Most recently cast as the sexy sheriff sweeping a cast-off divorcee Jill Scott off her feet in Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married, DC native Lamman Rucker can be seen in Perry's current film Meet The Browns. SOHH, caught up with Rucker to get the scoop on the grind it takes to make it from a soap star to the big screen.
"Everything I’ve done has been a part of the whole process," Lamman Rucker says in regards to his lack of a singular "big break". "What people most recognize me from might be The Temptations, even more people look at when I did "As The World Turns." When it comes to soaps people are so passionate about it. Then there are people who don’t watch soaps, who pass me and could care less, but then you do a primetime show or sitcom and there is a whole 'nother slew of people to whom you’ve just arrived."
To Succeed You Must DO THE WORK
There are a couple of layers to that, one being literally just what it means -- this is my job, this is what I’m gifted to do, privileged enough to even have the opportunity to do, and even privileged enough to have the gift to do it as my job. When you have privilege your responsibility is always to do the work. You have a responsibility to do the work that is necessary to excel at what it is you’re doing, that’s in anything you do. I don’t care if you wash the dishes -- wash them well, rinse them well, dry them well, put them away and clean up afterwards. Do every single step throughout the whole process it’s not just the washing part, it’s every single step that it takes to finish the entire task from start to finish at the same level of quality and work ethic. A lot of people really lack the work ethic. Everybody nowadays, especially young people, want the short cut, nobody wants to do the work. Along with doing the work is respecting the process. You have to respect the process, it takes time. There are certain parts that you might be able to abbreviate a little bit, or get through in a shorter amount of time than someone else. Say there are five steps you might be able to get through three in a shorter time but you can’t jump from phase 1 to phase 4, you’re not going to be prepared for four if you didn’t get through two and three. You might even want to go back or pass up on the privilege that might give you a jump. In the long run that’s what will better equip you professionally. The character and maturity you’ll develop by doing it yourself over an extended period of time is what will give you the skillset that you need. That’s only possible if you do the work.
