Producer for Common & Jay-Z, No I.D. Advises Budding Beatmakers To Create A Life Plan

As a co-producer for Jermaine Dupri, No I.D. has worked on hit singles such as "My Boo" by Usher and Alicia Keys, "Let Me Hold You" by Bow Wow featuring Omarion, "Smile" by G-Unit, "Retrospect for Life" by Common Feat. Lauryn Hill, as well as the hip hop staple "I Used to Love H.E.R." and "Resurrection" which garnered Common his early fame. No I.D. also introduced Kanye West to hip hop production, inviting him to his sessions with Common when West was only beginning. No I.D. introduced Kanye to a long time friend named Kyambo "Hip Hop" Joshua, who was an A&R for Roc-a-fella Records who eventually signed West to his imprint Hip Hop since 1978 which launched West's career as an artist. Kanye cites No I.D. as his mentor in "Last Call" and "Big Brother".
In 1997, No I.D. released an album under his own name, Accept Your Own and Be Yourself (The Black Album). His second released was with Dug Infinite, a two-album package called The Sampler, vol. 1. He also released Invisible Beats, a beat tape. He's also responsible for producing "Success" and "Fallin'" from Jay-Z's album American Gangster.
Create a Life Plan That Makes Sense
You have to realize that life is not music- you have to have a life plan that makes sense for real life and not a fantasy music plan, thinking that music can make your whole life be what people think it is. I say that because a lot of times, most jobs that people do in real life nobody can wake up and just do. No one can wake up and say "I’m an engineer" – you have to go to school, get the training and then do it. But as far as music people wake up and think they can say “I’m a rapper” or “I’m a producer.” I think a lot of people don’t really study and don’t really know what they’re doing and end up failing in life because they created an illusion in their mind. Life will tell you that you can’t do that without educating yourself in what you do.
Greatest Moments In No I.D. History:
When I worked on the American Gangster Album, it was real funny how the one song "Success" came about. I took my laptop in and me and Jay and I talked a little smack back and forth and I ended up doing the record right on the spot. I kinda put myself on the line by just stuntin real hard like I knew it was going to be great. Everyone else was sending beats in from everywhere around the country and I kinda just boasted like I’m gonna do it right now, and this is going to be the one.

Yeah..I can hear his voice right now. He knows how to manifest his musical thoughts which is an art in itself. And most people don't know that he is very intellectual and questions and studies politics, government, history, religion,etc. which I believe gives him a wider range of influences.
