Wednesday night CNN’s Paul Zahn did a special on Hip-Hop, asking the question: "Is it art or is it poison?" While the argument remains a constant discussion around water coolers, radio shows, and open forums, Hip-Hop is a multi billion dollar industry, selling one in 5 CD’s. White Americans make up over 80% of Hip-Hop CD and concert sales, while Latino’s and African-American’s make up the remanding 20%. Last year the Hip-Hop industry made 47 billion dollars, proving that the genre has a huge impact on the recording industry and society as a whole.
Though there are many aspects to Hip-Hop like party rap, gospel rap, social awareness rap, and inspirational rap. The most visible aspect is the overtly sexual and misogynistic rap that seems to dominate the billboard charts. And, that’s where the "question" arises.
Where as a people and a society do we draw the line on the ultra violent, and often times misogynistic rap music that in some ways influence our youth? What we tend to see in rap videos today, are repetitive views of women being seen as sex kittens, or sexual play things. However, others raise the argument that non Hip-Hop publications like Maxim, FHM, or Playboy contribute to societies disrespectful views on woman just as much as Hip-Hop does.
V103 radio personality Frank Ski, from The Frank Ski and Wanda Morning Show, brought up some very interesting points while discussing this issue on an open panel yesterday morning with rapper Yung Joc, Monica, Chuck D, and Paula Zahn. While he appreciates the subject matter being discussed, he’s also disheartened by the fact that it had to be raised by "blond haired, blue eyed Paula Zahn". He has wanted to discuss this topic for years but former managers of the station had forbid him from talking about this issue as it directly affects the music they play and ultimately their bottom dollar. But with the old management team no longer standing in his way, he’s brought the issue along with CNN to the forefront.
I think the discussion is very relevant to today’s society. Do I think that Hip-Hop is an often times violent culture—sure. But do I blame Hip-Hop for directly affecting our youth in a negative way—no. If you take Hip-Hop out of the equation, you’ll see that with prime time television, cable television, various media outlets, and the World Wide Web, all forms of media have an equal amount, if not more of an influence on our children.
Contrary to how many people feel, Hip-Hop is not at fault alone. But I want to pose the question to you. Do you feel that Hip-Hop is an improper influence on today’s youth?
The minute I get some video from the special and some more bonus information I will post it.
Have A Great Weekend,

What about all the violence in movies and what not? The movie, "The Departed" is probably going to win an Oscar this weekend and what what it about? Racist Irish gangsters. Murdering and killing. I guess it's ok to glorify that, but at the same time talk down on Luda for winning a Grammy. Look at The Sopranos. Critically acclaimed drama is what they call it. The only difference is the skin color of the people putting it out. Shit makes me sick. Like the numbers state, white folks buy 80% of it anyway. These are the same white folks that scream racism is dead when I live in this skin every day.
first!! responsibility lies with the parents. it's all in how you raise a child. hip-hop can be an improper influence, but it's not as devastating as an absent parent, an abusive household, or just being poor feeling there are no options. hip-hop tells a story, be it good or bad. it can also be inspirational. jay-z gets a lot of flack, but read this line off of "dope man" on vol.3: "blindfolded expected to walk a straight line/mind molded, taught to love you and hate mine/ climbed over it." now if that isn't inspirational i don't know what is. people should stop blaming hip-hop for everything wrong with society and start taking personal and social responsibility themselves. hip-hop is everywhere. mcdonald's, sporting events, billboards, etc. if something is so bad, why is everyone banking off it? it can't be too bad. all in all, responsibility lies within the household. give children more of an option than videos, video games, and running the streets. show them how to be responsible and become productive.

He'll yeah. they got these lil niggas actin homo-thugish and wanting to be like Jeezy before they even know who Barak Obama or Russel Simons is. And they got these gurls lookin at video's thinkin that they are suppose to be wearin small clothes and lettin niggas poor drinks on them. But all that can be countered with responsible parents that let them know that the life rappers portray in video's aint real, and those actions come with serious consequenses.

You my nigga, SOHH GYANT, but now that I think about it, it WASN'T a good idea to bring this topic to light. I mean, I'm promoting an artist that talks about KILLING, CRACK DEALING, and FUCKING BITCHES THAT'S HIV POSITIVE WITH NO RUBBER! Yesterday, I had forgotten all about that NEGATIVE stuff that I'm feeding to my own culture. But it's the INBRED WHITEY'S FAULT for MAKING ME make music this way! They told me they'd only promote my artists if it was about GUNS, DRUGS, and UNPROTECTED SEX WITH BITCHES THAT'S HIV POSITIVE! Man, is there any way to remove this post because now that I think about it, I'm a walking contradiction and I don't rep the REAL HIP HOP very well. I mean, for GOD SAKES, I hang with a dude that's named BUNCH-A-BRAINS and he doesn't even get hand jobs much less brains from these bitches! I'M SORRY ATL, I LET YOU DOWN!

I will just say yes it is up to the parents but when society sees the same ole bullshit cats jumpin around glorifying thug life, dealin drugs ,women sellin themselves short you have to understand that this helps mainstream america with all the profiling of our people, its already bad enough that we only get crap roles in hollywood..And we do this all for "sales" "the dollar bill" so how can you get upset when a blond hair blue eye host of some show comments in the fashion she does when thats all she is fed visually at some point in time we have to take responsibilty for our actions and stop pointing the finger with the "well what about them!"
Hip - Hop has turned into drug dealer propaganda if you ask me. I live at Uptown, NYC (re-up town) and the culture of drug dealers is devistating our hood. You know in the 60's and 70's every body wanted to be a revolutionary and in the 80's when the Medellin Cartel distributed cocaine with the help of the CIA and Ricky Ross all over the USG (United States of the Ghettos) thats when hip-hop started and gangstas took over the communties. These rappers (commercial) praise the gangstas like they are gods. Fuck the gangsta and thugs and anybody devistates the inner citys with poison. The revolution is comming and you thugs better start running!!!! Che and Fidel through out gangstas, hustlas, pimps and mafia men first cuase they knew that they will morally corrupt the youth into becoming world leaders and scholars.
Excuse me, morally corrupt them into ignorant fools who sell out their own to make a dollar. Why is it that MTV, BET and radio are quick to play some "gangsta shit" but wont paly some consious music? Becuase they think that the urban audience is dumb and they dont think outside the box. If someone says that that consious music doesnt sell is lying because Public Enemy was selling platinum like crazy in the 80's and Micheal Moore sold like 200 million copies of Farenheight 911 and Bill Maher and John Stewart have high rated show talking about politics 24/7. There is a huge market for consoius rap but I think the people upstairs have watered down hip hop becuase of its power over the urban people. We are in a time of war and we all have to obey
l can`t believe that all ya niggaz actually try to debae or argue about hiphop being a negative force on youth. Whether movies and other shit do it too, hiphop is killing our society period. Probably a little bit of Common or Kwali could be positive, but we never to hear that on the radio or TV. lf l could go taliban on all these niggaz who rap about coke, bitches and being gangsta and killing, pulling guns out and all that shit, they all would have blown up in their tour buses. Listen to the so called God MC, Jay Z, he has never had any song that is positive and never said any senible thing in his life, yet is helmed to be the King. l love black people, but niggaz make me sick, and by the way l`m black, so don`t even think it.
As long as there is a market for it that type of hip-hop will live. Hip-hop is the least of this countries problems anyways.
@ SOHH Atlanta & Hip~Hop Headz
Did everyone see the CNN Special Last Night about Hip Hop??? Art or Poison??? And 55% of the people voted that hip~hop was poison and not art, as this is a hip~hop blog... THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN DISCUSSED!!!! IN DETAIL... We hear so many negative things about hip~hop but we never see the positive things...

@ SOHH Atlanta & Gyant
I apologize for the false propaganda posted under my name above, but today i'm not gonna let someone who I will give no shine at all stop what I have to say...
Hip~hop is by no means poison, and to them same Bastards trying to slander my name and by now we all know who that is... "WATCH BASTARDS OF THE PARTY"
The REVOLUTION will not be televised, but it will broadband across the world...
Hip~hop has a problem with the powers that be exploiting us, and showing us in a negative light the media has a way of tweaking the facts to make us appear very bad, they blame us for gangs (1st publicly noticed gang in America was called the Spook Hunters) not the Bloods and Crips, or GD's or Lords, they portray or women as slutty, golddiggers, and our youths as drugged out thugs who can only sell drugs or tote the rock, and all we can do on a daily basis is them catagorizing and labeling ourselves the way the media does...
If hip~hop is poison like I said yesterday then all art is poison we started this culture and we embrace it like "NO OTHER"
THIS IS OUR CULTURE WE HAVE MADE IT SUCCESSFUL, WE HAVE TAKEN THIS FROM THE HOODS & ALLEYS OF THE SOUTH BRONX TO MAINSTREAM RADIO AND SPREAD OUT OVERSEA'S, WE HAVE MADE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS HELPED PEOPLE WHO WOULD OTHERWISE BE STILL IN THE STREET HUSTLING OR POSSIBLY KILLING THEIR OWN PEOPLE IN THE STREETS... "HIP~HOP IS NOT POISON, WHAT'S POISON IS THE FACT THAT THEY BRING THINGS LIKE THIS POINT OF VIEW UP TO DISCREDIT US AND OUR CULTURE THAT THEY HAVE EMBRACED AND COPIED AND STILL MAKE THE MOST MONEY FROM... HIP~HOP IS NOT POISON ITS THE CURE UNTIL WE CAN RECOGNIZE ARTIST LIKE COMMON, DEAD PREZ, MOS DEF, BUNCH~A~BRAINS, TALIB KWELI, AND ALL THE OTHER ARTIST THAT TALK ABOUT SOMETHING OF SUBSTANCE INSTEAD OF ALL THIS BULLSHIT THAT THEY PLAY ALLDAY ON THE RADIO...
"HIP~HOP AIN'T DEAD, IT'S ALIVE AND KICKING IT'S TIME FOR REVOLUTION"
BIG SHOUTS TO: Chuck~D, Michael Dyson, Frank~Ski, and all the brothers who stood up and spoke up for us when it counted...

Im from Brooklyn and grew up around coke in weed before i knew they was drugs, even though i grew up like that my MOTHER told me it was WRONG, i got accustom to hearing gun shots and shit but my MOTHER told me get my education, i say that to say this it doesnt matter where u live or whats around you as a PARENT you have to say to yourself am i gonna raise my kid(s) or let the TV and SOCIETY raise my kids. Americas entertainment has always been about SEX,DRUGS and MUSIC.
so stop blaming and parents be a damn filter to your kids
BLACK PEOPLE STAND DA FUCK UP!!!!!!

Do you feel that Hip-Hop is an improper influence on today’s youth?
Naw, parents just gotta stand up and be parents. let these youngins know that bullshit they see on BET and those other networks is all entertainment. Hip-hop, rap, black music in general gets blamed for all the bad. But when they do some good the shit get put on the back pages or brushed aside as if it was some kinda tax write-off.
Gyant, good blog dude. even though we (myself included) been calling for your head.
What's next chemical warfare?? Flood the hood with more drugs?? kill two rival gang memebers?? Look at these jackasses posting under my name with my myspace account... BROOKLYN STAND DA FUCK UP!!!!!!
I am a die hard HIP HOP fan that goes back to the Crush Groove days and I have watched the evolution and growth of HIP HOP. Admit it or not MUSIC period has an influence over people and especially our youth. Yes movies and other media outlets influence us as well but none as much as HIP HOP Music. It is a scientifical fact that those that listen to violent/gansta rap music are 7 times more likely to turn violent then any other form of music or entertainment. Gansta music encourages and glorifys drug use, violent behavior, and care free attitudes which in turn is destroying our youth and urban black communities. For what ever reason we as black people are in a state denial when it comes to this subject. Since the birth of mainstream gansta rap music black youth have become more violent then ever before. We are killing ourselves with this music and culture but our ignorant stubborn pride want let us admit it! We are becoming a race of Gansta Niggas and loosing our sense of being proud black people. Since the birth of gansta music the black death total has tripples, incarceration has doubled and drug use is out of control.
@KING KONG
You dont think unemployment, single parent household, police corruption/profiling/beatings and killings, drugs and guns, the killing of anything positive in the hood contribute to that?
lets be real "KING KONG" everything u stated been here B4 hip hop was born, the only thing is now AMERICA gotta hear it
BROOKLYN U KNOW WHAT IT IS
Gyant, you tryna say asians dont listen to hiphop?
Anyway, sure its negetive. So are rock songs about killing everyone in your school and fuck the government. So are movies and tv shows that promote violence and sexism and racism. So are lots of things.
Im not going to go into much detail because Ive posted on this argument like 5 fuckin times around the net.
Suffice to say that when White America points a finger at a culture or a demographic, or even hiphop, it has the other 3 fingers pointing right back at it. Its the white people that control the radio and tv so they decide what gets airplay, not us. The whitey A&Rs have to approve the CDs before they are released and even CENSORED some tracks from Buck's cd (fuck the police). They control all this shit and then they wanna point the finger at us. Yeah right they, LIKE ALWAYS, are just looking for a scapegoat to blame all the shit that THEY fuck up on us. Them and the Parents. Parents, get on your job and stop raising immoral, indecent, pieces of shit.
1 hunned.
We can't even blame hip-hop music for these issues. Hip-hop isn't about any of that. We all knwo the elements of hip-hop and none of them are "murder", "drug dealing", or "misogyny". So quit blaming it on hip-hop. Let's blame it on people. hip-hop is the gun, but it can't shoot a nigga. niggas shoot niggas.
As for white people complaining about the music, those complaints aren't even legitimate. if a fellow black person brings up the issues, I listen, but when a white person does, I ain't got shit to say to them, cuz the labels are only gonna put out what they know sells. And who are they selling to? white folks. They can't complain about something if it's what they want )obviously if they're buying 80% of the albums, negative hip-hop is what they want). So when whitey stops buying the albums, their complaints will become legitimate.
as for our kids wanting to go out and imitate what they see, that's an IQ issue. monkey see monkey do. If your kid wants to be like Jeezy or another one of them rappers (or if you yourself wants to), that's a brain power issue. Need to read a book or something.
Oh, one more thing: I ain't trying to hate or nothin', but if you're gonna try to post some knowledge on a blog like this (trying to empower our people), could you please spell right? I understand that sometimes you typing too fast and you might mess up a word like switching some letters around or something. that's not a problem. but please don't come on here talking about "how they portray hiphop culture so it might be over EXATURATED". Dude...spell check. the word is "exaggerated". Eek.
Now you see where Jay was going with Kingdom Come and why Nas teamed up with him, because they have the pull to bring Hip Hop to a new height by growing it up...
If these consious rappers want to get heard, they need to promote more for the cause and for God Sakes get better beats...Look what happened to Common off of Kanye beats and he still spit the same, and became a mainstrean household name...that's not selling out, that's getting to the status where you can reach more people with your message...
That's how we can turn this around, when all these icons get together and start making money together and portraying other things other than women and bling...like geting a home before a chain or fixing your crdit to own Black Cards...and encouraging owning bars, coffee shops intead of the latest dubbed out buggy...
Hip Hop is not poison it is what we know, these rappers are telling us stories of what they live or what they are striving to get to...now if they get there, they can flip the message and be like Jay and tell you that it does not make sense to own more baggettes while living at home with mommy...
Hip Hop is our refuge, our expression, we can dictate it anyway we want...
the negative side of hiphop wasn't anything for CNN to worry about until the white kids in the burbs started listenin and actin like they favorite rappers. At first they only showed PAC when he got in trouble on CNN and he became the face of all of hiphop. for every 1 good thing hiphop has done the white media highlights 10 bad ones.
I THINK THAT HIPHOP IS AN ART FORM THESE PEOPLE DON'T SAY NOTHING ABOUT ROCK AND ROLL AT ALL ITS... ALSO I LIKE DAT BOY AIM SONG THIS MY YEAR I HEARD IT ON TJSDJS.COM MY YEARRRRR
I think that CNN isn't asking the right question. When I was watchin the specials, when they spoke of hip-hop, they showed a lot of 50 Cent, Eminem, Nelly... like they are the best representations of hip-hop. In a sense they are all hip-hop, but they aren't the only type of hip-hop artists. And, in many cases they don't stand for what hip-hop was supposed to be about. Hip-hop was started in NY as an expression of the pain of the streets, as well as an outlet for blacks to get away from the reality of the hoods for a little bit. If u listen to songs like "Rappers Delight" or "It's like a Jungle Out there...", you'll understand what hip-hop started out as. Then Run DMC came and showed the fashionable side of people from NYC at that time. They made the 'hood' look cool. But, they still lived in the poverty and pain of our streets. Then, the West Coast gave u hip-hop in the form of what is really going on in these streets. They were rapping about the gangsta shit, the police brutality, the women that did not have high morals. This is what the West brought to the game, the reality of black America in its purest form. Then, the 90's came, and hip-hop started gettin bigger. In the 90's, there was a variety of hip-hop gettin played on the radio. U could hear a song like 'Gin and Juice' and then the next song would be something like 'They Reminisce Over You'. There was balance. When Big and Pac got killed, that's when hip-hop really started to get commercial. If u recall, the ones that were hot right after their deaths were Puff and Master P. Two niggaz that couldn't rap, but they were great businessmen. Then Jay-Z came and took over because he had the talent as well as the business savvy. But, Jay wanted to be a superstar and not just a rapper. His best album was Reasonable Doubt. That was hip-hop. But, in order for him to get continuous spins he started making commercial albums. Hard Knock Life Vol. 2 was his most popular album. And, that's when hip-hop got commercial. Before Jay, there were individuals. After Jay, niggaz started to clone because they wanted to be on the radio. They stopped making hip-hop albums, and started makin 15 singles and tryin to portray them as albums. That started to take away from the balance of hip-hop. Labels were concerned with radio play, that they didn't care if artists made quality albums. Artists chose money over good songs and that is the labels fault. To sum things up, Corporate America made the protrayal of hip-hop what it is today. And white America made hip-hop artists talk about the things they talk about. The artists that are signed are usually from the 'hood'. All of the 'hoods' in America have a crack epidemics. Crack was brought into our neighborhoods by government. Before crack, blacks cherished one another. They respected each other. Imagine if hip-hop started in the 60's. They wouldn't rap about killing and selling drugs. But, once crack hit the scene, things changed. Blacks started to kill each other, care only about themselves and not about the community. And that's where we are at today. So, before questioning hip-hop, question why do rappers talk about the things they talk about. Then ask, y is it that they are from in environments that make them see things like that. The shit that rappers talk about has been going on before hip-hop.
Hip Hop is not poison and if so why are the minority of consumers being affected by the poison. The issues that we have in society were there before this art form and will be there after. It's easier to blame hip hop because the culture is unapologetic; as it should be. This country was founded on shady principles and practices hip hop broadcast the results of those dealings. I think certain parts of hip hop need to be more accountable for their actions however if my only options are art and poison definitely ART. Good look Gyant.
Your posing this question to people who dont have kids obviously so they respond overly defensive and say its the parents fault etc etc. Hip hop WILL influence your kids like anything else no matter how good of a parent you are, just a fact, its everywhere now and kids are impressonable by nature. Yeah you must and can set a good example but kids grow up and go their own way anyway, thats life...if you shelter some kids they rebel at some point, thats life. Hip hop is strictly about partying right now...a kid magnet. And hip hop now doesnt give much room for a child to develop or think beyond the thought of clubbin, cars, bitches & money, and kids ARE impressionable to all of that, cause its fun. Then this new breed of moraless rappers who are just tryin to get paid and will exploit WHATEVER, as long it pays, they play their part by tryin to fit the hustler image and talk about all of these things that the kids fall for. Its a big fucked up circle that will never end because money has turned into a trend. I read alot of cats from the south and from NY or whatever who got so much hate about whos running the game. ALL REGIONS are "running" hip hop into the ground and the fact this white lady is questioning it means that hip hop probably reached her kids too and thats the last straw!! but how do you defend this shit now? it aint like break dancing no more, no more whop, no more cabbage patch. Little girls dance like strippers to songs that traditionally strippers everywhere would dance to aka booty music, and its EVERYWHERE now in every song, how do you defend that shit? really? Its not even covered up, its blatent. Niggas do act like and say in full detail they flip oh's...how in the world do we defend the shit like used to be able to do with ease?
1 more thing, america was fucked up long before hip hop came into play, but the fact that its so in demand and making so much money it becomes the automatic punching bag for any discussion when it comes to kids, morality and society in america. Is what it is. We still dont help the issue no matter the excuse, there is no fuckin way to defend certain songs. Its so over the top ignorant sometimes that its hard to believe that all this is actually happening this way...

Is it bad that I had sex last night and it got really loud so I kept my roomates up?
sorry, just had to get that off my chest. On to the topic, sure hip-hop influences the younger crowd but so do movies, teachers, parents, friends, and other types of music. Don't act like the death metal kids and marylin manson kids don't do some fucked up shit too. (Trench coat mafia??) I think it has to start at the home, if you provide a stable, safe environment were you teach kids how to make right choices and how to stand up for their beliefs then they can love hip hop for its entertainment value and not for the negative aspects. Much love to my black brotha from anotha DJ OKTOBA for President. 1.
-Matt Herbz- WNM07!
More bad influences on todays kids:
1. Bush
2. WNM07
3. Chamo from I love New York
4. King of the Burbz
5. Paris Hilton
6. Dick Cheney
7. Osama Bin Laden
8. Chavez
9. Tyree from the Real World
10. Kevin Federline
race dosen't matter, anyone who can honestly say that the majority of mainstream rap isnt destructive is a fool. they got rock songs that are negative but the percentage of those songs being played is nowherre close to the amount of gangsta rap. It seems like the blame should be on the blacks who dont step up and say nothin, they just let the repetitive nigga, ho and crack talk be the accepted form of expression. Frank ski can say what he wants but he play that stupid shit everyday, then try to act concerned. Black people need to say fuck the message they sending cause in reality the same white kids that buy the rap actually go to school and work, they dont plan on being career hoodlums like us black kids who wanna sell dope and rap for a living
The notion that hip hop is the cause of the problems that society is facing is pointless and there are no facts to support this ridiculous theory. TODAY MORE BLACK YOUTH ARE GOING TO COLLEGE, BLACK ON BLACK CRIME IS DOWN, BLACK WOMEN ARE MORE RESPECTED IN THE WORK PLACE NOW THAN EVER.
IF HIP HOP WAS SUCH A POISON THEN SOCIETY WOULD BE WORST NOW THEN IT WAS BEFORE HIPHOP BECAME SO POPULAR. Of course there are still way to many issues that we face today but, no more than we did before hip hop. If you want to talk about some real issues LETS TALK ABOUT THE EFFECT OF CRACK COCAINE IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY, LETS TALK ABOUT SOME MEN LEAVING WOMEN TO RAISE KIDS ON THEIR OWN, LETS TALK ABOUT THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM TURNING ITS BACK ON THE INNER CITY YOUTH, LETS TALK ABOUT HOW THE CIA HELPED CRACK GET INTO THE BLACK COMMUNITY
THEY DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT THAT, THEY WANT TO TALK ABOUT WHAT SOME RAPPER SAID IN A RAP SONG
Mainstream American Hip-Hop is poison.
If parents and family members would step up and be role models instead of expecting tv and movies to teach thier kids then there would be no discussion. This shit is entertainment. If you dont like it, dont spend your money on it and turn the damn channel. I love hip hop. The good the bad and the ugly. If I dont like it, I dont listen to it. Yes it would be nice if we had more females representing like Mc Lyte, Queen Latifah, and Monie Love but we as consumers have to buy it to show coporate America thats what we want but if whites are the ones buying music then we are doomed because they like to see us put on a minstrel show. Hey I would rather see Jeezy on tv with video hoes then at a stop light with a gun to my head jacking me for my car. Money has to be made and hip hop has provided a way to eat.
White Americans make up over 80% of Hip-Hop CD and concert sales, while Latino’s and African-American’s make up the remanding 20%. Last year the Hip-Hop industry made 47 billion dollars, proving that the genre has a huge impact on the recording industry and society as a whole.
^^^^^^^^
WE dont buy the records, and we dont make money off it. These niggas is suckin our hoods dry for all the culture, just to sell to some whiteboy in Iowa who is obsessed with 50 cent and his "urban tales".
The problem with white people is they think any black rap is "hip Hop". Mainstream rap isnt hip hop. Its as sorry as pop music from any other genre. These crackers aint checkin for Lupe, Immortal Tech, Mos, Talib, not even Nas, because they dont fit the coon mold that sells in the mainstream.....WHO IN HERE ACTUALLY THINKS WHITEBOYS WANT TO LISTEN TO THAT BLACK REVOLUTION/BLACK POWER/UPLIFT THE PEOPLE SHIT???????? they dont... and they parents wont buy it for them.... sheet, in the hood they dont even listen to that shit....niggas dont wanna do anything more than get money............black people are sooooooooo stupid, cause we will sell out our whole family just for a buck.... tell the worst parts of our family history with no self pride, say all you are is a dope dealin, gangbangin porch monkey, and then we get mad when they treat us like dope dealin, gangbangin porch monkeys!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we need progressive independent record labels willin to take a chance on an artist "outside the box". You will never see Immortal tech or another "conscious" artist get major airplay, but "makin it rain on them hoes" plays 100 times a day......and fuck that excuse of "this is the way it really is". EVERYBODY AN THEY MOMMA KNOW HOW FUCKED UP THE HOOD IS!!!! niggas aint doin shit to change it, they just poor pimpin. Jay has upwards of 350 million dollars, just 3 million could go into rebuilding HIS old Brooklyn neighborhood.
Shit is always as it was in America.....in the old days, white people used to dress in blackface and do black stereotypes....NOW WE DO IT OURSELVES......labels scramble for the next "authentic" story, which is usually a fake story, which means niggas is coonin up for that paper!!!!!!!! "dance, niggers, dance **throws a twenty on the floor** dance, nigger!!!" and the only thing most niggas would say is "HOW FAST BOSS???"

Damn, that last paragraph from Trap or Die (ironic name considering the topic...) is gonna reverbrate in my mind every time I hear a song on the radio now. I'm not worried about this though. I just came to a great realization. We all know hip-hop goes through phases. people were mad when gangsta rap became mainstream, we were mad when bling was the shit, and now we're mad when trapping and bubble gum is what's in.
but history repeats itself. everything comes full circle. i know ya'll noticed the kind of buzz artists like lupe fiasco and little brother got in '06. the jeezys and such got the spins and the sales, but everything starts small. nobody, and i mean NOBODY just comes in with a a brand new movement and sweeps the charts their first try. look out for the next albusm from lupe, little brother, etc. etc. common did it big too last year. i think we're gonna get back to true, positive hip-hop sooner than we think.
nobody, and i mean NOBODY just comes in with a a brand new movement and sweeps the charts their first try.

@Brooklyn
Your absolutely correct it has been here before the HIP HOP culture but not any were near the magnitude it is today. Check the statics before Gansta Rap and after and you will see an extreme sharp increase in black on black violent behavior and over all violent behavior.
To give you an example of how hip hop influence the youth....just look at Jay-Z and button ups shirts. Young black males were spending hundreds of dollars on throw back jerseys until Jay-Z said I don't wear jerseys I'm 30+ give me a fresh pair of jeans and a button up. Eveybody immediately stop wearing jerseys and start wearing button ups. The same goes for Paul Wall in grillz and 3-6 mafia with tear the club up. Niggas start tearing the club up.
It was a time when dudes would go to the club just to dance with a chic but after I think ICE CUBE said real nigga down dance....nigga started stop dancing and started standing and mean mugging each other. As I said there are some other influence as well but HIP HOP is the main influence. See HIP HOP is a life style that is influenced by music. HIP HOP is not just the music it self. HIP HOP is cool but GANSTA rap got us acting like crazed monkeys!
King Kong you are an idiot assface. The crime rate didnt increase because of gangsta rap, it was because of crack and crack related activities......and the biggest increase in crime wasnt from "gangsta rap", it was from blacks being given civil rights!!!! real talk, niggas went wild once we could!!!!
ima say this people need to stop blaming and take responsibility 4 the choices they make aint nothin wrong w/ puttin black woman in videos it gives them jobs but how they dress and act on the set is on them but it sends a bad message to our future mothers/wives also ery damn video aint gotta be the same. this is a li off the subject but it makes a valid point, how can a grown ass man kiss anotha grown man on the lips then they claim its a black mafia thing and its ok muthafuckas was actually sayin its cool 2 kiss 4 a check these niggas need to grow a pair fast. let me finish up not only kids who see this look up 2 the dirty dreadlock these otha muthafuckas gon see it and think all black men greet eachother that way shit is gettin outta control
TraporDie,
You don't know what the fuck your talking about or what I'm talkin about! I DIDN'T say it was the largest increase but there was an EXTREME large increase in the crime rate. That is an absolute statistical fact! Now take that GED knowledge your trying to spit and kick rocks!
Ignorant niggas breed ignorant niggas!
just something real quick to think about:
"their" issue is with the coke rap, violent rap etc., right? well, while some of it is over the top, let's go back and talk about why rappers are rappin about this. once upon a time there was a president named reagan, who in spite of all of his 'drug free' campaigns, PURPOSESLY put coke and crack in disenfranchised areas for no real reason other than to put more black people in jail (even though he might say to catch the south american kingpins). so let's fast-forward to today, where crack STILL cripples the black community to this day, and is the basis of alot of problems we have with and in society. art is an imitation of life. thanks to reagan and his people, life, for a great portion of minorities, IS the crack game and such. so really, how dare they say some fugazi ish like this and not think to bring up where some of these issues began.
now, that fact does not dismiss us from taking responsibility and overcoming, but keep in mind that while others can run the race without any extra weight on their shoulders, we have to do everything with a 300lb gorilla on our backs and keep up.
keep grinding! good blog gyant.
im tired of people always talking about how rap is so bad and rap is making kids do this, that, an the other. parents are the ones who are supposed to be the one looking out to see what they kids are doing and how they acting, and are supposed to be the 1st ones on that ass when they not doin what they supposed to. jeezy and wayne didnt have sex and make your kids. you did. start playing your roles grown ups. and the only reason paula zahn is bringing this shit up is because them white kids is all outa control. i seen that shit on maury and i seen this shit on dateline nbc. they be havin fight clubs and shit and be out doin what the hell ever so rap music is the one to blame when white parents cant keep billy and suzie in check. and alot of niggas is tellin stories in they rhymes because at some point that was their life and they gona wana talk about it, and some kids relate directly to that. and alot of black youth cant look up to so called "positive role models" because they dont care about us, quick to shut us down and shut us out, and they be out doin the same bull shit they tell us not to do,but then they go talkin about how we need to get ourselves together. prime examples are bill cosby and jesse jackson. then frank ski dont need to be commentin on shit because he make himself look stupid by sayin he wanna be positive and help the community but his ass is always at club 112 wit osei the dark secret, and he be playin some inspirational vitamin, then he go back to playin make it rain, money maker and shit, and i heard he was a dog. this is why black youth dont look up to "positive role models", half of yall are full of shit.

The biggest problem facing black America right now is the failure to admit and face the facts when it comes to our race. The moment someone puts a mirror in our face and shows us how we really look with turn away and get mad and start attacking them. As much as I love and enjoy listening to Gansta Rap music, I know it encourages self destruction! As a result of Gansta Rap music our youth emulate and glorfy being thugs, dope boys, killers, gang bangers, bad bitches and gansta. We as a race of people are committing the large majority the violent crimes in this country and yet and still we ignore or refuse to except that Gansta Rap is destroying our race. We are feeling up grave yards and prison like its a game but yet and still we want except the facts. Yes parents are ultimately responsible for their children but we as a VILLAGE are also responsible for the up bring of our youth. Fuck what the white lady said on CNN....black leaders have been talking about this for the last 8 years! I love HIP HOP and BLACK PEOPLE but I hate GANSTA RAP and NIGGAZ!
Man look how one question got us all tripping on eachother. Cats talking about killing, raping and hating eachother and never even met before. The question was "Is hiphop to blame for socities ill's" well I say NO. The boy fasteddie made a good point it starts with the parents, hiphop is in a way like a family and just like any other family your going to have those fucked up aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters. It can't be blamed for something thats been going on before its inception, but it must be held accountable for not what it puts out there but how it puts it out there, rap is a art, no matter how you wanna argue it or look at it, its nothing but poetry to a beat. Rappers get on TV or records saying they're not rappers they're hustlers and gangsters well get out of rap then nigga go bang go hustle. While your claiming to be everything but a rapper your putting poison i the ears of the have nots, they listening to every word your saying, "I aint a rapper, I hate these rap niggas" get the fuck out of here. If you make money off of selling drugs your a drug dealer, if you make money off of selling cars your a car dealer, if you make money off of rapping, guess what asshole your a rapper. It aint hiphop thats fucked up its the niggas in it, leave that street shit in the streets be a reporter but if you make it out the hood wut the fuck you still going there for. Niggas think if they keep going to the hood that it keeps them real, hell no, that breeds envy, don't nobody wanna see a nigga in the projects coming thru on some hot shit. Fuck going back to the hood make opportunities for other niggas to get out of the hood, donates some money to your old hood but stay out of them shits. Niggas in LA for all-star weekend acting a ass, thats what broke niggas do, how you a millionaire or a nigga makin 6 figures and you trying to be gangster, ya'll clowns. Buck and the Game bout to fight both niggas done took a bullet before you'd think they learned from it, nope, not these two jack asses, they both got bank but gettin thye hands dirty over some rap shit, I mean if you gotta handle it, then fuck it go for wut you know meet up on common ground where aint nobody gone catch a case and just box that shit out, niggas done wanna box no more to much ego. Its crazy man, I'm almost like fuck hiphop, if it wasn't for being able to cope some old shit i would be running with the white folks trying to band the shit I'll be glad when this new breed of rappers die out and someone strikes a cord to bring back this lost art called HIP-HOP...Shoutouts to my hiphop: Hov, Nas, Big, Scarface, Pac, Pun, Wu-Tang, Redman, Snoop, Ice Cube, Onyx, Outkast, Goodie Mob, UGK, 8Ball&MJG and PE
one word "corupt"......hiphop is corupted, money is the root of all evil ......... as long as there's money to be made the will never be peace
y'all prolly think Bush is still looking for osoma in Iraq or he's just fighting bad guys there.
better wake up do what ever you gotta do to get money every race is doing what ever it takes to get cash look at that anna nicole smith she died an idol to white people but look at how she got her millions
but you'll have to face the concequence's for what ever you do
buy all means get that cash.......but who say's rich people die happy?
an example of conscious hip hop you'll probably never hear on the radio.....outta h-town.
