Big Oomp Agrees That DJ Drama, and DJ Cannon's Gangsta Grillz Mixtapes Were Illegal!!!!

Yo, I peeped this article written by Mossi Reeves about DJ Drama and DJ Cannon in this week’s Creative Loafing.

While I can’t post the entire article on this blog, because its way to long, I will post important points that were made.

• The Gangsta Grillz series was so hot that major labels often hired the Aphilliates to create mix-tape CDs for their artists. (Just before Gnarls Barkley dropped its Grammy-winning album St. Elsewhere, DJ Drama and Gnarls Barkley issued A Trip to St. Elsewhere.) The DJs' personal profiles grew, too. Drama and Cannon performed at the 2006 BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta. As rapper T.I.'s official DJ, Drama is depicted alongside the platinum-selling rapper on the March 2007 cover of XXL, America's most popular hip-hop magazine.

• Many observers, including Stix Malone, believe pending Fulton County racketeering charges will be dropped. "I think everything will work out for us," says Malone, music director at Hot 107.9 and a behind-the-scenes member of the Aphilliates camp. But they may still pay a price, as the Aphilliates will probably have to leave behind the mix-tape hustle that made them famous. "Everything's on pause right now for the mix-tape game," he says. "[The raid] definitely shook up a lot of people."

• Big Oomp, an OG in Atlanta's mix-tape circuit since the '90s, now has an imprint label with Koch Records. His imprint scored a major hit last year with DJ UNK's (another local mix-tape DJ) infectious dance anthem, "Walk It Out." "There's rules to the mix-tape game, just like there's rules to the streets. Same game, just different product," he says. "Everybody knows the mix-tape game is illegal. When you're doing illegal shit, you've got to stay as low-key as possible. That's just the bottom line."

Finally, someone’s confirming what I’ve been saying every since the shocking bust. When I came out my mouth for saying that Tyree and Donald were practicing in illegal activity, most of you called me a NYC import who needed to go back from where the fuck I came from.

But, now you got a good ole southern kat saying it as plain as day. Now what you got to say Decman, Zone 4, S.W.A.T.S., and Big Smoov?

You can do a google search for the entire article.

I got another download to share with y’all. Child molester himself, R.Kelly, has enlisted some southern comfort on his new remix with Ludacris, and T.I. Check it out!

first!! illegal or not, gangsta grillz gave a lot of people exposure they wouldn't have ever had, and we all know it. what mixtape down south is better than gansta grillz? no one is going to fill the slot, whether it was illegal or not. gangsta grillz are classics.

Gyant I respect your blogs but atlanta is really bubbling with this new hot unsigned artist name DAT BOY AIM his myspace page is crazy and he is featured in the new ozone magazine. Www.myspace.com/datboyaim

Yes gyant atl repper is right when you had that show case the rapper AIM did stand out and I hear he is frm detroit but lives in atlanta. His new song "This my year" is hot there are a lot of hot rapper in atlanta doing their thing I think that you should let unsigned rappers songs get posted so people can download them.

Fuck anything LUDACRIS until he explains why he performed for Paris "KKK" Hilton. Unless he didnt know, thats COONING To the highest degree.

This is from someone who gave OPRAH a hard time and was trying to be more "conscious" on release therapy.

For all you saying Paris isnt racist, there were videos of her slamming all minorities you can think of, saying "nigger" and "Im a black whore, I got fucked in the butt for coke"...type these quotes and "Paris" in google and see what Im talking about.

But money talks and all them videos were taken down within a week. So Luda got some explaining to do, especially if he expects us to support him against Oprah like I have been.

I think Big ommp was dry snitching if you ask me to respond to atl repper and tina. I remeber that showcase post and the rapper AIM did have a nice song with gucci maine. But I thought that gucci maine made the song better. After going to his myspace page that new song about it beaing you year is a banger.. I also like yola he is the future of the south dat boy aim is to

PARIS HILTON - IM A BLACK WHORE I GOT FUCKED IN THE BUTT FOR COKE

IM BLACK AND I STEAL SHIT

GOOGLE THESE QUOTES and then decide if you dont have a problem with LUDACRIS

CHAKA ZULU if that was really you replying on the last SOHH-ATLANTA blog post about "LUdacris PERFORMING FOR PARIS HILTON AT HER BIRTHDAY PARTY"

THEN GET YOUR BOY LUDA TO SAY SOMETHING ABOUT THIS WHOLE MESS. In a song, in his next interview, whatever. IF he doesnt THEN HE SHOULD BE PETITIONED AND BOYCOTTED!!!!!! call it cancer, call it hate, whatever, im sure he will keep making money, but he did indeed sell HIS SOUL if he doesnt comment. He'll lose some black fans, but Im sure that doesnt matter, because its all about that cheddar, and white people buy albums.

SO if yall are comfortable with all that then more power to yall...keep getting that money and being "all business"

My bad SOHH-Gyant for all the extra posts, but this shit right here is too wrong for me. I actually supported LUda against Oprah in many arguments.

@Gyant

@ S.W.A.T.S

I have no idea what you just said!

Gangsta Grillz helped a lot of artist and labels out, now they are running from it cause of the publicity. They werent saying shyt when there record sales were soaring, ask Lil Wayne, now he wanna open his fuggin mouth about it. Oomp shut the fuk up and mind your bizness with that bubblegum bullshyt Walk it Out. I hope Drama comes back and put his foot in all they asses, then everybody gonna be back on Drama dyck again....talkin about "Yeah I ride with DJ Drama". Yall a bunch of frauds.

@Gyant

You commented that Finally, someone’s confirming what I’ve been saying every since the shocking bust. When I came out my mouth for saying that Tyree and Donald were practicing in illegal activity, most of you called me a NYC import who needed to go back from where the fuck I came from.

I POSTED my actual response (from that time period)...(Yes, I DID SAY U DID NEED TO GO BACK)

I said nothing in regard to DRAMA'S BUSINESS.

"should of stayed in food and beverage/ too much flossing/ too much SAM ROTHSTIEN!"

that's exactly whut happened to dj dramma and cannon

damn sum real A shyt for once...its about damn time...no disrespect to luda cuz he one of the best with the lyrics but he get too goofy for me. let a real nig tell me the last luda album where u could ride the whole thing. anyways this "you a snitch" fad goin too far. the feds dont care if oomp say drama shyt illegal. yall make it like he called the folks and let them know or sum shyt. Drama(the ipod king)fcked up by bein too hollywood with his shyt instead of keepin in on tha low. same rules, different game. dont wish jail time for no one but the record companies feel like they been anal raped wit the bootlegging so nigs better lay low. Eastside/Decatur holla..

@Gyant

There are two comments from that Time Period at YOU and North Cak..that might be your confusion.

THAT SHYT IS LIKE 5 YEARS OLD NOW HOMIE....GET REAL!

Here we go again, GYANT hatin on Atlanta Artists. You took a break last week but decided to get back on it. How deep did you have to dig to find one dj to back up what you're saying?? DJ OOMP has been around for a while and is entitled to his opinion but what's fucked up about the Drama situation is that labels were telling them they could do what they were doing. I don't think any label has ever told Oomp that he can use their artists and beats, what he's doing is illegal, what drama and cannon were doing for the most part wasn't. Creative Loafing?? get real bro, do your own research, investigation instead of reporting from a free newspaper.
-OC Style-
p.s. tell "the powers that be" that you're googling your posts and looking up facts on wikipedia, and that you're hating on atl artists and see how they luv that.

Atlanta Artists Hated on by GYANT:
1. DJ Drama
2. DJ Cannon
3. Young Jeezy
4. Lil Bow Wow
5. Ludacris

(Feel free to add to the list!)

Atlanta artists LOVED by Gyant:
1. Str8 drop!??!! wtf
2. Sammie (not really from here)
3. Lloyd (in love)
4. DJ Oomp (haha)

-FCF

@FCF-Don't forget about TI, Bobby V and we a should list Jeezy twice because he really does not like him. Oh, concerts at the Tabernacle really ticks him off.

@ OC STYLE

LOL your real funny homie. First off I did do research, hence bringing you this information that you would have otherwise never heard about. The Creative Loafing is an Atlanta newspaper. What does it having to be free have to do with it? Secondly, why is that every time somebody shares his or her opinion on an artist who is from this great city that is not positive, we’re hating?

It’s like a lot of people in Atlanta are the Momma’s whose sons can’t do anything wrong, even when they do fucked up shit.

I found a DJ with his own imprint on Koch Records, who has is also immensely popular in Atlanta saying that what they did was illegal and some of y’all still calling me a hater.

It’s just laughable!

ok, still dosent change the fact that 98% of your blogs are bullshit.

Atlanta Artists Hated on by GYANT:
1. DJ Drama
2. DJ Cannon
3. Young Jeezy
4. Lil Bow Wow
5. Ludacris
6. Bobby V

@Gyant-I thought you said you were no longer responding to negative comments.(this is exactly what this post is all about) It seems like you are always trying to prove a point. You search really hard to find a southern to support your view and post it like we are all going to believe you anymore.

LOL your real funny homie. First off I did do research, hence bringing you this information that you would have otherwise never heard about

3 to 8 days late?...

Artists Loved By Gyant

1. All Atlanta artists

Artists who are not exempt from my opinion

1. All Atlanta artists

Yall are missin the point here. It wasnt the LABELS or even the GOVERNMENT that was going after Dj Drama. It was the RIAA. They werent getting their cut for registering for soundscans and all that crap and the mixtapes started popping up in Best Buy, Sam Goody, FYE, all that shit. Thats what caused this. Whitey not getting his cash, nothing more nothing less. Im just confused as to WHY this is ILLEGAL.
I mean I know what they got charged with, what noone seems to be able to definativley answer is WHY they were charged with it. ??

1 hunned.

Gyant, you're the one we're laughing at. Your opinion has no weight, you are biased against street based artists and you catch feelings too easily. Since you got on you've been complaining about people not talking to you, "hating" on you, showing up late to meet you. Damn bro, it seems like you're the Momma's baby that needs protection.

My point on the Drama situation is that we don't know exactly what happened. There's still a gray line as to whether what they were doing was legal or illegal. You jumped to conclusions on your previous posts about the situation and that's what angered a lot of us. Shit even the Creative Loafing article you are citing has a paragraph on how unsure everyone is about this. (see bellow).

Atlanta is known to protect it's artists, especially those we feel are real. You have taken aim at some of these artists and that's why you are taking the heat. But you're not from here, so you wouldn't know and I know you're not going to change. We're all just waiting for the day the "powers that be" decide to find someone else to do Sohh Atlanta.

"But the laws aren't always clear. Released last spring, Lil Wayne's Gangsta Grillz mix-tape CD, Dedication II, drew thunderous acclaim from music critics. To create it, Lil Wayne provided DJ Drama with a CD's worth of exclusive tracks. "Drama -- and all the Aphilliates, really -- do it totally different," says Stix Malone. "They work with the artists and labels to put out stuff that's not going to be on the radio, or on another artist's album."

-OC STYLE-

Great point OC Style. Also, if the Mixtape Game was that damaging why in the h&** do they host a Mixtape Awards event in NY. I understand it to be a big event and a lot of industry people come out for the event. I don't know all the details and have never attended.

@All Bloggers-You all are killing me with the "powers that be" line. That sh&* is so funny.

@Gyant-You have to know at the end of the day TRUE southern people hold each other down and we make moves not complaints. It seems like you are constantly doing the latter. We understand that we are not perfect but you sometimes you talk real reckless to be a transplant; which leads to the negative comments especially when the posts are not that great.

Scottie,

R Kelley is a child molester, look at Aaliyah and all the other cases he settled out of court with teenage girls he got preggers during the 90's, that nigga is sick and needs to be put to sleep permanately. Like Michael Jackson, do you trust R Kelley to be alone with your 13 year old daughter, hell no!!! Is fucking a 13 year old illegal and sick as hell, even if she got a phatty, hell yes. I can't understand why anybody would defend dude, like his music just as much as the next, but I can't get down with that child molesting shit.

As for Drama and the whole mixtape thing I think it's a sign of things to come. The labels is mad they ain't getting the money they are expecting to get back from the albums so they are cracking down on the easist targets, mixtape DJ's. Most mixtape DJ's don't have a powerful team behind them so they are easy targets, but by going after one with a powerful team like Drama shows that they are really serious about this shit.

Drama might have been doing something that was technically illegal, but when everybody was going platinum a few years ago nobody was saying shit. Now that records ain't selling like they used too, it's the mixtapes fault, that is the bullshit with this situation.

I see an attack on mixtapes as an attack on Hip Hop culture. Imo, mixtapes are the backbone of the culture because it gives the consumer exposure to artist who can't get big time deals and it gives established artist a way of getting new material out to the streets. I'm more concerned about the precendent this situation will set, I mean what's next.

To me it seems as if the people who drive the hip hop culture have zero control over it, that is a major problem because when those that do control the culture decide to turn into something we don't agree with we have no voice, like gentrefication in the hood.

Oomp soundin like a hater to me, like he a lil' jelly of Drama success. He say everyone know the mixtape game is illegal, but what guys like Clue and Flex who made legitimate careers from mixtapes?

Drama was made an example of because of who he's down with and how big he had gotten, he's a victim of his own success.

But, now you got a good ole southern kat saying it as plain as day. Now what you got to say Decman, Zone 4, S.W.A.T.S., and Big Smoov?

^^^^^
@ Gyant
Bruh I did call you import/ transplant or whatever you wanna call it. But it was not because of the DJ Drama situation, I actually dont remember having a whole lot to say regarding that matter. I could actually care less either way. Its just fucked up that a nigga cant get money without Mr. charlie getting jealous. Word to the wise, dont take Oomps word with a grain of salt. That nigga is just jealous. True he is an Atlanta vet in the music scene, but he'e been a joke for years. Even now with "DJ Unk" and his "hit record", on the westside we just know Unk lame ass as Coach Perkins's son from Douglass. His own father was the football coach at Doug and he still never got PT.

Sohh needs to get someone from Atlanta, at least from the South, to do this blog. How the hell can you get an NYer to do a Southern blog?????? FIRE THIS DUDE NOW! Go back to NYC.

WE NEED SOMEONE FROM THE SOUTH TO DO THIS SOUTHERN BLOG!!!!!

This is kinda random, but I saw this interview about different cultures inculding hiphop and this one guy said that "The difference now in hiphop is consumerism" that "now people do what they think they need to do to sell, or what the labels and A&R's tell them will sell" and "That the culture itself buys what is given to it" and "That back then we werent consuming, we were creating and thats the difference"

Kinda random, but thats some of the realest talk Ive heard about the situation in hiphop.

1 huned.

@ Gyant...

um, its DecKing, not DecMan...

and, errah...whatever I've said about you has nothing to do with you with Drama and Cannon. Shid, I've agreed that they was doing illegal shit from day one. And so have a good amount of other people. So, sorry, you have won no moral victory with me folk. You cut and pasted and another mans words from another mans story...good job!

Big Oomp = jealous man.
He need to walk that female trait out his system....

@Gyant

Since know response ( I take it that ) you did comprehend my response to what you've said?

I think there are alot of people who instead of supporting are gonna try to destroy Drama and Cannon and take their spot. It seems like everything was cool for 50 Cent, Dipset, DJ Clue, Kay Slay, Absolut, or whoever else and these guys have pretty high profiles. So that makes Oomps statement a little stupid because there are plenty of people with high profiles who put out "illegal" mixtapes. And still don't know how their illegal if they're making them with the artists and even somtimes using original beats. If you make music, you are the owner of the copyright, whether you are producing or writing rhymes. If people are gonna come down this hard on Drama, they should come down on the rappers and labels also. Otherwise, let these guys live!!!

i heard yola got that shit shut down. true?

#1 Artist hated on by sohhGYANT:

Matt Herbz.

I think what Big Oomp said was the obvious. Of course it's illegal to sell other peoples music for profit without breaking off everybody else off. But in HipHop its been understood that mixtapes are a big part of the game. Its not that Drama and Canon did anything more than any other mixtape DJ's, they just got too successful and made too much money. The crazy part of the Drama case is that lables paid these cats to make mixtapes for there artists. i think the buzz that dj's create for artists thru mixtapes should continue to be accepted.

@GYANT
its not that what you said about drama and cannon didn't have any truth but you didn't acknowledge the fact that they are often hired by labels and artist to create a street level buzz so its kinda f!ucked up that they would have these cats locked up for it.

I say support the DJ fo sho

Ey Swat nigga dont hate on me cus the boy Gyant called u out, haha!!! Nigga got embarassed on the net, wut a damn shame lmaooooooooooooo

@ North CAK

Stay out the mirror bruh,
read the (POST).

I agreed with you..then again

SOUND LIKE You caught feelins know
( Trans-gender ) HUH

You sound confused even when people agree with you.

I've already spoken.

You are Irrelvent/ I digress

Ay my brotha,

Mixtapes aren't illegal in the sense that the music is that the music stolen or infringed upon. The only way it'd be illegal is for those who don't taxes on that which is sold.

Just cause an article says somethin doesnt mean you got to believe it lol. Do some homework and see which idea is right in terms of the legality.

peace brotha

hope you can read that with all my grammatical errors lol

I AM A "TRANSPLANT" FROM DETROIT AND I GOT MAD FOR LOVE FOR THE ATL BECAUSE THE ATL REMINDS ME OF HOME. BUT ALL THE ARGUING IS BITCH SHIT. LIKE S.W.A.T.S. 73 SAYS, "BE GROWN MEN". AGREE TO DISAGREE AND MOVE ON. SWATTS 73, YOU SOUND LIKE AN INTELLIGENT DUDE, I WOULD HOPE YOUR DISAGREEMENT WITH THE ONE CAT BY SAYING MEETING YOU ON CAMPBELLTON WOULD MEAN LIKE COME THROUGH AND SEE HOW THIS SIDE LIVES AND POLITIC. THAT WOULD BE "GROWN MAN". I HAVE RAN THE STREETS WITH THE BEST OF THEM, BUT I ALSO TOOK TIME TO GET THAT 4YR DEGREE AND I AM TWO WEEKS AWAY FROM GRADUATING WITH A MASTERS DEGREE. WHAT YOU 'BROTHAS' GOT TO UNDERSTAND IS NOT EVERYBODY WILL BE A FAMOUS ENTERTAINER, SPORTS PLAYER OR LEGENDARY TRAP STAR, TAKE SOME CLASSES AND SEE HOW THE WHITE MAN REALLY THINKS, LEARN HIS SHIT AND THEN USE IT AGAINST HIM. HE DOES THAT TO US! GYANT, ENOUGH WITH THE PERSONAL JOURNALISM, STAY PROFESSIONAL AND OBJECTIVE, LET THE MASSES FIGURE THAT SHIT OUT. WE ALL KNOW THAT FUKN WITH YOUNG GIRLS IN THE HOOD IS A PREVALENT PROBLEM IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY, THAT SHIT STARTS FROM HOME PERIOD. MOTHERS AND FATHERS TAKE BACK YOUR RESPONSIBLITY AND STOP LETTING B.E.T RAISE YOUR KIDS. R. KELLY WILL GET AWAY WITH THE SHIT, BECAUSE BLACK PEOPLE WILL LET HIM OFF THE HOOK. THOSE WHO ARE HAVING A FIT ABOUT THE DRAMA/CANNON THING, THOSE NIGGAS IS GROWN MEN AND HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE HEARD HIP-HOP BEING REFERRED TO AS THE "GAME" LIKE ITS DOPE SELLING, IF THIS IS HOW YOU WANT TO LABEL IT THEN DEAL WITH THE CONSEQUENCES THAT GO WITH IT. MAN THE FUCK UP! AND STOP THE CRYING! I CAUGHT CASES AND BEAT THEM, BECAUSE I KEPT MY MOUTH SHUT AND MANNED UP! THEY HAVE TO DO THE SAME. AND LASTLY, OOMP DOES SOUND JEALOUS AND HE DID CO-SIGN THE RIAA'S ACTIONS. HE SHOULD FOLLOW HIS OWN ADVICE AND STAY SILENT, MAKING PUBLIC COMMENTS IS NOT KEEPING A LOW PROFILE, BECAUSE HE JUST LET EVERYBODY KNOW WHAT HE DOES, "HE JUST KEEPS A LOW PROFILE" LOL! ONE HUNDRED! P.S. IF THERE ARE ANY REPLIES, STAY GROWN MAN ABOUT IT.

@Swat
I caught feelins? How i catch feelins and I dont even know you homie? I had been done forgot u but apparently; im still on your mind, you've been holdin on to a nigga for a month. Sounds to me like your the homo, huh? Even if you were agreein with me, u still remember a nigga after a month???? *Shakes my head* lmaooo I'm irrelevent but u still talkin bout ya boy. Nice try on tryna sound smart boy, but in the end u made yourself seem dumb and stalkerish lmaoooo

Black men come on let's try to get past this shit. I am from the atl and i do belive that it was a lil bit of jealousy in oomp's voice but maybe he just felt a little slighted seeing how he is right in the "A" but drama has made much money and ain't even from the "A".But in my eyes that is no excuse that is our problem it was said best when Ceelo said on the Goodie Mob Cd Still Standing "Don't want to see another nigga have shit". Hey I love the "A" and all of our artist(well except luda he pissed me off with that bitch paris hilton)so all i want to see is our black men getting the credit that is deserved and what is due to them. And this coming from a Real Ass Black WOMAN!!!!

Oomp is the same nigga that you could walk into one of his record stores and buy any mix tape you wanted. Hell, DJ Jelly used to be making them in the back of the fucking store. So now this nigga wanna shine on Drama and Cannon? What part of the game is that?

DONE

illegal, ok, he said it, but what is exactly illegal in making mixtapes otha than prolly tax evasion? and they weren't charged with that, were they?

1st off mixtapes ARE Illegal!!! Its Copyright Infringement. No producer or artist of any of those songs were EVER paid a dime. Lil Wayne was a platinum artist before Gangsta Grillz. The labels condoned the cd's and paid for them as PROMO ITEMS ONLY! Not for a profit to be made off the music. Oomp is right when your doing illegal shit stay out of the media (Al Capone, John Gotti) all went down for being in the media doing illegal shit!

2nd Oomp is a millionaire so NEVER compare a couple of thousand dollars Drama made to this mans millions. Oomp is the REAL King of Atl, he has been through 2 decades of music in the A and is still here making noise. Respect your elders maybe if the aphilliates did this would have never have happened to them but maybe their arrogance caught up to them

1st I know the Oomp Camp personally, and whether you make mix cds out the back of a store or in your house, its all illegal. 2nd Drama an Cannon got fucked up cause what they were doin was stupid, you dont charge someone 15 stacks to host a mixtape and then turn around and sell them for your own profit. Oomp Camp got millions without the mixtapes so before anyone downs the Oomp Camp come to tha A and you'll see what the real business wit tha Oomp Camp is.

Mixtapes are the shit. Some artist woldn't have made it if it wasn't for mixtapes. Oomp Keep doin what ya do big homie. Don't yall sleep on Dem44boyz. Jas44records hottest new label in the A. First single Watch Me Flex.

them niggaz just mad cause dj punk ass can`t rap what they need to do is buy some real chains and sell some units complaining ass bitches fuck baby c dj punk and they ceo oomp pamp haha!!!!
