What’s da deal Family?

I see the comments are picking up and for that very reason, today, I’m going to pass on Atlanta’s Own Talent Showcase to address some of your comments. This picture was emailed to me earlier today. Can we all please get a grip people! They got arrested for a white-collar crime. There will be a trial, which I’m sure will take at least a year. Some of y'all acting like they was sentenced to death and shit. It’s corny as hell but: if you cant do the time, then don’t do the muthafuckin crime.

My homie Freezefiyah emailed me this information on just how serious the RIAA is about all the bootlegging. The have had enough.

If you thought DJ Drama and the Aphillates Music Group were the only ones to feel the effect of the powers that be's desperate attempt to put to bed the commercial viability of urban music entertainment, well guess again. Your favorite website, Urban Connects recently received a “cease and desist” notice (same day as the Aphillates raid mind you) from the legal department of VNU, parent company of Nielsen BroadCast Data Systems and Nielsen SoundScan. The issue at hand is the BDS and SoundScan numbers that are posted on this site. Because of this action we will, starting today, omit the BDS/SoundScan numbers from being posted in “chart format”…but best believe we will continue to be your source for analysis of this urban music landscape (on a business level) from the perspective of people that are of the culture.

When you see a billion dollar media entity threatening to enforce statutory damages (up to $150,000 per infringement) on a site that is completely non-revenue in nature it just goes to show how powerful a role INFLUENCE can play in the world we live in. Now is the time to strap the boots up and ride out! You can’t stop progression.

First, let me say that I really appreciate the time and energy (good or bad) y’all share with Sohh Atlanta. I’m doing my best to make this shit as interesting as possible. So, keep doing ya thing and I will for damn sure keep doing mine.

My first victim is PG. PG wrote:

Gyant, you are a fuckin idiot!!! I thought you would have learned your lesson last time when you started bashing Jeezy and the readers posted their comments about you and your corny ass blog. Now, you have the audacity to try and clown Drama and Cannon?!! I'm done!!! Nigga, I don't know where you're from but how the hell you ended up writing the ATL blog is beyond me. Drama, Cannon, and Sense are just as a part of the southern/ATL movement in music as Outkast, TI, or any other artist here in the city. For you to make light of Fed case is just ignorant.
r%20kelly.bmp
FYI, R Kelly is in town to shoot the video for Jeezy's "Go Getta." If you was a real journalist, you'd be up on your ATL shit.
I'll never read your blog again!!! I suggest everyone else follow suit. At least until SOHH gets someone better.

Yo PG, why you getting so mad dawg? Let me hip you onto something homie. It’s my job to report on a story from how I see it. If you want the hard “journalist” stories that’s what the main SOHH.com page is set up for. If you want my take on shit, you come to the blog.

Whether you agree with my opinion on DJ Drama or DJ Cannon is really none of my fucking business. What I will say is that I don’t work for Grand Hustle, Tyree, or Cannon. I don’t wish no ill will on none of them. I hope they come out on top and have me eating my words. But, until then I’m gonna speak my mind. Real talk, I emailed Drama’s publicist giving them a chance to set the record straight about this entire incident. I have yet to hear anything. So trust me I don’t just talk out of my ass!!!

As far as the R. Kelly thing is concerned, you didn’t put me onto nothing I didn’t already know. If you check out Monday’s post http://blogs.sohh.com/atlanta/2007/01/happy_birthday.html then you’ll see that you’re the late one homie. So at the end of the day one could say that you’re the “fuckin idiot” but I’m not one to play the name calling game so I’ll just say — Peace G! Oh and by the way, you know you’ll be back.

Thank shawtie, I do it for the love of writing. There are more than white chicks walking up and down Peachtree St. what you talking about? I like Atlanta radio actually. I have lived in Atlanta for two years and I like the love y’all show your stations. So that’s why I listen to the radio when I’m driving.

Big Herbz stated:

How the fuck u gon be reppin atlanta and make fun of the biggest DJ in Atlanta who's been providing the streets with hot music for years, the only LOSER is you. I thought you were going to do a piece on what happened, what insiders are saying happened, not a one sided diss on DJ Drama and Don Cannon. I mean, do you listen to Atlanta rap??? I know you said it was in a funny fashion, but the biggest dj in atlanta getting busted and you doing a satire/mocking of the situation is bullshit. Can we PLEASE get someone who actually cares about ATLANTA hip hop and not dwell on shitty stories like a club concert last week?

First off I aint going nowhere! “Hate it or love it, the underdog's on top, and I’ma shine homie until my heart stops”

The one thing about Atlanta I don’t get is the fact that we love our Atlanta artists so much that we blind ourselves to the truth. As unfortunate a situation as the arrest was for Drama and Cannon, it still happened. If you want biased news I suggest you go elsewhere. If you want the truth mixed in with some humor, then you come here! I love Atlanta rappers, and Atlanta hip-hop in general but nobody, and I repeat; NOBODY is exempt from Gyant’s perspective. And just how I dish it, is exactly how I can take it.

I’m just happy that y’all have stuck with your boy and made Sohh Atlanta the hot spot that it is. Everybody is reading this shit. And in this New Year it’s only going to get better.

Y’all have a great weekend and we’ll get up on Monday!

But, before I go. Make sure you come back at 1pm to see what I heard about Monica. Sohh Atlanta is so popular that I’m doing two blogs a day now.

Peace,

  • SOHH Gyant you right homie. Plain and simple everybody defending these clowns are IGNORANT. Not only are they committing a crime BUT THEY ARE ALSO TAKING MONEY AWAY FROM THE RAP ARTIST THEMSELVES.

    1) They are ILLEGALLY taking the music which is copyrighted (aka protected) and then selling it without permission. That right there is a crime.

    2) They are selling this stuff without paying taxes on it. Al Capone got arrested for tax evasion, why wouldn't these clowns? Oh because they're black? Stop being stupid.

    3) DJ's usually make a lot more money than the typical rap artist because they illegally steal the music and sell it without giving the label AND THE ARTIST a cut of the profit, WHICH YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO.

Why would you defend these lames when they are robbing your favorite artist? Aren't you the same people who post up here and other sites for people to BUY THE ARTIST ALBUM AND SUPPORT THEM? Well these dudes are taking food off the artist table and leaving them broke.

  • ...and we're still addressing Drama and Cannon here right? What mixtapes have they put out that used any artists music without permission? Artists line up to get in the studio with these two. The only problem I can see is that the artists fail to get clearance from their own record labels. Should the record labels have the artists arrested for complying with these alleged bootleggers? DJ's that compile a bunch of music and sell it are definitely dead wrong, but Drama and Cannon don't fit the description. Furthermore, who knows if they haven't been paying taxes? People are popping off a whole lot of bullshit without knowing any facts. Gyant, you still sound like an ass and Real Talk has joined you.

  • No one robs the artist more than the record label. Us bootlegging a cd from which they only get 1 or 2 dollars isn't anywhere nearly comparable to the money the labels get from the artist's hard work. Them niggas don't even own their master's. So I don't feel shit when I download. The real battle is with the labels, not with the fans.

  • Alot of comments let me know that alot of you don't know what the f*ck you are talking about and have never been involved with the "buisness" side of hip-hop. this is not what happens when you don't pay your taxes. RIAA isnt a tax collecting organization, the IRS is. If that was case, there would be no need to for the RIAA to get involved and they would have hit him with many counts of tax evasion (which is not the case) not the racketeering for selling cross-state. I know about this personally cause the RIAA did this exact same thing to my brother in 2001. This is what happens to you when you are making too much money on this mixtape shit. When you are a DJ, the record labels, execs, and even the artists themselves give you this "promo music" to get a buzz on the streets. They already know it is going to get played in the clubs, underground radio and end up on various "mixtapes". In fact, they call and harrass the DJs to do it. The free marketing leads to more spins on legit radio (which they make money off of) and in the past, higher album sales. What the RIAA seemingly has a problem with is DJs (namely black folks) making the type of money they are making off of this "promo music". In my brother's case, he got hit with practically the same charges. They attempted to seize everything (cars, promo trucks, houses, tv's you name it)and label it all under ill-gotten gains from the "illegal transactions". Even though alot of his assets came from prior and subsequent investments. This is why many well-known djs (i.e Flex, Whoo Kid, etc.) have moved from that side of the game over to being label execs, releasing mixtapes w/primarily one artist one labels' artists, or just releasing them as albums (ex: the professional 4). One thing is for sure, Drama has an expensive legal battle on his hands and it will be interesting to see how many of the artists and labels go to bat for him.

  • You really need to get your shit together homie. The title from your blog entry yesterday states that DJ Drama was selling bootleg CDs on the side. Do you not know the difference between a bootleg cd and a mixtape? Have you ever listened to a Gangsta Grillz cd? Your entire post made it seem as if Drama was selling bootlegs of retail cds, which is not the case by any stretch of the imagination.

How you claim to speak for or represent from an ATL perspective and not know this is baffling. Admittedly, the news reporters and the officers that commented called the items "bootlegs", but we would expect them to not know the difference (in the eyes of the RIAA and the law there is no difference, both are illegal). You, on the other hand, should know better.

To reiterate, DJ Drama wasn't selling bootleg copies of retail CDs, or simply making compilations of already released songs (as your blog incorrectly implies). Gangsta Grillz mixtapes are made in conjunction with the artists and with their full support and imprimatur (indeed, with the support of the record label in some cases). "Trap or Die" was created WITH Young Jeezy, "The Leak" was created WITH T.I., "Separate But Equal" was created WITH Little Brother, "Dedication 1 & 2" were created WITH Lil Wayne, and on and on it goes. These artists actually go into the studio with DJ Drama to create these "bootleg" CDs.

You stated, "Lets hope he doesn’t catch a beat down from some of his artists that he’s being stealing from. With the recording industry selling fewer and fewer records these days. Rappers can’t afford to have their shit stolen in such a vast capacity." If you knew anything about DJ Drama, Don Cannon, The Aphilliates, or mixtapes in general, you would know that this statement not only makes no sense, but is flat out wrong.

You go on to state, "the last person you’d expect to see on the other side of the counter is someone whose bread and butter is scratching records and mixing beats at parties, tours, and club events." This is also patently false. DJ Drama's bread and butter WAS mixtapes (specifically, the Gangsta Grillz series). If it wasn't for the mixtapes he sold (which you refer to as bootleg CDs) we wouldn't even be discussing this because no one would know who DJ Drama was.

Were you born ignorant or are you just playing ignorant? Dog, and I'm saying this with all due respect, if you want to be a writer and claim to represent a city, and speak for a culture, and offer your opinions to the many people who visit this blog (which laughably claims to be "the daily pulse of the Atlanta hip-hop scene"), you have to understand that you have certain responsibilities.

To wit, you need to know how to write, first and foremost (that means good spelling, grammar, punctuation, and the ability to effectively communicate an idea). You also need to have an intimate knowledge of what you're writing about (which, in this case, you woefully don't). You also need to have an engaging writing style and/or offer an intriguing perspective (which you don't).

In other words, it has to be something more than just your opinion. We all have opinions, we all get into debates and discussions about hip-hop music, news, and the artists. But your opinion is broadcast in a forum for (potentially) the entire planet to see. And this is the best you can come up with (poor grammar, bad spelling, and misinformation)?

If I were you I'd be embarrassed...But that's just my opinion.

you should also note that the reason VNU would send a cease and desist order to that website is because record labels and other music industry professionals pay top dollar for those Soundscan numbers. If they are broadcast over the web for the whole world to see for free, how would Nielsen make any money? They have a right to try to stop any activity that is harmful to their business...

It has nothing to do with the RIAA getting "serious", or bootlegging, or a conspiratorial attempt to "put to bed the commercial viability of urban music entertainment".

First off, you dont WTF I do or where Ive been. Im a str8 grady baby, but Ive been to damn near every major city in the US, and my passport recieves a new stamp every year. Vacation does not last forever, gotta come back home and get some more money. Its just I love my city and my hood. Lames like you cant relate, cuz your probably from a square ass hood. Nigga I wear my zone on my back like a badge of honor (literally) And every where I go I rep for my hood. And no rebel flag waiving white person owns shit over here, been a home owner since my sophmore year bitch. Furthermore, I cant remember seeing a rebel flag downtown since they changed the state flag like 6 years ago. Those folks you mentioned come to the hood and show love, even if they not from it. TI and Grand Hustle stay in my boy shop Westside Ink next to Club Crucial, right on Bankhead. Before Meech got knocked, Jeezy used to always be in the 4th Ward. Those areas are a world away from the "diversity mixer" at Lotus Longue that you and your husband where talking about earlier in the week. Im a New South Nigga, born and raised in the south and on his grind like none other. You might catch me at a networking event @ M Bar, or at the pool hall next to Bowen Homes gambling the night away. • Yo finally some real hard white niggaz from Atlanta are speaking up on this shit! My name is Matt Herbs (Mad Herbs, get it?) and I'm a white rapper from Marietta. I know I was not born in Grady or actually anywhere inside the perimeter, but I still represent Atlanta like it was my hometown. I mean, I can't really just tell people I'm from Marietta because they might not know where that is, but if I say I'm from Atlanta, they do know. Plus, I have me a little office job up in Buckhead, so you can say I still have my ear to the streets. I almost got in a fight with this homeless dude because he said I didn't "belong" in his city. I told him that he's a homeless fucker and that I'm from Georgia so I can represent anywhere I want. Anyway, great posting guys and for real, all my white niggaz need to stand up! We are in this bitch for 2007, motherfuckers!
