Do You Know The Real Art of Hip-Hop?!?

What’s good people?

Yo, I found a very interesting article in the newspaper today on the art of Hip-Hop. This kat Jeff Chang, who wrote the 2005 American Book Award-winning “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop â€" A History of the Hip-Hop Generation”, has penned a new book titled "Total Chaos: The Art and Aesthetics of Hip-Hop”.

In this new book he argues that hip-hop isn’t defined merely by the mainstream sounds of Jay-Z or T.I., or even the music of genre forefathers Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. Through his insightful and entertaining anthology of essays, round table discussions and interviews by an all-encompassing roster of artists, the veteran culture critic examines how the hip-hop ethos resonates in other arts as well.

“Hip-hop arts are thought of only as rap music, but our generation has taken it into the visual arts, photography, graphic design, literature, poetry, dance and theater,” the 39-year-old Chang says from his home in Berkeley, Calif. “It’s gone well beyond rap music. Critics don’t recognize it, but the artists feel they are working in a hip-hop tradition.”

Chang goes so far as to consider hip-hop “one of the most important global arts movements in the last two or three decades.” His book presents a worldwide collection of material dug deep from a diverse, creative hip-hop well: Long-time hip-hop documentarian Bill Adler offers a comprehensive examination of photography, Rock Steady Crew member PopMaster Fabel breaks down break dancing and other forms of hip-hop dance, and artists Cey Adams and Brett Cook-Dizney illuminate visual components of the movement that extend beyond bombing trains with graffiti. Along with verses from spoken word performers and a provocative dialogue about feminism and rap, “Total Chaos” speaks to both academics and fans of the vastly beloved but equally maligned art form.

For my real hip-hop heads who don’t just listen to hip-hop, but breathe it. You should check out this kats work. North, South, East, or Westâ€"hip-hop is a movement, a culture, which resonates in most of us. Check this kats new book out. You can get it at most bookstores.

Talk to y’all lata (I got quite a few posts today so keep checking back through out the day).

Thats that shit I be talkin about right there. Them niggas in Cobb and Douglas try and claim that west, but its not workin. Were not buying it over here. Somebody tell them suburban niggas 1) they dont live in atlanta 2) its only one westside, and if you live west of Fulton Industrial then your not from it.

schooling? isnt that the obvious, yeha Hip-Hop has always been more than just rapping. and from the time you wake up to the time you sleep, everything around you is hip-hop influenced/incorperated.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good post, great thread. I'm 36 yrs old and I came into hip hop back in 79 when niggas used to pop lock on the playground next door to my crib on the west side of Chicago. It was Kurtis Blow, Sugarhill Gang and a few others. I remember the Breakin' movies when Ice T was rapping. Beat Street introduced me to New York hip hop and I remember the graffiti element as well as the scratching which was performed by Grandmaster Flash for all that don't know. UTFO dropped Roxanne and I remember niggas used to have break battles in the basement of my school. It was a fun innocent time. I also remember how Eric B and Rakim changed music here in Chicago from house music only at parties. Soon, niggas were playing them in their radios all up and down the block. I also remember being introduced to KRS's Criminal Minded. I fell in love with My Philosophy off of his sophomore debut album and for me it is still the best hip hop track ever made. Yo debuted and NY opened up for me. I had already copped Yo Bum Rush the Show from Pe and I wasn't really impressed. But, when I copped It Takes a Nation of Millions, my life changed. I began to think black pride along with millions of others that copped the X hat. I then graduated to reality rap, not this fake, I sold drugs shit that is playing today. NWA made me hate the police. It was my worst period as far as troublemaking went. I went back to dancing when Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock dropped and I even went to Tijuana to see them in concert. Niggas had back up dancers and everyone had the Kane slope cut. That's Big Daddy you know as in your father and if you heard something dope, believe that he's the author. I also remember the East going towards more peaceful rap but I was in my NWA/Ice Cube stage. The west was ruling, I was still dancing, smoking blunts with Dre and Snoop and drinking gin and juice. But, NY woke me up again to that Rakim/EPMD/Tribe type vibe with the Nas and Wu debut. I began to remember that spirituality and intelligence that I lost during my fuck the police days. Raekwon's first album is one of my all time favorites. I'm not calling those pieces spiritual but they dealt with real street realities, not just the gangs in my hood reality. C.R.E.A.M. painted a vivid picture of a young man gone wrong but hanging on. NY hip hop forced me to remember that I was a grown man. That 5 percent philosophy was deep and I recycled my old KRS shit to re-center me back to personal education. I have a copy of Illmatic in plastic along with the 36 Chambers. Big and Pac started feuding which led to I Hit Em up, quite possibly the hardest dis track ever made. I'll stop there because a lot of kids on here know the rest.

Point is, hip hop changed black culture. I went from breakin' to militance to pride to clubbin' to grown manship all with hip hop as my father figure. It is a cultural phenomenon. I love it and I'm glad that God and Afrika Bambaata made it......

you fuckin idiot...I WROTE THIS FUCKIN ARTICLE AND YOU STOLE IT FROM ME AND POSTED IT...EXPECT TO HEAR FROM MY FUCKIN LAWYERS SOHH.com...fuckin moron can't write his own shit. fuck you

Great comment Easy F, I remember all of those days too. I really miss the time when our music wasn't fake and ran by people who can care less about the people or the music. I really wish the supporters of this mainstream bull crap weren't so blind, maybe they need what we had in the music to open there eyes.

Jacked from the NYC blog

"Killer Mike Pledge Allegiance To Tha Grind...Killer Mike ain't ya average rapper"

ok when this this drop and why THE fuck didnt i find this out on the atl thread?killer mike is my nigga.a double cd?further investigation will have to be done

^^^
you wont find it on the ATL thread cuz the blog writer at SOHH Atlanta is a pussy ass nigga who doesnt know shit about the music scene here outside of TI and Outkast. Matter of fact, I dont even think the nigga even lives in Atlanta

This is a good look. I didn't know about this book. Even if you did copy it from another site, it's all good cuz the whole point was to make us aware of the book. Most people wouldn't have known either, if they hadn't copy and pasted it into google to find where you got it from (Bayan).

Plagerism is plagerism regardless of how it is discovered.

I can still claim Northside Atlanta, though, right? I mean, I'm homeys with a bunch of white niggaz up here and we reall do put shit down on those streets. We are all gangsters and you will see that if you come up to mess with us. To all my white niggaz: Stand up for your shit, niggaz! Peace

The foreword by Kool Herc is very inspiring. I've read Can't Stop Won't Stop three full times already. it will school you young heads on the origin of our beloved cultutre.

You can still be involved in hip hop without being an EMCEE, DJ, video ho, .etc...

We need more hip hop scholars like Jeff Chang to keep this culture moving.

now i'm in trouble understanding why we need this blog in its present form, not only the blogger don't give the readers some news they wudn't come across otherwise, like some internal kinda shit, he steals from others to jusify his wage, it's almost not even a descussion blog whea we get some real news or topics to talk over

gyant wat is wrong wit ur links, they dont work. it only download for a lil bit then it says file complete. wtf bruh?

I dont claim Atlanta fuck boyy. That's what's wrong with you narrow minded ATL niggas. Dont know shit outside your own block or hood. Westside of GA, ole weak ass niggas. Come out to these woods out here and see if your ass dont get dropped off in the Klan neighborhood or in a pig farm somewhere. The coroner will neva find yo ass out here in the West GA woods boyyyyyyyyy! Weak ass city boys. Weaker than water. That's why we tapp that ass in football every year. You city boys soft, and cant aim either. These West GA country boys gonna hit you when we buss.

Another thing you narrow minded ATL niggas dont know is that all you "westside" niggas baby mommas is moving to douglasville. Nothing bu single moms buying up all the houses out here. Nigga douglasville is 10 minutes from Ben Hill boyyyyy. Right down campbellton rd past Harmony Place, the softball field and the car auction lot. If you real "westside" you know right what I'm talking bout. Nigga I rent houses to yo westside folks over by oomp camp's record store nigga.

One more thing. You niggas act like ATL is the only city with a westside. narrow minded. Come to westside Carrollton and see if you dont get dealt with you come up there stuntin.

LMAO @ BIG CRASH
Are you serious?????If its west GA your claimin then say it. But you didnt, cuz you knew nobody would respect that shit. You wouldnt last 2 minute in Allen Temple, they would see your car tags and its over.

@ Big Crash
You know why yall beat us in HS football??? Fuck nigga cuz niggas over here dont go to school. After 9th grade most niggas on the westside hit the block. Nigga you forget APS drop out rate is like 61%. And nigga I be in Carrollton sometimes, I got a white bitch out that way, I dont be seeing shit but dusty ass lookin folks not doin shit but lookin stupid. But why go out there on the regular???? AINT SHIT OUT THERE IN CARROLLTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And out there is a understatement, that shit is so far, you might as well take a trip to Alabama

@ Big Crash

Oh yeah I know ATL aint the only city with a westside. But we only city in GA with a westside thats known all over the USA. And douglasville aint no damn 10 minutes from Harmony Place, My dude used to stay in Chestnut Ridge down that way, and D-Ville is good 15 probably more from down there. Shit 10 minutes from Harmomy Place and you just gonna be passing Boat Rock Rd. Thats why niggas over here be juggin the hell outta yall on the work, cuz we know yall slow. My boi sell elbows to this lame from Douglas Co. for like $1300, he only payin $775 for them. And this niggas stay shoppin with my dude!!!! Who the hell still pays anything over a stack for an elbow of green??? Yall country ass niggas in West GA, thats who

zone 4 you dont even damn know. Once you cross the hooch on 166 you are in douglasville. Harmony place is right down the road from the bridge. If he paying that Well then that nigga lame as hell. Its lame ass niggas everywhere, unfortunately. I got niggas in bham with that afgooey going for the low. U can get a bow for 8 stacks. beat that.

Yall ATL niggas the ones that fucked the game up with that mid grade shit. WTF is mid? That shit is just good reg.

See niggas, I know the game. You dont roll with county names on plates. I know how niggas operate. Wildlife tags homie. I aint got time for no fuck shit. I dont know what you dont heard bout west ga niggas, but I know the game. I told you I rent houses to yo westside folk from greenbriar past rena ct all the way down campbellton.

i keep my pockets fat off you westside niggas rent money. anytime you smoke some exotic shit it done came thru west ga from bham. purple kush, afgoo, afgani, purple afgani, trainwreck, lemon kush all that shit nigga. fuck 7 dolla bows my boyys bows cost 8 stacks. Real recognize real wether you eastside west nouf or souf, real is real. I know the game son.

Big Crash what you want a merit badge or some shit??? Nigga you aint the only one fuckin with real estate, I dont know to many hustlas that dont fuck with it in this town. Nigga I been doin real estate with my pops since before I got out of college. I work fulltim, but thats my side gig. Its a reason why GA is # 1 in mortgage fruad cuz everybody from the nigga with the work to school niggas fuckin with the real estate. Nigga me and my pops rent the houses 2, just one differnce I dont have 2 move way out the boonies and be an absentee landlord. Im still in the hood, either Bankhead & Cedar Ave. or MLK & Brownlee. This fuck boi talkin about he rent houses. Bitch nigga this is Atlanta, everybody and they momma tryin to get money in the real estate game. Nigga you aint doin shit new. , If you a real hustler then you would be trying to fuck with commercial real estate on the westside. Gentrification on the west has left a void in that sector. They just designated MLK a TAD district, and Simpson and Bankhead are next. You probably dont even know what a TAD is. Let me stop anyway, Ive told your hoe ass to much already. You supposed to pay for this game

@ Big Crash

Whatever bruh. Yall West Ga niggas still weak. Nobody respects yall, Coastal GA gets props cuz SAV is not a joke. Central GA gets props cuz Macon, Milledgeville, and Perry are doin they thing 2. But yall niggas is str8 wack.
You talkin about weed like its still 1999. NIgga weed aint bumpin like that no more. Pills have taken over. Niggas still buyin green, but not nearly as much as they used to. Especially not them young niggas, all they do is pop pills. Nigga your late, weed aint bumpin like that anymore, even the dro. Cuz u dont know what the fuc you gettin. I know niggas sellin Canadian Ganze from Detroit down here callin it purp. All those exotic sounding names is just throwing yall stupid fucks off. You go right ahead and buy a elbow of dro for 8 large. If I was gonna get some work, I'd get about 500 pills, cuz thats whats sellin. Like Jay-Z said "back when crack was, what these pills are" Its an epidemic bruh, it just aint reached yall country asses yet.

And about them tags Big Crash, I dont have to get a Wildlife or a Education tag like you. You know why? Cuz I dont live in a wack unknown county. Nigga I got Fulton plates on my car, any state I drive to in the south, niggas know about that shit. You have wildlife tags cuz you cant ride thru over here to much with Carroll Co tags, you know it and I know it. Oh yeah in closing, I aint heard shit about yall West GA niggas. Like I said, Central GA got a rep, Coastal GA got a rep, everybody but yall lames got a rep.

Fulton tags dont mean shit. Yo ass could be from Roswell or A'retta or some shit like that. nigga, you just a classin one upper, a fuckin mr me too. You just a sideline nigga. You said it yaself. My boys do this my boys do that. WTF do you do? Spend time on blogs ebangin? Dont make me laugh. Like Pac said, "you read about my life in the papers, run-ins with authorities, felonious capers." You aint did shit yaself. Yo prolly aint even did no community service. white collar nigga. Sideling hood reporter. It dont matter where you from if you getting money. ATL is bigger that that stretch of MLK from 285 to Harlan Terrace. LMAO. Narrowminded ass nigga. Nigga all them white folk do out here is pop pills. You can make a killing of those kids at Taco Mac. Niggas dont pop pills like white folk do. When the last time you heard a nigga OD on some damn pills? That's them white folk falling over on OC's (oxycontin), Lor-Tabs, Vicodin, codones, xanax and shit like that. either that or meth.

Tax Allocation District, ass. They building up rundown areas by financing it based on being able to raise propery taxes in the area in the future. They using them dollars to build the beltline around atlanta. Nigga I know my shit. You got these other lames fooled but not me ole fuck nigga. Get the fuck out. always trying to talk down on what everybody else doing. just a hater. stay on ya fucking block. that's all you know. niggas like you make me laugh, ole fence riding niggas. pick a lane nigga or else you just get run over by traffic trying to straddle the center line. you are a walking hypocrite and breathing contradiction. You Fail.

@ Big Crash

What do I do? I work for COA (city of Atlnta) The reason Im on this blog so much is cuz SOHH is the only music related site that gets thru WebSense. I also do real estate in my free time ( who doesnt here). And believe it nigga Ive done my share of shit, I just dont do that anymore. Nigga tryin to be the Mayor of this bitch, real talk. And nigga you dont know me or what the fuc I've done. Just like I dont know you, but I know that you are from the sticks and yall niggas aint shit and wouldnt be shit if not for us, no way, no how. Yall whole swag is courtesy of us. If Atlanta never existed, the rest of GA would be a pimple on Florida's ass. Dont get mad cuz u from Carrollton. Dont get mad cuz I called you out on that westside shit, Ive met niggas from out your way trying to claim westside, and then when they called out on it they try and spin it just like you did, talkin about " I meant West Georgia". NEGRO PLEASE WHo the fuc claims the westside of a state?????

about " I meant West Georgia". NEGRO PLEASE WHo the fuc claims the westside of a state?????

^^^
I take that back, niggas from unkown ass areas like your do that. So you can ride another areas coattails, cuz no one outside of GA has ever heard of Carrollton. And the only reason Carrollton is known thru out GA is because of the Univ. of West Georgia. If not for the school Carrollton would just be one more redneck infested truck stop on I-20

LMAO_---- This nigga from Carrollton tryin to talk shit-----LMAO

nigga prolly bout 35 years old still talking down on niggas hoods like he in high school.Yep you got ya hoe card pulled. I didnt think you had nothing of substance to say. mayor? lmao nigga dont make me laugh. I knew I had you pegged right. sideline ass nigga. weak net trash talker. You shut up quick and resorted to talk down when you saw I know what Im talking bout. weak body ass nigga lmao! stay in yo hood bitch. We used to laugh at you dumb ass APS kids. I go where i please all over this bitch. fake ass nigga. like I said b4, u fail. Funny ass nigga. hahahahahahahahahaha!
