We're Gonna Change The Pace A Little Bit On SOHH Atlanta Today: Hip-Hop:Beyond Beats And Rhymes

Posted on February 28, 2007 7:53 AM

With all the healthy discussion over Hip-Hop in mainstream media recently, and the proper or more less—improper way it’s influencing our society. I’ve searched the internet to find more subject matter to give my readers. Bottom line, he’s an activist.

BYRONE.jpg

Meet Byron Hurt. He’s an independent film maker who’s made a tight new documentary titled Hip-Hop:Beyond Beats And Rhymes. More than a filmmaker, Byron Hurt is an anti-sexist activist who provides cutting-edge male leadership, expert analysis, keynote addresses, and workshop facilitation in the field of sexual and gender violence prevention and education.

In his gripping new documentary that aired on PBS recently, Byron addresses the art form's problems with sexism, masculinity, violence, and homophobia.

The documentary is raw, and very much as real as it gets. He points out some key elements that Hip-Hop has instilled in many of us like:
1. You got to be Strong
2. You got to be Tough
3. You got have a lot of girls around you
4. You got have money
5. You got to be a Player or a Pimp
6. You got to be in control
7. You got to dominate other men and other people

And let’s face it, as far as Hip-Hop is concerned if you aren’t any of the things listed above, or at least the majority. Then you’re not a man. The brutha raises some interesting questions that should be addressed, maybe even to yourself.

Does the fantasy of a Black man that we hear about in Hip-Hop songs or see in Hip-Hop videos translate into reality? And if it does, then where does a Black man who doesn’t measure up to the characteristics mentioned above measure up in our society? Is he considered less then a man?

My goal in postings these heavy topics are to get a dialogue going between each other. We need to understand Hip-Hop better if we are ever to elevate ourselves to social awareness —yes?

How about our black brothers think about how stupid it is to be calling other blacks niggas and then maybe we'll get over that hump. See you on the other side.

  • This is an EXCELLENT documentary...
It's not an extended rap video type of documentary and it's definitely engaging from beginning to end.

I mentioned it on another SOHH site yesterday but no1 seemed 2 be familiar with it. I'm in Jersey and it has been on PBS Channel 11 a couple of times.

One of the most interesting parts of the documentary, 4 me,
is the blatant disrespect of Black women that we r all 2 familiar with.
The researcher is very thorough in his approach as he deals with everything.

Another moment was when Busta Rhymes immediately left out when he addressed "homosexuality and hip hop". It's kinda crazy 4 a brother 2 be afraid 2 even discuss a topic 4 fear of being labeled.

JADAKISS, who I used 2 like,

  • Peace People! Fact is Hip Hop is a cosmic stew that consist of many different life styles as well as perceptions of what is "REAL". Main stream pumps mostly all the negative images & situations, while the underground is the positive creative playground this music should be. We've got so caught up in "REAL" we forget that this is supposed to be fun & entertaining. I understand that people relate to certain situations, but were's the fun & happy side? I feel like we're in a state were if you seek you shall find. I don't know half of the songs on the radio/video station because I don't listen! We live in the information age & music is just that, so seek what you wish to be informed about & let the CD shine!~Hotep~

  • We need to realize Hip Hop is purchased 80% by whites. So in essence they control the music. Record companies don't focus on the Lupe's, and Mos Defs, because they know white people love that gangsta crack rap. Also its not just Hip Hop that subscribes to these theories. The Sopranos is about a man being strong, tough, with lots of women around him, having money, being in control and dominating other people. They killed Vito on the show cause he was homosexual. Nobody is in an outrage about that. Why does everybody focus on hip hop's negative and never the positive. Jay-Z got a water program, 50 is trying to work on condom program for aids awareness. All we care about is who's got beef with who.

I have to disagree, I think Jada was just being honest about what it takes to succeed in the game today. Jada realizes that the game is fucked up, but like he said, he just trying to feed his children without doing something illegal. He also made a good point, unfortunately positivity doesn't sell like negativity. Look at Cuurrtiss first album, there wasn't a positive to be found on the whole damn album and dude damn near went diamond(10xplat). At the end of the day hip hop is part of the entertainment industry and the bottom line of any business is to make as much money as possible.

  • I havent seen this particular documentary, but I can comment on the seven points listed above. Rather than adress them in HipHop terms, I will adress them from a real life standpoint and how they relate to HipHop..

    1. You got to be Strong - You do have to be strong. Not only to handle the pressures of everyday life, but to handle life period. If you arent strong and cant stand on your own two, then you have to lean on someone else to prop you up. Meaning you're a co-dependent and you probably wont take any chances or big steps unless you have someone there to help you along. This makes you most likely an unsuccessful person in the long run.

    2. You got to be Tough - This is debateable. You dont HAVE to be tough. But if you arent, at least around my way, you'll be exposed as bitchmade and either spend most of your time in the house, or getting your ass beat and pockets ran. Once again, you could side up and get protection.. but then you're a Ja Rule ass nicca getting extorted.

    3. You got have a lot of girls around you - This one isnt neccisarrily true that you HAVE to HAVE alot of Girls. Of course every guy WANTS alot of girls around him. Maybe the young people are swayed by rap videos, but songs like "Wouldnt Get Far" should show that these bitches arent around 24/7 and if they are, they only want something. In my hood you can see a golddiggin bitch from a mile. As Polow Da Don would say "Imma Break You Off, and thats AAAALLLLLLLLLL". This is the most crude of these seven I believe, but how else are you going to attract business and an air of success in the street if you have no girls or busted girls around you. Believe it or not, just like a trophy wife, its a measure of success in life and in the street.

    4. You got have money- Probably the most obvious. Everyone needs money. If you dont, you're either Bill Gates rich, or you're homeless. The more the better, Money makes the world go round. Period.

    5. You got to be a Player or a Pimp - Once again, this is something that all guys want.. but dont need. Every guy wants to get as much pussy as possible and thats just the way guys are wired. That and from the minute we can comprehend we are constantly barraded with sexual images and sexualized females. The fact that the sluts keep getting younger isnt helpin the kids either. Every guy thinks about being a player, or a pimp. IMO, like I, most that can attempt this do.. I.E. Having 2 or 3 girlfriends at the same time, ect. Is this hiphop's fault?? No... hiphop didnt create cheating. Its just male sexuality... where as a man is more of a "Stud" (as they called it BEFORE hiphop) based on how many girls he's slept with.

    6. You got to be in control - This one could be more elaborate, because in some way shape or form, we ALL, male or female want some kind of control. Control over our own destiny, control of our relationship, control of our business, money, ect. Being out of control isnt a comfortable feeling for ANYONE.. its like a saftey blanket for some people. On the other hand some people dont want control because they dont want to be found at fault.. IMO, Most guys wanna control everything around them whether they can or not. Control = Power and Power and Money are basicly the motive for most everything in this world. Ask President George W. Bitch.

    7. You got to dominate other men and other people - (Nullus) - If your talkin about being a boss, yeah.. because that comes back to control and power, something men have been seeking since the dawn of time. So as far as I can tell, see #6.

When you really break it down and get into it, these arent things that hiphop created. These MAY be things that HipHop glorify, but they are things that have been programmed into young males heads for thousands of years of conditioning and history. These are things that are probably in every (str8) Male personality and pych period. These things are all around us every day in different forms and noone stops to notice. But when they are glorfied in rap videos with half naked girls and black guys with millions of dollars, all the sudden its a problem. This is the White Media making you think that HipHop is fucking you up, or fucking something up period. Between commercialization, and the Fans of the genre questioning it instead of standing by it, maybe they are trying to kill hiphop. Who Knows??

  • Hip Hop takes the brunt of the blame for issues that existed for years before hip hop existed. Nobody blames crack rapology on the 80's America, that was led by the Reagan/Bush Administration. Nobody talks about the fact that BIG/Pac were not shot by other rappers. The things we face as black youth are what Hip Hop reflects. Sometimes life does imitate the art.But this art was developed as an outlet to express the life. Right now we got the no snitching campaign. If you tell the cops don't help you, and the hood will turn on you. If you don't you may see more people become victims of what you saw. Hip Hop is an art form but it is not indicative of all this generation represents.

Dana you have to keep in mind that most rappers don't have a formal education, so starting a record label from the ground up isn't exactly seen as a viable option, and even if they do start their own label they will need millions of dollars in order to succeed. In the world of payola DJ's and high priced videos it's not a given that they will be successful, besides any independant label has to sign a distribution deal with a major label to get their product to consumers. Also when you have black moguls who are just as shady as their white counterparts how can you not expect rappers to become disillusioned and just do what they got to do to survive and provide for they families.

I think we expect too much from rappers, we want them to be our modern day civil rights leaders, but most of these dudes used to slang drugs in the hood and will kill another black man if they get the urge, let them tell it atleast.

Take Jay-Z for example, everyone was all upset when the Nets(he has 1% ownership btw, yes 1%)gave the naming rights for their new stadium in Brooklyn to a bank that profited from the slave trade. People were saying Jay should speak out against this, but you know he's not for atleast two reasons. 1.) He doesn't want to rock the boat as the deal has had enough bad press 2.) Jay used to be a crack dealer, so what makes you think he really cares about the black community enough to fuck up his paper.

Rappers are entertainers, not civil rights leaders or leaders in general. The problem is at home, parents aren't showing their kids what a real role model should be. Parents should be pushing their kids to be the next Kenneth Chenault or Charles Drew, instead of the 50 Cent or Mike Vick.

Until we realize that there are other ways to be successful besides being some sort of an entertainer we will have the same problems.

For one, considering that SOHH is one of the most popular hip hop sites on the whole internet...I'm curious to know what kind of activism is SOHH involved in?

Is SOHH doing anything to give back, or is SOHH doing any type of community service in which we can be of support.

    Speak on it.

I know allhiphop supports and works with Kevin Powell a great deal up in NY to be active in giving back.

    What does SOHH do?

And this is not intended to bring hate, but to bring light to important things that SOHH are involved in...and if not, maybe to encourage that they do so.

  • LET ME MAKE THINGS CLEAR,

Hip Hop is more a reflection of society than it is an influence. No one can present any facts that society is worse now than it was before the hip hop explosion in the 90's and then show how hip hop is the cause. The reason that no one has presented any facts to support this claim is because there aren't any. The tough guy with money and a lot of girls has always been admired through out the history of man kind, that's not just hip hop thats life. These so called anti hip hop experts need to focus there attention on the real problems we face in society. SEXISM AND VIOLENCE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN APART OF OUR SOCIETY LONG BEFORE HIP HOP = AND THATS A FACT

  • EReal, I reposted your post and put my comments in there. The fact is, the promotion of all of these things within hip hop is undeniable...and instilling the thoughts of acceptability for the issues being accepted, or excused as caused by something else.

Example: If ants are tearing your foot up..what do you do? Do you just try and kill those ants, or do you try and kill that whole antbed over there. The ants didn't just appear, and they didn't even just originally come from that antbed. But to be effective, you need to destroy the antbed first, then look around for the cause of the reason that antbed propped up in the first place. Once you deal with those, then naturally...the ants are gonna vanish.

That is this dude's point. Hip Hop is the antbead, these knuckleheads out there are the ants. We address the antbed, be active in the surroundings, then the results will show. Christ Bless! -PZ

PZ: I feel you, but I do not believe that is the point. I believe the point being made is that hip hop builds a person up to believe that weakness is unacceptable, and THAT THOUGHT in itself...is unacceptable. It is IMPOSSIBLE to get ANYWHERE in life worth being, without the help of others. The promotion of the "tough" bravado in hiphop leads to the thought that if you aren't the toughest, then you are weak. And that is a lie from the devil. That is called PRIDE. Thinking you can do it all and are the best and do not need any help is DEFINETLY what leads to unsuccess in the real world, in the long run. AND it promotes separist views and does nothing to advance anything other than self. EXACTLY why the devil got the boot.

    2. You got to be Tough - This is debateable. You dont HAVE to be tough. PZ: Again...PRIDE. It is a sad fact that nowadays it is nearly impossible for a grown man to walk away from a situation where he is being disrespected. Jesus said to turn the other cheek. Now of course in real life it is harder putting that talk to the walk, but it should be our goal. Not what we are running from.

PZ: You are right, it is a trophy...and it is sad. That is the point the dude is making, for it to be a "trophy" to have that...that ain't right man. Truth be told, these women are daughters, sisters, mothers, etc. And the attitude of us men that to just "have women" around us, or being a pimp, or playa doin what ever...it's a disrespectful mindstate. We wouldn't take that nonsense around our mom, or grandmother...so why would we subject these women to that, who will one day be mothers and grandmothers themself. We do it for our own selfish reasons and it's not right. We do it because it makes us feel better. And THAT IS promoted in hip hop. Just look at the video. Or go to a strip club and see who everyone is watchin. Either the females dancin, or that cat at the table that has all the ladies at his talbe...and we thinkin "dang...that cat must be ballin, I wish some of them girls would come over here". I'm just sayin though...don't get caught up on the small examples I use, grasp the idea and the thought process behind it.

    4. You got have money- Probably the most obvious. Everyone needs money. If you dont, you're either Bill Gates rich, or you're homeless. The more the better, Money makes the world go round. Period.

PZ: That was a stupid answer you gave homey. Are you Bill Gates? Then are you homeless? The point being made is that hip hop promotes materialism. You tell me why else at age 16 I was tryin to save all my money to put some hydros on my thunderbird? And the fact is...I'm happier now making just enough to take care of my family than I was living like a fool with a pocket full of green. Money is a necessity only as far as what is necessary. Anything more than payign the bills, gettin groceries and setting aside for retirement is extra. Hip Hop promotes a lifestyle which is out of reach to probably 90% of the people that put these hip hoppers in the position to afford that lifestyle in the first place. It's a fictional way of life except for a select few, and then you have those that try and front like they are that so that they feel apart of the trend. Phony-ism.

PZ: Hip hop did not create it, but hip hop is the #1 force pushing it. Outside of hip hop, what other life factor promotes these ideas. I didn' say "where else do they exist", I said "who else promotes it". That is the point..it is pushed by hip hop.

Bitch.

PZ: That is the problem with humans in general, not accepting the fact and realizing that in reality we are in control of nothing. God is. He either causes it or allows it. Hip Hop promotes that one is accountable to self, and that morals are determined by one's own judgement and how far that individual is willing to go to get where they want to be. It also goes back to pride as previously mentioned.

    7. You got to dominate other men and other people - (Nullus) - If your talkin about being a boss, yeah.. because that comes back to control and power, something men have been seeking since the dawn of time. So as far as I can tell, see #6.

PZ: See my other replies in response to "PRIDE".

When you really break it down and get into it, these arent things that hiphop created. These MAY be things that HipHop glorify, but they are things that have been programmed into young males heads for thousands of years of conditioning and history.

PZ: The blog said these are things that are "instilled". That does not mean created, it means promotes...condones, constantly barrages you with until it is accepted as expected and common practice. Hip hop does that and no hip hopper can deny it. They can try and justify it, they can try and reason it and excuse it, but they can not deny it.

    PZ: BULLSHIT.

Between commercialization, and the Fans of the genre questioning it instead of standing by it, maybe they are trying to kill hiphop. Who Knows??

    PZ: More BULLSHIT
