More Than Just Models, KING EIC Jermaine Hall Wants To Teach Readers

After four years as Executive Editor of KING Magazine, St. Lucia-born, Queens-bred journalist Jermaine Hall has taken the reins as Editor-in-Chief of the Men's magazine Hugh Hefner dubbed "the Black Playboy". In this week's 24 Hour Grind Jermaine weighs in with his favorite KING moments, what direction the magazine is going in and things every EIC should know to turn out an eyecatching publication.
Don’t Be Afraid to Teach Your Reader Something
Okay so I don’t want to teach them about the presidential candidates' health care plans, but I would love to teach them how to cook some food, especially the bachelors out there. I can’t cook a thing. I order all the time. I got crazy menus at my crib. Economically it would be a lot better to cook, I can show them 'Look at all the money you can save. Plus it’s really not that hard, I’m going to give you all these recipes to break it down so you’ll be able to do it yourself. On top of that I’m also going to put you onto these really dope dishes so if you go out with your girl, you can impress her.'
Then there's suits -- dudes aren’t always wearing them everyday, but we’ll help them out by saying -- 'If it’s your first interview you wear this, this is what you wear on your first day, this is what you wear as a middle manager.' It’s something we tell them in the 'KING voice' so it comes off like we’re talking to them
Jermaine Hall's KING Hall of Fame:My favorite cover was the Mya issue, that was when we saw a super jump in numbers. We went from one place to a totally different place after that cover. The shot was executed really well and even though Mya had done her thing in music she was perceived as a good girl, so it was the first time people saw Mya in that light. We get so many letters for Mya it’s crazy. To this day people write in asking for that issue.
