BET Awards Shut Out Female MCs

REMYMARTIN.jpg

My man Frank Ski of V103 made a very good point the other day on "The Frank Ski and Wanda Morning Show." He talked about how disappointed he was with the Hip Hop Awards 2006 — particularly its lack of inclusion of female MCs. It’s funny he mentioned it because that's also one of the first things I noticed. They didn't have one female rap category, nor did they have any female performers. NYC rapper Remy Martin echoed mine and Frank's thoughts while being interviewed in the media tent during the taping of the show. I got inside word from an executive producer of the show who said the ONLY reason why there were no visible female rap participants was because the BET Music Awards had categories that were specifically for the ladies. My response to that is — "that's bullshit!!"

Female MCs have been doing their thing for over twenty years. From Salt and Pepa to Lil Kim , females have earned their place in hip-hop and to deny them that right is a slap in the face to hip-hop as a culture. Let's just hope that next year BET comes around and realizes the error of their ways.

OK I am off my soapbox now.

Shout out to my man REGGIESHOTTA for taking on the responsibility of announcing who won what at Sunday's BET Awards. I wasn't slackin homie — setting up those pictures on slide.com can take a long ass time — But I appreciate all the love. For real!!

The complete list of BET Hip-Hop Awards winners:

  • To defend BET what female rapper made any real impact last year
Thats probably why Remy was pst cause it woulda been her due to lack of competition unless you want to put Lil Kim in there but see dropped in early 05
    that was last yrs awards.

and its a crying shame we got a corny award for best dance
    they should call it the
    Coon, shuck n Jive award!
    and no disrespect to Jay
but why are we finding excuses to give him an award
yeah he's president but up to this point Def Jams been strugglin what grounds other than popularity was he given this award.
and peoples champ award is this a joke
I miss when the source awards were respected cause while I agree with everything else on the list
T.I. was artist of the yr Cham for Rookie of the yr
    JD for producer etc etc
right now the awards seem more like popularity contest instead of awards based on content & quality
we need a award that everyone views as the Oscar of hip hop music

  • Is it BETs fault that no female hip hoppers are doin it big right now. No

Yo, no disrespect to my latino brotha and sisters...or to the latino Hip Hop in general...but I just want to say something.

I'm 1000% sure that there are more hip hoppers that believe in Jesus than there are hip hoppers that are heavily involved in latin hip hop.

Now..the only reason I say that is because I've been tryin to get at SOHH.COM to create a blog for Holy Hip Hop. Of course they would put the disclaimer that they do not endorse Christianity or whatever, but as it is now...alot of folks are sleeping on the fastest growing genre of Hip Hop out there. While current hip hop seems to be dying out, christian hip hop is growing at a rate comparable to early hip hop.

I'd just like to see it considered serious hip hop on a serious hip hop site, which SOHH claims to be. They gonna fall behind the power curve and be tryin to catch up after the fact. Because fact is, it's happening..christian hip hop is coming huge.

What do ya'll think about a blog dedicated to that?

And since this is a latin hip hop...click on my name link it and it will take you to a Latin Christian Hip Hop artist who will dance circles around Fat Joe. He's from the streets, and he's nice on the mic. I caught Allhiphop's attention with this cat. He's a homeboy of mine, and down with the same movement Kurtis Blow is a part of.

Check up on it, don't knock it until you've listened.

They need to toss up that "PZ Myspot" that I sent in about a week ago.

I don't want a shirt, I just want to see the responses that it generates. I guarantee it will be one that opens eyes. Holler at em...tell em to do the right thing and put it up. The responses my "MySpot" receives may give SOHH.COM and indication as to some improvements they can make on their site to put them a step ahead of Allhiphop.com. Want to post a blog to get some intelligent conversation goin on, then toss up that "PZ Myspot" and start a blog for the Christian Hip Hop.. Ya'll let em know! You gotta be wondering.

    PEACE!
    PZ

  • There was no females presence at the awards because there was no female who'd done shit this past year. Remy is the only one out, and she's hot garbage. So BET wan't wrong in the lack of female mc's in attendance. If they'd given a tribute to the legends then ok, but VH1 already gave MC Lyte an award. Hip Hop is a mans world, stop brown nosing these females. You don't work, you don't eat. You don't grind, you don't shine. PERIOD.

  • Maybe they can have a Female Rapper of the year award where they don't mention the nominees. There just isn't enough female emcee music out there right now to trying to come up with 4 or 5 nomninees and then pick a winner.

  • I'd have to agree with Banga! there are no real female MCs that made an impact last year. Well, at least the "commercial" ones. Besides, they all rap about the same thing; money, sex, etc. There's nothin' great about that. I'm sure if this award show was intended for true hip-hop, T.I. wouldn't have won so many awards and Common would've won more than one. This "hip-hop" award show is a joke.

that's what i said 2 days ago. I can't take BET (Black Embarrassment Television) seriously. The hiphop (and i use the term loosly in the sense that it only covered what was popular) is another way for them to get there ratings up with the lack of original programing.

Remy ma is the only Fem-C that did something worth noticing this year.could u see BET doin this:

    Best Female Rapper nominees are:

    Remy-Ma
    Shawna
    Khia
    Fergie
    Young B

I wouldn't ever look at another BET awards show again.

They could have at least had a female Icon award. What about Lauren Hill, Bahamadia, Queen Latifa, Salt-n-Pepa. Real Talk. Hip Hop is Dead. You can't possible tell me that Shoulda lean is Hip Hop. Yea Right! This was just a reason to throw some celebrities together and call it a show. I really can't believe that had NO female MC's! What a joke. Kudos BET!

How you expect anything really putting ladies on a pedistal from them this is the same station showing soft porn after hours on "Uncut"... I'm not suprised or upset it's actually what I expected of them....I am suprised no one got stabbed, shot, cracked in the head with a bottle, or knocked the f out...on air....apparently someone told them that's the kind of shit 'we' are really into.....

BET as far as i'm concerned is a waste of an opportunity to educate black people among other people through a common medium of communication. Opportunity to inform about history, news and music etc. Waste.

I can almost agree on Queen Latifah
however to me she hasn't had that defining moment in her career to get her that award yet although I think its only a matter of time.
Musically she's a pioneer, she has classic songs but she doesn't have a classic album. I like and respect her
I hit it in a heart beat but she not quite there yet and we have to admit they'd be forcing it. Hall of fame yes but lifetime achievement she needs a oscar worthy performance which she's capable of to get that.
    but everyone else nah
    sorry
Lauren crazy azz is talented but she hasn't done enough to warrant a lifetime achievement award.
Bahamadia come on talented but unknown if she gets one the Boot Camp Click should get one too. And Salt N Pepa
While they're pioneers I feel like if you can't stand Lil Kim, Foxy and Trina
and the half naked chicks on TV now.
Then how can u be all for Salt N Pepa who was their inspiration. Again I like SNP I'd bone the sht out each one of em cause they still look good. But I just feel its hypocritical for those people who feel like Lil Kim, Trina and Foxy plus others are a bad influence on young women to turn around and say SNP wit songs like Push it, shoop and Pepa uncrossing her legs in bath tub(which I have no problem with)should get a lifetime achievement award.

  • I couldn't agree more, back in the dayz BET was atleast interesting and informative with their programming. Now it's just a big mess, no originality, it seems as if they are fishing real hard to find shows and the ones they do create get cancelled shortly after. That lady whose in charge now, either is a puppet for those above her or she really doesn't know what the f*cks she's doing. The only time I get a glimpse of BET is when I'm flicking through the channels.
It's truely pathetic, we name a network after us and it's total garbage. Hell, all BET is now is a f*cking wack ass music video channel. I dunno whats wrong with the world. I can't see for the life of me why nobody is tackling the real issues BET is going through, they need help asap...

  • How in the Hell are you gonna honor any thing lil kim does? Besides her not snichting she is still a hoe and will always be. First of all her sit aint even that hot. Plus she hasn't had anything worth buying since a special someone stop writing her lyrics. And females MC's have fell off. No one is speaking to young ladies about shit besides how to make niggas buy you shit and shake you ass. They are weak and just want dollars. So they will not only sell their selves to the record labels but to the niggas that put them out. I.E. (Trina, Khia, Lil Kim. etc.) They are all bubble gum and shouldn't even be given a award until someone besides Eve, Missy or whenever she feels like putting out another album, Ms. Hill.Like everyone is saying Hip Hop is suppose to make you feel good, talk about social awareness, and inspire a next generation. Many niggas aren't doing it besides the old cats and a few new ones, and we all know these recent Female MC are far from it.
They need to get it together otherwise they'll be forever label and forgetton as hoes.

  • It's a shame that female rappers don't get their props. I admit that there aren't that many females on a lyrical level of Nas, BIG, or Talib, etc. - maybe except for L. Boogie, Bahamadia, and Jean Grae. But on the real, Remy, and Shawna are smashing about 90% of the crap that's on the radio today...

  • Think about it! As of today, the best example of lyricism we have ON THE RADIO is Lil' Wang. Sad, but true. Other than that, all we have left is Jenny Jones, Bow Wow, The Lame, French Fry Boys, Yung Coc, Lil' Boobies, Wimp C, Stan'Ron, DJ Punk (Talk It Out), Jizz (Chain hang low), and some crap about a Peanut Butter and Jelly car. Shawnna could smash ALL those fools at once! I'm saying that, and I'm not even a big fan!

  • @ The Playa

I agree with you on the fact that most of the shit on the raido is bullshit and it isn't worth 2 minutes of anyone time. But name the single that Shawna has out right now besides the played out "Gettin Some" or name a single that Remy has out besides a few bars on lean back. Their shit isn't impressive, and until they prove otherwise, they will always be consider lame. Also besides past MC's such as MC Lyte, Queen, Da Brat, Left Eye, and a few others, the hip hop game just haven't had that female MC that can draw commerical success but still keep their music legit and meaningful. Last all around draft pick is Lauryn Hill. hands down.

  • No female MC can get by on a large scale without doing the whole stripper female boss gimmick which been a wrap. Broads are treated and mostly act like their only good to be video hoes or strippers cause of the music content anyway, and exactly WHO would fit into the catergory besides remy ma? aint shit out there to begin with! Todays consumer wants club music with simple lyrics and even easier hooks, female MCs NORMALLY keep up with the status of the men and what there doin lyrically, well at least back in the day they did and you now have certified vets like MC lyte, latifah etc. Nowadays what the hell is missy or remy gonna measure up to lyrically to stand the test of time? its aint even about skill its strictly sales..hell missys videos almost HAVE to have a circus of dancers and 40 beat changes to hold our attention, now we wont accept anything less than that in a missy video. fucked up way to do things. Look at the state of the female and how shes viewed today and you can answer your own question on why no female MCs were honored...and there probably wont be any next year or the year after. shit, a Female rapper will probably only get love if shes southern right about now anyway, nigga back anybody as long as their southern for whatever reason...

  • I'm a female MC & my name is Devlaree! I'm upset at the overall current state of Hip-hop in general! But the truth is, the industry doesn't want to sign a Female MC with a head on her shoulders, they want either a sex kitten clone or a gangsta B*tch/chicken head! Because the industry thinks that's the only image that will sell! They don't know how to market any image other than that! Let alone think she will generate sales!
I'm reppin from a female MC's perspective! I have lyrical ability, a flow and an image but i'm not signed & I'm not the only one!I know i'm not the only currently "underground" female rapper out there that has something to say and/or prove! But, until either the fans, industry or over all image of women in hip-hop changes myself and many other talented/beautiful sisters voices will never be heard! Much respect to all Female MC's past, present and future!
