Isnâ€™t life ironic? Yesterday morning when I got out of bed I usually check the newspapers and online headlines to see if any local or national celebrity has acted up while I was asleep. Yesterday however, I didnâ€™t do that, and the one-day I omit my researching skills. It goes down with arguably one of the most popular and sought after DJâ€™s in the Southâ€" LRG spokesperson himself, DJ Drama.

DJ Drama (Tyrie Simmons), along with DJ Cannon (Donald Cannon) was hauled off to jail late Tuesday night on charges of music piracy. The Fulton county S.W.A.T. team, along with Clayton County officials, raided DJ Dramaâ€™s â€œGangsta Grillzâ€ recording studio in downtown Atlanta. Thatâ€™s right people, piracy. The current Grand Hustle Records affiliate had the streets buzzing in a frenzy over the shocking arrest. He along with DJ Cannon was both charged with the white-collar crime in the wee hours of the morning.

Though I realize this crime is very serious, particularly, within the recording industry. I find the entire situation extremely hilarious. Why would a prominent DJ with such a respected name in the game today risk it all for such a tangible underground market? Putting it plainlyâ€"he risked it all for a bunch of bullshit. Lets hope he doesnâ€™t catch a beat down from some of his artists that heâ€™s being stealing from. With the recording industry selling fewer and fewer records these days. Rappers canâ€™t afford to have their shit stolen in such a vast capacity.

Five Points, in downtown Atlanta, is known for its inexpensive clothing and even cheaper bootleg DVDâ€™s and CDâ€™s. And though everyone in this city knows where you can go to get todayâ€™s hottest mix tapes, the last person youâ€™d expect to see on the other side of the counter is someone whose bread and butter is scratching records and mixing beats at parties, tours, and club events.

Will this arrest affected his current relationship with TI and Grand Hustle? My source, which is directly connected to the King of the South says "HELL YES". "This entire incident shows some major dishonesty on his (Dramaâ€™s) part. I donâ€™t know any recording artist who would be willing to work with him again."

I had contacted Drama and his publicist last week for an interview. At first they happily agreed, and I do hope that they still consider the opportunity. Letâ€™s see if the â€œallegedâ€ bootleg DJ uses one of the most popular hip-hop media outlets to set the record straight. One thing's for sure; they don't call him "DRAMA" for nothing.

Drama ain't bootlegging shit these charges are fradulent. The artist that feature on the mixtapes wanna work with Drama cause he puts them on the Map or helps re-energize their career. And its b.s. to think that TI is going to stop dealing with Drama. Your close contact is obviously not that close..

shit is crazy im just like mixtapes arent supposed 2 be sold at all, i could see if that price was really for shipping, but i mean comon 7 dollars to ship a cd? u know them niggas was pocketing some of that cake. Unfortunately now, if the charges stick or do not stick it has caused the feds/hip hop police/the man...or whatever you wanna call 'em to stick their nose further into shit. i.e too much money is being made and they aren't in on it.

Just a thought to those out there speaking on this issue...
Now we know the mixtape game must evolve, and only those in the game can make that happen. We need to come up with a solution amongst ourselves( those MC's,DJ's,Producers,Indie label), or at least be part of the planning, instead of letting the majors create a solution that only benefits them. We cannot sit back and complain about what is fair or not, we must jump in on this issue at its infant stage and help come up with a solution or compromise.

man gyant, while i appreciate what u do day 2 day, i think u got this one wrong dog. this has "hater move" written all over it. while i don't know the whole story, i do know that no major label (or respectable indie label) in its right mind would dime out their djs. it is THE LABELS that send out promos for djs and encourage them to put their artists on mixtapes, especially djs of drama's caliber. though technically wrong in the eyes of the RIAA, its kinda like an unwritten agreement between djs and record labels, kinda like how cops don't pull over other cops for speeding. But with this situation, i figure someone/company/distributor he used 2 do business with go they hate on and called the folks on them.

do u really think drama has to seek out artists to "take" music from at this point in his career? he is no doubtedly flooded with mixtape requests every day, from artists and labels willing to put some music on one of his tapes. i'm sure they'll come out sitting pretty on the otherside, but until then, guess we gotta wait and see..

The thing is if and when this all gets in front of a judge the artists who do drops and host tapes could have some liability... their willing participation violates copyrights held by their labels' publishing houses... seriously it was only a matter of time before someone popped the technicality bubble

I guess the niggas that write these blogs really are haters or something... a.k.a. lame niggas!!! or really just don't know shit at all. DJ Drama and 'em aint bootlegging no damn cds. They were arrested for the cds they were making... "Gangsta Grillz, 28 grams"... What you fail to realize is that the RIAA has cracked down on piracy without strict guidelines on as to what is exactly piracy. The RIAA are meant to be targeting those guys with the pirated cds that you see on the street corners a.k.a. whole albums without artist or company permission. DJ Drama and 'em were getting their music direct from the artist and/or from the artist's record label. And you can see that they didn't know what they were after in the news report when they showed all of the mixtapes, but no whole albums of any artist. Get it right and keep it right!
