due to my inability to maneuver around all the damn people.
From what I heard from SOHH SOULFUL who flew into town over the weekend to do some work with DTP/ Def Jam recording artist Bobby Valentino, Hey Bobby, Oscar Winner Forrest Whitaker dropped by to watch Ludacris do his thing and of course everybody went ape shit. My girl Amina who was also visiting from Jersey expressed to me how amazed she was by the locals love for Luda.
When my black ass finally got there, Johnta Austin had just hit the stage. After putting the smack down on one particular security guard for giving me a hard time with my media credentials I got to the stage just in time to get some video footage.
In case you all don’t know, Johnta is from Southwest Atlanta. He’s written super hits for artists like Aaliyah, Mary J Blige, Mariah Carey, Tyrese, Chris Brown, and countless others. So though I had missed Ludacris, I felt that Johnta was a nice consolation prize, but boy was I wrong.
Though Johnta is blessed with the ability to write hit songs, his ability to move a crowd is extremely lacking. From the moment he hit the stage with his live band something about his stage presence was very mediocre. He moved back and fourth on the stage trying his best to make people interested in his performance but out of the entire crowd of, oh I’d say five to seven thousand people, only a handful seemed to seriously give a damn.
I know I am often times told that I can be jaded, a hater, so on and so fourth. So for that very reason I decided to bust out my camcorder and get it on record so you all can see for yourselves how much work he truly needs.
Johnta singing his hits (for other artists):
Johnta trying to perform his heart out:
Another thing I found interesting was Jermaine Dupri’s absence. It was rumored that Johnta and Jermaine were to perform on the stage together. While Jermaine has never been considered to be a crowd mover either, in terms of stage performance, it would have only added to Johnta’s own “performance†to have the legendary So So Def President in attendance. Could JD's nonappearance say something about Johnta's future as a recording artist under So So Def/Island?
After the diminutive song writer wrapped up his performance I made sure to stop him back stage to get a picture so you can all see who this kat is. In my mind I was filing it under the “whack artist†file.
I even told him as we shook hands “I wish you a lot of luck bruhâ€. He smiled and said “thank you†and went on his way. On the way out I noticed him taking pictures and signing autographs for his 5-10 fans. Again, I have video!!!
Don’t ask me anything about the NCAA outside of the entertainment aspect of it. I don’t watch college basketball.
Talk to y’all lata

yo jonta is hot. I 'm feelin his joint dope fiend. i hope that joint gets to come out. DUDE IS FIRYA
Sohh Gayant. u have to be the biggest homo blogger on Sohh. laying a smack down on security? really, 4 real? does that mean running around in a circle flapping ya fairy wings around until security is annoyed and lets u in?
Johnta is a very talented dude. u only showed film of 2 hits he's written, but he's written Grammy winning songs for Mariah Carey and Mary J. Blige. not to mention dude can sing his ass off. why u gotta be a hater for no reason? what did he do to piss u off? did he not take up your offer to come home with u that night, so u gotta shit on him today?
@Bobby Drake
You obviously have selective reading because I mentioned Johnta’s song writing ability. I also challenge my fans to come up with something a little more complex then the “homo thingâ€. I think we can all agree that throwing the homosexual jab in there is easily, reckless, and downright corny at this point.
I’m not hating on Johnta one bit. I went initially excited and found myself bored to tears. It is what it is, he needs to step his game up..PERIOD!
Ok ok...let me preface my statement by saying that I am a Johnta fan...
I think dude has MAD talent and is a forace in the R&B music scene..
With that being said, I have to ride with Gyant on this one...I was at the show and it was subpar at best...
That's not taking away from his talent, he just needs to step his performance up..i mean you on stage with Luda, LL, Maroon 5...his set just seemed thrown together thats all
next time try gettin some footage of topless chicks tossin bra's into the crowd, but unfortunately that wont happen til i get down there.
Sounds like Jonta is the perfect example of a talented musician/singer/song writer who can't perform or doesn't have any star quality/ "it". Being a musician isn't enough to make it to the top of the music industry, that is why we see people with no talent making big in the business because they have star quality, they know how to entertain.
J-Lo and Janet Jackson are two who come to mind as both of these lovely ladies can't really sing for shit, let's be honest here. But they are top notch performers and they have star quality, ask anyone who has seen Janet in concert and they will tell you that she's one of the best ever in her live shows.
Johnta will never evolve into a great performer who leaves you wanting more because that's not in his personality, he doesn't have "it" in him. But he is a talented artist who make some of the best music you ever heard and there's nothing wrong with that.
The real question is what the fuck are we gonna do since Glenwood Day got cancelled? Man, I had the motorcade all gassed up and ready to go, I had the bar-van fully stocked with the finest vintage and bubbly, the Hummer had about 3 pounds of Chronic in it, and then it motherfucking rained out our shit! The rain did get most the pollen off the vehicles, though, which gave me another idea: A bikini car wash! Whenever we reschedule Glenwood Day, I'm going to rent out a fire truck and get about 30 of the finest mixed hoes I can think of and they're gonna lather up you nigga's rides and detail them shits with their titties. Shit ain't free, though, expect to drop a Jackson if you want to see titties rubbin up against your side windows, if you want a lil somthing extra, you gotta give the bunnies the cabbage, nahmean?! Alright then, stay tuned, we'll see you wherever it may be. White Nigga Movement is for the community. Peace.

SOHH GYANT,
I'm one of the persons that normally questions why you seem to attack artists that may have slighted you in some way (Young Jeezy, Bobby Valentino, Bow Wow, etc.), but I have to give you credit for being able to silence us "haters" by providing actual footage of Johnta's (lackluster?) performance. I think you said it best - it is what it is. I have to give credit where credit is due. This was a good post.
a-yo, Johnta may be blessed with the ability to write hit songs but he aint ballin like me i just bought 24's for my 'lac~! ballin' hard, you can't even touch this like hammer. no dope slangin' ~ im net bangin' fo bucks, made my first 5g's in 3 weeks...check this out ~~~ http://making-mad-cash-with-google.blogspot.com
wtf? he can write but cant perform? thats like being superman and cant walk..ghey, you can use your song writing skills at http://www.found-mysearch.com // dem bizzels like doods who can sing, they all over that sh*t.
Yo, i'm going to have to agree with you on this one Gyant, i was there and it was lackluster. Shit, my and my girl were sitting down the whole time drinking beer cause this dude didn't give you the urge to get up. How was the luda concert though? what songs did he do? i missed it b/c of all the fuckin gator fans on marta slowing shit down. Go Buckeyes!

Yes, I was at the concert and his performance was not that great. However he is a new artist so it might not be comfortable with performing at this point. I'll give him another chance. @Gyant-Just because Jermaine did not perform with him may not have anything to do with his future as an artist...QUIT STARTIN S&*$.
Also it looks like that picture of TI was taking after his performance at the Tabernacle which was that fiyah!!
Damn Gyant
You fucking 6'8" and don't know shit about college B-Ball?
