The All-Time One-Hit-Wonder List!

kris kross.gif
Yo, I recently read a German article on Hip Hop's Top 10 One-Hit-Wonders and yep you guessed it, there were some ATL cats on that list. Yeah, I 'll give them Tag Team and Kris Kross, although JD did manage to put out a couple of hits with these Mack Daddy's or is it Daddy Macks? I forget...

I put little value in this list, I don't know where the Germans are getting their info from but The Geto Boys, Big Pun, Biz Markie, and Digital Underground should never be on anybody's one hit wonder list. Never ever ever ever. Besides, how can you have a Greatest One-Hit-Wonder anyway? Get outta here?

Speaking of... Whatever happened to Cool Breeze?

Are Video Pro's Really Being Exploited?

tip.gif
I recently had a chance to read an article on two former Spelman students who were incensed after viewing rapper Nelly's 'Tip Drill' video in March 2004 and took a stand against what they saw as the exploitation of women, thereby starting a national conversation about hip-hop culture. A theme that is going hand in hand with some of the discussions this week at Spelman College's "Hip Hop Week".

I was interested in finding out the real definition of exploitation, a word being passed around frequently these days. Here's what I found:
Exploit-To make use of unfairly for one's own advantage.

Now, as I see it everybody in the "Tip Drill" video (and other "uncut" videos) is getting something out of it. Now, whatever that something may be varies by individual.

Stop saying these women are being exploited when they are gaining either celebrity access, media exposure, or whatever it is they seek to acquire. So as I see it, it's not exploitation when everybody benefits, Ask Nelly or better yet check the definition.

MC Lyte In Town For Hip Hop Week at Spelman College

lyte.jpg
What's good people? Another day another dollar...I guess we got the same dreams. But really, we've got some serious legends of the game in town this week at Spelman.

This week keep an eye out for arguably the greatest female MC of all-time MC Lyte, she's here for a five day event dubbed "Hip Hop Week". Also scheduled to attend some of the sessions during the week are Chuck D, Salt, Da Brat, and Yo-Yo. Yo-Yo, that's some serious old school right there for some of you don't knows.

All week Spelman will be hosting a five-day offering of guest lectures and panel discussions that address the impact of the hip-hop culture in the community. So, if you are really interested in talking some positive hip hop this week then you should try to attend some of these events. Don't worry, it's cool to take a break from the 50 and Jay beef for a minute, it'll be there when you get back.

Lil' Jon' and 50 Partner Up

lil jon.jpg
Yeeeeeeaaaaaaaah!! It's official, Lil' Jon announced that BME Recordings has reached a deal with 50 Cent’s G-Unit to cross-promote BME and G-Unit artists.

I initially heard a rumor that Lil Scrappy was leaving for G-Unit but apparently that's not true, he's still BME but will do work with G-Unit. Lil Jon did say that Scrappy will be the first artist realeased under the new partnership.

I couldn't figure out why Jon was on the Anger Management Tour in the first place, especially as the opening act but now it all makes sense. It's apparent that 50 is trying to monopolize the rap game and doing a damn good job of it. So who's next to sign their life over?

D4L Still Humble Despite Their Success

dfl.jpg
Atlanta's own D4L has seemingly seen life full-circle, after rising from the projects in Atlanta to achieving major national success in the music industry. Their first single "Laffy Taffy" has rapidly risen up the charts in dramatic fashion. Yet the quartet from the westside of Atlanta remain grounded and steady in their faith in God. We had a chance to catch up with group members Lil' Mob and Mook B recently to discuss the immense success of the single and how life in general has changed for D4L lately.

SOHH.COM:
When everybody went in to record "Laffy Taffy" did you anticipate the song taking off like it has?

D4L:
Well we work extra hard at we do and anytime you work hard at something good things happen. We knew it was a banger but we didn't know it was going to take off so quick. We just promoting candy baby that's it.

SOHH.COM:
With "Laffy Taffy" being your first major hit, how do you feel about being labeled as commercial rappers or "gimmick" rappers?

D4L:
It's all love you know because one thing about it is we're all strong believers in God so we don't let things like that affect us. We don't trip off things like that. We know where we come from so it don't even matter.

Georgia Congresswoman Proposes Government Open Tupac Murder Files

pac.jpg
I have to give major props to Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney for wanting the government files on Tupac to be opened. At a recent caucus meeting Ms. McKinney told a packed audience that she will be introducing legislation to open the government files on the life and death of Tupac Shakur. The hope is that both Pac as well as Big's murder cases will have new light shed on them.

W-ATL Radio...Hot Joints To Cop Immediately!

sl-1200.jpg
Just providing my weekly drop on everybody. I rotate these Technics daily so I'm just trying to keep everybody else abreast of what's really bangin in the streets and in the clubs these days. We'll just keep it ATL-related for the most part. Of course I'm bangin that Papoose, new Redman, and Biggie etc...but it's a A-Town thing so I'll keep it on those terms for this blog.

1. "I'm a G" -Bun B & T.I. - This is a serious joint right here, matter of fact the entire CD is a must cop right now, I'm predicting gold easily. T.I. spits a serious 16 on here but Bun B carries the song for the most part. Also check out Luda on "Trill".

Dallas Austin To Introduce Official ATL Theme Song Tonight

dallas austin.jpg
Producer Dallas Austin has written a city theme song, scheduled to debut at halftime of Monday night's football game between the Falcons and the Jets. I'm assuming and hoping that Dallas worked with some credible artists on this now that all of us ATL residents have to attach our names to this.

I don't know where the idea came from but I was cool with "Welcome to Atlanta" or "Players Ball" myself. I was even getting used to Field Mob and Luda's "Georgia On my Mind".

It sounds like political propoganda now that the mayor is suddenly interested in rap music? But hey, how many other cities out there have the courage to adopt a hip hop theme song, especially in these times when even the NBA has taken a stand against the hip hop movement by implementing a conservative dress code.

Young Jeezy's Not Too Big For The Baby Mama Drama

jeezy.jpg
So Young Jeezy's baby mama wants 20 grand a month for child support now. And what does she plan to use it on? Clothing, transportation and housing she says (You know, the bare necessities of life). But damn I didn't know it costed that much. Something tells me she's headed straight to the gucci shop, Lenox mall, the hairdresser etc...

Don't get me wrong, I do think he needs to pay more than the previously ordered $178 a month. The average father pays double that amount anyway. Yeah dude is a star but she's just on some way out shit asking for 20K a month (240K a year). I mean what's he going to do five years from now when he's not a multi-platinum artist? Yep you guessed it, probably incarcerated for non-payment.

So fellas, the moral of this story is this...If you don't do anything else in life, Keep ya baby mama happy if you have one because you never know when you might blow up. I'm guessing that he wasn't stepping up to the plate like he should've been for her to go for the juggler like this.

Field Mob, Forever Country And Proud Of It

field mob.jpg
Recently, I had a chance to catch up with Field Mob and discuss everything from their recent DTP signing to their highly anticipated third CD release Light Poles and Pine Trees. As expected, Smoke and Shawn Jay were their usual self, candid and pulling no punches. They concluded the interview by proclaiming themselves to be at the top of the game, and from the songs that I've heard off of Light Poles and Pine Trees they might not be too far off the mark with that declaration.

SOHH.COM:
So where did the name for your new CD Light Poles and Pine Trees come from?

FIELD MOB:
When you riding through on the highway that's all you see is Light Poles and Pine Trees in Georgia. You know how St. Louis got the Arch and D.C. has the Washington Monument and so forth, well in Albany all we have is Light Poles and Pine Trees. The album drops in early November, then we got the compilation "Ludacris Presents Disturbing The Peace" dropping on December 13th. Also, look out for our new label Field Mob Incorporated coming soon.

Jason Terry Launches Independent Record Label

JT.jpg

Former Atlanta Hawk Jason Terry is jumping into the rap game as head of atlanta-based indie label Reason Records.

I heard talk of JT starting a label a couple of years back but now it's official. He's already signed a couple of artists, playing a behind the scenes role, concentrating more on the business end of things.

Lil Wayne Officially Joins Boyz N Da Hood

weezy.jpg
If the rumors are true, I'm already a fan. Weezy is a monster lyrically (Yeah, we do have lyricists down here for all you non-believers). However, I think that the whole Boyz N Da Hood thing is played out, so let's move on.

T.I., despite ongoing rumors is not joining the group, having issued the following statement:
"Contrary to rumors circulating around the Internet, I have not and will not be joining Boyz N Da Hood. Although I am and have always been part of the movement, I am not a member of the group. This is just another case of 'Urban Legend'."

Blok Entertainment reportedly stated that the original roster of Boyz N Da Hood included T.I., Trick Daddy and Sean Paul of the YoungBloodz and the newer members replaced them. Damn that's a serious decline! From T.I. and Trick to Big Gee and Big Duke?

Jeezy reportedly left to concentrate on his solo project and initially only agreed to do one project with Blok.

The Ludacris and ETSU Saga Continues On...

Ludacris just can't get it right with these college performances I see. First there was a problem in Boston a couple years back, then East Tennessee State went back and forth with city officials on some political BS. What next?

I know the collegiate money is good when it comes to doing these shows, I've been on those SGA committees before, but is it really that serious for an artist of Cris' status. City officials expressed security concerns among other things as if Luda was NWA reincarnated or something.

trillville.jpg

I recently had a chance to politic with the Trillville and find out where they've been this last year and what they have on deck for us in the near future. During our interview, they candidly discuss their many business moves as well as dive into the so-called beef with Lil' Scrappy.

SOHH.COM:
What's on the agenda for Trillville right now?

TRILLVILLE:
We just dropped I'm Pimpin with E-40 and that's off the upcoming Reloaded album which should be dropping in November. The first single off the CD is called Nuthin Less produced by me, Don P. I produced two or three tracks on the CD and rest was of course produced by the Producer of the Year Lil Jon.

SOHH.COM:
Will the TVT Records situation affect Trillville at all?

TRILLVILLE:
Not at all, we signed to BME/Warner so we not affected at all.

Critics Give Bow Wow And Roll Bounce A Thumbs Down

rollbounce.jpg

"The jokes on What's Happening!! were funnier. The jokes on Fat Albert were funnier. Even the jokes on Dixie Cups were funnier." - New York Post

"...Roll Bounce has heart and good vibes but little else to recommend it." - NY Times

"Mildly entertaining and occasionally funny, but too often a roller skating movie that falls -- sometimes fairly hard." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Harsh reviews but I thought the movie was decent myself, I didn't go into it expecting an Oscar-type performance so it was straight to me. I think the critics come down hard on anything hip-hop related. They usually show us minimal love if any.

You can check out a clip here.

Usher Pulls Off Successful Benefit Concert Over The Weekend

usher.jpg

Usher pulled off a real nice benefit concert over the weekend for the Hurricane Katrina and Rita victims. But you already know, when it comes to Usher you expect nothing less, he's arguably the greatest performer of our era. I mean ya' boy brought out the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, what more can you say. Alicia Keys also came through and represented big with Usher.

On the hip hop tip, Jeezy, T.I., Youngbloods, JD and Franchise all showed up doin' it big on stage. Big up.

KIller Mike In Concert Tonight at 112

I'm On It...I'm On It..I'm On It! I officially declare this Killer Mike and Purple Ribbon Day in the A. Killer and the rest of the click will be on stage at Club 112 tonight.
300px-Killer_mike.jpg
As Killer Mike's release date approaches the buzz sorrounding him is increasing big time. He teased us with "My Chrome" the first single from Ghetto Extraordinary now the hope is that the wait is over. It's time to drop, we've waited long enough for the follow-up to his debut CD Monster.

Yo first off, say what you will about Young Jeezy as an artist, all I know is...Snowman knows how to throw a birthday bash. Visions was crazy last night, wall to wall pressure. DJ Infamous held it down real nice on the wheels too.

With that said, Club 112 was flooded with people hoping to become new on-air personalities at BET . I mean people spent the night on the concrete, some even migrated sirectly from Visions (lackluster hygiene and all).

Luda Now Aiming For #1 Spot On XM Radio

Ludacris2_.jpg

Ludacris has signed a deal to host a weekly show exclusive for XM radio, the nation's largest satellite radio service. The show will be called "Disturbing The Peace Presents Ludacris' Open Mic". The show will debut in January 2006 on XM’s uncut hip-hop channel RAW (XM channel 66).

Luda has the on-air experience having started his career as a DJ here in the "A" so I anticicipate the show will be fire. I've heard him on the radio and just as he does on a track, he has that uncanny ability to amp up anything he's on. If Luda can't get it hyped I don't know who can.

Manufacturer Puts The Freeze On Jeezy's Snowman T-Shirts

Just when you thought everything Young Jeezy touched would turn to gold, we find out that the original manufacturer of the Snowman T-Shirt clothing line actually had some morals and ceased production because of the suggested cocaine affiliation of the emblem.

snowman.jpg

Yaniv Zaken, owner of hip-hop fashion line Miskeen Originals, the original producer of the Snowman shirts was originally in the dark as to what the moniker meant but once the meaning surfaced, Zaken took a stance. After Zaken learned of the connection the snowman image had to hustling, he had to consider the implications for his business. So, recently he decided to simply halt production.
